I saw on Steam a Samurai Jack game that's coming out: "Battle For Time". I just can't. I was a big fan of the cartoon. But what the cartoon network did in the end was terrible. I know, I know, just a cartoon character, but it was criminal. Not going to spoil it for you if you haven't seen the end but they give him everything he wanted and then break him. If the video game is Jack hunting down the animators to undo his final episode then I'll buy. Posted by: banana Dream at August 21, 2020 08:11 PM (l6b3d) 63

Speaking of simple things, though, I finally got to test fire the AK I bought a while ago. It does exactly what it's supposed to, namely, go bang when you press the bang switch. It'll never be a tack driver at 200 yards, but I was hitting a 3 X 5 index card at 15 yards, and that's good enough for me.

Welp, the Governor of Oregon announced today that schools will not reopen until the current 300 cases a day of CCP virus in Oregon drop to 60 a day (some minor exceptions are made for isolated rural schools). The current level of three hundred cases a day means the average Oregonian has less than a one percent chance of getting the CCP virus over the next three months.
Three people a day are dying of CCP virus in Oregon - a hundred people die on a normal day in Oregon. At the rate cases are currently declining, Brown said it would take more than 200 days for all of Oregon to meet school reopening metrics. And to that end, the governor said the state has two paths to consider. Either Oregonians - specifically those who have downplayed the virus's effects and the severity of its spread - can more strictly adhere to social distancing guidelines and opt to wear masks, or Brown will hand down a new statewide order to shutter bars and restaurants. Translation: the schools will be shut for all of the next academic year. I wonder if this is going to be the thing that breaks the Democratic coalition in Oregon - when parents, particularly suburban parents, see that the schools are basically non-functional for another year (imagine a Zoom class of second graders). Yet, the schools are laying nobody off (the Governor's initial pandemic order explicitly ordered the schools not to lay anyone off), so there will be no reduction in the high taxes people pay for schools. Little kids are at no risk for the CCP virus, parents of little kids are at no risk for the CCP virus, and almost all teachers are at no risk for the CCP virus, given that teachers usually retire at age 55-60. Only the oldest teachers are at slight risk for the CCP virus. Basically, the teachers union saw a golden opportunity to get a year's paid vacation, doing little or no work, and they are grabbing it. Yeah, you will have Karens screaming about "safety", but the average parent, figuring out how to manage having the kids at home for another year, while giving them some semblance of an education, probably will have a different opinion. Trump really needs to keep pushing on reopening schools - I think that this is a golden political opportunity. Posted by: The ARC of History! at August 21, 2020 08:26 PM (I2/tG) 163

ARC, "political opportunity" in this case means "responsible and science-based policy" (as it often does).
Federal/state, shmederal/shmate, it's not about division of formal authority, it's about setting the factual framework. All these states and districts and teachers' unions vandalizing the country do so within a false framework. You don't obliterate that and replace it with reality, you rely on the residual common sense and character of Americans to act - even in their own self-interest, or that of their children. Um, good luck with that. There is less "risk" to kids and almost all teachers than there is from flu. For which zero steps or adjustments are made, ever. It's that stark. So one of my hubby's employees tested positive for the oriental virus today. We are now officially in limbo. He closed and locked his business doors and spent the rest of the day sterilizing while waiting for the nurse from the state COVID hotline to call him back.
When the nurse finally called she said, "We recommend that you and your employees go home for 14 days but none of you can get tested unless you have symptoms. You should probably have symptoms by 72 hours time, we think. No it won't do any good to get an antibody test because that is only good for 90 days anyway. And we aren't a lockdown state so you don't actually have to do anything if you don't want to. But a sign on the window might be nice then people can make up their own minds whether or not to go in. But really this is so new we don't actually know what to recommend. Use your best judgement. That seems to be working for people." So apparently, your eyes are not deceiving you. Just Lily - actually, while the gaps in understanding are real and significant, they're not unusual - and of most importance, they're not operational, at this point.
Advising customers of a positive case* in the business would be reasonable, I guess, but quarantines etc. make little sense. Maybe the one employee should stay away for a week. What we do know - the fatality rate, and demographic distribution thereof, are comparable to flu, but far more skewed to the elderly. Healthy people under 60 face de minimis "risk". What we already knew - "non-pharmaceutical interventions" (that's what all these lockdowns, masks, and other b.s. are termed) have limited to no effect on a prevalent infectious virus. * the PCR test, the most widely used (sinus invasion) can return "positive" results - traces of RNA - up to *THREE MONTHS* after infection Posted by: rhomboid at August 21, 2020 08:42 PM (OTzUX) 239

Interesting how history changes things or it all gets muddled. Also, the internet is not helpful at times.
I was listening to a podcast and the guy mentioned that Sulla (Roman dictator, great general, kind of an asshole) had had as the epitaph on his tomb: 'No greater friend, no worse enemy.' This surprised and impressed me as the origin for the phrase. So, I looked it up and some pages ascribe it to Mad Dog Mattis in relation to the United States. Looking up the wiki page, it says that Plutarch reported reading the epitaph on Sulla's tomb as 'No greater friend, No worse enemy.' However, wiki also states that the epitaph read: "No friend ever served me, and no enemy ever wronged me, whom I have not repaid in full" which, while no less bad ass, is still not quite as pithy in it's brevity. Thoughts after watching clips of Slow Joe's speech on TuCa's show:
Hope, unity, peace love and understanding, I'll work for every American, even people who didn't vote for me...Gosh, haven't I heard that before? Did that guy act that way? Nope. Once in office, in response to criticism of his desires, he said, "I won." What evidence is there that Biden will act as he talks? I beleive that if elected, the guy who belittles voters who ask questions he doesn't like, will not listen very much to policy criticism. I believe Joe's idea of a policy conversation will be, "I'm talking and you're listening, pal!" I'm unimpressed by Joe's claimed record of bipartisanship in the Senate, and being liked by Republican Senators. Because all the Republicans he worked with were hardcore members of the GOPe. If Joe is a top-notch leader and negotiator, why didn't he become Senate Democrat Leader? It wasn't due to lack of seniority. Posted by: Gref at August 21, 2020 09:03 PM (AMIL/) 352

I have a rule about sites with thousands of comments per article. Don't read them. It's all fighting and name-calling. Breitbart comments and The Hill comments are indistinguishable from each other. Comments on right-side sites. Most of the comments default to "most popular". That guarantees the most hair-on-fire comments stay at the top. Next time, change preference to either "oldest" or "newest" sort, and at least you can get an idea of commenters, instead of the dumpster fire it defaults to. If a poll has candidate A up by 4 with a margin of error of 4, it doesnt mean they are tied. It means there is a 95% precent chance that candidate A is actually ahead.
It means that there is a 95% chance that the candidate's actual lead is within four points. So there is a 95% chance that the actual lead is between nothing and 8. The whole point of margin of error is that it's the possibility of error--you can't average it out and say, yes, looks like the candidate is ahead. The 95% includes the likelihood that the candidates are tied. The other 5% is the possibility that the numbers are even further out, that candidate A is either behind, or blowing it out at more than 8. This assumes that they're using a 95% confidence interval, and not, say, 98% or 90%. Posted by: Stephen Price Blair at August 21, 2020 09:20 PM (2lndx) 443
From the NBA Thread:
92 The ratings decline for the NBA and MLB is even worse when you consider that people cannot watch from a sports bar this year. Home is the only place someone can watch the game and the people aren't watching there either. So the number of missing eyeballs from the telecasts is even more substantial. Yuge. Posted by: Schroedinger's Cat Wears the Emperor's New Clothes at August 21, 2020 04:07 PM So I have a question related to this: if all of the televisions in the sports bars are turned off, how much does that affect the ratings? A Bialetti pot looks like this: https://bit.ly/32j6P5Q It's three parts. You put water in the bottom part up to the pressure nipple. Not over it because that's how it can explode. You put coffee grounds in the middle part. You put it on the stove. When the water boils the steam comes up through the middle part and through a spout where it fills the top part with espresso. (Steam vs. water is the difference between espresso and coffee). It makes a very distinctive gurgling noise when it's done, so you have to be around and not let it burn. Serpico seduced a girl with one. Posted by: Bandersnatch at August 21, 2020 09:21 PM (q2K0j) 449

244 Interesting how history changes things or it all gets muddled.
Posted by: Aetius451AD Work Laptop at August 21, 2020 08:43 PM (cI3Q7) ===== I looked it up for you. The words conclude Plutarch's account of Sulla. The translation I find: "At any rate, his monument stands in the Campus Martius, and the inscription on it, they say, is one which he wrote for it himself, and the substance of it is, that no friend ever surpassed him in kindness, and no enemy in mischief." That is good. The Greek says, as precise as I can make it (thus awkward in English): "no one with respect to friends in doing well (benefiting) or of enemies in treating badly, wickedly / doing harm surpassed him. The way with the ancients is that when Plutarch says "they say," it means that he himself does not vouch for Sulla having written the lines, nor does he deny it. It doesn't matter. They're not taking a blind sample. Modern statistics is all about justifying how you shape your sample, to defend how you biased it. Because if the D to R ratio in Minnesota is 50 to 30, you shouldn't have to expressly find 50 Ds and 30 Rs. Just call 100 people - see what happens. Or a thousand. I'm watching the Astros at Padres on cable. The Astros announcers do not travel with the team, because of COVID for some reason; they call the game from a Houston studio, by watching the video feed.
Carlos Correa singled to left a few minutes ago. It was obvious to anyone watching the game on cable. Then, a few beats late, the Astros play by play guy says, "A hit by Correa to left!" Gee, really? I knew that a half-second ago! Watching sports in the COVID era sux so far. Had the van's oil and antifreeze changed today, and got rid of the tick in the rear wheel somewhere. The tick sounded like something was stuck in the tire, as the sound was consistent with the rolling of the tire, not the engine RPMs. Somehow, a part of the emergency brake was bent, and they bent it back, no extra charge. Works like new. But the important thing was that I walked a couple of blocks to the Mexican restaurant and had enchiladas picadillo, shredded beef. And a double top shelf margarita. And the shop was busy and falling behind, so instead of going to the waiting room, I ordered another double top shelf margarita. Now, 2 hours later, my drinking regiment is all messed up. Beer? still too full. Whisky? nah, don't want to mix with the tequila. Wine? are you nuts? HEY! Look! Two little cans of margarita mixer I forgot about in the back of the refrigerator! And a big bag of ice is in the freezer. Still have a half bottle of the Costco Silver that makes a fine drink. Problem solved! Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at August 21, 2020 09:37 PM (sy5kK) 537

I had a theory that betting big Vegas line swings would win - because the public was wrong. Not a bad theory. After keying in three years of a prominent site, filtering out the minor garbage - I learned that lines swing big when big players move in. But there was nothing I could make money with.
