Disgraced Sheriff Who Ignored Warnings About the Majorie Stoneham Shooter Loses Latest Attempt to Wheedle His Way Back Into His Old Job
One of Ron DeSantis' first acts of office was to suspend Scott Israel as sheriff and elevate Gregory Tony as the new sheriff of Palm Beach.
Israel had earned the boot:[W]hen asked whether his office might have done anything different to prevent the shooting, Israel responded glibly, saying, "Listen, if ifs and buts were candy and nuts, O.J. Simpson would still be in the record books." As it turns out, quite a lot could have been done differently. For one thing, a Broward County sheriff's deputy and sergeant were fired following the Parkland massacre after they were found to have "neglected their duties" when they refused to confront the gunman as he systematically murdered 17 people. The deputy was charged later with "child neglect, negligence, and perjury." The sergeant, who hid behind his car during the shooting, was reinstated in 2020 with back pay. Israel, for his part, said of the deputy, former resource officer Scot Peterson, "I gave him a gun. I gave him a badge. I gave him the training. If he didn’t have the heart to go in, that's not my responsibility." So the buck stops...anywhere else.Especially with the NRA.
This tick on the public's underbelly tried to whine his way back into a job, begging the state Senate to reinstate him, and the voters to put him back into office:
The Broward Sheriff's Office also ignored an estimated 18 phone calls that warned of the perpetrator’s intentions, including a caller who told the department in 2016 that the killer "planned to shoot up a school" and another caller who told the Sheriff’s Office two years later that the gunman was gathering weapons and "could be a school shooter in the making."
Israel however was not going quietly. The disgraced officer pledged, and delivered, on his promise of battling DeSantis’ decision both in the Florida legislature and in the courts. In those instances, it was decided that the Governor had acted within his powers by removing Israel. His final salvo in retaining his career was to run for the office from which he had been extracted.But he was narrowly defeated in the Democrat primary, so I assume he's finally being forced to work for the private sector. And who was the Democrat he defeated? Oh, just someone who shot and killed a teenager when he was also a teenager. But that's the sort of person who runs in a Democrat primary.

I have not seen what came of any "review" of this failure, but I might have missed it.
It's probably tucked away in the same location as the DOJ's civil rights investigation of the C'ville events (which would have probably entirely focused on the police chief, mayor, and governor for violating the rights - and as it turns out the safety - of the permitted protesters).

Because there aren't any other factors going on, that the researchers forgot to adjust for, like the difficulty of the cases.
I worked for a hospital that had the highest infant mortality rate of any hospital in the area. It was also the regional center for difficult pregnancies - other hospitals would refer their difficult cases to them, which might explain the high infant mortality rate.

As for the Moderna mRNA SARS-2 vaccine and also the DNA SARS-2 vaccine in trials, there is no way in hell I'd take either vaccine. Those vaccines will almost assuredly k1ll SOME small % of people when they go on to actually contract the virus and become infected. My baby has a bunch of doctors, and only one is black. All of them have treated her particularly complicated case with the utmost seriousness.
I won't say they've been perfect. But they've been damned good. And the (majority) white ones have never once showed that they were slacking behind the others because of the baby's race. One of them has been especially devoted. I think he takes this case personally, to be honest.

I worked with a guy from a former Sov bloc country who had a very odd profile. Imagine any typical guy from profile then take a large ice cream scoop and scoop out the space between his eyes, then redraw the nose to make it go straight from the depths of that scoop all the way to the tip of his nose.
From the front he looked like a relatively handsome guy, but from profile he was bizarre.

The almost-certain explanation for this, if it even is true, is that black births without complications take place in local hospitals, which are more like to be staffed by black doctors. But high-risk births, or babies with serious medical problems, are usually transferred to high-end specialist hospitals -- where most of the doctors are white. And although the specialists undoubtedly give superior care and do miraculous work, they inevitably will have a higher death rate of their patients, because they'e ONLY treating babies with serious life-threatening problems, whereas the local black doctors only have to deal with problem-lfee completely healthy babies.

He was an okay writer but an amazing idea guy. I wouldn't advise anyone ever study him on how to write, he broke almost every rule there is, especially the "don't use so many damned adjectives" one. But it worked because his topics were so shocking, unusual, memorable, and unique. Nothing at all like him at the time, not even close.

He's overly baroque and he has a very annoying habit of having passive protagonists who exist only to witness weird ass shit without doing anything about it.
But he's worth studying. He's very good at mood and at creating an atmosphere, not to mention creating a plausible alternate reality. The Shadow over Innsmouth and the Rats in the Walls have rather amazing twist endings.

I kayaked out there one beautiful morning, by myself. Got about 500 yards out. Stopped. Looked down. The clarity of the water was just stunning. As I looked down all I could think of was, my God, I am surrounded by all manner of sea life. Just teeming. Everything from sardines, to kelp, to those giant sunfish. Just amazing.

Monterey Bay has a program where they rehab sea otters and release them into the wild. They are repopulating norther ca! They typically release them into the Elkhorn Slough. Yes, there is an otter cam set up and you can see loads of mother otters with their babies floating around on their backs.
