The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

So back on August 6th, the attorney general for the state of NY, Letitia James, has announced that she's basically trying to put the NRA out of business. She has accused the NRA leaders of financial malfeasance and her solution is to dissolve the entire organization.

Note that she's not bringing criminal charges against the NRA leaders, she just wants the entire organization gone. No half measures here!

I think she's overplaying her hand. As I said, she's a progressive. Overplaying their hand is what progressives do.

This is obviously a political hit. In fact, it's clear that Letitia James has pretty much politicized the office of the NY State Attorney General, like all progressives do.

But how bad is her timing?

Coming as it does right after many American cities have been set on fire by rioting mobs which have resulted in record firearms sales, many by first-time buyers and even many by liberals. Imagine that: Progressives have figured out a way to get Americans to buy more guns. Because if there's one thing that this summer has taught Americans, it's the necessity of having the means to defend yourself against looting, rioting thugs.

But the message from the Democrats is

1. Your cities will burn
2. The police will be prevented from helping you.
3. And we're going to try to shut down the biggest organization that will support you.
4. Shut up, peasants

And you have to ask, WTF? The intent, ultimate goal, and timing of James' lawsuit is are all mind-bogglingly stupid. Why are the Democrats going out of their way to give reasons to not vote for them?

Look at their convention. There's *not one* Democrat who will emphatically and unequivocally condemn the rioting and looting of our cities. Because all the Democrats have to do to do well in the election is to not be batshit insane. That's it. But they just can't.

When he is 97 years old and long retired, President Trump is going to write a book explaining how he successfully managed to sneak in a number of deep-cover operatives into various levels of the Democrat Party whose sole mission is to come up with really stupid, self-destructive ideas and then trick the Democrats into implementing them. And I'd guess that nothing in this book would surprise me in the least.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com.

Prayer Requests:

7/18 - IrishMikeComedy thanks the Horde again for the prayers for his son, born in April. He’d like to request prayers now for complete healing for his son from a UTI that seems cleared up, but they are checking for renal scarring.

7/18 - IrishMikeComedy also asks for prayers for employment. He was laid off last Thursday. He is looking for remote work in customer service, with a specialty in insurance.
8/17 Update- The baby is doing well and has a clean bill of health, and IrishMikeComedy has gotten a new job!

7/25 - Pooky’s Girl reports that Pooky is looking for different employment. He dropped off his resume at a local place that would fit his skills better and had a good meeting with the owner, who he already knows. Asking for prayers that he either gets this job or a lead on a similar job.

8/6 - Jordan61 asks for prayers for Mom, who is in remission from multiple myeloma, and she is having a bone biopsy on Wednesday, 8/12, to make sure it isn’t returning. (She’s had some red flags in her routine bloodwork.) Prayers for a negative result and continuing remission.

For Healing:

7/15 - Fox2! requests prayers for his friend Vicki, who is suffering from a rare form of cartilage cancer. Her doctor is talking about taking her log off above the knee. Please pray for healing and for wisdom for the doctors.
8/3 Update: Vicki’s surgery is scheduled for next week.

7/17 - Dr_No requests prayers for his daughter Megan. She is scheduled for a 5.5 hour operation 7/21 to remove a Stage 2 cancer from her sigmoid colon, and will have a complete hysterectomy for preventative reasons.

7/21 Update: Megan’s surgery went well, and the best part is she didn’t need a colostomy!
7/27 Update: Megan’s pathology report showed that 4 of 20 lymph nodes showed cancer. Please pray for healing. Chemotherapy is planned to start in September, at this point.

8/5 - Prayers for Chaves the Hugo and his Family for healing and happiness.

8/12 - Prayers are requested for Jean, Ladyl’s very close friend, who is fighting mantle cell lymphoma.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com.

If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her.

Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after five weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Please remember the Prayer of St. Francis:

Keep calm and pray on!

Monday's Who Dis: I first saw Colombian hottie Sofía Vergara in the 2012 reboot of The Three Stooges and was immediately impressed by her huge and spectacular... comedic acting chops. She was *really* funny and that movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion. She has been married since 2015 to Joe Manganiello, who, according to imdb.com, skydives with the Army's parachute team "The Golden Knights". He also used to shovel sand and gravel off of a truck and do demolitions for a construction company. So he's not a soy boy. They were in the 2019 film Bottom of the 9th together.

But the message is to NYers, who are never going to elect a Republican again, no matter how bad it gets. That state is a rotten borough like CA these days. The Left is safe to play extremist games there, also just like the CA commies. It's not like you'll see swing state AGs pull an insane stunt like this.

So there is very little risk in this particular play, IMO.

Worst case scenario: Trump wins, and you lose the ensuing lawsuit after tying up the NRA in litigation and appeals for years, and maybe even forcing them to relocate.

Best case scenario: Kamala Harris wins, and you win the lawsuit and appeals quickly, and eliminate the NRA.

It's a win/win-a-little-less scenario, from where I'm watching.

68 That sounds ... apocryphal.

First delivery of Spitfires to Malta was fifteen aircraft flown off of HMS Eagle. All arrived safely. Did this incident happen later? No mention of it in this detailed article:

https://tinyurl.com/y57l4s78
Posted by: spindrift

Looks like I misremembered. It was Hurricanes, not Spits.

Operation WHITE - ARGUS was again required to replace the attrition of aircraft in Malta and, after loading twelve Hurricanes and two Skua guide aircraft, sailed from the Clyde 11.11 escorted by the cruiser DESPATCH and destroyers DUNCAN, FURY and WISHART. Met by Force H west of Gibraltar, battlecruiser RENOWN, carrier ARK ROYAL, cruiser SHEFFIELD and destroyers FAULKNOR, FIREDRAKE, FORESTER, FORTUNE and FOXHOUND, she proceeded to the launch point where two flights took off on 17.11.

Due to the reported presence of strong Italian forces, the launch point was further west than that of HURRY, and that plus other factors, led to eight Hurricanes ditching through lack of fuel while one of the Skua guide aircraft lost its way, strayed over Sicily and was shot down. Sunderland and Glenn Martin aircraft, also intended as guides, did not meet the force and proceeded independently to Malta.

304 Goodyear can find themselves in a real hot little boycott. Tires are very competitive nowadays. I buy the el cheapo supremos for my car and get about 45K before the wear indicators get even close. Goodyear likes pounding out tires that cost as much as a full set from some of the competition, sadly foreign made.

Posted by: bill in arkansas at August 19, 2020 11:46 AM (C1Lsn)

I haven't bought domestic tires since I don't know when. Foreign tires have almost always been on my whips - I remember getting Vredstein's on my VW back in the 70's. I've been getting Hankook and Sumitomo for the past 20 years or so. My new car has Goodrich on it, first times I've had BF products since the old '71 Firebird.

Since my car has different sized tires front/rear (yeah, I know) only a handful of makers do tire sets for it - Goodyear being one.

It makes it a lot easier to make my short list even shorter.

Now that I am essentially "retired", getting through the mud on a lease road to the drilling rig is less of a priority. Quiet ride on the highway is, along with durability. As long as the tires are all-season rated, so I don't have to change them out for Winter.

We run the ten-ply Hankook tires on the the trio of Ford Transit 350, 14 passenger vans in the fleet.

Had to finally change them out at about 98,000 miles for two of the vans, and "Unit 1" (which pulls a 12' enclosed cargo trailer), at 75,000 miles.

Replaced them with exactly the same brand and series. Why mess with success?

323 Just saying tire X is good or bad doesnt really mean much. Every tire company has 100 product lines. Some are good some are bad. I have Goodyear summer tires and Michelin winter tires. Bought the specific model not so much the brand. Michelin Ice tires are the best winter tires out there. Goodyear makes really good summer performance tires but shit winters. GY is cheaper than Pirelli but almost as good performance. But hey fuck em from now on Pirelli it is.

I've gotten familiar with how things work in that industry, and it's amazing how close to the bone restaurant operation can be - same goes for supermarkets. I did work for a celebrity chef's packaging, he'd just opened a yuge restaurant in SF. The place was packed every night, and he closed it in just under a year because they never got in the black. Just wow.

The difference between giving customers 1tbsp of butter compared to 3/4 adds up quickly and when you multiply that by a hundred with everything that can wind up on a plate it's staggering. That's why people make a living bean counting for restaurants to keep them in the black. I'd hate to be a restauranteur and scraping food into the garbage. I'm ok asking for more tortillas.

Just imagine when they put out 12 tortillas, and the customer eats 2 then asks for more because the ones you put out got cold. Certainly a business that's fun to imagine doing, but I'd never touch it.

396 I've gotten familiar with how things work in that industry, and it's amazing how close to the bone restaurant operation can be

Sure, its tough to keep your profit margin up, but you do so through pricing everything enough to make money on all your portions, not by gouging people on the little stuff. They deliberately underserve you on stuff like tortillas because they can make a mint on giving you enough for the job.

Anyone who is a chef worth a crap knows how much you need to complete a meal, and every one of them does this crap with something like fajitas because its a way of making up money on low-margin foods. Its the same reason they charge $3.50 for a cola that costs them 5 cents.

*extremely* good - second only to the Nokians, and superior to the
Yokohamas, on par with the Goodyears.

Ex-Mainer here completely on board with the Nokian and Hankook shoutouts -- very good all-season tires to begin with, excellent winter rubber.

You think so? It's funny how mercenary some of these enlightened rockers get when it comes to material they actually own. It's not like John Fogerty back in the day realizing that Pepsi or Cheetos would get the rights to his CCR songs before he would get them.

I don't know how well Steve Stills or any of those has-beens has managed his money, he has been out touring with Judy Collins the last few years.

See? He's not such a pure hippie that he won't take that sweet nostalgia tour payday. Charge old boomers and Xers who ought to know better $100+ a ticket to relive the days before they sold out, moved to the 'burbs, bought two Subarus, and sent both their kids to watermelon private universities. Also refills the personal coffers from the ravages of the 20th century.

416 My dad made kimchi once. Something went terribly wrong. My buddy opened it up around the time it was supposed to be "ready," and whatever was inside was like something from another planet. An indescribably awful planet.

Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at August 19, 2020 12:09 PM (xkm5f)

It's extremely easy to get the wrong type of critters infecting your kimchi or pickles or whatever.

Then it's rot and/or botulism time.

Our eldest has, for whatever reason gotten into salt curing pickled vegetables and fruits.

Even gone so so far as to pickle blueberries, which they claim are fabuloso.

But, they're always super careful to sterilize the jars and keep everything as clean as possible, then extremely careful about measuring the salt, etc.

Uses the results as a relish for meat and fish or a topper for rice.

418 When is too early for a beer? I moved furniture summers and holidays to pay my way through college. The only time I ever saw a moving man turn down a free beer was when we drove up to a senior sergeant's quarters on the beach at Fort Monroe at 8:30am. The sergeant came out with a beer in his hand and said "Good mornin' guys, want a beer?" and the driver said on behalf of all of us "Uh, maybe a little later". It was a hot day, with no trees between the truck and the house, so we were all drinking the guy's beer by 10:00. Does that answer the question?

Because they think they can rally enough votes from their base to win. It's all about enraging or encouraging their voters enough to overwhelm the regular voters.
Duh.
