Fire ranked number five among the causes of loss for BoatUS Marine Insurance between 2008 and 2012. Complete melting of the Greenland ice sheet could raise sea levels 23 feet (~7 metres) by the year 3000. If that happens, the ocean would swallow coastal cities across the globe.

One day in late May, Hiba Momtaz Al-Azhari showed up outside the Temple Terrace Police Department and told a receptionist she wanted to make a report about something that had happened a few days before. A surveillance camera captured video of an officer coming out to talk with her. They spoke briefly before Al-Azhari reached in a purse and pulled out a large chef’s knife. She swung it at the officer, then charged as he backed away. The officer several times told her to drop the knife. He and another nearby officer fired four gunshots. Al-Azhari was shot and later died at a hospital. The Hillsborough State Attorney’s Office recounted those details in a statement released Tuesday, which announced that the officers’ actions were ruled justified. “This went from a calm conversation to a life-threatening attack in just a split second,” Hillsborough State Attorney Andrew Warren said in the statement. “The officer said he even felt the knife slide across his vest. It reinforces everything we know about how dangerous law enforcement work can be, and we applaud the officer for trying to back away until he had no choice but to use deadly force to stop this attack.” Warren’s office concluded that Al-Azhari, 21, was distraught after FBI agents arrested her brother, Muhammed Al-Azhari, on terrorism charges a few days before the May 29 shooting. They believe she planned the attack for revenge.

It was so hard to see the great Lacey grow old. She retired after winning the 2006 Borzoi Club of America National Specialty. When Her Majesty took Diva to the next show, her astonishment that she was being left behind was written clearly on her face.
She came down here to Texas when we moved in 2009. One day she was out in the yard with us, screamed, and limped back to us. We took her into the vet, where cancer was diagnosed. They said we might have six months but in three weeks we knew it was time for the last act of love.
She died peacefully while Her Majesty, who held her, whispered to her through tears, "Happy, happy." We look at her magnificent grandchildren, who resemble her so closely, and know her spirit lives on.

Many stories to think about.
One that I won't forget, is the story about two different people he met, walking the beaches of Hawaii.
The first woman recognized him, and started a conversation. "Where are you from?", asked Dyer.
"Oh, from Ohio, we just moved here recently".
"And how do you like it?"
"Oh, it's great! The people are friendly, warm, and happy to share stories with me!"
"What was it like in Ohio?"
"It was also a great place! We are so lucky to meet such nice people!"
A bit later walking the same beach, Dyer came along another woman who recognized him. Same questions.
"Oh, from Oregon, we just moved here recently".
"And how do you like it?"
"Oh, we can't stand it! The people are surly, cold, and barely are willing to talk with us!
Just like those people back in Oregon!"
What a lesson of life. That has to be over 20 years ago, and I remember it like it was yesterday.

I was watching Fox, and Pissy Wallace (I think) was singing the praises of Bill Clinton, and MArtha McCallum was all positive about how cool it was that we got to see 30 second shots of delegate voting from pretty views of every state, instead of being in a convention hall.
It was fairly tedious, but I was only 1/1024th listening, which is nice.
Otherwise, I would either harm my television or myself.

I went through that with my first dog. The vet gave me the option to stay with him while the shots were administered. I'm glad I did. The first shot made him fall asleep. He was actually snoring when the second shot was administered. It made me feel better seeing how easy it was on him.

Probably not, but really why not give it a shot. Challenge them everywhere because it might force the dems to actually spend money in races that are nothing more than some extra cash for the dem candidates that they pocket after putting a few signs up. Zucchini, yellow squash, eggplant and the very first of the tomatoes.
Potatoes are read to be dug whenever I feel like it, and the peppers are just getting some heat. The Swiss chard is still producing.
I had my first green bean yesterday.
Apples are falling and the pears are just starting, but my melons are starting to lose some leaves and I am concerned I have that melon wilt going. No idea if I will get any Korean melons this year if it keeps up.
I have lots and lots of pumpkins for some reason too.
I am taking tomorrow through Friday off because I decided I had far too much vacation time to be this stressed. I am thinking of finding new work to do, or quitting out of disgust. I could cut firewood maybe.

Like I said its all a power struggle for who is in control of the Democrats. Their goals are basically all the same. I think you could argue that the main difference is that the Biden/Pelosi group in current control are happy to get money from big business and let them go to squeeze out competition and just be an autonomous piece of the government. The AOC want that business completely absorbed into the government.

I am very interested to hear what you learn and hope it will penetrate the reluctant and fearful skulls in our area. I started back to work this week, and so far my coworkers are all convinced the masks are keeping us safe while the students seem to know that the masks are just something they have to do to come to school.

It was amazing to watch the spread from Wuhan to around the globe, watching waxing and waning on a fast-forward time-scale.
Many of the public data sites you see depict snapshots and don't carry with it the trends, analysis and forecasts that make the information conveyed actionable.
These sites are used to scare people, not inform (not saying that is the intent, that is more-or-less the measurable result. At least that is the socio-cultural elements that I have been able to extract so far. More pending.
Interesting to note that this modeling is intended for policy making in the event of future outbreaks too.
I really have to get this right.
Tonight I'm exploring the space of going over camera feeds for as far back as I reasonably can, running it through CV to plot clustering of "distancing" and "mask wearing" as a proxy for compliance in public venues.

That is a large element in this project, modeling the behavior in terms of acceptance/compliance into one where researchers can manipulate inputs to see what shakes out.
I suspect a major reason why many politicians are extending mask and distancing measures is because they are feckless politicians, and people are treating the masks as a magic talisman urging their officials to "keep them safe". And so the politically safe thing to do is keep dragging this out.
They need an exit - an exit strategy that deals strongly with the human psychological element.
I have read countless papers covering a wide area of psychology and medical research just so I can find these data features that are relevant.

I bought some sausages at Target on Sunday. I was planning on eating them for lunch over the next week or two, hot-dog style (warmed up in a bun, with mustard and cheese).
But I opened up one of the packs yesterday morning, craving a little snack, and I noticed the "Use By" date. "Oh. That's... today."
I figured if I cooked up the rest of the sausages somehow, that'd turn back the clock a bit and give me some more time to eat them. I decided to cut them up and brown them, then simmer them in spaghetti sauce for a while. I'd then use that mixture as sandwich filler.
I got that started. I tossed in a large amount of parmesan cheese, because I had some that would be good for about another month but I didn't want to forget about it and end up letting that go to waste.
Then I realized I'd put in too much sauce. So, now I'd have to do something else with it. I ended up tossing in some rice. I added some more water, too, just because the rice absorbed the sauce a little quicker than I'd been expecting.
I figured I'd end up with some sort of Italian dirty rice, or maybe Italian jambalaya. Not Italian paella, because you end up cooking that stuff all frickin' day.
Oh, wait, though... there is a popular Italian rice dish! I think I'll call this stuff Risotto Pizzaiola, then. Or, "pizza rice".
It turned out well! I think I'll try making it again in the future, perhaps with some minor changes.

When I was little, my mother used to make a rice/sausage casserole. Minute Rice, plus a can of stewed tomatoes. Layer the top with tinned hot dogs, not the little Vienna sausages, but standard frank size. Bake in oven a half hour. It was pretty good.

What an enormous hole she left in our lives. But the sheer enjoyment of having had her is enough to counter the reminders of her that happen just going through the daily routines of life. Any of you who have lost a pet know exactly what I mean.

For the first time, the Portland rioters have turned their attention to the Multnomah County offices, on the opposite side of the river from downtown.
Things are peaceful thus far, but the building is unguarded, and isn't boarded up.
Lots and lots of nice windows to smash, which would provide access to the building.
The county commissioners are all big supporters of BLM, of course.
We'll see how that works out for them.

I have mentioned before that I have been listening to the History of Rome podcast (probably too much, but I can live with it.) One thing I was surprised to learn was that along with a fire dept, Augustus was the first to institute a police force for the city.
As I said, this surprises me. They must have had watchmen and agents of the courts, but this was a city of a million people in antiquity.
One clue to what 'kept the peace' was mentioned in the podcast on the Twelve Tables with this bit: 'A thief that is caught during the day must be turned in alive to the magistrates. A thief caught at night may be killed without question or charge.'

One nice thing about it, especially for me, after some very long and fairly heavy history books just prior, was that it is made up of short sections on the various people, following them from 1914 until the armistice. So you can pick it up and read 3 pages, or 33 pages, just as easily.
My favorite bit of military history trivia from it: close/short haircuts for the military were not for hygiene, but to make assessment and treatment of head wounds (such a huge issue in trench warfare/artillery-heavy action) easier.

Saw a program on Roku, based on a book, made in 2010 or so I believe, about WWI. (It's called WWI, or something similar.)
ANYWAY, the interesting thing about the start of the war was how Germany got into it.
1) Ottoman Empire was run by Austrians, pretty much, and had many ethnic groups that were restive.
2) Serbia was a problem, and had radicals. Separate story about the radicals, but Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated (he was the Crown Prince/heir). Shock and denunciation throughout Europe.
3) Ottoman Empire was determined to punish the Serbs. They went to Germany and asked for 'support', but not specifying what they were going to do. The Kaiser offhandedly said, 'Yeah, bro, whatever'.
4) Serbia had relations with Russia. Russia and France were allied.
5) Ottomans went to war against Serbia. Germans were surprised at this.
6) Russians (Czar Nicholas) started mobilizing their military. Of course, the czar was having his own issues...
7) Germans saw the Russians mobilizing. They were caught literally between France and Russia. Their thinking: we are going to get attacked by both Russian and France anyway, so let's take out weak sister France first. SO THEY ATTACKED FRANCE FIRST. Incredible nonsense ensues.
The Brits had no connection to any of this, EXCEPT that they had their Empire, and their sea trade and trade routes. This was their main interest. When the French were getting pounded and the Germans were nearing Paris, they decided that they need to insure the Germans didn't take over. Thus began their help.
This is what I remember from the series, which I saw a few weeks ago.

Tuchman is NOT light reading. Her research is impeccable and her writing is outstanding ... but she is not an 'easy' read.
Guns of August is WW 1 to the end ... a prologue to the war is 'Proud Tower' with all the anarchist movements and assassinations.
Other books by her that are highly recommended are 'First Salute' - about the U.S. Revolution; and 'A Distant Mirror' about 14th Century Europe.
Approach her books gleefully but with trepidation. These are great, absorbing, educational, and can be exhausting. They are for the serious readers who enjoy the challenge of great writing, complex subject matter, and an author who can deliver both.
Enjoy.

The real issue is Britain's response to Germany's rise and thus threat vis a vis empire and world markets. Simultaneously, the post Civil War U.S. posed a similar threat. Britain seems to have played one rival against the other?

The First Battle of the Marne in September 1914 brought mobile and maneuvering warfare to an end on the Western Front; thereafter it was trench warfare almost to the end of the war.

I reviewed this book about three weeks ago in the Sunday book thread. There was a ten-part series made from this book (roughly) that I thought was very good, which I first saw before I read the book. Several different posters have uploaded all ten episodes, each about an hour in running time, to YouTube. Search YT for "The First World War". One plus for me was its haunting introduction and closing music, a piece entitled "Cortege" from the suite "Behind the Lines", composed by Cecil Coles, who died in the trenches.
