The high-water mark of white supremacy in the last decade was 200 panty-sniffing basement dwellers in khaki pants waving tiki torches and chanting, chants that no one could hear because they were outnumbered at their own rally. Are there individual Kluckers or NAZIs around? Sure. A few. So what? They have less impact and influence than the Church of Scientology. The great lie of the 21st century is that there is any type of organized or influential white supremacy movement in America today. This lie is necessary for two reasons. #1 The left needs a hate-object to function, and when a legitimate one doesn't exist, they must create one and #2 they need something to excuse the existence of progressive fascist (Antifa) and black supremacist (BLM) groups so they can grin and do their “Gosh, there are extremists on both sides” shuck and jive when called to answer for the atrocities of the mob. Unfortunately, unlike the white supremacist so-called “movement”, Antifa and BLM ARE large, well-funded, influential terrorist organizations. It would be nice if the people on our side (or 80% on our side, or 60% or whatever), people who should be allies in the fight against progressive fascism, would stop ceding the rhetorical narrative to the enemy from the get go.

Why did the British Empire stop being an empire? Why did they withdraw from their territories and become...well, the wuss state they are now.
I mean, they once ruled the world. Aside from us, who rebelled and became independent, they seemed to control places like India, Australia, Canada and so on.
And then, they just...stopped. Were there a bunch of Karens who said "You can't control India! That's rayciss!"
Or what?
If you can point me to a good history of the end of their empire, that would be good too.

I've been away so I don't know if "Long Live Death" has been discussed in my absence, but I got my copy a couple days ago and IT IS GOOD. Concise, clear and informative. Its only drawback is all the typos
I proofread it yesterday and sent the author a list of corrections which I hope he will implement soon.That sounds snotty of me, doesn't it ... sorry. But it is a really good, solid read and I hate to see its value lessened by a bunch of easily corrected errors.

A. has been diagnosed with preliminary Stage 2 Invasive Malignant Melanoma. He is scheduled for a sentinel lymph node biopsy and a 4-5 hour surgery on Friday, August 28. Please pray that the cancer has not spread to his lymph nodes and for strength and peace for A.

Gen Jim Mattis has been on local TV the last few weeks, giving all WA residents a big pep talk on making sure to wear your mask.

The short version is that after World War II, Britain was dead broke (despite having won the war), exhausted, had just voted in Clement Attlee (welfare state, here we come!) and had neither the money nor the energy to administer that big chunk of the world upon which the sun never set.
Plus it was 1945, there was this new UN, winds of change were blowing (cue music here ...) and everyone was going for self-determination, just as they had in 1919.
Probably lots of books on the subject but two I would recommend - big fat doorstop books, both of them - are David Kynaston's "Austerity Britain: 1945-1951" and Martin Meredith's "The Fate of Africa," which is all about the postcolonial eras. It came out around 2005 but the situation has hardly improved since then, so it's still relevant.

My knowledge of WWI is as sparse as my knowledge of WWII is respectable.
First evah book on the topic, about finished now, is The Beauty and the Sorrow (Englund - Swedish historian/journalist).
Highly recommended. It's a running account, in small-ish segments, of about 20 different individuals, from all sides, in various parts of the world/war.
The format makes it ideal for picking up, reading 15 pages, then not touching it again for a few days, if that's the pattern that happens.
Lots of good stuff, and gaining a bit of grounding in the breadth and diversity of the war's players and places.

I don't know of a good single book that covers it, but it basically boils down to the fact that they simply couldn't maintain it. The British Empire never recovered from World War I, let alone World War II. At least two generations of their youngest and strongest were either killed, mutilated or exhausted. There wasn't enough left in the tank to hold on to what empire they had left, so they figured it better to save face and "grant independence" to their holdings, rather than face the possibility of being run out of them militarily. That happened to them once, as you'll recall, and they didn't like it.
It's truer than people realize that most of the things happening in the world today, and most of the things that have happened in the world over the last century, have been nothing more than the fallout of the First World War, arguably the biggest global turning point in human history.

I had to put up a new mailbox at my folks this morning. Some jackwagon destroyed it night before last. This is the second new mailbox I've put up in 6 months.
Some time early this year, maybe around Spring, someone ran off the road and knocked the old one and the paper box over. Did tremendous damage to the vehicle as there were pieces of headlight and plastic bumper and grill scattered all in the ditch. I could see their tracks. They got out and ran, of course.
So we put up a new mailbox and new post. Nice one. In about 6 months time, maybe less, that new box has been hit about 5 times. Warped it, broke the flag, and then destroyed it day before yesterday.
I was thinking it was likely someone was doing it on purpose, but then this morning I figured it out, with the help of a neighbor who just happened to see one of the previous incidents.
Out there this morning, there was a tremendous amount of landscaper traffic. Big F-350+ class trucks pulling trailers. Our road is apparently landscaper superhighway.
And they have these YUGE wide sideview mirrors, part of the "super towing" packages they get on those things. I got to wondering. And a neighbor saw me out there and stopped and told me.
He saw one of those jackwagons whack that box with his mirror.
What they do is drive way too fast, and happen to meet someone coming the other way in front of the house, also likely going too fast, and with those wide mirrors, get over and whop the mailbox.

I got to looking, and couldn't believe how cumbersome and big and how far some of those mirrors stick out. It's getting ridiculous. They must have some mirror size contest nowadays or something.
I've driven f-700 class trucks all the time, and pulled trailers with them, and never needed mirrors that damn big. The standard wing mirrors were fine and didn't stick out that much. Even had some of the convex ones mounted on the front bumper and never a problem.
You've got jackwagon lummoxes driving these things who drive too fast, probably fucking around on a damn cell phone, and then those ridiculous mirrors and this is what you get.

Oatmeal Raisin Cookies are an abomination that should never be made.
About the only other things I don't care for at all is coconut, carrot cake, and pineapple.
One year for my birthday a boss had a double fail in getting me first a slice of carrot cake for it, and then as a make good offered an oatmeal raisin cookie.

People have done that, tried to make indestructable mailboxes, but in some jurisdictions, you can be liable if serious damage with bodily harm is done.
What I did was a mount this steel piece (and old step off an industrial tractor thing) on the side of the post. That will protect the box -- and make the post take most of the impact. The old one had that up, but, being lazy, I didn't put it back up -- I did this time.
I'm thinking about extending it, and mounting a T-post to further anchor it.
I want to destroy those mirrors.

Depression is still not understood. But drugs do not seem to be the answer.
It's taking a look at your slow and steady progress upward. You may disagree, but you have had a lot to be thankful for in the last two years.
So it's like a slog up a tall peak. It grinds, has setbacks, occasional injuries or lost gear, but the view gets better the higher and higher you go. Try and enjoy the journey, or even a wild flower on the way.
For you, I recommend going to a place with nice people. A MoMeet is not that far away. But I do believe it is a skill to minimize the down, and focus on the up.

They do work amazingly well as bait for mouse traps. I keep a few on hand for that purpose. Since they have the approximate texture and tenacity of a Bandag retread, you can wedge them tightly into the trap's trigger, so tight the damned mice cannot winkle them out without making the trap fire.
And then you clear away the dead mouse, and the raisin is ready for mouse #2.

"Some unions and their Democratic allies in the state Legislature" are proposing a wealth tax on Californians who have more than $30 million in assets.
Not a surprise, but there are a few interesting twists:
1) The tax applies to all your assets world-wide, not just in California.
2) The tax also applies to anyone who has moved out of California in the last ten years, not just current residents.
3) And, best of all, the tax applies to anyone who has ever lived in California for more than ten years.
I've lived in California for more than ten years, moved out of California twenty-five years ago, and I would be subject to the tax if I had sufficient assets.
So, the preferred method is not an exit tax, but simply denying that moving out of state gets you out of that state's tax jurisdiction. This will obviously go through the Federal courts if it is enacted, but I bet there are already at least four votes on the Supreme Court supporting California's position.
I'm sure most of the people subject to this tax vote Democratic, but they may want to rethink this.
The tech lords may think that they are establishing a neo-feudal society, where they run everything, where their employees and government workers constitute the remnant of the middle class, and everyone else gets universal basic income and cheap drugs, but it is quite possible that at some point the tumbrels may well be coming for them, despite their plans.

I'd still argue it's WWI more than WWII, IMHO. WWI was the first mechanized war, the first wireless communication war, the first armor and air power war, the first war with anything approaching modern medicine, the biggest driver of the petroleum industry to date, and more. FDR was bad, but Wilson was just as bad or worse, and he got there first. Russian Empire, Austro-Hungarian Empire, Ottoman Empire, German Empire - all gone, poof. Britain and France permanently crippled. Even seemingly minor little things like Britain deciding to favor the House of Saud or Ho Chi Minh's bid for independence being ignored at Versailles rocked the world for decades. World War II certainly shaped the world in a lot of ways, but it didn't "fundamentally change" (h/t SCOAMF 0bama) the world to the degree that World War I did.
Sorry for ranting, I love talking about this stuff.

I started playing it this year. Basically if you've ever played any Unreal Engine 3rd person game with shooting you have dealt with the main mechanic of fortnite and know how each type of gun behaves. I have one full victory and a couple other top 10's. Where I suck is the building mechanic where you see people quickly build massive towers in seconds.

It's tough because we only marginally understand why they work, and the same molecule with different chirality can have completely different results in the same person. So all you can do is try them, and they each take at least two weeks to start and stop working.

They didn't find him for hours. He survived after several months in the hospital and a ton of metal rods, screws and plastic surgery.
He was a dynamite piano player and he managed to play again but he had to hold his whole left arm up and dangle his hand down to press the keys.
Damdest strange looking thing.
They found the driver. He made out pretty good in a settlement but payed a huge price.

I am on Norvasc (amlotidine?) for blood pressure, and I am experiencing side effects like extreme tiredness and dizziness. Going to have get the dosage reduced, or try an alternate. Hit me hard today. Had to lie down for a nap at 5:00. Got up later, went out to the garage, and huffed some oxygen out of the welding bottle. Feel fine now.

What happens is that the state declares: PER LAW WHICH WE HAVE JUST WRITTEN THESE PEOPLE OWE BACK TAXES TO THE STATE PER EGO DIXIT
They then send out a series of collection letters to "the best address" that can be found (IE the last address in the database from before the resident left the stinking state, usually) then per procedure in 90 days they issue a wage, bank , third party, or stock seizure garnishment based on a centralized database they get to look at that is mostly run by the IRS to locate assets.
They also get to seize any refunds from external states and the IRS and probably half of any military or gov-service pension until the debt is paid in full including penalty and interest and additional collection fees.
If you are in TX the state and the employer send a LOLGF letter, but I think even there if your bank has a presence in CA the bank meekly takes all funds that cannot be immediately identified as coming from pensions or other benefits. And good luck getting it back without suing the state in their own administrative tax court.
If you work for a company that does work in CA but work outside of the state, they serve your employer and probably they meekly pay up too.
This sort of tax seizure is abusive as Hell, and is far beyond anything like a social contract.

His mailbox at the shop had suffered similar damages in years past.
So, he tool some 3/16th thick oilfield pipe of the correct size, cut it in half lengthwise, and welded that to 3/16th thick flat plates for the sides, back and bottom.
He sized it perfectly to accept a standard (large) USPS approved cheap, stamped steel mailbox door, and of course drilled one side for rivets to accept the standard "flag" device.
It's mounted onto a 4" O.D. square tube with 1/4" wall thickness, which was filled with 5,000 psi concrete, and sunk four feet into the ground into an auger-drilled 12" diameter hole, with rebar welded to the sunken part of the pole.
That hole was then filled with the same 5,000 psi concrete.
He's had to replace that cheap, stamped steel door, precisely once.
Hearing him tell the story of watching some misguided high school punk take a mighty swing at it with an aluminum bat would even make Insomniac break out the laughter of great joy and extreme schadenfreude.
He built that mailbox about 22 years ago, and yes, it's still there, exactly so.

It's not ex post facto - the proposed law states that if you are a former resident of California, you can be taxed on your current assets.
The question is whether California can tax non-residents - they're aren't proposing retroactive taxation.

So, I was at Lowe's looking at some saw horses with my husband this evening. We were looking at these cool Kobalt ones that fold up into itself and looks like a 42" 4x4 with a handle. They are pretty heavy and can hold 1300 lbs. while we we looking at one and figuring out how to open it and close it, 2 more jumped off the top shelf and tried to kill me. Luckily it just hit my left elbow so it just grazed My left ankle instead of landing on my foot and probably breaking it. The interesting part is not a soul in Lowe's came to investigate The really loud crashing noise of 2 metal saw horses falling about 4 feet to the ground. They are lucky I'm not the suing type...

There has got be some dick size like thing going with those side-view mirrors. I'd hadn't paid to close attention to them until now, but they're getting ridiculous.
With really big truck, the mirrors are high enough they're not as much of a problem, but for the F-350 class, they aren't high enough. I've pulled trailers with pickups and larger and never had need of mirrors that wide.
It's called driving carefully and being aware of your surroundings. Pay attention. Many of these idiots have no business driving rubber band powered compact cars, much less trucks and trailers.

Not directly related, but reminded me of a story I was reading earlier, I think on Quillette.
The guy was in a Japanese POW camp. After the Japanese surrender, no one knew whether to shit or go blind. The camp guards fucked off, and the commandant confined himself to his office.
After some time, U.S. Navy planes spotted the camp (they were looking for them) and started dropping food, medicine, and clothing, in 55 gallon drums with parachutes.
Thing is, some of the chutes didn't work, so they had 55 gallon drums crashing through the roofs of their huts and so on.
The guy was saying to himself "Just great. I've survived all this, and now I'm gonna get killed by a barrel of food."
There's more to the story. Worth reading.

I would be very comfortable arguing that this is an ex post facto law - the state is seeking to impose taxes based on a state of affairs that existed before the law was passed.
There biggest problem would be that they would be depending on other states to enforce California's laws, and I think other states (Like Texas and Florida) would tell them to go pound sand, we're not enforcing your tax laws.

If they stocked kimchi, I'd try it, but I don't think they carry it. One secret of their low costs is keeping the number of SKUs low. Another secret: they work the employees hard; everyone wears multiple hats. And they have the fastest checkouts I've seen in retail.
Now that I think of it, the 'German' foods they carry really aren't very tasty either.
I got a good case of cyclospora from their bagged salad around June 1. Still haven't completely shaken it.

I found one that's not too bad. Puffed millet bars. Like like Rice Krispy cookies, but made with puffed millet bonded together with slightly caramel-y sugar. Has a slightly nutty flavor.
I also got some Korean puffed rice rolls. Too bland.

I used to live across the street from a mom-and-pop store owned by an old Russian couple. They were sweet, but walking into the place gave you the feeling you were walking into, say, a Moscow store in 1975. (I think the non-Russians in the neighborhood bought only beer and cigarettes at the place, which kept it afloat.)
Most of the food on the sparsely stocks shelves was from Russia - pickled beets and potatoes in cans. From time to time, I tried the candy and sweets- and the old babuska would say to me at the register, "Ah, thees, thees is very good!" Then I'd get it home - and find I had purchased a chocolate bar that was old and stale, with a white coating on it, fruitcake that was weirdly dry, chocolate candy that tasted like cardboard, and cookies that tasted like chemicals. Not only did the store look and smell like Moscow 1975, I think that's when the food was made. I noticed the canned foods didn't have expiration dates stamped on them, so those sweet old Russians were probably selling botulism in a can to their fellow emigrants.
But they were friendly and very happy to be Americans. The old man always wore a T shirt with a US flag on it.

As I recall, of course the Russians quickly imagined foul play/bad faith, and we had to try to explain to them the idiocy of liability-driven things like expiration dates (most of them). Kind of perfect - the worst of Russia (mistrust and xenophobia) and the worst of America (wasteful crippling stupid defensive liability procedures).
Someone told me the food aid guys just had vendors not put expiration dates on products that were bought for aid programs - just to avoid the problem.

I've never bought bagged salads from Aldis, but I was buying salad kits from other grocery stores until they started recalling those salad kits because of e coli. I haven't gotten sick from them, but now I'm wary. Too bad, because they're a quick and easy summer lunch, when you don't feel like cutting up stuff to make a salad from scratch.
Aldis is good for some things, like paper goods and canned tuna and beer and wine and milk and coffee (and their imported chocolate bars are the bomb), but I've never really liked the look of their produce.

Our aldi has amazing produce, so it may just be a specific store issue. Their cherries have been especially good lately, and we get their raspberries and romaine routinely. We just clean it with vinegar water.
You are right about the chocolate- it is amazing good.

I knew bagged salad is risky. It wasn't only Aldi brand that was affected. There were several different store brands of salad that were sourced identically (it doesn't come from Germany.) But Aldi sells em for $1.19, while Kroger sells the exact same thing for $2.79. I like salad, and the trots aren't a very serious affliction. I used to rinse the salad before eating, but that does about as much good as putting an N95 mask on it.

Koreans have a different concept of personal space, and the etiquette of low-energy/velocity collisions, etc, so you can be bumped - hard - by a shopping cart, and not even have an acknowledgement, much less apology. I actually love it.
On the golf course, I've been hit into by Koreans behind us - but the ball was rolling. Clearly no concept that this called for any signal or wave or anything. I think Korean culture plus very crowded/limited golf courses means hitting into the group ahead - as long as it's rolling, not in the air - is no big deal.

I was under the impression the first Muppets were Wilkins and Wontkins from Wilkins Coffee ads from the late 50s. And no, I'm not a huge Muppet fanatic, I know this because my kid stumbled upon a reel of Wilkins Coffee ads on YouTube. That shit is hilarious. In about 50% of the ads, Wilkins murders Wontkins for not wanting some Wilkins Coffee. For example, Wilkins will ask Wontkins "do you want some Wilkins Coffee?" while pointing a cannon at him. Wontkins says something like "no, I don't like coffee". And then Wilkins blasts him with the fuggin cannon, then turns it to the camera and asked you "Do YOU want some Wilkins Coffee?"
It's so over the top, I thought it was a parody at first. My boys are literally rolling around on the couch laughing at the ad roll. It's brutal. So politically incorrect. Look it up for yourself for some laughs.

This is real rich as you dance on the metaphorical graves of those who went to Charlottesville to defend Confederate statues, who were far more on your side than the Left will ever be. And you're sitting there yucking it up about a Governor calling in the National Guard on a legally permitted rally, which a judge affirmed, and the cops pushing attendees into antifa who were trying to kill them. And about a young man going to jail for multiple life sentences even though he was fleeing a mob trying to kill him (one of whom admitted on camera to pointing a gun at him) and had no intent to kill anyone. At worst he should have been charged with manslaughter, and many members of the mob should have been charged with attempted murder.
You can't even correctly identify antifa, whose name literally means anti-fascist, as Communist. They're not fucking fascists and all you do is reinforce the Left's memes against nationalism, and in favor of Communism, when you call them that. All because Jonah Goldberg wrote a cute little book whose logical endgame is pretty much every government before the colonial American government was left wing, which makes no sense.
By the way, the tiki torch thing was the night before and went off without a hitch. And there were by eyewitness accounts at least 1000 people there to defend Confederate statues that day.
I don't know how you come off preaching any sort of unity when you celebrate people to your Right being taken out by an enemy that will gladly try to kill you in the streets too, if you ever bother to try to take to them. You're a Nazi to them too. But there you'll be, calling anyone who notices patterns of behavior and the falling white demographics in the USA a "Nazi" won't you? Whites can't possibly have anyone organizing for their interests when the Left has people like you to enforce their Overton Window for them. I'd say the media has been lying about the total population (the media lying is a real shocker, I know) to help with vote fraud. The more people claimed to be in the US, the higher the vote totals can be. We've been told for a while now that the birth rate in the US is down, except with illegals.

As we were chatting, just because I was waiting for an Uber, they were there and this being a friendly town, one of the guys mentioned that they were headed out to see a live band in a while...and then everyone kind of froze for several uncomfortable seconds.

Picking up on my vibe, another answered, sotto voce, with a sly smile, "Well, we're kind of rebellious."
I said: "Me too. Always have been. If you young folks wouldn't mind an old greybeard dropping by, I'd love to give them some business and enjoy some live music. At this point, ANY kind of live music!"
They said, you'd be more than welcome!

I was very careful not to bring up politics, but gleaned several things from the group: they hate Polis. One of the young ladies said she wished he was up for re-election so she could vote against him, and they all concurred. And, it was one of those things where you are speaking conspiratorily and pick up on the vibe, I had a distinct feeling they were not voting Biden.

A related, insidious aside is that the "primary source" for every leftist organization spouting this line (many of them "official" legal Bar Associations) is the SPLC. They notoriously over include any right of center group, and any group an proposing immigration policy other than No Border as a "hate group" --often through guilt-by-association with anyone who's ever appeared on the pages of their website who said something that could be taken out of context etc.
Worse, the SPLC defines "white nationalism" as anyone advocating what they call advocacy for a "white ethno state" and then defines anyone advocating said "white ethno state" as a "hate group" (and evidence of "rising white supremacy). It gets very convoluated but they play a shell game by defining anyone who notices that the left is, consciously, and through legal policy, replacing the indigenous electorate by the Third World as advocating a "white ethno state" --when the chief objection of most to that policy is not the ethnic/racial composition of the new immigrants as such, but the fact that the current trajectory just replaces massive, unprecedented percentages of those with any cultural background in American values by those who do not, without the operation of assimilation to American values that held us together in the past.
And the biggest (sad) joke of the whole SPLC approach is to then portray whites as a soon-to-be minority becoming increasingly racist over their incipient replacement, while deriding those who notice the replacement policy as "conspiracy theorists." Again, its not about the race to most white people, but the inconsistency of their whole shell game, even in their own terms, is mind boggling.
And this whole, rotton, fallacious, manipulative game of the SPLC gets the Good Housekeeping seal from every institution that has been taken over by the left, and in circular fashion gets regurgitated by every institution as the irrefutable proof that our country is just filled with racist whites but-for the ability of increasingly authoritarian government to tamp it down by taking away our freedom.
