I mean, coddle the kid. Give them something to attract their attention. Take them to the bathroom.

When we lived in Marquette Michigan, my granddaughter had a class trip at the end of the school year and they went to the beach for a picnic. The beach was on Lake Superior and the kids jumped from ice berg to ice bergJune 8th! People always described our weather as 9 months of good sledding and 3 months of fair sledding.

However, After we had our nose bloodied several times, and especially after Kasserine, Mr. Atkinson used a line that - when I read it - sent chills down my spine. He had given a fairly frank assessment of our lukewarm performance of the war - but then he started bringing up the fact that our resources that were coming into the theater were unsurmountable. For every tank or truck destroyed in battle, we were shipping 3 or 4 more into the field every day. Our industrial might started flexing. That wasn't the line that made me quiver - it was that "The Americans had begun to Hate."
At that point, the tide of the theater was irrevokably turned. Our GI's fought no longer just because they were told to, but because they HATED our enemy. They hated that they had to be there, that they had to take up arms and be away from their families - perhaps never to return.
I am beginning to Hate. It's not a feeling that I welcome and every ounce of reason is fighting it - but I cannot restrain it for long. When I heard about the man in Portland who was beaten for trying to defend a fellow citizen from a mob - I begin to hate. When I hear about law enforcement officers being shot, having bricks thrown at their heads and fireworks being used against them, I begin to hate.
Thankfully my immediate area doesn't seem to be impacted by this - but if it does - my hate will manifest itself I'm afraid.

I'm not a socially aware person in the least. But even I - even I! - know not to park my shopping cart and fat ass in the middle of an aisle, or hold up traffic behind me to let some land whale debouche next to the curb, or scratch off lotto tickets or arrange my change by denomination and serial number at the counter when people are waiting to pay for their coffee, or waltz into the store while I'm behind them wanting to use the gas pump they're parked at.

The swampy lake region downstream of the 3 Gorges Dam was turned into farmland (rice fields). They have had the gates on at the damn at full tilt boogie for weeks, and flooded out a lot of farmland. There will be food shortages coming up in China.
China had been able to feed itself for years. You don't see hunger on the streets of Chinese cities like you do in India.
Now, not so sure. Perhaps they have lost the Mandate of Heaven. They will need to buy a lot of grain and soy beans from Australia, Argentina and the US and Canada.

they ask a lot of these workers. The best ones an perform triage. They know to take a second away from a cluster F to help someone who needs a simple ID check. But they likely will come in for a verbal attack by the person they were serving first. Handling these issues takes skill. Some that man the self checkout are skiled, and many are not.

Not to be too contrarian, but I always considered it human ingenuity. Used in quite a few societies. Cheap material that is still used in shoes even if only used as a component in soles and heels, My Mom and Aunt swore by the Dr. Scholls wooden sandals, claimed they were kind to their feet. Those Candies ones were popular about 20 to25 years back. I still have the wooden sandals I wore in Japan as a small boy sitting on the book shelf.

That depends on the state. In a common law state a common-law marriage is every bit as legal as one that is recorded. All it takes to be married in Texas is for two people to hold themselves out as husband and wife (or husband and husband, or wife and wife, I guess).

I read where in Chinese Restaurants usually a family orders family style. Several dishes are served at a table, some of the dishes aren't finished and there is quite a bit of waste. I believe that is probably true.

Yeah, they've started a "Clean Your Plate" campaign to reduce restaurant waste. Restaurants are being told to reduce portion size, among other things.

She had already buried her husband and had just asked for help in getting VA coverage. He husband won the MOH at Anzio. I was able to see his medal and read the citation.

I believe, without any more evidence than is already known publicly, they got married in a church of their choice, and told the state to go f**k themselves when it came to getting a marriage license.
I don't know how much of that is going on these days, probably more than most of us realize.
Why ask the state to bless your marriage, when they're obviously willing to use the power of the state to put YOUR marriage on equal footing with abominable couplings otherwise.

I always thought the purpose of common law marriage was to protect the woman. Texas has no alimony, but community property, so if a man (particularly in the more frontier days) shacks up with a woman and calls her his wife, and she is his wife in everything but ceremony, then dumps her, she had nothing, but if she could prove they held themselves out as being married, she owned half of the cattle and half of the ranch.
