CBD - thank you for this work of art. My first glance at it reminded me of all the times at my grandparent's place (we nicknamed it the ponderosa). He had a pond where we, including my aunts/uncles/cousins, would gather on Sundays to skate. Much simpler and enjoyable times back then. Actually brought a tear to my eye while reminiscing about it. Thank you.

This spring and summer have been awful, now this painting gives us a preview of the winter of our discontent. Winter is a tough season during the very best of times.
The Mid-Morning Art Thread is a great feature by the way, my comment on the season of winter not withstanding. Once upon a time when I was young I majored in Art History, which is really just a history major seen through the lens of created objects. You can learn a lot about a culture by examining its art. Posted by: rhennigantx at August 17, 2020 09:44 AM (JFO2v) 65
I rather like this painting. The frozen, somewhat bleak, landscape with the dark figures is effective. I'm not sure what the youngsters are doing but ice fishing comes to mind. Claus did some Impressionistic works and this one sort of qualifies. No idea what size the canvas is but it seems to me that it should be a smaller one. The scene doesn't need huge areas.
The indistinct figures of the children makes me think he isn't painting specific people but is showing a common scene, a ritual, of children on the ice. Posted by: JTB at August 17, 2020 09:44 AM (7EjX1) 66

Last sheriff in Ottawa County Ohio had to make a rule. You could get rescued off the ice or out of the lake once a day. If you turned around and went right back out and needed to get rescued a second time in one day, you was in a heap o' trouble. Fishermen challenged the rule. They just couldn't see how that was fair.

In Rick Atkinson's "An Army at Dawn" - a great book about the North African theater in WW2 - about halfway through reading it, you got the impression that we were a bunch of bumbling fools, playing war with a foe that was better prepared, better trained, better motivated and generally better than we American's were. In fact our allies would routinely call our GI's "UnServiceable" as a tongue-in-cheek homage to our national acronym.
However, After we had our nose bloodied several times, and especially after Kasserine, Mr. Atkinson used a line that - when I read it - sent chills down my spine. He had given a fairly frank assessment of our lukewarm performance of the war - but then he started bringing up the fact that our resources that were coming into the theater were unsurmountable. For every tank or truck destroyed in battle, we were shipping 3 or 4 more into the field every day. Our industrial might started flexing. That wasn't the line that made me quiver - it was that "The Americans had begun to Hate." At that point, the tide of the theater was irrevokably turned. Our GI's fought no longer just because they were told to, but because they HATED our enemy. They hated that they had to be there, that they had to take up arms and be away from their families - perhaps never to return. I am beginning to Hate. It's not a feeling that I welcome and every ounce of reason is fighting it - but I cannot restrain it for long. When I heard about the man in Portland who was beaten for trying to defend a fellow citizen from a mob - I begin to hate. When I hear about law enforcement officers being shot, having bricks thrown at their heads and fireworks being used against them, I begin to hate. Thankfully my immediate area doesn't seem to be impacted by this - but if it does - my hate will manifest itself I'm afraid. Posted by: Defenestratus at August 17, 2020 10:48 AM (9V81o) 178

Kasserine was bad. Brand new, not battle tested Americans versus the Afrika Korp who had been in combat for years.
What is forgotten and deserves much more attention is the performance of the American artillery during the fight. The Germans were stopped by that and by the determination of individuals and units who, though beaten and bloody, kept fighting. The avalanche of men and material turned the tide there and through all the theaters of the war. Posted by: Winston, dreg of society at August 17, 2020 11:00 AM (d9Irc) 219

Millie's "husband" is apparently a spiritual marriage, not a legal one. And he is the father of their child. (according to Tore)
-------------- That depends on the state. In a common law state a common-law marriage is every bit as legal as one that is recorded. All it takes to be married in Texas is for two people to hold themselves out as husband and wife (or husband and husband, or wife and wife, I guess). Posted by: Caesar North of the Rubicon at August 17, 2020 11:09 AM (jK8Z7) I believe, without any more evidence than is already known publicly, they got married in a church of their choice, and told the state to go f**k themselves when it came to getting a marriage license. I don't know how much of that is going on these days, probably more than most of us realize. Why ask the state to bless your marriage, when they're obviously willing to use the power of the state to put YOUR marriage on equal footing with abominable couplings otherwise. The Icebird Suite (1919) was written by Chipper Stravinsky, younger brother of Igor. It was performed once in London, but the performance was interrupted shortly into the first movement by the angry audience. No copies of the suite are know to survive.

My marriage in Texas was common-law for the first ten years. Then they passed a law allowing you to register a common-law marriage with the state. It looked like the relationship was going to last so we drove to the Harris County Courthouse and made it official. A honeymoon at Bennigans followed.

I always liked the idea of Common Law Marriage from a philosophical point of view, and note that it is a very very old idea, arguably the oldest form of marriage of all. The concept holds that a man and woman can decide they are married, and they don't need a Church to say grace over it, and they don't need the State to give them it's permission; they have the innate power to make this agreement on their own.
of course this has problems, and Church and State get brought in to enforce things, which is their primary purpose. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 17, 2020 11:18 AM (Kpl3J) 301

Posted by: Tom Servo at August 17, 2020 11:18 AM (Kpl3J) I always thought the purpose of common law marriage was to protect the woman. Texas has no alimony, but community property, so if a man (particularly in the more frontier days) shacks up with a woman and calls her his wife, and she is his wife in everything but ceremony, then dumps her, she had nothing, but if she could prove they held themselves out as being married, she owned half of the cattle and half of the ranch. I would like to let all know that the size of your Penis really matters in your relationship or marriage. I got married to my wife about 1 month after we met in a photo studio, we lived happily for the first 3 months of our marriage until my wife and I started having quarrels at home because I couldn't satisfy her in bed with my little penis. Actually my penis was very small, it measured about 4.5 inch long on erection and I am 51 years old. My wife said it was forbidden by the women of this world. My wife started sleeping with other men outside. Sometimes i will return from work without finding my wife at home and whenever i call or ask her where she was, she will always snub at me and sometimes just tell me to go get a larger dick. All this continued for a long time and it hurt me so much that I was at the edge of breaking up on the marriage till when I read about a doctor called DR.Moses Buba. online. I never thought i could smile and be in a happy marriage again if not for the help of DR.Moses Buba. I got the doctors Emails
