Great job, everyone involved. Seattle activists have been demanding that the city cut the police force for months, although it's not clear why. Seattle has fewer officer per capita than...Portland, Maine. It's not a particularly big police department. Police Chief Best was also upset that her police force was ordered not to police the CHAZ/CHOP, resulting in four people getting shot and two people, including a teenager, dying.
Seattle wasn't letting her do her job, she was being harassed at her home by protesters, and they were cutting her salary by $100,000 (something they never did to her white dude predecessor) in the name of "Black Lives Matter." Sometimes irony is too much, gotta ragequit.

this is a shame. I really liked her. I met her in a coffee shop when my boy and I went in for a breakfast sammich before work/school. She was very nice. took the time to say hello.
I thought she did well under the circumstances, and hope she will be "red pilled" I would love to see her interviewed and give her honest assessment of the mayor during the CHAZ situation.

You can bet the vast majority of the mobs do not live there.
Best is almost a sympathetic figure in all this. I think she was a reasonably competent LEO and comes across well in meetings. Mayor and City Council put her in a no win position when she decided enforcing the law was important.

Population of Seattle is 750,000, while population of the greater Seattle Metropolitan Area is about 4 million. So my guess is that exactly like in a lot of places in the 60s and 70s, those who can afford to move out of the city limits, and maybe the area continues to do ok. Which is a shame. Some cities (actual city limits) did make or were making a comeback. (NYC and Chicago were great comebacks. Other cities were improving). Now I suspect we are back to the 1970s, where, as an example, Philadelphia proper was a dangerous shithole, but the surrounding suburbs were (and are) beautiful.

I think Frasier shot one shoe in Seattle. It was the one about Frasier's 1000th show or whatever. The Seattle parts even looked funny, like they would shot on video and not film. They just had a weird look about them.
I know The Office has at least had former actors go to Scranton for some baseball game or festival. But really, they were all shot in CA as far as I know.

The Seattle city council voted near-unanimously to cut both the Seattle police budget and Best's salary. (The only no vote was the crazed socialist, who wanted to completely gut the police.)
Best's salary was going to be cut by 40% (the city council reduced the size of the cut at the last minute). The city council cut the salaries of the entire police command staff by about the same percentage.
Seattle police pensions are based on the last five years of salary. One assumes all the command staff has enough time in for a full pension, so unless you've gotten a promotion recently, every member of the command staff will take a permanent pension hit if the keep working.
Seattle is going to lose about all of its senior police leadership, and soon.

But a stopped clock is right twice a day, and I actually agree that ALL government agencies, including the police should have the fat trimmed.
When I heard that Seattle paid its Police Chief 280K/year my first thought was that was a buttload of money. Then they mentioned cuts to the "10 highest ranking officers" of the Dept which leads me to believe that there are at least several other bureaucrats in Seattle PD making over 200K/year.
This wouldn't, in itself, be the worst thing in the world, except the nature of all these "public servant" unions ties their phoney baloney pensions (earned by the time they're in their late 40s in many cases) to their top wage year, in which case Seattle (like most other blue cities) is building up huge pension liabilities.
So hell yes "defund" the fatass bureaucrats of all stripes. I realize now isn't the time to play into their narrative, but I find it ironic that the progressives are now the budget hawks and the "conservatives" are arguing against touching sacred cow municipal budgets.
But yes, let them play by their own rules, Alinsky and all that....

The whole idea of funding is a red herring to the real issues of policing now.
I think the biggest determinant of whether city government is turning its jurisdiction into a shithole is not how much it funds the police, but the political/public support (or lack thereof) it gives to its officers in carrying out their duties, the ROE, and how they react to officer involved shootings.
So you can "fund" "defund" etc up or down the wazoo, but at the end of the day if you have the officers' backs, let the citizens know that the city values law abiding people over criminals, and you'll be fine.
If not: Chicago, Portland, Seattle, etc. etc.

I know a few people who are hardcore D. They are not happy with certain things, but I don't believe they will ever vote R. I simply think they will NOT vote. Which some have already told me is their plan. They are not voting for President, and may not even vote at all.

We should be encouraging these people to establish an online presence and reach out to others like them. Create either a vote Libertarian or Vote Green protest vote movement.
Not only would it freak out the Democrats by showing them just how many votes they could have had and didn't, if enough people do it, it'll give those parties a bit of legitimacy and momentum they currently lack.

The surburban Portland county I live in, which used to be reliably Republican, now leans Democrat, due to people fleeing Portland. They haven't done a lot of damage yet, but that's only because there aren't enough of them.
I was near despair reading a thread on Nextdoor a while ago where all these Karens were excitedly discussing the prospects of banning plastic straws in the surburban county. I thought: "If you want to micromanage people's lives, why don't you move back to Portland?"

There's a split between posters, and people. I'm of the group that believes the BEST people are leaving, and I want them to come here to Texas! I'm not afraid of people moving in, I think those leaving bad places will be a great addition.

I have seen it argued both ways. But there is are reason even liberal restaurants have stickers that say "don't California my Texas". Sure when a conservative moves in it is a good thing. But a lot of people move to better states to improve their finances, but keep the politics they grew up with. That has been proven time and time. There is a reason why so many Dems rulers in VA were born in the North. I am not talking one or two, I am talking like 20 out of 30 in the big posts.

The surburban Portland county I live in, which used to be reliably Republican, now leans Democrat, due to people fleeing Portland. They haven't done a lot of damage yet, but that's only because there aren't enough of them.
The county sheriff still doesn't allow visible homeless camps, derelict tweaker RV's, or people begging on private property outside of stores.

I have seen it argued both ways. But there is are reason even liberal restaurants have stickers that say "don't California my Texas". Sure when a conservative moves in it is a good thing. But a lot of people move to better states to improve their finances, but keep the politics they grew up with. That has been proven time and time. There is a reason why so many Dems rulers in VA were born in the North. I am not talking one or two, I am talking like 20 out of 30 in the big posts.

Not necessarily true. You also need to take into consideration the decisions that businesses- large employers- are making in reaction to this madness. When they relocate, they bring workers and their politics with them. The city I live in is overrun with transplants from NY/NJ who moved for their jobs. It is now pretty firmly in the Democrat column. I am sure the same is happening in certain cities in Texas with all of the transplants from CA.

Not necessarily true. You also need to take into consideration the decisions that businesses- large employers- are making in reaction to this madness. When they relocate, they bring workers and their politics with them. The city I live in is overrun with transplants from NY/NJ who moved for their jobs. It is now pretty firmly in the Democrat column. I am sure the same is happening in certain cities in Texas with all of the transplants from CA.

the cities to the suburbs. The people moving long distances are
conservatives trying to get a long ways away from the madness. We have
to encourage conservatives to move into conservative areas as allies.

You are a a reg, but I am not buying it. Are you referring to a particular situation? In my experience, conservatives figure each other out quickly. Even in a deep blue city I can spot a conservative in idle conversation with ease. Sure there are a few closed societies in the country like Savannah GA and Charleston SC or some parts of WV. But for the most part, if you are a conservative, you will be welcomed. I guess I am missing something here.

Someone needs to gently invite her attention to Cloward-Piven. A functional, just and safe society rejects socialism as an alternative. Therefore modern liberalism seeks to make society dysfunctional and unsafe, while manufacturing injustice using historical grievances and the amplifying petty slights (all people bear) via their doctrine of intersectionality.
Her resignation is a feature not a flaw. Murdering the average citizen for rejecting socialism is a feature not a flaw. Having their supporters shot in self defense is a feature not a flaw, as each incident pushes us one step closer to widespread open violence.
They KNOW, socialism doesn't come to America without blood. They are willing to both spend it and spill it as necessary to get autocratic hard socialism.

I can't laugh too much, I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop in CA. I too am looking at an exit strategy. If not for my mother, I'd have bailed already.
I'm really wondering how many of these mayors and governors are going to suddenly become very interested in real estate investments of all the areas they've helped to vacate. I don't even need to wonder if anything will come of it.

I graduated from Chapel Hill in '81 and then left the state. Came back two years ago after getting laid off from my job. When I came home to visit over the years, there was a discernible change in the culture due to the expansion of RTP, so I wasn't blindsided when I came back. Still, just another place that I have lived where my vote doesn't count. At least here, that's only true in the local and USRep elections.
I always loved that state really. Too bad so many, well, you know the rest.
