The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

Where's the guy who is always saying, "And so it begins?"

New York City has been reeling for several years: the garbage isn't being picked up, the roads are a disaster, city services in general are crap. But the tax receipts have been fine, so where is the money going? de Blasio's pet projects and increasing administration costs and progressive wet dreams like "outreach programs" and universal preschool programs and rejiggering the streets to accommodate bicycles at the expense of automobiles, and on and on.

de Blasio came into office with a two billion dollar budget surplus, courtesy of Bloomberg's fiscal policies. Oh, Bloomberg spent money, but he didn't bust the budget.
But shifting resources from basic city services like police and garbage and streets to "youth centers" and the NYC public schools (famously wasteful and underachieving) was a disaster. The collapse of NYC didn't begin as a result of Sino-Lung-Rot, it began as a result of the current mayor's gutting of those basic services; the very things that kept the banks and the ad companies and the fashion houses and the big retailers in town.

Mayor de Blasio threatens laying off 22K NYC workers if the federal gov't doesn't bail him out -- it's 'painfully real'

Does anyone want to bet where the layoffs are going to hit hardest? Police, fire, street cleaning, garbage collection, parks maintenance...that's my bet.

Midnight basketball and those "youth centers" and all of the leftist indoctrination sites will do just fine. Trans outreach will be untouched, and maybe even expanded, because they are always the hardest hit by financial dislocation. And the children of course! And there will always be money to paint BLM slogans on the street outside of Trump buildings!

New York City functioned best when the boring basic stuff got taken care off, and the other stuff became secondary. Giuliani did well when he focused on quality of life issues...he proved that the "Broken Windows" theory was absolutely correct. He fixed crime and decay, and everything else fixed itself! Private investment in NYC boomed, because the city was seen by the world as being safe and clean. Hell, even the subways were okay.

But all of that has changed, but don't be fooled by the Sandinista-loving buffoon in Gracie Mansion: he pushed NYC over the cliff when he was elected; it just took awhile to hit bottom.

19 It should be "painfully real." The government at all levels has been in the business of actively denying reality for as long as I have been alive. The buck always stops somewhere else. There's always someone bigger and richer to insulate you from consequences.

NYC should be left out to dry. So should all of the cities and states that have eroded their economies for the purposes of gaining political power and increasing their control. There should be no federal bailouts for any of them. Not just because it is unfair, but also because the malefactors should suffer the consequences for once.

When I dust off and shine up my inner confidence, I still believe that reckoning with reality may yet still be possible without being fatal. That window is closing.

All anyone has to do is hold out until there is a change in the administration and it is back to business as usual. If the money flees NY and doesn't come back, their might be change. But if Biden wins, there is renewed hope for the grift to resume. The leviathan has to die in order for us to truly fix these problems. No one person can do it.

Yes. Like how during "government shutdowns" Obama erected barriers around national monuments. There is a hierarchy of needs for cities, and at the absolute top - from which *all* other things branch - is sanitation and peace. These will be attacked first, because it will make the place unlivable and hold the population as hostages surrounded by filth and violence and disease.

They did this in Colorado Springs a few years back. There was a budget dispute, and they shut off garbage collection and park maintenance to "save money" - that is, to bring the population to heel.

The lockdowns and the decriminalization of crime will kill NYC forever. I do not think even this city - as iconic as it is - will ever come back in my lifetime. It will take at least 25 straight years of nothing but Giuliani administrations from top to bottom to even get back to where we were before DeBolshevik.

It really is a tragedy what he and his ilk did to this city. I hope he rots in Hell for this.

When a house goes up for sale here in suburban NY, it lasts about 2 weeks. It has slowed down with a potential school start on the horizon. But I have no doubt it will pick up in the Spring.

The bill is coming due, and a lot of people don';t want to get stuck with the check. It's going to be the taxapayers, already paying the highest taxes in the nation who get to foot the bill.

137 O/T, but if you want to understand how corrupt, perverse and destructive the American popular media are, you need only consume foreign media. I like some of the Korean TV shows. Those people *really* understand vengeance. Their revenge dramas are quite good. They're dense and you practically need an org chart to follow them, but whatever.

Entertainment value aside, they really underscore how broken and shitty our media have become. In dialogue, they don't disparage their homes, their country or their culture. It isn't all wine and roses (what revenge tale could be), but characters will sometimes gently castigate each other about buying non-Korean goods and foods, for example, particularly from China. The characters - if the subject comes up (and it usually doesn't) - are patriotic. When a story theme is about government or industrial perfidy, the heroes take out the bad actors (usually either death or prison - I don't see a common trend there) and let others try again.

It is a completely inversion of what we produce.

Posted by: CBD at 11:00 AM

This is a good point regarding focusing on the boring, but necessary things.

I have been watching a lot of Modern Marvels lately and one of the recent ones I watched was regarding tunnels. In addition, I watched an Engineering Disasters episode on a similar area.

The disasters area talked about a failure of the piping that is routed all underground throughout New York City area. For water flow as well as natural gas.

And they noted that the pipes that are used all over the city were all originally installed 50-100 years ago. So there is currently a massive project that has been underway for years to completely replace all the piping under the city to prevent any more disasters of failure of flooding or gas leaks leading to explosions.

Obviously that costs a LOT of money. But it's necessary in order to prevent catastrophes that would cost even more (including lives).

I bet most people do not even think about the cost of basic things like that to not only maintain current infrastructure, but also replace very old infrastructure.

Just with that basic cost, there shouldn't be any "petty cash" available in the budget for any frivolous pet projects or issues of politicians. If they are spending on those projects? Then they're taking that money from where it actually should be spent.

146 Where's the guy who is always saying, "And so it begins?"

Portland a couple of days ago banned single-family zoning - anybody who has a vacant lot or an old house in Portland can tear down the house and put up a fourplex without parking, and there is nothing the neighbors can do about it.

I've been reading online discussions where people have been giddily envisioning a vast wave of fourplex construction in Portland, to accommodate all those new people who will be moving to Portland. After all, Everyone Wants To Live Here, especially rich people.

Uh, kids? You just elected a DA who doesn't believe in prosecuting anybody but the cops, there was a special election yesterday that insured that the cop-haters have a majority of the city council, and the self-described "Antifa mayor" has an excellent chance of beating Ted Wheeler in November.

Property crime is exploding, shootings are up 400%, and people are getting murdered in Portland at the highest rate in thirty years.

You can stop worrying about gentrification. These leftists think that the growth in Portland's population and wealth just happened automatically - not that it was a specific set of conditions that allowed gentrification to occur. The shutdown, boarded-up downtown is just a preview of what will happen to the city generally.

These people think that virtue-signaling is costless - that Portland can pass feel-good laws defunding the cops, eliminating the police unit that tried to prevent gang killings, and decriminalize property crime, and there will be no consequences for doing so.

A very insightful book I read on the First American Civil War was simply titled "1861", about all the events that led up to the outbreak of War later that year.

One of the things I learned was that, contrary to popular belief that the War just sprang out of nowhere, Citizens on *both* sides, North and South, spent the Spring and Early Summer of 1861 massively stocking up on weapons and ammunition, and forming their own miliitia's. That's why as soon as the "Go" signal was given, everyone was ready and went after it. That's why both sides could call up armies seemingly out of nowhere.

For decades I've been saying: "When they come door-to-door for our guns." I think you'd have a split in the military/police who would refuse to do so -- and that would be where the main violence would occur ... initially.

But as much as it feels inevitable now ... I think you're right about the apathy and cowardice of the general populace. I'd rather stay and fight if we can make a go of it (need a William Wallace figure to arise -- perhaps Trump post-Presidency -- to "unite the clans"), but am planning on eventually needing to leave the country if the Dems ever get control again.

I've been thinking about that for awhile. It's possible that the more centrist voters from both parties will gravitate to a new, centrist party and form a majority. The only problem is that centrists usually get co-opted by the left. However, even assuming that doesn't happen, in the long run the desire to win will take us back to a two party system. With that, <50% of the people are losers, whereas with 3 parties, it could be as much as 66%.

And at least some of those alienated white people are uncomfortable in the GOP because of Republicans' reputation on race.

Of course, the Democrats and their media allies are eager to see spectral evidence of racism everywhere, for obvious reasons. Is it reasonable to detect a racial dynamic when a white Republican president criticizes a nonwhite Democratic member of Congress? It depends: Did he also argue that a federal judge should be disqualified from a case because "he is a Mexican"? (The judge in question was born in Indiana and is of Salvadoran background, but, never mind.) Paul Ryan, who endorsed Donald Trump, was right to call that a "textbook definition" of racism. The bigoted comments about the parents of the late Army captain Humayun Khan, the housing-discrimination settlement from his New York real-estate business, the crazy birther stuff? "The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!" Enough small impressions eventually make a big mark.

No.
The MSM keep saying this, but it won't make it true.
YOU and DC created the radical distrust of traditional sources. Every time you suppressed a story that didn't fit the narrative (e.g. Jeffrey Epstein), every time you mercilesslay attacked someone prominent or off the street for perfectly normal words/thoughs (e.g. Palin) while raising up obviously weird/deviant/ugly people as normal (Hollywood). And so on.

The interesting point that you make about KSA is that Iran currently has far greater fresh water problems than the KSA does, and they are far harder to solve. KSA has the available energy to run massive desalination plants, even though that would be very expensive. Iran has created a huge internal crisis through 40 years of gross mismanagement.

233 I just asked an Irish colleague of mine about the pronunciation of Celtic.

He says that it is "Keltic" for the pronunciation regarding the people, place, language, culture, etc. - but there is a Scottish soccer team that pronounces it "Seltic" just like our basketball team does. He asserts that the "Seltic" pronunciation is also common, though it is wrong.

So it seems to be the exact same argument on the exact same terms, with the same exceptions, that we have Over Here.

Posted by: deplorable unperson - refuse to accept the Mask of the Beast at August 13, 2020 11:31 AM

I see the same here in my area of Michigan.

And anger is useless. What matters is how that anger is channeled into action.

Are the angry people going to do anything that matters? And no, driving to Lansing to scream out one's window at buildings is as useless as the Hillary voters who screamed at the sky after she lost.

Voting matters. Parents getting active in their children's schools matters. Citizens getting active in their local government matters.

Taking constructive action is what matters.

As of yet, I don't see any of that happening. Like you, I see people all over complying with the Whitmer mask-mandate and the 'social distancing' and the limit to group gatherings.

As the saying went in Batman, "It's not who I am underneath, it's what I do that defines me."

Same applies here. Doesn't matter if people are angry. What are they *doing* about it?

Other than that one barber here in Michigan and a few Sheriffs who stated they wouldn't enforce the mask-mandates, who else in Michigan is rebelling against anything?

That one woman who got out of her car and brandished a gun at the BLM woman and her daughter who were harassing her? She's now been officially charged, I think.

And that's how they send a message to everyone to conform or else. And so far, it's working. Everyone is conforming.

Cool. More, please. The notion of a gigantic "Middle East Peace Plan" that every president since the 60s has pursued is stupid on its face. Multilateralism is for the birds. If you can make a bilateral agreement, do so. Make enough of them, and you get the same results with a lot less headaches and let the early movers win an advantage. If the agreement was bad, fewer people are hurt by it. Bring back bilateral negotiation - in foreign affairs, peace and trade.

Portland doubled the size of its police department in the early 1990's. There had been a spate of gang killings, which culminated in a drive-by gang murder, at noon, in the middle of downtown Portland, as hundreds of office workers scrambled to get out of the way of the flying bullets.

The Portland elites decided that enough was enough, and that Portland needed to spend a lot more on policing. Good luck getting that sort of consensus today as crime spirals out of control in Portland.

Those of us who've been watching have been pointing out that there's been a de-facto military alliance between Saudi Arabia and Israel for at least 3 years now. The UAE are the KSA's junior partners in almost everything, so it's to be expected that they would follow Crown Prince Salman's lead here. (remember how the left used to put a lot of effort into demonizing him? There was a reason.)

Ironically, we can probably think Obama for all of this. His Mega-Deal with Iran scared both the Saudi's and the Israeli's so much that they realized they both needed to cut a deal with each other, since neither of them could be sure of US protection any more.

The best side benefit of all of this - Support for the Palestinians in the Arab world has dropped to zero. Nobody even tries to prop them up anymore (Now that Iran is broke, too) except the Euro-Trash, still hoping for that Final Solution they've never given up on.

Desalination of the Persian Gulf, which it's been doing for decades. The Strait is shallow, so recirculation from the Indian Ocean isn't occurring quickly enough. Not to mention that, as you allude to, the expense of doing so is prohibitive--it's not that they can't afford to financially, they simply don't have the energy heft to do so.
KSA freshwater aquifers are tapped (thanks, KSA, for trying to challenge the world to a "grow wheat in the desert" race in the 1970s).

Someone mentioned Kurt Schlicter's latest article about how the military might enable a coup against Trump. I'm not so quick to agree with the Colonel on this, having a bit of military experience myself. I think his premise is correct- generals are political creatures- but they always have been. But the word is out amongst the force- those company and field grade officers who enforce their orders- that the best and brightest are not GOs today. We don't have any Marshalls or Eisenhowers in the force. But we have a LOT of conservative and disinterested officers and NCOs who believe in America- that would be the Constitution. And they are the ones that will execute decisions.
I think the military will do what they always do- stand by, keep training, making training powerpoint slides, and sharpening their e-tools. That is the only way the Republic is preserved. Any action by them interfering in the process invalidates everything. And then all bets are off.

I was complaining on the book thread that although Thucydides gives a comprehensive account of the war I'm constantly confused on why some of the places sided with Athens and others with Sparta. I know how bad that statement sounds about cities dying, but it's hard when you're near a city like that. I lived the bulk of my life in Metro Detroit. For decades, Coleman Young was mayor. He was a criminal and hated the white man with a passion. He deliberately and proudly drove white businesses out of Detroit, and turned that once great city into a cesspool. In the meantime, it seems like the suburbs always had to support Detroit one way or another-- primarily financially--because that city had no tax base. After a while it got tiring and costly.

So when people say "I hope it fails" I think they're just frustrated with the decades of Democrat policies that hurt the decent people and enable criminals and welfare cheats. And then being forced to financially bail them out through things like taxes. Many of these big cities are money pits and the ones that are paying the bills get no benefit from them.

I'm with you, FenelonSpoke, on the "let them die" attitude.

I much prefer the nurse ratched attitude.

"I hate that these motherfuckers have destroyed MY CITY! I am NOT leaving. I will stay here and be a solution to rebuild this city."

But I guess most people prefer bumper sticker politics of "let it burn" without wanting to bother themselves with thinking of the consequences of that or coming up with actual solutions.

379 I get along with my relatives, even the very liberal ones. It's because we have the sense that everyone *Used* to have, years ago. We talk about the weather, or funny stories we heard, or children. We *Never* talk about politics or religion or anything like that. None of us need to say "I would talk politics with you, but then I'd have to kill you." It just goes without saying.

I'm older than Vic and I can remember it being conventional wisdom of my parents generation that you shouldn't discuss politics or religion in polite society. I guess most of my generation were too fucking stupid to learn that.

Also "children should be seen and not heard" went down the shitter a long time ago.

No, New York City won't change. Even money says that the next Mayor of New York City will be to the Left of DeBlasio. He is ethnically cleansing the city of the White middle and upper class. What will be left will be the true believer Leftists. Minorities, etc, that will clamor for "More!".

It is tragic, but you can't stop it. Giuliani barely beat Dinkins back in his first race. And the hate campaign by the Left never has stopped regarding Giuliani. Ed Koch personally went on a anti-Giuliani hate campaign for years. Wrote a book (hatchet job) about him called "Nasty Man". Real prince of a guy, that Koch.
There is no political ballast in the NYC electorate to vote in another Giuliani, and there is no political base for anyone like him to stand on.

At the end of "Atlas Shrugs", as Dagny, John Galt, etc are getting away, NYC goes dark. Prophetic, but that's the future of NYC.

But don't be asking me to buy you an umbrella to protect you from the hot molten ash that is coming your way.

393 Today's Wall Street Journal had an editorial by an upper West Side resident who described how it's descended into a dystopian mess, with homeless addicts being housed in what were boutique hotels, crime rampant and moving vans carrying people's households out in a steady stream. She laments what happened to her once wonderful neighborhood.

But.... she also tells how the residents were proudly progressive, and supported integrating a support structure for the less fortunate into neighborhoods.

I can't wait to see the responses in the letters to the editor. "Hey, stupid, you voted for this crap!! You brought this on yourself!!!! What are you complaining about? And when you move to some nice suburb in an area that's been Republican for decades, you better change your voting habits!!!!!"
With all the staunch progressives fleeing NYC for what are now greener pastures, I am thinking we do need border control INSIDE the US, with well run Republican states denying residence to Democrat voters. Any Dem fleeing NYC can move to Chicago, Seattle, Portland, Minneapolis, San Fran... the list is large.

If Trump wins,
The left has no where else to go. Communists are determined pieces of shit. Trigger:
Antifa takes over major blue cities, not symbolically but literally.
If Biden wins,
Trigger: Right wing death squads form (inevitable in banana republics), the attempt to suppress them goes badly.
