On Ethics

I suspect that I might not agree with this professor on much, but based upon what he's written here, we need more like him in colleges and universities.

What Teaching Ethics in Appalachia Taught Me About Bridging America’s Partisan Divide

Instead of concerning ourselves with ensuring safe spaces for students, we need to create more spaces in which constructive conflict can occur. Trust me, no one will get hurt. Even in a classroom with divergent points of view on hot-button political issues, no one at App said anything racist or bullying. In my entire career, I’ve never seen a classroom conversation degenerate into the kind of ad hominem attacks that are rampant on social media and cable news.

Military Stuff

Iran humiliated as they completely bungle symbolic sinking of fake US warship blocking entry to main naval port

So they set out to make simulated attacks on a dummy aircraft carrier and wound up sinking it in the main channel to their main harbor, and now ships can't get in and out. BWAHAHAHAHAHA!

Of course, we're not quite at the point of sinking our own ships in our own ports, but we're not without problems of our own.

What would Ernie King do if he were CNO today?

Some good suggestions there, which of course will never happen.

Poison Pen

Personal news: why I’m now leaving MSNBC

She quit because she recognizes that the MSM is toxic and corrupt. She gets props for that. She doesn't get props for other things, like thinking the news doesn't cover Biden enough (although maybe she should, if she's referring to the press hiding his cognitive decline. She doesn't say). Also, the cynic in me notes that this means she's leaving New York for Virginia, which is smart no matter who you are.

Speaking of New York...

Governor Cuomo begs wealthy New Yorkers to come home to save ailing city

Ace did a dandy post earlier about how DeBlasio is killing NYC. Having the state legislature argue “You have to come back so we can tax you more” is not really a message that resonates with many people.

Pretty Spot On

This was made 50 years ago.

Nature Is Beautiful

“Recently discovered”. I'm willing to bet that the Persians have known about them for a long, long time.

Short Of The Day

I'll admit it. I'm a big suck. I found this short to be quite touching. It's never stated, but I want to think this takes place in the WALL-E universe.

Business As Usual

Why Did Lebanon Let a Bomb-in-Waiting Sit in a Warehouse for 6 Years?

So they stored tons of ammonium nitrate next to a bunch of fireworks, and then sent someone in to do some welding. Never attribute to malice what can be explained by stupidity. Next thing you know they'll be sinking a ship in the main channel. I have some clients who are Lebanese. They're good people, Christians who left years ago to escape persecution. Fortunately nobody in their family was caught in the explosion. Here are some clips of people who were (not bloody). Just devastating.

Uno, Dos, Tres, KAPOW!

So these dolts just got ambushed TWICE in the same op.

First, of the reporter being set up to Karen his way into Trump's planned rejoinder, and second, of whining about the "hot mic" (come on, people... there's ALWAYS a hot mic if you're a politician. Only political buffoons like Obama ever think otherwise)... Trump gets to make it known that he set the whole thing up, and all it needed to work was for any of them to be the kind of predictable shitbird they always are.

63 That NYT article is crap (of course.)

The grain elevator did not hold 85% of all stored grain in the country. 85% comes though the port but it didn't all come in at once. It is only stored there for short time.

Most of the port will be operational pretty quickly. Meanwhile, there are other ways to import necessities.

My biggest problem though is that the author thinks that lebanon is the only corrupt and incompetent gov. in the world. Basically, they are all corrupt and incompetent and how much it affects people is only determined by how much power they have.

The article adds nothing to the conversation and is typical NYT - some idiot who used to work there and now thinks he is an expert on all things Lebanon so the get to write tut-tutting piece for nyt. Like so many liberal experts, they think they are the only people with a brain and they have all the answers - if only we would listen to them.

90 Why Did Lebanon Let a Bomb-in-Waiting Sit in a Warehouse for 6 Years?

An Israeli TV station has an interesting theory - that the ammonium nitrate at the port was a deniable strategic reserve for Hezbollah, to be used in the Third Israel-Hezbollah War. It would explain why nothing was done - if Hezbollah was blocking any attempts to dispose of the ammonium nitrate.

Nasrallah went on TV to claim that Hezbollah had never, ever, imported a single munition through the port ("not a single bullet"), and claimed that Hezbollah knows nothing about the port. That's real convincing.

Both Hezbollah and its toady, the president of Lebanon, are furiously resisting the idea of an international investigation into the causes of the blast.

I'll also note that the blast devastated the Christian and Sunni parts of Beirut - the Shia are in the southern suburbs, safely away from the blast. Might explain why Hezbollah wasn't too concerned about potential civilian casualties if the ammonium nitrate lit up.

I do not believe that.
Hezbollah missile storage, I guess that could count as fireworks, maybe.
If the freighter had been abandoned along with the cargo, I'd have thought some enterprising people would've auctioned it all just to cover the storage and docking fees that had accrued.

121 Vmom, when an agent sells a policy, every month when the customer pays their premium the agent gets a little slice of it. A couple of things:

1 This does not increase the premium for the customer. If no agent is involved, the insurance company keeps that portion. I also work for the customer, so it costs them literally nothing to have my 20+ years of experience On their side. My incentive is to find them the right policy so they stick with it and I keep getting my little slice, not to sell them an expensive policy.

2 It's a volume business, and over time you get a nice, steady income from the hundreds or thousands of policies that make up your "book" of business.

3 it's obviously hard to get started on just the little slice from your first few policies, so most insurance companies pay an advance of X months commissions when the policy issues - but if a policy cancels before month X they will take back the unearned part. This can make getting started as an agent something of a rocky proposition. There are various ways companies minimize this but that's beyond the scope of this answer.

4 you have to keep priming the pump with new policies, because in the second year Of the policy, the slice gets a lot smaller. Medicare sups are an exception to this rule.

Any other questions?

131 Before I get started, here's the ground report from battlefront Smallville, MidAmerica.

Went to two groceries this evening. Lots of shoppers (we usually go at slack times, not peak.) The Masked Cult was dominant, but uncritical. There were Healthy Faces. albeit a minority of us, in both stores.

I rounded a corner and there was a young lass with no mask, and I was so delighted, I smiled, and said, "hi" (while walking forward at arm's length, unthreateningly, like I learned to do back in Gotham). I thought she shied back like I was brandishing. Siiigh. Might've just been the sight of my ugly mug. But, that's the worst I've experienced so far. People sometimes come close and say excuse me and we laugh.

So, I noticed a fellow with a cap that said Navy Vet, and we got to talking, in line in the store, and outside where we were creating a cloud of exhalation surrounding the exit. Bwah-ha-ha.

Was seriously great to talk at length with the fellow. Said he told his beloved but Karenesque sister, he was shot at in Korea, he's not giving much of a fk about this flu.

He clearly knows all about the BS and the politics. (1 guess who he's voting for in Nov.) Wonderful, refreshing conversation, and after we, regretfully, parted company, I realized we hadn't even asked his name. I'm so lacking in social skills.

One impression: The Korean vet now looks like what I used to think of the WW2 vet. Nam getting there.

I got a laugh a few minutes ago -- Miley and I were coming back home and stopped at a gas station. As I was coming out, I heard this god-awful racket of some loud vehicle without a working muffler and not running right on top of it. And a cop SUV was right behind it, blue lights going.

This idiot was pulled over and pulled into this gas station, and drove right up next to the gas pumps, and then gets out of the vehicle. His car starts rolling when he gets out.

The car is some old beat up POS, a Toyota I think, front end bashed in with only one headlight working, rear end bashed in and no working muffler. And the engine isn't running right, and probably no working parking brake. Probably a manual transmission.

And the way he was acting, he was likely high as a kite on something.

As we pulled into our own driveway, I head a siren. It was another cop car, likely called for backup to deal with that idiot.

Taxes collected from employees are considered funds in trust which means there ia no corporate shield if you fook with them. They can go after the corporate officers personal assets. It can also be treated as a criminal act so I seriously doubt it.

188 and re the love of bats in deep blue Austin
https://tinyurl.com/y89s5vht
Posted by: Quint at August 07, 2020 10:51 PM (o1Bgo)

I had an interesting experience at the College Street Bridge there a few years ago, which is where the bats live in downtown Austin. I went down there to see them fly out, and they came out late that night, it was almost completely dark. (but that happens from time to time)

So I had a new digital camera, and I set the flash and started taking pictures with a real fast shutter speed to catch them as they were coming out. It worked great, since I had gotten myself right under their roost and I was close, great set of photos. There was something a little bit weird about those pictures, though.

Have you ever seen how those people on supernatural shows talk about "orbs" seen floating in some old places? Yeah, I don't believe in that, or that its some camera quirk or whatever. The weird thing about those photos from under the College Street Bridge is that when I looked at them, they were full of dozens of them. I figured maybe it was drops of water, or quirks of the light - but it was weird, in the sequenced photos, I could see some of them passing behind tree branches and coming out the other side. I have never been able to explain that.

So yeah, all that orb stuff, I don't believe in it. But somehow I've got about 50 or 60 pictures of them.

Posted by: Tom Servo at August 07, 2020 11:05 PM (V2Yro)

189 Well, my grilled steak was yummy, as were the instant mashed potatoes.

I took the starter out of the Panhard, thinking that the starter pinion might have been staying engaged in the flywheel ring gear, but such was not the case. Which is good. Since I had it out, I took the end cap off it to oil the bearing on the non-drive end, and found that a little friction brake was assembled wrong. Leastwise, it looked wrong, and a quick check of the workshop manual proved it. So I made it right, and put the starter back in. It works fine. But the little generator isn't generating.

Posted by: Sponge - China is Asshoe!

Your income just went up 6.2% for the second half of the year. For some higher wage earners it might bump you up a tax bracket but not likely for most. Federal withholding is caulated based on each payperiod so your withholdings should be adequate. When jug ears did this, it was at the beginning of the year. The withholding tables were bumped significantly such that people didn't necessarily have a significant increase in their take home pay. Uncle Sam didn't want his cashflow compromised . The increase in cash in your hand, for most came at refund time. About the time I figured how full of bullshit Barky was.

"We have no idea, now, of who or what the inhabitants of our future might be. In that sense, we have no future. Not in the sense that our grandparents had a future, or thought they did. Fully imagined cultural futures were the luxury of another day, one in which 'now' was of some greater duration. For us, of course, things can change so abruptly, so violently, so profoundly, that futures like our grandparents' have insufficient 'now' to stand on. We have no future because our present is too volatile. We have only risk management. The spinning of the given moment's scenarios. Pattern recognition"

This was demonstrated conclusively one time. Some security cameras were catching a lot of "rods" and some curious types there said let's put up some nets and see what we catch.

The camera footage showed "rods" flying into the nets. What was found inside the nets? Various flying bugs.

And these changes are small relative to larger effects. The length of the day varies by close to a millisecond over the course of the year due to large scale mass distribution effects of ocean currents at even atmospheric currents.

Which actually puts her *in front of* CA and PA, where the state just makes the blanket claim without even citing pathetic "data" to back it up.

Of course the buffoonish CDC also just asserts that 70 years of actual science (reiterated as recently as May, in research *they* sponsored) is wrong, and cites two absurd anecdotal bits of nonsense as their "evidence". But that's enough for Trump, apparently.

As Bill Clinton once said, it depends on the definition of the word is. Your taxable income would increase in theory as your take home pay would increase. I could not fill a thimble about what I know about taxes, other than we did just fine as a country before the income tax. The Stamp Act was not hot shakes though.

Depending on if he gave is to the employer or employee, it either makes is cheaper to hire someone or it give someone more take home pay. Either way, he called out the Dems. This whole thing will come down to whether people want a vibrant economy or if they want the government to hand out reparations. That is the choice but I don't have a real guess. The Left has taken over the school boards for a reason, they knew what they were doing.

Spectacular day, identical to the last ..... 50 or so? .... anyway, great day for biking over in Coronado.

Would never think of going near the place in August, sadly, but this year of course is different. Happy to see some tourists, but I think it was mostly locals out enjoying things.

Shocked at the number of people wearing masks. Maybe 30%?

This did not include the guys in BUDS class #343, who were running (no "social distancing") just outside the SEAL HQ (their class number is painted on the WWII style helmets they use).

Across the bay, the USS Bonhomme Richard looks just fine. But it isn't, of course.

My deceased older WWII USMC friend once asked the sentry when entering the base at Miramar, on August 7, what was special about the day. To his amazement and immense satisfaction, the young guy knew!

Posted by: Tom Servo at August 07, 2020 11:37 PM (V2Yro)

Gibson is an idiot. THIS IS WHY THERE WOULD BE NO FUTURE. The fact that everyone is playing safe and being risk averse means that everyone is playing defense and there is no advance. Risk management only protects what you have and guards the status quo. Status quo steals the future, and clustering on the current hit is a way to ensure grey goo failure.

Risk management takes a view of the world and tries to freeze on it to prevent risk and loss. When you do that, the world keeps moving and the only way to prevent it is to try to freeze the world. The Tokugawa Shogunate did this in banning all firearms. The Ming Dynasty China did this in destroying their navy and focusing on internal trade. Japan got lucky in that Commander Perry only sailed in and showed them what they failed to keep up with. China nearly got dismembered by the European powers. And Japan.

the world moves on, and the bastards who move with it will come and eat the lunch of the fools that try to live in the past, or even worse, the idiots who try to recreate their origin myth.

357 Anna, that's great! I saw Essex tied up at the carrier quay last week (?), well, in the last 2 weeks sometime. I noted that she had V-22s on the flight deck forward. Maybe those were removed?

Wish I could be there for the flyover.

Related: in Coronado, houses with a history, specifically a history of being the home of a naval aviator, are marked with plaques or signs. Very nice touch. Saw two today. Noticed they're now numbered - or maybe the new ones are. But I haven't looked up the system yet. I've seen older ones, with plaques, that have the names of the aviators.

Also came across an historical plaque I've never seen, located right across from downtown San Diego. Notes the area's history as the "birthplace of naval aviation". I believe Glenn Curtis did his seaplane demo for the Navy brass slightly south of there, in an area that is now filled-in land, but was the Spanish Bight, the tidal wet area between North Island and Coronado.

Any military buffs visiting San Diego should spend time in Coronado. Even if golfing, or on the beautiful beach, or cruising the beautiful neighborhoods, you'll have F-18s and H60s and C-2s overhead frequently (low, landing) or BUDS guys running in their helmets, carrying telephone poles down the beach just south of the Hotel Del, or doing teamwork small raft exercises off the fairway of the 3rd hole at the public course.

The fact it is falling on soils that are already significantly saturated would make this 5 inches more concerning than the earlier rainfall. It could also increase the likelihood of significant landslides on the reservoir banks which can contribute to increased water levels. I'm thinking things could get sporty for the chicoms.

362 Anna a friend's father was naval aviation, just missed WWII (he was aboard ..... hmmm ... Princeton?) en route to the western Pacific when VJ day happened.

His photo album has "Just too late" written below a photo of him in his Curtiss SB2C on the flight deck.

But the Bearcat in your linked story reminded me - he flew F-8s. And in the album, great pics of him ditching an F-8 (engine failure), alongside the carrier, per the procedure. He was an instructor at the time, observing or something for other pilots aloft, and for some reason couldn't get the carrier to acknowledge his advisory that he was going to have to ditch. They finally approved ditching alongside just as he hit the water, or shortly after, as he stepped out on the wing.

There were clippings from two nasal radiator publications about the incident in the album, along with photos (marked "Secret" on the back) of his perfect ditch landing.

I need to go there again. Its been too long. I went 10 years in a row and stopped when the hotels thought they were actually some 5 star in paradise. $200 a night 20 years ago was fucking insane. The place we started at was $60, then jumped to $90 the next year, and then $175 the year after. At that point they can suck the fart out of my ass. I mean $200 is cool if you got a tad more than 4 channels in TV and a rickety AC unit, but $200 a night 20 years ago would have gotten me a 5 star in mexico and blown in the mayan ruins every day by unknown hot chicks, and I wouldn't be looking at rusty doodoo farm implements sitting behind the motel. I will go again in the next year or so.

387 VF-19 with its F8F-1 Bearcats were at sea aboard USS Langley* when on 16 August that the war with Japan was over.

*Appropriate I think, a ship named after the US Navy's first carrier had the honor of being first to operate the Bearcat.

The second F8F squadron was VF-18 which had been aboard USS Intrepid[/i[ when the ship was hit by two kamikazes. VF-18 worked up with Grumman's new fighter and went to sea aboard the US Navy's oldest carrier, USS Ranger.

392 Thanks Anna. I believe he was in SB2Cs on the carrier when VJ Day ended his "war-time service" hopes (well, for that war - he stayed in and obviously flew in Korea, by Vietnam he was desk-bound).

The F8s were post-war for him.

I'm going to call my friend and make sure he's still got the album.

After his father died, his mom remarried (another naval aviator, surprise). Years ago at my friend's place in SF, I saw a refrigerator magnet on his fridge - "St Lo's Survivor's Association". His step-father had been in the air when the ship was hit, and landed on the beach at Samar or Leyte. My friend looked at me - "you actually know what this is about??".

395 Fuller review of Horizon Zero Dawn for Two Weeks:

It is a standard open world game for the criteria you mentioned, radiant quests and exploration.

Technically, it is a post apocalyptic game, but the apocalypse happened long ago in the game's history. It is different.

Combat is good on the PS4. Lot of options, upgrades and so forth.

The characters are well voice acted, for the most part.

Woke level: low. For the most part, the protagonist is likable, relatable and this extends to quite a few characters in the game- something a lot of games seem to have forgotten.

Story: the main story of the game is not where my problem lies, it is the back story told as the game unfolds. It's not woke, per se. More... odd. The main story of the game seems to be where they started with and they just worked backward, which may be where the oddity starts to creep in. The issues with the story to me do not disqualify the game.

It is pretty, fun, and rich in exploration.

417 I still wear the Army do rag I have from the 80s. There is another name for them and someone here told me but I keep forgetting. It is officially a military cravat triangular bandage. It is basically the thing Barnes wore in Platoon.

I have had that thing a long time and I am not going to give up on it now. I saw another guy wearing the same thing a while back and we winked I guess. I have some of those Chinese maxi pads but I am done with it. i only pull the thing up when surrounded by worriers or in a store in the city.

My guess is I got the thing in Feb but I have not checked for antibodes and I don't know if that is available. But if four months of this has not taken me down so far, what is going to change in the next few months?

426 I'm 62, and have been fully restoring the exterior of my house, in +95 degree Houston-ish heat and humidity.

About 90% of that work is on ladders, up to 24 ft. and in precarious postures as to address the various soffits, fascias and quasi-Victorian arches and other fiddleworks associated with the otherwise Crafstman style of architecture of this house's design.

Yeah, I'm out-working most of what could be delivered here by far too many of my younger bretheren.

But they can strive to redeem their honor, on the rifle or pistol range, and I will gladly meet them, there.

I'll out-carpenter them, out tile-work them, out paint them and out shoot them.

But I'll YEILD on the mechanical front to both AOP, and Berzerker.

I'm GOOD, but I am not GREAT.

438 I always enjoy reading these thought pieces by New Yawkers that go out into the hinterlands of the uncultured and come back with their newly found truisms.

They always swing and miss.

The good professor comes to the revelation that we should listen and consider each other's thoughts and then we can "heal the divide".

He proposes that the solution is that we surround ourselves with a diverse group and be confronted with ideas we disagree with that we might find common ground. That sounds great. A Rodney King world, where we all get along.

But here's the thing, there are fixed right and wrongs. I have no desire to find common ground with wrong.

A world in which ethics are pliable, is not to have ethics at all.

King Solomon's wisdom in proposing the cutting of the baby in half was dependent In its outcome on the notion that one of the women had ethics, the other did not. By putting them to the test, he ascertained which one had ethics.

We don't need to be "exposed to other ideas" and "understand that opposing positions are coming from well meaning people".

We need to understand that most abhorrent ideas are coming from self-serving, narcissistic people that sincerely believe in their own self-serving narcissism.

And when that is broken down, the truth should emerge as the ultimate conclusion. And that which is false should be rebuked.

Because here's the thing, your society should be at odds over unethical practices. The ultimate goal is not to "all get along" or even "have civil discourse". The ultimate goal is to enshrine the true and the right. When that is done, the rest sorts itself out.

Key to life- you're never to old to start something new. I started running when I was 20, skiing when I was 30, golfing when I was 40, started a three-year 60-hike project at 55 and now am looking for something new for my 60s.

Long time runner, can't, knees. Too much running on steel decks in the Navy.

Can't sword fight anymore, blew out my elbow tendon 3 times (thing Major League Pitcher, and 1 Billion fast balls).

Most places are closed, can't even go get my paddleboard out, nor find someone to enjoy it with.

Gyms closed.

I do work out in the Yard, situps, pushups, knee bends, and swim in my pool, but really, it just not enough.

How do you start something new, when everything is CLOSED?

One of countless examples.

It's incrementalism for long periods of time in which society cedes bits and bits and bits of truth in favor of placation.

Then invariably follows a landmark shift which becomes the new cornerstone, which then opens new attacks on that center only in big chunks, rather than bits.

Anyone that has watched a sandcastle knocked down by the tide understands exactly how it works.

Or is my earlier vote final?
I honestly don't know.

trust me my man I understand. They told me I would be blessed. I am not asking for plaudits or anything from anyone. I was a caregiver too and neither of my parents made 80. Everyone has their difficulties. Mine are over in that regard. I do wish you well and hope you do get some relief.

you seriously should look into help from the county or other organizations. There are groups for caregivers that can offer help. If I could go back, I would have used those resources. People are finally understanding what caregivers go through. MLIA is another one around here, she might have some ideas too.

Posted by: Romeo13 at August 08, 2020 02:33 AM

I know. That is tough. I live in a city with a lot of greenways and hiking trails, so I have been concentrating on getting my exercise that way. I usually stay on a trail for 1 1/4- 2 hours. I have to admit that I haven't been going as often as I should and, as a result, I've put on about 10 pounds. I did go today. I walk mostly but just to keep my heart rate a little higher, if I'm on a paved trail, I walk 4 minutes, jog 1 minute for a couple of cycles, then do 3 and 1, etc. Don't know if your knees can take it, but it does help me with getting my endorphins pumped up a bit.

I have also been reading a lot more and keeping up with my balcony garden, so you don't need to necessarily choose a physical pursuit. Just being outside keeps my mind a lot clearer. Get that Vitamin D!

468 University of Georgia is advising students that they should jack off instead banging whores to control the spread of coronavirus.

Also, wear a mask while banging whores and try not to kiss them. Also bang them from behind so you aren't face to face. Also don't blow a load in their ass, because sometimes the virus is in semen and might transmit anally.

Also, when you are done, wash your hands.

No guidance on whether you should leave a twenty on the nightstand, but I imagine not, as the virus spreads by handling money.

You can't get a bike fixed or maintained now without a one to two week wait, that's if the shop is even open, and some exhorbitent prices. Junk bikes are being dragged out of garages for repair. These SOBs all have cars they can use. My bike is a daily beater and my transportation mobility device. Walking not so much fun anymore, snapped achilles tendon, torn knee, spine fractures and bulging disks after being hit by a pickup truck on another bicycle after age 60.

Nah, I disagree. I don't work from home, I live at home and I still make coffee (50/50 regular/decaf because of medical issues). I make 2 or 3 cups of hot in the winter and keep a pitcher in the fridge for the hot weather, having two or three glasses a day.
