I learned today of a site called Cameo. You can hire a (admittedly not super-hot) celeb to send a greeting and message to whomever you like. Human trafficking, and child porn, frankly continue because the governing class want them to.
We could stop illegal immigration, immediately, if we wanted to. Hell we stopped it with a relatively minor effort in the 50s and 50s era technology. But that would mean getting rid of a significant portion of the left's voters. Posted by: JoeF. at August 06, 2020 10:13 PM (dR6lV) ..... I believe he is sporting the Gadsden flag. It's a play on the disingenuous calls by leftists for 2Aers and militia men to intervene with the government rounding up AntiFa members in the pacific NW. The line goes, you have your guns allegedly to fight the government when it becomes tyrannical, but where are you now. Obviously, 2Aers recognize who the tyrannical party is, those that seek to destroy the country, seize privately held wealth, burn down businesses and deny free speech, which is to say liberals. Though in fairness, they could have also drawn a Lincoln Project writer into the toon as well. Posted by: Bitter Clinger at August 06, 2020 10:19 PM (u8nBg) 131

In my opinion, virtually all new movies suck.
I just watched the Vast of Night however, it's on Prime now and filmed by a first time director. 2020 release, and 92% on the Tomatometer. *Very* solid, low budget, clean, creepy movie, '50s style (deliberately) but far better. It's free, and I'll wager you won't be disappointed. Just my two cents. Posted by: Blacksheep at August 06, 2020 10:42 PM (6mvRv) Posted by: NaCly Dog at August 06, 2020 10:42 PM (u82oZ) 225

Decades ago, I lived next door to a dadless kid.
Going out to meet some friends, I noticed him with a tire iron staring at the back of his car. "What's up, Ed?" "Got a flat tire. Don't know how to change it" "Sucks to be you" - Nah, I'm just kidding. Fifteen minutes later, his car was sitting smartly on its spare, and I reminded him that if my car is in the driveway, that means he's welcome to call on me for anything he might need. Frabjous joy! The poor wretched Panhard lives! Took it for a drive today. Twice. First trip, I discovered one major and one minor oil leak. Too warm to work on it.
Went tot town, took trash to the dump, and went to NAPA and got a jug of oil and a compression union for the plastic oil pressure gauge line. That was the minor oil leak. Fixed. Major leak was even easier. Bolt for the banjo fitting on the block that supplies oil to the left side cylinder head was not tight, so it leaked oil under pressure at an alarming rate. But I got a socket wrench on it, and a quarter-turn of the ratchet handle, and it's all good. Took another drive, no leaks. But it sounds like the starter is staying meshed with the flywheel. That's got to be fixed, pronto. And the speedometer doesn't work, although it tried once or twice. I think I need to shorten up the cable jacket, so that the core cable engages fully with the square sockets at both ends. But the rebuilt clutch works just fine. Posted by: Blonde Morticia at August 06, 2020 11:52 PM (G51Gf) I'd sure feel better if I thought Barr was kicking ass and taking names within the DOJ and FBI and demanding people be fired or reassigned, and I truly hope I am wrong, but I think we are being played. They framed Flynn and had bogus/fabricated charges levied against him in weeks, yet all "our" guys still seem to be running in circles. Anyone think Nixon resigning after winning 49 states was a bigger disaster than has ever been acknowledged?
No. His domestic policies were pure administrative state crap. Wage and price controls were probably the worst of them. It's hard to imagine nowadays how far left even Republicans were back then. Many probably still are, but thanks to Reagan's success they have to hide it. Some are showing it now, but they're at least getting pushback. Imagine if that level of government response to a crisis were still universally accepted. We would probably not have made it to the turn of the century. Blonde M., there's a dichotomy in the WH/GOP stance that is a mix of both excellent, and stupid. Excellent part: standing firm against bailouts of insolvent/mismanaged/corrupt provinces like NY, CA, IL, etc. Stupid part: the C19-linked aid (including to hospitals, BTW) that was excusable (for a month) at the start, but obviously became a gigantic perverse incentive pretty quickly.
But the problem is much more basic: the C19 task force is technically and scientifically incompetent (putting it mildly), there's obviously never been even a hint of a Team B (actual epidemiology and common sense), and Trump has never and will never either understand or admit that almost everything since early May has been a mistake, since the IFR of this bug is nothing special, equal to a bad flu season. *Every* policy and action, federal and state, that is based on the false premise that C19 is anything more than a bad flu season (with a much, much narrower morbidity pattern than flu) is indefensible. AND - I have $10 that says there will be ZERO accountability at CDC or the WH or anywhere else for this enormous, infamous, catastrophic incompetence in basic public health management. (actually a few dozen public health officials around the country have been fired, or resigned - but this debacle calls for a holocaust in almost all incumbent public health cadres - and there are elements at CDC and elsewhere, below "leadership" level, who agree, and are ape-shit furious about it all) Posted by: rhomboid at August 07, 2020 02:07 AM (OTzUX) 791

They're pretty out in the open about it. I've never been convinced that replacing civics with "social" "studies" was not a suicidal move.
Posted by: Gilded Age II at August 07, 2020 01:58 AM Well, they'd started the "social studies" horsesh!t by the time I got to middle school. (Hated it even then, btw.) "American History" had morphed into various forms of anti-American propaganda. Barely any mention of our Founding Fathers -or- Documents. "Government"-- which was probably the former 5th-grade "civics"-- was delayed until junior year of HS! I had to re-learn everything, on my own. Shut down the gd public schools. They're worthless! I have some news for both of them, private property rights ended a long time ago, it began with the EPA, then the so-called navigable waters act, and finally ended totally with the SCOTUS ruling in the infamous Kelo case which said the gov could take your property for a "public purpose" rather than the actual constitution which says "public use". Public purpose means anything the gov wants. Kelo was the worst SCOTUS ruling in its history of bad rulings.

I bought a paintball gun for shooting tree rats. Little bastards are being a little to naughty around here. Just a cheapy spring type to see if they like getting plinked with it. I would do something with a little more oomph, but that would require CO2 (OMG) or compressed air, and my experiences with pellet guns the CO2 (OMG) slowly leaks out and needs to be replaced after a week or two.

Mornin', all! We may make 1000 comments again!
An easy workout and small breakfast (well, sort of) this am. A nice run for the car today: I have to go up to my campus's mailroom to collect some mail, then to my office to distribute it, and Linda needs to water the mystery plant in the breakroom. Oh, and it's time to gas up the Buick again. Whee. Tomorrow marks one year since I bought the Buick, and it has been unquestionably great. At 45K miles now, it has required only 2 oil changes/tire rotations, some filters, and my regular cleaning/detailing. Buick no longer makes sedans, so if I wanted to replace it and couldn't find a '17-'19 model, I'd have to go Japanese or German. The US car companies are slowly slicing their own veins open. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at August 07, 2020 06:57 AM Business decision. At least at the US car company at which I work. Foreign auto companies dominate the market for sedans and do them well. And my company has not been making them well for years now. So they made the decision a few years back to just take us out of the sedan market and focus on our bread-n-butter sellers (trucks, SUVs, mini-vans, etc.) It makes sense for my company, as it was just wasted investment and resources on vehicles which were not going to sell. So better to take that investment and cost and put it into known sellers and maintain them best-in-industry vehicles. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at August 07, 2020 07:19 AM (Do5/p) 959
