UNT's Journal of Schenkerian Studies is under investigation following calls from around the country for it to be shuttered and for one of its advisers, UNT music theory professor Timothy Jackson, to be fired. The journal's sin? Following criticism by scholar Philip Ewell that 19th century music theorist Heinrich Schenker, whose influence on music theory is "hard to overstate," was an "ardent racist and German nationalist," the journal presented an edition including debate among scholars on racial issues and music theory. . . The graduate students claimed that Jackson had used the journal "to promote racism" by defending the music theorist after Ewell wrote that Schenker's "racist views infected his music theoretical arguments." Jackson's article, one of several defending the composer in the 2019 edition of the journal, contextualized Schenker and his changing views on race, which were partially due to the rise of Nazi Germany. (Schenker was Jewish; his wife was arrested by the Nazi regime and died in Theresienstadt concentration camp.)You can now cancel a college professor for suggesting that music theory (based on writings of a Jewish guy whose wife died in a Nazi concentration camp) is not as white supremacist as another college professor claims? How did we get to this point? Of course, "cancel culture" has been going on against conservatives for a long time, but it's kind of a new thing to see liberals and leftists suddenly becoming targets. Critical Social Justice Helen Pluckrose is one of the liberals involved in the series of hoax studies which was intended to reveal the corruption of the field of "grievance studies". Late last month, she did an interview for Spiked in which she discussed the dangerous explosion of critical social justice. She did a brief synopsis of how this ideology developed:
These ideas arose in the late 1960s, when people from different disciplines suddenly started saying they were sceptical of meta-narratives, that knowledge was a social construct, and that language could not convey meaning reliably. There was a critical attitude towards everything we thought we knew. This was a really aimless development, because if you do not believe language can meaningfully convey anything, you cannot really use language to change anything. As a result, this movement burnt itself out by the middle of the 1980s. But around 1989 there was another flood of new writing, in which people . . . all started saying postmodernism had some useful tools, but was not very good for activism. There had to be some kind of objective truth, if we were going to say certain people in a certain place are disadvantaged. They all wanted to use the idea of social constructivism, but also identified power structures that they felt were objectively real. That was a dramatic change. Then came intersectionality, queer theory, critical-race theory and later disability studies and fat studies. . . . . . We have gone from a scepticism towards meta-narratives to a social justice meta-narrative. And that has been escalating, particularly in the last five years, and especially this year.
spiked: What are the most revealing examples of this trend? Pluckrose: One key example is cancel culture. We have had all these different marginalised identities for a little while. But in the last year or so, things have been refining, and now we are really looking at two key identities. Activists are not so worried about women as a sex anymore. This is evident from all the Karen memes. Similarly, activists feel gay men are not consistently being intersectional, and have lost some of their interest in the gay identity cause. What we have ended up with is race and transgender.Ed Driscoll picked up a sensible point from The Dispatch this morning. It focuses on the Washington Post's decision to capitalize both White and Black as "distinct cultural and ethnic groups". Totally binary.
At some point in the future people will look back at how the left made two contradictory arguments at the same time. When it comes to sexual identity, the word has gone forth to oppose "artificial" categories, "false binaries," etc. People can define themselves sexually without any regard to medical science, never mind tradition or political or cultural orthodoxy. I've lost count of how many genders there are now. Meanwhile, when it comes to race, it's all about new artificial categories and enforced binaries. White people who pretend they're black are committing theft. Heck, white people who cook non-white food or pay homage to non-white art forms are committing theft. Cultural appropriation is evil. But gender appropriation is something to be celebrated. Biological males can collect all the women's track and field awards and that's fine. But don't you dare wear dreadlocks if you're not black? . .A little good news on the transgender front? There may be some signs of actual thought about this issue coming from the UK, reported in Quillette. It's about time:

This has unfolded during the same period when the Tavistock and Portman NHS Foundation, which provides mental-health services to children, is facing a lawsuit from a former patient who says she was rushed into an aggressive, and ultimately destructive, program of hormone therapy. A former psychiatric nurse at Tavistock is making related legal claims, alleging the provision of drugs to children as young as nine. Numerous clinicians have resigned in protest at such policies. But there is much more. Changes have been occurring on several fronts. Take a look.

Things like this are what seem to me to be undeniable proof of demonic activity in the world today. The widespread insistence that words no longer mean what they say, that obvious reality is malleable while ill-defined ideas are concrete, etc. just serve to prove that something out there really, really hates objective truth.

But when people start leaving those states to go to better states, but bring their Democrat voting habits with them, that's not good. Just spreads the progressive virus throughout the country instead of keeping it isolated to the coasts. Think of California liberals moving to Arizona and turning AZ Blue.
So yeah, we better hope that places like NYC and Seattle and Portland get their shit together, otherwise we're facing a spread of progressive voters from those areas to the rest of the country.

The older I get, the more I realize these battles taking place in "the culture" are not my battles. I'm not part of a swarm, pushing this way or that, for or against this or that.
Part of it is I don't care anymore. Part of it is the focus that comes from saying "ok, in spite of all that, what is my mission? What tasks are mine?"

It's good to see young people there no, so not every millennial supports Biden or socialism. Anyway, there was some Mennonite woman and her family selling Trump shirts and hats and flags. She had one with an LGBT sign and that stood for "Liberty, Guns, Booze and Trump" with little symbols underneath it. I wouldn't buy that, and I didn't have much anyway, so I bought a little bumper sticker-Pray for 45 (since he's the 45th President) My car is so beat up it wouldn't look much worse if it got keyed.
Some other woman had a shirt which said on the front "Another deplorable for Trump" and on the back -in a reference to Jaws "Looks like we'll need a bigger basket."
I laughed and she and I had a nice conversation.. FenSpouse said "Why don't we buy the flag with Trump as Rambo?" He was kidding. My response-You'd have to live in some very rural area where you had a half a mile driveway to put that up, and probably the LGBT one.

Harry Potter is a leftwing academic fantasy of getting into Harvard or
Oxford and then going into government or some sort of non-profit. It's
about being naturally part of an elite, separate tribe with their own
language, culture, economy, etc.
I can't tell you if stuff like Harry Potter made the millennials the screwed up mess they are, or if it's simply an expression of how screwed up they are. But I'm sure the two are most definitely intertwined.
Quite honestly - I think we're all worked up over nothing in a way - because this nation will not survive that generation being in charge. We're just bitching about prolonging the inevitable.

That's what its been turned into, yeah in the minds of many on the left and especially zoomers. I think it's just the struggle of adolescence. I don't know many middle and high schoolers who are thrilled with their bodies/appearance and many are constantly battling with self-doubt. If any culture demands it, it's the media culture.

The honest answer is: Informed consent.
If you are working with someone, they ought to be able to lay out up front, exactly what they're doing, what the purpose is, and what is the outcome they are seeking.
It should all be above board, and there should be a lot of "checking in" to see how whatever it is they are doing is working for you.
If it seems like what they are doing goes against what you want, then that ought to be clear, and they BETTER have a good, justifiable reason for doing it... with an ultimate outcome they are seeking being for YOUR long term benefit, even if you can't see it.
And... if the person seems to be really really trying to get you to like them, run. Run away. Because you are paying for THEIR therapy, not yours.

Now history departments are chock full of people who, rather than focus on particular countries or regional history (or the histories of particular areas thereof), there is a push to go into "gender studies", "Women's studies", "(insert race name here) studies", and so forth.
And if you want to run into some particularly nasty Leftists, go into "labor history".

Yeah, those church secretaries; I mostly give them a wide berth.
(Actually, I've only ever had two "official" church secretaries since I've been ordained. Mostly my husband has done the bulletin because he is more computer literate than I am and types better and more quickly than I do. If I don't trust FenSpouse I'm in big trouble)

Most kids sign consents for their parents to be informed of their treatment. Few parents get particularly involved, opting to let their kids tell them what they "need to know". This is a mistake.

The adolescent age range is, medically speaking, probably the healthiest phase of life. Congenital issues have largely declared themselves by pre-school years while degenerative disorders have not yet set in. At the same time, physicians who go into Adolescent Medicine usually train as Pediatricians and then branch off into Adolescent Medicine. I think that many of them bring a mindset of their patient as 'the innocent child', a protective mindset. Rather than being a guide or mentor to help the child grow into a functioning productive adult, they become (in their mind) a shield protecting the eternal child from consequences of their (the child's) decisions.
Just as the old saying goes, that most psychologists enter the field seeking a diagnosis or treatment, I suspect many Adolescent Medicine docs may have unresolved adolescent issues of their own and run the risk of projecting their own psyche onto the teen.
Another factor is that a large portion of the "Science" in the field of Adolescent Medicine is based solely on self-reported questionnaires, which are fraught with internal bias and distortions. Ask a teenager to report honestly on drug use and what sort of responses would you expect to get?

When I was growing up, going to the next grade was just a natural progression. No big deal. Although it might have been something else for the slow class. Every grade, from 5th on up, had a normal class and then a slow class.

Or both.
In large part, the "treatment" is more abuse, and it does a GREAT job of teaching kids to use drugs to solve their problems.
So yeah, all that unresolved childhood trauma... both the patient and the treatment provider, does not get addressed.

They were locking down variables, almost like it was expressly created as a behavioral experiment/catalog (or very quickly "evolved" there). It creeped me out from the start because I could see it, but I could also see that it was incredibly well camouflaged. It wouldn't have affected me so much if they had not also designed it to look so innocent and unassuming.

I started on an adolescent unit (and got the hell out at the first opportunity), but in a hospital setting you can talk to the kid during any waking hour. Family meetings were a separate session and both partes were met with in advance.
Startlingly, most kids did not object to the parents knowing what was going on. Many were just afraid to do it alone. And there were some parents who just did not give a shit or who were as disappointed as the kid was that she was not better looking, more popular, not going to more parties (even when those parties involved drugs or alcohol). I had one parent who refused to pick up her son (grieving the loss of his dad to cancer) because she wanted to attend a quilt conference in another state.

One of the major problems with mental health care is an insanely narrow focus on the person being "treated."
Nobody gets sick in a vacuum, and nobody gets well in one. So ANY time someone is hospitalized, generally their recovery only starts once they're discharged.
In other words, medication management is only the start of the process. Whatever gets done in the hospital... it might or might NOT work in the real world, and there's a good chance it won't, because a huge part of the problem with the individual is that world.

Familial: Parents who are so wrapped up in themselves that they don't see the kid anymore.

Stepson had a child with his high school girlfriend. She stayed at the house with his parents while she was pregnant and afterwards. She started cheating with one of his friends, who she married and has a couple of kids with. He was still dealing with his mom's death and the girlfriend wouldn't let any of us see the boy. So he gave up.
This time, when the relationship fell apart, he managed to make arrangements with the mom. She's not as vindictive and realizes it's good for the boy to be with his dad. Stepson rented a place down the road and he sees his son every Wednesday and other times. He's stuck in that town but it's worth it to be with his son.

Looks like college football is going dark next week - the Power 5 will supposedly follow the MAC in cancelling Fall sports. Biggest issue is liability for unknown long term complications of the disease. If this thing turns out to be more than than flu because of long term effects, when do we make China actually pay for all this

My husband's nephew had a successful marriage, with his, hers and their kids. The marriage fell apart. He met a woman with a couple of kids. Her husband was in jail. The older son does drugs and is in and out of jail. But her daughter is a young teen. I think he may have saved her. She has a stable family and lives a normal life, doing things like riding horses. We'll have to see if it's enough as she moves to adulthood.
