LOL: Twitter Could Face $250 Million Fine For Using Users' Private Phone Numbers to Better Target Ads

Oh, so that's why they started demanding you give them your phone number.

Not for security, as they lied.

No, so they'd know which ads to hit you with.

witter disclosed in a regulatory filing that it could face a fine of up to $250 million from US authorities over its use of phone numbers and email addresses to target advertisements.

The company received a complaint from the Federal Trade Commission on July 28 alleging it had used data "provided for safety and security purposes for targeted advertising during periods between 2013 and 2019," it said in the filing. Twitter estimates the complaint could result in a loss of between $150 million and $250 million, it said.

The social media company admitted last October that it had "inadvertently" targeted ads at users through contact details that they provided for security purposes.

Former president and current racial demagogue Barack Obama inadvertently came in Reggie Love's mouth.

Twitter (TWTR) users are asked to provide information like their phone number to help secure their account through services such as two-factor authentication.

51 All sorts of tech firms of social media platforms are now REQUIRING this bogus "two-factor authentication" scheme whereby you MUST give them your phone number to continue using the service/product/platform.

I suspected from the very beginning that it was all just a data-harvesting scheme. And I was right.

I actually keep a "burner phone" with non-expiring minutes on it (and no monthly plan) for just this purpose -- the only time I ever turn it on is to receive the "code" they text you to confirm the existence of the phone number you just supplied them.

ANd guess what? Whenever I do turn it on there are usually dozens of spam-call messages, from all the previous times I used the number "just for security purposes." I just delete them, turn it off, put it back in the drawer for next time.

Twitter, Google, etc. -- ALL these companies are lying. They want your data. They want your identity.

So much so that it's almost a joke at this point.

"Hey you know that thing when you arrived earlier when I had five guys bend you over and do a full prostate search for" drugs"? And we did it a bunch of times? It wasn't actually drugs. We were doing ad targeting.

And all is semi-forgiven with a wink and a nod and a silent promise that we will let it happen again.

119 I try to avoid giving my phone number as much as possible. Our HR site changed the rules to require a cell phone number and then tried sending verification texts to a landline that was already in the system. There are a lot of businesses that don't have business cell phones to receive "verification" texts. On top of that, the system never sent "verification emails" that were the alternative. Had to get support to help out with that shit.

If it necessary, I try to use the landline as an account phone number. It's becoming more difficult to do so, since now everyone wants to send verification texts.

167 You all with the phones? You haven't adapted yet to the new phone protocols.

1. Never give out a phone number that you answer. Use one that goes straight to voicemail and with caller id. A good and cheap product would be MagicJack. They send you an email with the phone number of who called and they send you a mp3 of any message left. So you can see who's calling and listen to the message if you wish. Most robo calls hang up when they sense that it's recording. No interruptions by a phone ringing. The people who count have your other digits.

2. Have a cheap cell for text and non emergency messages from people you want to get their phone calls. Even then the robo's are getting thru. Which is why I have people text me that they're calling if the want a conversation. Otherwise they can text what they want.
3. A phone that you use to call out on. You don't give this number to anybody except extra special people and even then think about it first.

I've got it so I never hear a phone ringing or have to answer on if I do unless I want to. And everyone who deals with me at least doesn't feel snubbed or ignored. Except asshoe robo callers and other assorted nimrods who I don't want to hear anyway.

She is a member of Sister Alice's radio church. (The character is clearly based on Aimee Semple MacPherson.) Sister Alice is basically a good, sincere person. Perhaps a tad crazy. In the midst of an epileptic seizure (and in front of a live and radio audience), she believes God told her that she must resurrect the child murder victim on Easter. Mother/defendant places all of her faith in Sister Alice raising her son/murder victim such that there is no murder and she gets her baby back. Easter comes in the midst of trial so they all go out to the cemetery . . .

339 Why are we surprised a year labeled twice with 20 when the century labeled as such has been such a f**king prize before it even started.

Remember the panic over Y2K?

Then the next year the TWIN Towers?

Then the housing bubble blew out.

And the first anti-american, communist was elected as President. TWICE!!!
I'm seeing a pattern here with 2's.

Then with surprise and glee on our faces an actual business man gets elected and starts turning the country around so of course he immediately gets attacked and lied about for 4 years. (that's 2 X 2 in case you aren't keeping track)

And now the double digit diggerydoo of a year blows up in our faces with heretofore not seen nonsense and f**kwittery along with panic and hysteria over a virus which as everyone knows, cannot be filtered except very expensively. Mostly cannot be treated preventively because they mutate so quickly and the ONLY way to fight them is to be exposed and let the body learn to deal with it.

But NO we'll do every thing we can to keep exposure low so that as people ARE exposed they will come down with what will be there first exposure and thus having NO defenses ready for it.

Just f**king genius I tells yah.

I figure that just about the time we get everything resolved and back on an even keel more or less, THEN is when the SMOD will strike.

ZeroHedge has a bunch of videos of the Beirut boom shot from various places.

There was a fire at something near a port, and you can see little explosions, looking like fireworks going off all the time at the base.

Then a big boom, with a visible "Wilson cloud" (water condensation due to the trailing edge of the shock wave) and then a mushroom cloud.

Note, any large enough explosion produces a mushroom cloud.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at August 04, 2020 02:25 PM (rCwaK)

346 Imagine if this explosion is the first 1/10 kiloton suitcase nuke going off.

And in a few hours some previously unknown terrorist group announces that it has 49 more of these and their agents are in various cities in the world awaiting orders.

Don't laugh. It's 2020.

It is, however, a strong oxidizer which can be used in explosives, fireworks, and gunpowder as an alternative to the more common potassium nitrate.

Pretty much anything with a nitrate group has some bang potential if used properly.

Thankfully not. A nuclear explosion has a very bright pulse of light, gamma and neutrons. Hotter than the surface of the sun for a few brief moments, no matter how small the explosion is.

FYI A small nuke will potentially have a radiation pulse that is lethal at a greater radius/ distance than the blast damage will be.

426 EMP would have fried the chinese nokoff phones. What I read years ago about EMP. Who knows...

Posted by: klaftern
our DoD doesn't even attempt to afford lightning protection on our interceptors, which would co-incidentally, protect them from EMP. knock-off chinee cell phones aren't even wink wink nod nod protected, much less hardened. Take a stroll through any annual DoD budget for any Army missile program over the last 10 years and you'll see that with your own lying eyes instead of listening to me.

428 I guess they were quite angry when the record company titled their greatest hits album "We Sold Our Soul for Rock and Roll".

Because they, like, didn't, and would never have, and thought it was a horrible message to send.

I know it'll come as a shock to many that the record company screwed over the artists, but trust me, it does happen.'

430 I think Sabbath and other metal bands played around with the Satanic imagery. I doubt any of them were actual Devil worshippers

Read the lyrics for "After Forever" on Master of Reality. Should answer that question fairly quickly as far as Black Sabbath is concerned.

Me too. Been there, done that. BBoy^2 had a peduncle lesion on the top of his widdle head removed at 3 days old. When he got back from surgery, the bandage made him look like he had a little white skull cap on.

Anyway, prayers up for you all.

Right. I prefer my tits and wine to without the complimentary "getting torn to bits" service.

443 Things like this are always bullshit, in the sense that Company A violates Company B, so Company C makes money off it.

If the federal government deems a company broke the law, and issues a fine, that money sould either go to those who were hurt or directly to tax repayments, even if its $1 to each citizen (not to mention the joke of fining then $250 Mil over a scheme that netted then in the billions) Thr citizens shouldn't have to go through a drawn out class action suit.
