Hi CBD,

Can't argue with that. That's why I thought he could do those posters for wine or bicycles from 1890-ish. Part of my irritation comes from art critics who think these images are so much better than Rembrandt or the Pre-Raphaelites. Art without an emotional connection in some way is just sterile doodling.

I fear that last statement will not help my future career as an artsy-fartsy critic. :-)

Never heard it. I just know my dad used to say that all the time when I was a yoot.

Once upon a time a group of explorers went deep into the jungle. They had been warned by natives that if any birds defecated on them to not wash it off, especially the giant Foo. As they moved deeper into the jungle they heard a raucous noise and a giant bird, huge and almost resembling a dinosaur flew over and let loose with a voluminous crap. One of the party was saturated with foul smelling sticky poo and he rushed to a near-by stream to wash it off. When he stood up, he immediately collapsed and died. They buried him and continued on into the jungle. The next day, the giant Foo appeared again, and once again a member of the team was inundated in crap. He grabbed leaves and wiped it off. He too, immediately died. This continued until only one guy was left. He turned around and made it back to base. The moral? If the Foo shits, wear it.

They say there's no way I could have a complete exemption, that it isn;t a reasonable accommodation. They suggest face shield and/or plexiglas in my office, or flexible hours or remote, stuff like that.

Face shield in this heat? Hell no. And I dodged the plexiglas nonsense around my desk already; I don't want to reopen that can of wasps.

In any case I would have to get in touch with my doctor to have him document this, and that probably means a trip to his office with the stupid muzzle on. I should do that anyway. But maybe my boss, who is cool, and I can work out something where I don't have to leave my office very much at all.

Of course it will be. It always is. I will call it right now: trump or one of his associates did something completely legal, but they found a way to make it sound corrupt and illegal. It will be some nuanced business thing like depreciation that the average voter doesn't understand, so they can spin it however they want, and trump will be left trying to explain a complex business law thing, and it will only make him look like he is lying and covering up.

206 from the morning report re: atomic bomb
A company called Dollinger Steel in Beaumont, TX cast one of the shells. I was told but don't remember if it was Fat Boy or Little Boy. That was a family owned business that started in Birmingham or Mobile, Alabama probably 100 ago that moved to Louisiana and finally to Beaumont. They moved to remain in a right to work state as the family did not want their workers to be unionized.

The brothers that were running the business fell on hard times around 2008 and one of them suffered from cancer. They wanted to sell but a Phase II environmental report lead to groundwater sampling and requirements to clean up for lead paint contamination and oil stains near a wash basin that was inside one of the huge warehouses.

Between some blood sucking consultants and the TCEQ, the entire wealth of the family was bled out trying to get clearance from these very minor problems. The Dollinger brother that hadn't worked in the business was an accountant in town and told me the dilemma he faced. It was a sad story from top bottom.

Touring the place and looking at all the pictures that were still on the office walls showed me what happened to American industry in the last few decades.

bth- You've made your position on masks known for some time, but let me ask you something.

At what point does the belief that wearing a mask may confer a marginal or incremental decrease in the overall risk profile (a benefit of unknowable size) become a moral imperative that justifies a one-size-fits-all sweeping government mandate for adult autonomous citizens to comply with a vaguely worded, inconsistently applied and arbitrarily enforced order under the cover of a fig leaf of a "public health emergency" that is now in its fifth calendar month?

(I'll set aside for the moment the fact that "supportive evidence of" is not the same as "compelling proof of" in the scientific realm and beyond a reasonable doubt leaves room for reasonable people to have a different interpretation of evidence.)

239 I think that it is absolutely classic that the WSJ suddenly believes that in the dying throes of a virus that is burning itself out just like every other virus in history, poorly worn snot-sponges are somehow the magical talisman that will save us all from sure death.

A single touch is all that is required to transfer a virus from your cloth or paper face-hugger to a surface, food or other person.

I would like to hear BTH and the rest of Karen Nation explain how they wash and disinfect their cloth face-diapers after every touch.

Or how their paper goo-pads are being disposed of in a proper waste container on a regular basis throughout the day.

Or how their masks are protecting them from the fecal and other matter that gets on their shoes every time they venture out into society and track through grocery stores, parking lots and restrooms.

246 Here's a bit from an observation on Covid outcome, totally cheery.

"Increasingly, beholding one another in the street - masked, visored, alert for the slightest incursion into our personal six foot of space, jumping out of our skins at the slightest cough, sniffle or sneeze - it is becoming clear that we no longer look upon one another and perceive the iconic shape of the human being in history - limbs, trunk, head, face, gaze, smile - but see instead a moving blob of festering matter, biofluids, glands, adipoctytes, viruses, microbiota, fungi, yeasts, acids, maggots, phage, proteins, stool and mucus - oozing, sweating, belching, snorting, wind-breaking, weeping, puking, seeping, urinating, excreting organisms riddled with mostly imperceptible orifices, from which are expelled unpleasant and deadly liquids, substances, gases, odours and pathogens. To paraphrase the Killers' song, are we human or are we (bio)hazard?

How strange that, while emotional incontinence is increasingly valued and praised, physical human effusions are ever more anathematised. Where once human beings aspired to being gods, we now appear to have entered the final phase of our self-degradation: perceiving ourselves predominantly as a pestilence on the earth."

275 >>I think that it is absolutely classic that the WSJ suddenly believes that in the dying throes of a virus that is burning itself out just like every other virus in history, poorly worn snot-sponges are somehow the magical talisman that will save us all from sure death.

NYC-based media are hyper about Wuhan flu because their city's/state's response to it was so mismanaged that it became a hot zone, contributing roughly 1/3 of the US's deaths. They know people who've gotten the flu an died, while most of us have had a drastically difference experience.

I take their panic -- and their advice -- with a grain of salt. For example, maybe wearing a mask while commuting to/from my micro-apartment in a highrise where 100's of others live to work on a crowded subway makes a difference. Doesn't mean I feel the need to wear one on a beach or out walking on a trail or in my neighborhood of spaced apart single-family homes. . .

It doesn't matter what they find if they refuse to prosecute.

287 We were discussing The World At War earlier. There was a great outtake as an extra the DVDs. It seems there was a Berlin Hausfrau who was basically a good person but who was one of those people who after the fact tell you, "I told you that would happen!" ( Mrs. Wrecks has similar tendencies.) After the July 20 attempt on Hitler's life, she told numerous people that she knew it would happen. The Gestapo got wind of it and were not amused.

The Gestapo visited her apartment when she was out but a friend of hers was there. The Gestapo questioned her regarding her friend and she tried to smooth things over without much success. The Gestapo noticed a book in a stack of books that resembled the copies of Mein Kampf that were passed out to couples at their wedding. It was not Mein Kampf but rather a cookbook or something. Nevertheless the Gestapo believed it was and asked about suspect's reading habits. "Oh, she reads it morning, noon, and night," her friend told them. Satisfied, the Gestapo left and never came back.

My summary does not do this story justice but it does illustrate how lives in a dictatorship can turn on the smallest of things. Not that this has anything to do with cancel culture in our society.

317 The problem is conflating mask use data from clinical environments with training and procedures to the general public. People aren't changing masks frequently enough.

Additionally, paper masks only provide a modest reduction in the aerosol dispersion to others, they dont protect you at all. There is a decent body of work that hints that wear a mask can increase your viral load - pushing a minor infection to something more serious. I suspect that wear a mask for an extended period of time saturates it, then increases the viral load of a cough or sneeze.

Social distancing is plagued by inconsistencies - we should have focused on specific areas - elevators, cabs, busses, trains, and airplanes. Not painting lines on floors.

If I thought I had it, I wouldn't wear a mask. Id self isolate - cabin in woods until test results came back with a pile of hcq, z packs, and whiskey.

416 What does Latinx mean? Is it a non-gender specific term?

Correct. It's forcing the white academic obsession with gender-bending onto a language where it doesn't fit. Literal imperialism.

Yeah, the use of Latinx implies that these white women would flatten the genders in the whole Spanish language. Virtually all Spanish nouns must now end in "X." For justice.

431 #408 Yes, NL. It removes the masculine and feminine versions of the noun (or adjective I suppose if you're describing e.g. Latino music).

I don't know how it would work for French when they don't use a simple -a or -o ending like Spanish and Italian (-i and -e plurals) to indicate gender so I guess we'll be spared at least that b.s. here.
