The Saturday Night Joke

Russ and Sam, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.
One day Russ didn't show up. Sam didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something. But after Russ hadn't shown up for a week or so, Sam really got worried.
However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park,
Sam didn't know where Russ lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Sam figured he had seen the last of Russ, but one day, Sam approached the park and-- lo and behold! -- there sat Russ! Sam was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then he said, 'For crying out loud Russ, what in the world happened to you?'

Russ replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Sam. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Russ said, 'you know Sue, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Sam, 'I remember her. What about her?'

'Well, the little gold-digging bitch figured I was rich and she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.

'The judge gave me 30 days for perjury. H/T Hrothgar

Sounds like quite a deal. Perhaps a permanent MoMe Castle.

ANYONE IN THE MARKET FOR 63 acres of pure emerald Ireland is in luck: A 22-bed mansion on the isle’s southeastern edge is up for sale, for a cool $2.87 million. Pulling that price up or down, depending on your perspective, is the site’s rather interesting history.

The mansion, known as Loftus Hall, goes back to the 12th century, and has seen several regime changes over the years. The most infamous chapter in its history, no doubt, comes from the 18th century. According to legend, a raging storm drove a passing traveler to seek a few nights’ refuge at the Hall, which the Loftus’s happily granted.

I'm not sure why Gwyneth Paltrow just can't ride off into the sunset quietly.H/T redc1c4

Gwyneth Paltrow’s “This Smells Like My Vagina” candle for Goop almost seems mundane now.

On Sunday, the 47-year-old Oscar winner posted a video on Instagram of a FaceTime call with her “Iron Man” co-star Robert Downey Jr., with the pair encouraging people to register to vote for the presidential election in November.

At the end of their chat, 55-year-old Downey asked, “What else important are you doing today? You selling vagina candles? What are you up to?”

In response, the “Politician” star joked, “I made a new candle just for you. It smells like my taint.”

Today, August 1st, is National Mustard Day. Suck it up Buttercups.

When word first arrived here at InsideHook HQ that Oskar Blues Brewery was collaborating with French’s Mustard on a beer brewed with the popular neon-yellow condiment, our reaction was pretty mixed. Some of us were immediately disgusted by the idea. Others were curious but not too hopeful that it’d actually taste good, and some of us — the mustardheads, I suppose — were eager to try it, convinced that the brewery must have unlocked a classic flavor combination. After all, the foods we tend to associate the most with mustard — hot dogs, bratwurst, burgers, those giant soft pretzels — all pair perfectly with a nice, cold beer. Maybe cutting out the middle-man and putting the mustard directly in the beer would be a stroke of genius.

The limited-edition beer, brewed in honor of National Mustard Day (Aug. 1), does in fact contain a healthy amount of the condiment; French’s says it was brewed with 150 pounds of its Classic Yellow Mustard. But if you’re like me and mustard immediately makes you think of brats and Bavarian pretzels, you’re probably expecting some sort of German pilsner. Surprisingly, Oskar Blues and French’s decided to go in a totally different direction: they describe Mustard Beer as a “tropical wheat beer,” infused with key lime, lemon, tangerine and passion fruit.

***

Obviously not a logistics expert but a Genius Award Winner.

ULY 29--Upon returning to her home at 11 PM, a Florida Woman last week discovered her husband “engaged in sexual intercourse” with another woman, a circumstance that allegedly prompted a domestic pummeling and the wife’s arrest by police, records show.

According to cops, Nicole Denison, a 29-year-old flight attendant, interrupted the marital infidelity when she arrived Wednesday at her family’s residence in Safety Harbor, a city in the Tampa Bay area.

Denison, police allege, punched her 34-year-old spouse “in his left eye causing a ‘black eye.’” Denison’s husband also sustained scratches to his forehead and a bruise on his right arm “at the hands of the defendant.”

Then, in a move straight out of “Animal House,” Denison allegedly took her husband’s acoustic guitar and smashed it against the wall, destroying the instrument and “leaving a gaping hole in the wall.”

60 Drove from LA to Las Vegas and back today for a stupid business meeting. Didn't stay in LV because if I did I would probably never make it out.

On the way back I stopped in San Bernardino and visited the house I lived in from '70 to '75 (as a 7 to 12 y/o), and also stopped by my elementary school and the 7-11 I used to walk to and get a slurpee from with my brother. The playground at the school still had the same poles up where I remember endlessly playing tether ball.

Best of all I visited the baseball field my late Dad and his buddies built way back then for their kids, where I learned to play baseball and be a normal kid. Grass infield and outfield, dirt base paths. High class field built from a vacant lot by a bunch of real Fathers.

Took a lot of pictures I will email to my 86 y/o Mom tonight.

And of course, as was common when I lived there, the mountains behind the house were fully involved with a yuge brush fire.

Sucks getting old but memory sure is nice.

125 Best beer song? "I Love Louisa" from 'The Bandwagon', sung by Fred Astaire.

How I love a glass of beer!
(More beer!)
Beer goes very good with beer
(More beer!)
When I'm drinking beer I'm thinking, ach life is dear
But there's someone I love even more than beerI love Louisa, Louisa loves me
When we rode on the merry-go-round
I kissed Louisa and then Louisa, Louisa kissed me
We were so happy, so happy and freeAch, ach, Madchen, beautiful Louisa
Ach, when I choose them, I never want to lose them
Someday Louisa, Louisa will be
More than just a Fraulein to meA Frenchman loves a glass of vine
(More beer!)
The English think the whiskey's fine
(More beer!)
And when I comb off, all the foam off I drink a toast
To the Germans and the Madchen, I love most

140 I made the Pilgrimage to the new Collector's Firearms up in Houston, today.

They moved into a former Barnes & Noble Bookstore, transforming the space into a 40,000 sq. ft. brightly lit Hall of Shooty Goodness Galore.

Over 20,000 guns in stock, lots of NFA noisemakers and noise-stoppers. Antique guns dating back to the 14th Century. Guns once owned by famous Great White Hunters of the heyday of the Safari.

Lots of modern stuff, too.

The customer lounge area would be great for a mini-mo-meet, other than their cranky prohibition on lighting up a cigar, there.

I can overlook that detail, in order to enjoy the World's Largest Gun Store.

If any of you find yourself just West of the Galleria are of Houston, near the intersection of Westheimer & Voss, I'd say the place is a Must See on your agenda.

Enjoy!

210 So, the Party Line is that Portland is absolutely calm and tranquil, outside of the chaos in front of the Federal courthouse. The governor of Oregon tweeted out a picture of Portland's skyline, to emphasize how calm and tranquil it was.

Well, it turns out that Portland had more homicides in July (15), than in any other month in over thirty years. July saw 63 shootings in Portland, compared to 28 a year ago.

Two things are driving this: a substantial fraction of the Portland Police Bureau is on riot duty, and as the first "policing reform", Portland abolished the "Gang Task Force" (renamed the "Gun Violence Task Force" for PC reasons).

Most of the shootings in Portland are gangbangers shooting at other gangbangers, and the Gang Task Force tried to stop that. Since the gangbangers are black, this was deemed racist. What the Gang Task Force particularly tried to stop was revenge shootings after a gangbanger got shot - without the task force, many of the shootings in July are revenge shootings.

"Progressives" in Portland are understandably defensive about this, and are arguing that the police don't actually prevent any crimes, they only investigate them. It's purely a coincidence that shootings are up so much.

You'd think that Portland trendies wouldn't particularly care, since Black Lives Matter only when cops shoot black people, but a couple of nights ago, two gangs had a shootout in a white middle class neighborhood, firing more than 150 bullets, and hitting several apartments and parked cars (albeit only one person). Since that is mere property damage, local residents should not be concerned with this.

291 On the Chess thread it was asked "Why do we have toenails".

When you walk, the bottom of the feet is not moving, relative to the earth, while it is in contact with the ground. However when you step forward the top of your toes are the fastest moving part of your body, and would get cut (bare feet) by twigs and undergrowth.

In a barefoot existence you wouldn't live very long without toenails. The abrasion on the toenails naturally trimmed their length and thinned the nails which kept them from becoming ingrown. In the era of shoes we really need to scrape the tops of the toenails, to thin them so they don't become ingrown.

He thinks that having each state set its own CCP virus restrictions, and that we need a national shutdown to rid ourselves of this nasty virus.

And how long should the shutdown last, you might ask? Uh, until October, actually,

Remember this judgment that the country should be shut down until just before Election Day is purely based on Science, peasants!

Lawmakers who attended the funeral of late Rep. John Lewis (D-GA) in Atlanta earlier this week are exempt from Washington, D.C.'s, self-quarantine restrictions, according to District Mayor Muriel Bowser's office.

Regarding why attendees at Lewis' funeral escaped the strictures of self-quarantine, Bowser Press Secretary Susana Castillo characterized the ceremony as an essential government activity, telling Just the News on Friday, "Government activity is essential, and the Capitol of the United States is exempt from the Mayor's Order."

The mayor's office still deems the funerals of regular people non-essential activity, however. When asked whether attendees of non-government funerals in high-risk areas are still required to self-quarantine under the mayor's order, Castillo responded simply, "Yes."

450 Well, I only got about 3 hours into the poor wretched Panhard today. Hooked up the exhaust pipes to the engine head pipes, and fixed the forward exhaust pipe hanger.

Made a start on reconfiguring the clutch cable. The factory had done it ass-backwards: the core of the cable was anchored in a stud on the engine block, and the cable jacket pushed against the clutch release lever.

I re-clocked the lever to 11:00 from 6:00, and commenced construction of an anchor support for the jacket. The basics are in place now, but I need to add some braces so it can withstand the forces on it. Clutch cable will wind up being about 6" shorter, and consequently less friction, too.

And I also got the carb and the intake pipes reinstalled. The "O" ring that seals the left intake pipe to the carb base support was torn. Probably explains why that cylinder missed a lot.

Chicago and New York have similar quarantine orders. Think that those orders are being enforced against Lewis funeral attendees?

In an amusing example of backfiring, the Chicago police department is trying to get Chicago cops to volunteer to police the Democratic convention in Milwaukee.

Aside from some legal issues, the Second City Cop blog noted that under Mayor Lightfoot's orders, any cop returning from Milwaukee is required to go into quarantine for fourteen days, using their personal time to do so. A pretty good excuse if you are being pressured to go.

--To wit, a couple of choice comments from Outkick.com:

It is no secret that the PRC dreams of supplanting the US as the world's dominant nation; however, the US is still the world's No. 1 economic and military power. But the PRC is already on top of the leader board in one notable aspect: It is the most murderous regime in the history of the world. The PRC/CCP murdered approximately 76 Million human beings in the 20th Century. That makes the PRC/CCP almost 4 times more lethal than the Nazis, who killed approximately 20 Million people. (See, https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/20TH.HTM)

Of course, the evil Nazi thrown from power when they were defeated by the Allies in 1945. By contrast, the PRC/CCP government that grabbed power in 1949 still maintains its authoritarian grip on the Chinese people today. In 2020, by unleashing the Corona Virus on an unsuspecting world, the current 2nd generation of mass-murderous CCP leadership has killed over 670,000 human beings, including over 150,000 US citizens (and many thousands of Black-Americans). The PRC is also the primary source of illicit fentanyl, which has killed over 100K US citizens during the last few years through drug overdoses.

The wonderful game of basketball was invented by the great Dr. James Naismith, a Canadian-American physician, educator, sports coach, and Christian chaplain. Among other accomplishments, he founded the University of Kansas basketball program and is also credited with designing the first football helmet. Although Dr. Naismith would no doubt be gratified to know that basketball has spread to the far-away lands of Xinjiang province, one can only presume that he would be mortified a story about the sport he invented would prominently feature reports of child abuse and ethnic concentration camps.

This is not a complicated issue: It is the binary choice between Democracy & Freedom vs. Socialism/Communism & Slavery. Perhaps it is time for the NBA to wake up from its woke slumber and get on the Real Right Side of History.

Herb

One account said the Chinese were harvesting organs from the Uighurs in the camps. But the NBA didn't notice; they were too busy vilifying American police for using pepper spray and tear gas.

One of the things that I hate the most about Facebook is that it seems to have successfully homogenized the internet. Even among people and companies who DON'T just go the lazy route and use the platform for what used to require a website in pre-Facebook days, it's all pretty much the same now. Remember back when people would f*ck around with things trying to make cool stuff people wanted to look at?

I'm so glad I got to experience the internet when it was an inventive, wild, and overall very free place.

Ha. Yep. I got my first PC in 1996 and it was off to the races from there. Even up to 2002-2005 or so was pretty great.

I bet you could see it visually if one were to make an overlaid graph with AOL getting granny online, the big mp3 theft sites being brought to heel (napster and audiogalaxy are the two I remember most), and the rise of Myspace and then Facebook. There are probably a half dozen other significant moments that I'm not thinking of.

We had CompUSA around us.

But I'm still nostalgic for the little computer stores (and often doubling as comic book stores) where you could buy magazines with coding projects and physical floppies of games.

Heck, I still can't get used to not having physical media after I give someone money. I looked at the HD extended edition Lord of the Rings movies that are on Amazon for $7 each right now and couldn't pull the trigger because I couldn't see any option to download and keep. I'm just buying occasional access to them. No thanks.

We always pronounced it "compusa", like "refusa".

There was also Computer City, I think.

I think it was CompUSA where I overheard a salesman (who'd probably been selling vacuum cleaners the week before) telling a customer that one monitor was better than another because the "dot pitch was larger".

They think they can pull this off before November.

Trump is wise to them and they're "mail-In" ballot sham of another coup attempt.

Very simple game but a lot of fun, and I think my kids would enjoy it.

The only other computer anecdote I can offer is seeing some tech nerd type guys in the early 80s, and I mean EARLY 80s who were chatting with others on the net. The significance of this didn't hit me because 99 percent of the population was not in on it. But it is interesting that they had pretty much this technology forty years ago. The difference is that no one cared at the time. It was there, but the impact on society was slight.

Goolag is responsible for homogenizing the internet by "guiding" developer hands through "search optimization" (which meant follow Goolag's rules or suffer), and "mobile" did the rest. I know what Goolag did and I know they did it on purpose. Fucking megalomaniacs.

I remember when the internet was the best tool of immediate, free and open communication known to man. I knew the Left would ruin the internet but I thought they would do it through government restriction, not mob rule and corporate takeovers. They're predictably unpredictable.

703 The biggest problem with everything being digital and no physical media is it makes censorship very easy. They don't need to burn books anymore although I suspect they enjoy it. Now a few keystrokes can change everyone's book or movie. If they're not doing it yet they will be.

And in a few years, the same way that all black things like Uncle Ben and Aunt Jemima and black cartoon voices done by whites and portrayals of the antebellum South are suddenly offensive, all things that contain a single man and woman pursuing a relationship or family will also be offensive.

The lefty crazies will do away with all portrayals of such as it is marginalizing. Casablanca. Canceled! Cheers. Canceled! Pride and Prejudice. Canceled! Breaking Bad. Canceled! (they had a family)

710 I first got an AOL account in law school, 1994. Still use it. It does have features I like re: email, which is mostly all I use it for. I don't want to bother to change it.

Darwin, re your: "I'm still just a tad unclear on how an ebook that requires no trees,
ink, shipping, storage, or other resources still costs the same as a
physical copy of the same book."

C'mon. You may not like the fact that you are paying well above marginal cost for a product priced as if the product were a real (not virtual) book, but they can set the price and they don't have to sell it at X (cost of production) + Y (gov't approved additional cost). The e-books may be where they make up losses elsewhere or they may just be jerks, in which case, incite a mob and burn them down. [Note: that is what is called unserious commentary.]

The thing about ebooks expiring when the user dies is easy to explain. What you are acquiring is not the actual "thing" (i.e., a book). You are obtaining a *license* to use the product on the terms of the license. A license is a permission to use something. Licenses are personal to the user and generally terminate upon the user's death. Licenses are generally not "property" that someone's estate can own. (In a sense, you do take it with you.)

I prefer reading actual books that I can mark up if desired. My brain and visual system developed based on reading tangible things, not computer screens. If there's not much difference in price, I'll buy the actual book (which usually comes with a license to read the document on line).

Hope that helps splain things.

I am going to give it another try as it is has to be in the Horde top ten. My recollection of the film is they thought the future would be some dystopian version of Tokyo. Japan was rising at the time and I think a lot of people thought that was going to be permanent.

So I will offer a final hot take to see if it spurs conversation. It seems like every youtube reaction channel has to react to Back to the Future. I get it, I saw it when it came out, it was a good Summer movie. But people act like it was a great film that should be in a top ten list. I don't see it. It was entertaining, but I bet there were several better movies from that year alone.

750 So I will offer a final hot take to see if it spurs conversation. It seems like every youtube reaction channel has to react to Back to the Future. I get it, I saw it when it came out, it was a good Summer movie. But people act like it was a great film that should be in a top ten list. I don't see it. I very seldom read the comments on youtube.

Some films are more popular than others for varying reasons.

Like US Presidents.....

751 I had to look it up on IMDB, but imo Silverado and Witness were better films. There are some other's on there that people could argue for too.

758 polling Americans on presidents is a pretty futile task. Half the country will rate Obama as number 1 and the other half will go with Trump or Reagan. A percentage that are right will go with Washington so my numbers might be off.

I agree that the Back to Future movies were fun. The 1st was the one that I liked most, but I'm not usually a big sequel fan.

Silverado was definitely a better movie! Witness was also good. But I like Harrison Ford, so I guess I have a bias there.

Westerns should get an inordinate amount of the top slots just because. I need to rewatch both of those films. I am well acquainted with TOJW, but I can't say a lot about The Shootist. Of course I know who starred in the film but I don't recall watching that film in a long time.

I grew up mostly on the gritty Westerns like the Leone films, Eastwood movies, The Long Riders, and that kind of stuff. I do love Rio Bravo though and several other Wayne films.

Sure he's funny... and he's a leftist. Choice or lose... "conservatives".

782 Hi there would you mind sharing which blog platform you're using?
I'm planning to start my own blog in the near future
but I'm having a hard time making a decision between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal.
The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I'm looking for something unique.
P.S My apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!
