Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | What A Concept! An Ally That Will Fight, Rather Than Expect America To Spend Its Blood And TreasureWhether Prime Minister Modi can drag India into the 21st century, without becoming a typical big-government nepotist like so many of his predecessors remains to be seen. But the idea of a military alliance between India and the United States is appealing; imagine the complexities for China if we and India could present a united front against their expansionist tendencies. But that alliance would have to be based on a revamped model...something along the lines of our "realpolitik" from years past. As this excellent article points out, having an alliance with countries that don't participate but rather expect us to do everything is no alliance at all. If we needed another bloated, militarily decrepit ally we could just invite France or Germany into NATO. Oh...wait. The U.S. Wants India as a Real Ally, Not Another Helpless DependentAlliances should be a means to an end, not a popularity contest, like winning bragging rights by accumulating the most Facebook friends or online “likes.” Yet of late Washington has collected mostly ornamental allies, which add more burdens and obligations than benefits. Montenegro and North Macedonia, for instance, are geopolitical jokes that dilute NATO decision-making while adding to America’s obligations. But even such stalwarts as Germany, Japan, and South Korea needlessly remain dependent despite decades as U.S. allies. All three believe that it is Washington’s job to protect them. Their primary responsibility is to agree to be defended, not to contribute to joint security by increasing efforts to match capabilities. This behavior is corrosive. Although Washington’s foreign policy establishment is appalled by Trump’s sensible demands for increased burden-sharing, his perspective, however maladroitly expressed, reflects the common sense of average Americans who pay the bills. Why does most Pentagon spending end up as de facto welfare for rich friends who have more important priorities than defending their territories and peoples?Unlike most of our allies who live in nice neighborhoods protected by Americans, India is in a very tough neighborhood indeed, with militant Islamic Pakistan, Bangladesh and China, not to mention they are within spitting distance of Afghanistan, as well as a couple of former Soviet republics that are spectacularly dysfunctional. A partnership with India modeled on our relationship with Israel would be beneficial to both countries. Our expertise in logistics, our military technology and information gathering systems, coupled with India's personnel might be a potent counter to China. Now if we can just get Russia to get into a pissing match with China we would be well on our way to isolating them and keeping their focus on their borders, rather than world expansion and domination. I'd hardly call South Korea a helpless dependent. And Japan's disarmament made political sense because for the first thirty or so years of the Cold War, Asian politics were dominated by people who remembered first hand the Japanese military. Rearming Japan risked pushing those countries into the communist sphere of influence.

Russia is never, ever going to get into "a pissing match" with China. Russia and China go on joint military maneuvers, practicing for the day when they try to take down the United States.
I once thought that such an alliance might be possible. I didn't think that a former KGB man would be able to maintain an iron grip on the nation for this long. But, it is what it is. Putin is "President for Life," Communists still control the Duma, and the Russian people will apparently allow their brutal mistreatment at the hands of the Communists to forever go unpunished. So much so that the Ft. Bend County Judge (mayor of the county), is now an Indian Democrat swept in with the same 2018 debacle that gave Harris County it's not infamous Commendante Lina Hildago. Any "alliance" with India should also be wrapped around the idea of a major project, the goal of which is to break the U.S. Indian populations away from their present fixation with democrat party politics. Yeah Alex touched on the historical correction. Japan was ordered to sit in the corner, geopolitically, after her crushing defeat, for good reasons, and it worked out spectacularly. Germany, not exactly the same, but similar, and though a different situation, it worked out well too (collapse of the Warsaw Pact).
South Korea spends plenty for defense, and even acts, sometimes, but is crippled by a suicidally idiotic instinct to treat the North as anything but a crazy bloodthirsty enemy, some times. But that hasn't really changed anything. And alliances are means to an end, not an end in themselves (see NATO, today, for the latter problem). Burden-sharing is nice, if you can get it, but if vital interests aren't involved what are you doing anyway? Trump's push for greater spending by NATO countries is harmless, but also pointless. It's not just North Macedonia (!!!) that's irrelevant, in a collective defense sense - it's all of NATO, today. There is no external threat for NATO to address. Russia's fairly sad little predations on its periphery aren't even a minor US interest. The Visegrad countries merit US support, in that they are sincere fans of the US (yeah, they have reason to want close ties and security guarantees, too) - but kind of too bad for them. Indians wants an ally that is not in consuming it.
Selling them hardware and tech support (ironic) for the hardware would be a good place to start. India's interest is in colonizing the former United States. Let us not forget that many of the naturalized Indians immediately go into the voting booth and vote for Socialists. I have worked with many who had green cards, and spouted off hard core Marxist slogans, sounding no different than that Idiot Sawant character in Seattle - and very eager to get citizenship to vote for Communism. But if you want to send your kids to get killed to support a culture that wants you enslaved, the former United States is exactly the patsy for that operation. Was there ever a foreign entanglement that the former United States got involved with that had a happy ending and wasn't marked by acres and acres of tombstones? Posted by: Ignoramus at July 26, 2020 12:30 PM (4t+w+) I'm convinced the entrenched State Department culture is that of representing the interests of the country to which they are stationed to Washington instead of vice versa. It puts them in the position of granting favors rather than asking for them and gets their ass kissed. Diplomacy is better than war, but the entire department seems blind to instances where negotiation is a tactic rather then a real effort to solve a dispute. I hope that you recall that when the Wuhan Death Miasma was in full operation, and the powers that be didn't yet condemn HCQ, India said "we make lots of that and we will gladly sell that to you if you increase your H1 visas by 500,000 people each year." A little-known aspect of 20th-century international politics that has actually been the root cause of MUCH of what has gone wring, is this:
The Soviet Union courted India as an ally, and India responded positively; they never went full commie, but they formed various alliances and detentes with the Soviets, and the Soviets supplies India with military jet fighters and equipment, etc.. In response, the US made the "strategic decision" to form a military alliance with India's enemy, Pakistan, "to counter Soviet influence in the region." While that may have seemed like a clever maneuver at the time, it ultimately proves disastrous, because Pakistan is Islamist, and Islam ultimately proved to be a greater threat than Soviet communism. So we supplied massive military and financial aid to Pakistan, who then funneled that support to propagating Islam around the world, helping the mujahideen, funding terrorism, etc. etc. And the US taxpayer was footing the bill for all of it. So: Now finally flipping alliances to having a US-India pact is absolutely REQUIRED, and a genius political move by Trump. Posted by: zombie at July 26, 2020 01:12 PM (HEEq1) 132
Anyway, don't see any possibility whatever of a formal alliance with India that would obligate us in any material way, no collective security stuff, under any US president. Not the way India rolls, in any case. Triangulating and such WRT Chi-Nah will be about it. No need even for triangulation when it comes to Pakistan and jihadism.

143 No, zombie, it wasn't disastrous, it was exactly the right thing to do, and worked out just fine.
The world changes, you adapt. At any given moment, you make your call on what serves your interests best. If things change later, you change. India didn't need to be "courted" by the USSR, Moscow was the natural and only available counterweight to Chi-Nah in the period under discussion. India made its call, we did the obvious and logical (and successful) call in return. Posted by: rhomboid Well, it was one of those "deal with the devil" situations. As were many of our Cold War alliances, in which we sided with strongmen and warlords just so long as they promised to be anti-Soviet. It was good from a Truman Doctrine perspective, but from 30,000 feet had so many toxic side-effects that in the long run it's debatable whether or not it helped the US's international standing. Of course, I'm saying this from the comfort of a world where the USSR no longer exists -- possibly as a partial consequence of all these "deal with the devil" alliances all adding up to topple to communist leadership. And maybe if we HADN'T hooked up with Pakistan and the mujahideen and Banana Republic dictators and so forth, the Soviets might have spread the influence worldwide and WON the Cold War. So I admit that's an argument t be made on both sides. Discuss. Posted by: zombie at July 26, 2020 01:23 PM (HEEq1) 170

It's important to remember that our supine allies were very much creatures of our own making. The problem with allies possessed of the strength and the independence to pull their own weight is that they can just as easily choose to pull against us when our interests conflict. We're at the opposite extreme, now, so the problems with that state of affairs seem vague and indistinct, but in 1945 it looked like, on the basis of the last 30 years (and maybe the last 300 years) of evidence, allowing Western European countries (+ Japan) to pursue their own foreign policies was... inadvisable. Unity of decision making (meaning, ideally, "we make the decisions, you carry them out") seemed more and more important as the implications of the nuclear age became apparent. We wrote pacifism directly in to Japan's constitution. We suffered mighty angst (and endured a lot of Soviet-thrown propaganda egg on our face) at the thought of re-arming Western Germany. In light of the Soviet threat, we allowed our allies to re-grow their strength but worked hard to constrain their independence. This is party of why France was so dissatisfied with NATO. They correctly ascertained that it was meant to restrict the freedom of action of its European members. The problem now is that what started as a conscious strategy sweetened with some feel-good internationalism-and-brotherhood pablum hardened into an unexamined assumption for the next generation of foreign-policy people. The generation(s) after them, thanks in part to their exquisite "educations," actually believed the pablum, and forgot that foreign policy must change to follow the national interest. I also thought it was a little odd that, with the exception of Germany, the countries name-checked in the post were ones that have been exceptions to the rule. Japan is laboring mightily to rebuild its military strength given the constraints of their domestic political situation. South Korea never let its strength flag, and the problems we're having with them lately are due to policy differences with the current government (so maybe more independence than we'd like, again). France also is quite capable (the only country outside the US to have a CVN, until the Chinese get around to building one), and quite active; once again the issue there is that they have different notions of what's in their national interest. Okay, that's long enough. The 3-year-old is rearranging the furniture. May Pixy have mercy upon my carriage returns. Posted by: Directrix Gazer at July 26, 2020 01:40 PM (W/L2T) 221

Since we're going off-topic:
I witnessed an incident yesterday that, on the surface, might seem trivial, but to me it indicated a major development in American society -- and not in a good way. Here's what happened: I like going to garage sales, yard sales, estate sales, etc., and hinting for bargains. But this goddamn Covid-19 nonsense has obliterated the garage sale landscape -- there used to be hundreds of them every weekend, and nowadays there are just a handful if you're lucky -- sometimes there are none at all in my area. So when I saw there was a big estate sale announced for yesterday nearby, I jumped at the chance. As did everyone else -- it was packed. Masks required. And a waiting line to pay. So I was in line, and the person in front of me went up to pay. She was a black woman. The people running the estate sale were white. And the following conversation happened: "How much for all this jewelry?" "Hmmmm, well, let's see, hmmm, you're got some nice pieces. All combined, I'll let you have it for $60." "Nuh uh. I want a 90% discount." "Wha--?????" (Flummoxed.) "I saw you giving discounts to all them white ladies." "Yes, we're giving about 25% off on everything now because it's the end of the day. I already incorporated that into the $60 price I offered." "Are you going to treat me different because of the color f my skin? Really? I want 90% discount, just like you gave discount to those white ladies." "B-b-but..." "Really? You really going to treat me different? Seriously?" "Uh..... (Paralyzed by fear of being accused of racism.) OK, Six dollars total." "I THOUGHT so." (Slaps down $6 and scoops up the jewelry. Mumbles dire accusations under her breath as she leaves.) --- This is the future. In any interpersonal encounter or conflict, the race card will ALWAYS be played, and the white person will ALWASY be forced to back down, even if the demands are outrageous. Not just in headline-worthy showdowns involving corporations or universities or large mobs, but in every minor daily one-of-one situations. Posted by: zombie at July 26, 2020 01:47 PM (HEEq1) 235

220---......In light of the Soviet threat, we allowed our allies to re-grow their strength but worked hard to constrain their independence.
The generation(s) after them, thanks in part to their exquisite "educations," actually believed the pablum, and forgot that foreign policy must change to follow the national interest.... I've worked with troop from the Balkans, and while they aren't military powerhouses, I think it's still useful to have them as allies, and possibly moreso than places like Germany. Let's be honest...most Western European nations aren't military powerhouses either. The US does most of the heavy lifting, and other nations are more for political cover or support.
The difference is, Balkans nations and other, poorer nations are eager to support the US and show they have capabilites. Western European armies act like they are our equals, hold things up politically, and don't care about supporting our goals (and, in fact, score points domestically for fucking the US). While I was in the Balkans, the US tried to steer those nations into specialty fields, like EOD, where they could deploy relatively modest force packages that had larger impact, freeing us up to focus on other areas. Others have noted that Korea and Japan probably don't belong on the list. Yes, Japan doesn't really do much when the US sends troops abroad. But that's the fault of the constitution that was put in place when the US occupied Japan.
Part of the problem is the disparity in power between the US and pretty much every other country on the globe. A number of countries that you ordinarily wouldn't think of sent troops to Iraq in support of the US-led occupation. But the bulk of the work was still carried out by the Americans (and to a lesser extend the British) simply because the US military is that much more effective than everyone else. So do we give up on them as allies? I don't know that it's necessarily such a good idea. It depends to a certain extent on the country. For instance, militarily guaranteeing Ukraine is probably a disaster in the making. But having allies in less precarious locations can be very useful depending on how events play out in the future. If a not that rich country like Romania is willing to send a military contingent to help out when we ask (and they did), then they can be our allies, imo. Gravitas (not O'Keefe) does some India based news (in English) .. on the WION youTube channel. They go after China like CNN goes after Trump and patriots, but their attacks are much more fact based.
Some smart guy (?) suggested we need a India/Russia alliance, as opposed to Pakistan/China. It does seem part of the Nixon/China door opening was about keeping a wedge between Russia/China ... but now we (and the world) are going cold on China. China Russia seem to be aligning a little, I don't have any knowledge on how much. But before the DeepState ran their Trump/Russia PsyOp, even Trump talked of getting along with (detente, more than alliance?) the Russkies. Some of our other allies seem quite willing to work with Russia (Merkel for sure, Israel to some degree?, others?). idk why Clinton gladly gave/sold military tech to Russia, but the DeepState seemed intent on keeping Trump out of any Russian talks (protecting their grifter's game?, or some globalist agenda?) Posted by: zombie at July 26, 2020 01:47 PM (HEEq1) This is not new. In the eighties I was in college as a single mom working at the local hospital. I went to the public aide office.
