- I knew what the line items were, because my dad warned me in advance that I was going to be pissed
- I swore a lot more where I could be heard by my parents

Nothing like those line items on your first pay stub to act as one hell of a wake-up call. Doubly so when you consider that:
- Your first paycheck ever is usually small, and thus the percentages will *never* get better
- Your employer is forbidden to show you (forbidden by law) that he *also* had to pay the same amount in SS/Medicare taxes on your behalf and that is *also* money you didn't get to put in your pocket.

I worked as early as the age as 12 for family friend's businesses like a bus boy for a restaurant, worked at a bike shop after school assembling bicycles...

But the bagboy job was the first official job. I had calculated up my hours against my wage and thought "yes, I'll have plenty of cash to buy this portable CD player for my car!"

Got the check and couldn't believe how much the government stole from me. Needless to say I didn't get that CD Player like I had hoped. That was the day I became aware of who was taking this money from me.

I could be talked into a national sales tax as a complete replacement for the existing tax code, but I cannot be talked into a VAT. Yup, that's where the "only on new goods and services" comes in. Otherwise, it's double taxation. Brand new house? Brand new car? Tax. Used house? Used car? No tax.

Some things - like food and medical care - are always new. But you can grow your own food if you want. But it will make it easy to remove consent through minimizing consumption or consuming in the used market wherever possible (and also other side effects, like durability being a major factor on major goods). I wouldn't even exempt food and clothing, but that's a niggle I would be happy to negotiate in any fantasy land where the issue comes up for serious discussion.

- Earn a lot. Live small and sock it away
- Once you have a cushion to get you through predictable major repairs and durable goods and have no debt, quit your job
- Earn just enough to cover your minimal expenses and taxes, and go on various assistance programs to get your money back

Barring that, you can choose poverty and government assistance to withdraw yourself from taxation, but that's a mighty bitter pill.

The Fair Tax Plan is the best national sales tax. No exemptions. Every new product or service is taxed. If you try to make exemptions for critical items, everything will eventually be exempted. No tax on used items.

A "prebate" is given to every citizen for the amount of twice the tax on the poverty level amount. No non-citizen gets the prebate, so you want as many illegals operating in the economy as guest workers as possible. They earn, spend and are taxed, but do not get the prebate.

1. The EU has already pretty much indicated that they won't accept an independent Scotland.
2. Assuming the new EU budget is approved, the big payers for the next 6 years are Ireland and Italy. *on a per capita basis

Which makes me laugh a lot - an online friend of mine is a big lefty Irishman who was super happy that they're still part of the EU post-Brexit. (To be fair, travel is a big hobby of his, so the EU's relative borderlessness is a direct benefit). We'll see how that holds up.

Boris Johnson is also holding Scotland to the agreement that there wouldn't be another referendum for a generation after the last one. So it seems like it'll be 2035 or so for the next effort to peel Scotland away for a life without the British and their ungrateful tax base.
