RENTAL CAR BLUES

Hertz Is 2020’s Biggest Bankruptcy So Far

The Wuhan Virus shutdown may have dealt a death blow to Hertz. Liquidating all those cars will also ripple through the economy via depressed trade-in values for consumers and lost new car sales for manufacturers if rental fleets don’t need to be refreshed like normal.

I almost always get a rental car when I travel. Having that car means I can get home if there is a black swan event that shuts down air travel (such as 9-11 or the Wuhan Virus) or if there’s simply a major weather event that snarls up air travel for multiple days. At 1,000 miles per day I can get home from most anywhere in in the country in two days, therefore the most important travel insurance to me is having a rental car.

Were any of you stranded out of town without a car on 9/11? Any good stories of trying to make it home when normally reliable passenger conveyances were not functioning like normal?

This is perhaps television’s greatest rental car moment:

And here’s an old Hertz commercial with a football player who won the Heisman Trophy at USC and then had a successful NFL career.

MONORAIL

Monorail.JPG

Before monorail crashes became a cultural meme (Sao Paulo, Disney World, The Simpsons) there was the tragic monorail accident at the 1968 World’s Fair in San Antonio.

"The jolt knocked one car off the rail and it tipped several connected cars off the track like an accordion, pulling cars and passengers to the ground and into a shallow lagoon below," a San Antonio Express-News article from that day reads.

STRONG ARMS

Baseball used to be my summertime companion. Between the Wuhan Virus canceling most of the season and the left-wing politicization of all professional sports, my passion just isn’t there for baseball or any sport nowadays. This little bit of baseball p@rn brings back a little of those old warm feelings.

THE COFFEE THAT WON THE WEST

If you rode a trail drive from Texas to Kansas in the 1870s, you were likely to have consumed a lot of Arbuckles Coffee.

Any cowboy who requested that Cookie prepare him a “triple venti half-caff soy with no foam” would likely find himself riding drag the rest of the trail drive. After fishing the rattlesnake out of his boot.

Arbuckles Coffee was so prevalent that most cowboys didn’t realize there was any other brand made. “Arbuckles” became a generic name for coffee, like Stetson for hat or Levi’s for jeans. To keep it that way, the company packaged trading cards with the coffee and coupons. The cards educated coffee drinkers about the West, covering such topics as cooking, geography, sports, U.S. history, birds and other zoological studies.

POSTERS OF YOUR CHILDHOOD

What posters did you have on your wall in your formative years?

I remember these two posters, both of which were somewhat aspirational, I suppose. I probably spent more time looking at the Fish Of The Gulf Of Mexico poster, because I had better chance of landing something on that poster.

Fish of The Gulf of Mexico.JPG

Charlies Angels.png

By the way - Kate Jackson was attractive and intelligent, but I realize now that the only friend of mine who claimed that Kate was his favorite angel (instead of Farah or Jaclyn like all the rest of us) grew up to be a vocal NeverTrumper. In retrospect, his “I’m more sophisticated than you” posturing was already evident.

Mrs. Throckmorton tells me she had a poster of one the boys from The Partridge Family on her wall when she was young. Since her future husband looked a lot more like Danny Bonaduce than David Cassidy in the 1970s, I’m really not sure which Partridge held the key to her pre-tween heart.

THROCKMORTON’S FIRST LAW OF LIVE MUSIC: IF THERE’S AN UPRIGHT BASS IN THE BAND, IT’S PROBABLY GOING TO BE GOOD

I’m not sure anyone has covered the various genres of country music as thoroughly as Emmylou Harris. From folk to hillbilly to bluegrass to country rock to drinking songs to dance hall music to Cajun, with even a little cowboy music and Andrews Sisters thrown in. Here’s Emmylou singing Blue Kentucky Girl from a show in Kentucky.

And no one can harmonize better than her. Here are Emmylou and Michael Ball making beautiful music together on Like Strangers.

One more Emmylou: Subbing for the late Gram Parsons on this beautiful duet of Love Hurts is Elvis Costello.

SPEAKING OF DUETS

In the previous ONT that I prepared, a conversation somehow sprung up about Vince Gill’s duet with Carrie Underwood on How Great Thou Art. I checked it out and y’all were right – it really is something special.

37 My latest letter to the editor, which, as with others, is highly unlikely to see the cold, gray ink of newsprint.

I share these here because you, as friends of the interwebs will at least endure my ramblings.

"It's time to stop and regain our footing.

Rational voices should be heard among your endless litany of videos showing people being shot, beaten, run over. Among the militant, armed with firearms, the news stories telling you the rare example to magnify fear, the outrageous cross-fighting between political factions, we should listen to those that represent the normal, the middle, the realists.

We have become a society ruled by the fringe, where edgy is preferable and more excitable than the calm and the steady.

Look at your televisions. Is there anyone on it that approximates reality. Every story is selectively plucked to elicit emotion, none are selected because they exhibit the calm and the rational. Every character created for entertainment is extreme, it's cringeworthy humor, it's a clinically unbalanced character trait, it's anything but a mom and dad and kids that work, that navigate the already complex world, that worship God and live the same angst of the life unexamined.

Because we no longer value intelligence. We no longer value virtue. We no longer are content to share experiences. We want the extreme. The extreme gives us that sweet, sweet dopamine fix that our brains desire.

We desire above all things to see something other than reality. Disfunction is entertainment. And entertainment has become something to emulate. We value the freakiest of the freaky.

Ask yourself why the pictures you see every day are of the fringe of society, no matter which end of society you ordinarily side with. And ask yourself how much society is desperate to have that camera trained on them for their fifteen minutes of fame.

Warhol was right. Life imitates art. We all want our fame. We are addicted to clicks.

And in the wash of meaningless self-importance and self-adoration, falls on deaf ears the voices of the normal, the calm, the rational.

In the storm, the tree that stands is not what we photograph. We photograph the destruction and the fallen.

In any event, I hope as you scroll through your social media and your 200 channels, you stop life for a moment and read and consider the thoughts of a rational people and what reality is for the middle, the normal, the common.

It should not be dismissed lightly for the loud and the extreme."

The next day it really hit home that those bastards could have gotten her.

I was prepared to drive to pick her and her crew up, but the rental car company allowed everyone to drive their cars to where ever they needed to go. I never forgot that little bit of kindness from corporate America.

Posted by: Jinx the Cat at July 26, 2020 10:19 PM (crGCi)

70 Time was, that rental car companies strongly affiliated with one major manufacturer or another.

In my Corporate Days, the company's preferred vendor was National, but by then they had more of a mixed fleet. I drove a lot of Chrysler and GM stock from them.

Interestingly, I still think one will hardly find any Honda product in a rental car fleet. They don't do much in fleet sales, either.

Finally, I believe that Budget/Dollar either is already in bankruptcy, or soon to join that woeful club? I don't keep track like I used to, because I don't travel like I used to.

99 The insurance company my dad worked for insured the 1968 Hemisfair. My parents are both from San Antonio and we spent much of the summer there.

We were at my aunt's house in San Antonio the day the monorail derailed. I remember seeing my dad on TV helping to rescue people. When he got to my aunt's house that evening, his shirt and pants were horribly bloodied. I was 8 and my brother was 6, so my mom and aunt tried to hide us from seeing dad's clothes, but we saw enough.

It was a horrible day.

144 I attended a birthday party via Zoom last night. About a dozen people attended - a handful of very old friends who I see a few times a year, and the rest being people I vaguely knew.

I'm sure I was the only Trump supporter (I didn't advertise that), so I found myself with a ready-made focus group of affluent left-wing Portlanders.

An observation - they hate Antifa and the rioters. One guy asked rather plaintively if Portland could establish a curfew (since the rioting all occurs after dark).

I noted that a curfew is useless unless you enforce it, and unless Ted Wheeler has the cojones to arrest hundreds of people for curfew violations, there would be no point to a curfew. He glumly acknowledged that.

They also hate that downtown Portland has been completely trashed - all the stores have been boarded up for a couple of months now, and there is anti-cop graffiti absolutely everywhere.

There was also discussion of the fact that the host, who lives in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in Portland, has just bought a firearm for the first time in his life. I guess he no longer has the assurance that the cops will show up if he calls 911 because someone is breaking into his house.

Are these people going to vote for Trump? No, but there is increasing disquiet that blue cities, with their ever-increasing taxes, have given up on the maintainence of public order.

157 In Anchorage, AK on 9-11 things airborne were very quiet except for scrambled Air Force interceptors going toward a jet coming in from the Pacific that was rumored to have been hijacked. Fortunately not true. Just bad comm from flight crews.

Our company had a crew stuck in Nome, Alaska due to air travel shutdown. Took them a few days to get home. No way to get out of Nome except by air.

Hunters in private planes were doing their fall hunts in the bush, and noticed that the skies were very quiet--no jets or propeller planes. When they took off, they contacted Flight Service on the radio and found out what happened. I think they arranged a special clearance for them to return to Anchorage.

174 Was at a small office conference center in State College, PA. There were probably 50 people crammed into the small kitchen watching the aftermath on a 10" black and white TV. Conference cancelled. When all the flights were grounded, we called the rental company and the poor gal was practically in tears saying they had no cars. We asked what to do with ours, and she said drive it back to the rental place in Springfield, MO, no 1way charge, and we'll figure out how to get it back where it belongs after you leave it. We drove past the PA crash before they closed the highway, but there was nothing to see. I was very impressed that the rental company didn't make it harder than it needed to be. The frickin' gas stations on the other hand, raised their prices ever time we stopped for a refill.

I still can't wrap my mind around what is motivating these young, white women to clearly let themselves be cannon fodder.

Do they think they're immune?
That they won't get hurt?
Or have they so worked themselves up they look forward to being what they imagine will be a martyr?

What has broken these women, that this is their motivation in life?
Not getting married, having children, building a family, a career--no, they want to kill themselves for a cause that doesn't even care they exist.

190 Portland and Seattle have relatively small areas targeted for the riots. Downtown, courthouses, police stations, Capitol Hill in Seattle. When the rioters venture out to where the mayors live then the police show up and fend them off.
Most people don't actually live or work in the areas targeted. They don't see it, feel it or know it. Once the riots start to get out of the control of the puppet masters and start going into the more affluent parts of town will they have their noses rubbed in it.
Too late then, idiots.

Posted by: Winston, dreg of society at July 26, 2020 10:55 PM (d9Irc)

191 The rioting is limited to parts of a few cities - which are clearly completely collapsed places, in a civic sense, with idiotic/hateful/stupid elected officials (and the voters who put them in office). Doubt it will spread.

192 So... rioters rampaged through Richmond again last night and, likely not coincidentally, my car got broken into. Whether it was my taste in music (they obviously went through my CDs but did not take any) or the lack of stealable stuff, they decided to slash my tire too. My daughter and I spend a very sweaty 30 or so minutes putting on the spare this afternoon and I will be shelling out for a new tire tomorrow.

I guess I should be glad that they did not set it on fire too:-(

Heard the 2nd tower was falling and we were freaked out. The concern about us traveling that day is a whole nother story.

Rioters derive all kinds of benefit from it...attention, feelings of adequacy...and the assholes funding/controlling see it as a useful political tool. There's been nearly zero consequences for the rioting. It'll continue. "Rioting season" in America will become like "fighting season" in Afghanistan.

I was at the MBDA Rome facility, meeting for a NATO contract i was deputy PM for. Went out for a break to call Smash and was on the phone whenthe first plane hit. Was still on the phone when the second one hit.

Went from Rome, the next day to The Hague for a customer meeting. Was looking for a berth on U.S. flagged freighter to get home, or spending the next several weeks at the MBDA facility in Bristol, U.K. when flights home opened up again.

Had to travel internationally over the next 24 months. Never. AGAIN.

279 A prominent radical in Portland is all upset because:

our local cops thrice knocked over my sixty-four year old father. Hit him in the face with a baton, too.

A picture of his father is included - he does have a welt on his nose.

Let's recap:

The Portland police declared a riot in downtown Portland at 1 AM, announced that downtown was closed, and people needed to move to the west, out of downtown. This was all announced over a very loud PA system installed on a squad car.

As always, the Portland cops waited several minutes to give people a chance to disperse before starting to move on the crowd.

So sixty-four-year-old daddy ignored the announcement of a riot at 1 AM, ignored the order to disperse, and got smacked on the schnozz as a result.

Nope, my GAF meter is still pegged at zero.

I remember many years ago, maybe '82, or '83, I got a gig to go do some geological mapping and soil sampling up north of LaRonge, Saskatchewan. It was just before Christmas, but the snow hadn't set in yet. I jumped in my POS '73 Datsun pickup, and set off. The engine blew in Saskatoon. No time to fix the truck, I parked it with a friend there, and rented a late-model Nissan from the dealer, and carried on. Got the job done (fell through the ice on a lake once, but shallow water), and made it back to Saskatoon, and turned in the rental. Found a POS rusty Datsun 710 hatchback, with a strong engine, bought it for a C-note, and drove it back to Calgary.

Drove the 710 to Vancouver for Christmas. Went to a ritzy restaurant on Granville Island with my sis and her family, and the parking valet refused to park it. He claimed he couldn't drive standard shift.

I drove the heap back to Calgary, and the engine never missed a beat. A week later, I got a friend, and a towbar, and went to Saskatoon, and fetched the dead Datsun pickup back, and transplanted the engine from the 710 into it. later sold that truck for a good dollar, too.

You're smart, tough, tenacious, funny as hell (chicks dig it), I'd say well put together and good looking enough (no homo!) to attract your share of the does in season.

Couple that with your education and the status your title brings, you are now what they call "a Catch".

MILFs & Soccer Moms everywhere would kill to have you, if only they knew you were there.

Y'all 'ettes are far better set to give Insomniac advice as how to raise his visibility to y'all's sisterhood, so with that, I'll just hit this here "poast" button.

332 I had a thought today that depressed me.

I don't think the rioting will ever end.

I dont know how to shake that thought, either.

.......

Faith, the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

It sounds weird, but I come here many times to reaffirm it.

As it turns out, most people think like you and they despair like you and they don't know what to do to bring about their vision for the reality. But they are doers and want more than anything to make it happen.

And in times of turmoil, they feel hopeless and helpless because like you because problems are meant to be solved.

So the world may rip at your hope, but never ever ever let them rip at your faith.

You may or may not be a person of faith. But I'll tell you this, the Biblical history recounted demonstrates God is no big hurry on our terms. His timeline is different.

Perhaps that is a depressing thought. To me it is uplifting. I may depart this life without ever seeing an end to turmoil, or at least in its current state.

But I fully understand the present turmoil is not the first or the worst and I am also secure that as much as I desire justice now, justice will eventually reign and when it does, it will reign eternally.

The enemy loses. The good guys win. We are just in the movie. Are we the bit actors that croak early on or are we the main protagonist, that we do not know. But we know we win.

Pure Marxist immiseration, brought to you by gutless wonders who got where they are by being part of the in group.
Either the hope is for the anguished masses to turn to a strong horse for rescue (Russia and Germany), or for the ruling cliques to surrender to the mob (France and South Africa)

The chances that Wheeler, for example, is being held to his current path by threats of exposure for whatever crimes he has committed is pretty high.

Neil Goldschmidt (spit) is the prior example of this.

We want the problem solved, we want the good guys to win. But, life in its messiness doesn't always allow that or allow us to see that, so we have to walk in faith and hope that God will make things right in the end.

LOL. The person running against Wheeler in the runoff election in November is a crazed pro-Antifa harridan, who, if elected, will pull the cops off of the riot line, and let downtown Portland burn. She really, really, hates the cops.

The only reason she's in the runoff is that the Portland city council, in an utterly stupid move, passed a law saying that political contributions up to $250 will be matched 7-1 by the taxpayers. So, she gets to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on her campaign, 85% of which is being provided by the taxpayers. Talk about compelled political speech.

It's all TDS and cop hate. Rebelling against mommy and daddy.
Even usually quiet Seattle has seen a huge uptick in homicides by gun and knife. Outside and away from the riots.
The casualty toll gets published and then memory holed by the local news. The paper never mentions it. It's all flu manchu or TDS or the peaceful protests including one projectile which blew an 8" hole in the exterior wall of the East Precinct.

424 397 Might help if I got back to church. My cynicism and fear keeps me from going, sure that any church I find will be preaching something besides the Word.

......

Okay, I'll preface this with "I'm about the last person anyone ever should take advice from",
and I'm entirely sure the COBs and the regulars will back me up on that.

With that said, two thoughts:

1. The fear of a thing is worse than the thing itself.

2. Perhaps investigate small places. In my experience, I found it was the floundering church that was still preaching the word.

Okay three things, and you know yourself and your personality, but consider, just maybe, just possibly,
that the Lord has a message to send to the church that does not preach the word and He has selected you to deliver it to a Pastor or a congregation that is in err.

I'm not suggesting you are a prophet, but I am suggesting that the prophets were not the cool kids or late night infomercial salesman.

If not treated, the word "blind" was tossed out at the clinic Friday afternoon. Spent Saturday morning at an eye doc and she is sending me to the specialist tomorrow pronto. I think the dirty secret is, with those "non-profit" foundations, is that based, successful people avoid the work, because it is mostly worthless drudgery, and so it falls to committed leftists to take on the foundation jobs for the graft involved.

Solution? All charitable foundations should have a sunset provision, and must wind up their work, and disperse their endowment 20 years after the death of their founder.

Well. I am 3 degrees away from both George W. Bush, and Osama bin Laden. I shook hands with the president of Halliburton Canada, when Dick Cheney was boss in the USA, and I know he shook hands with Cheney.

And I shook hands with a friend of mine, who is something of a world traveler, and he said, "Congratulations! You are now 3 degrees away from Osama bin Laden, cause I shook hands with a guy in India who had met him."

Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at July 27, 2020 01:11 AM (hbiWb)

I don't know the degrees. But I got to shake hands with GHWB, in 1983 at the Ft. Worth Convention Center, where I was the 2nd youngest delegate at the Texas Republican Convention, leading to the '84 Reagan/Bush re-election.

Sometime, I might write of the Deep State which was evident, even then.

474 Evenin' all...

Well, been down here in San Diego for about 1.5 months. Been trying to drum up business (home inspections), which is tough under normal circumstances, but nary impossible during the WuFlu hysteria. Been driving all over, visiting real estate offices, most of which are closed. I've also joined the local association of realtors, and last week I sat in on their virtual "tours", to introduce myself...

Aside from one job at the end of June, which was for a client of one of my agents up north, I haven't gotten a nibble... until yesterday, when a local agent called me for an inspection, scheduled for tomorrow. Hopefully, it'll result in more inspections for the same agency, and word-of-mouth will grow from there.

We're not yet hurting financially. We've got savings, Average Wife's salary, and we just got a small inheritance from my dad who passed away in June. Plus we've got a moderate income from renting our house out up north. But, business has to really grow if we're gonna make it down here, so...

...prayers appreciated. Thanks...

I have a friend who does that in WA state.

Last week I asked..how are things?

He said that in Spokane, about the same...but he is going to Seattle a lot.

Why?

People are at least thinking about selling. Apparently WA state law requires prospective seller to have the inspections done.

No such law in CA, but the history of litigation in CA makes pre-sale inspections a no-brainer...At least in the Bay Area where I worked for the last 16 years. Here in the SD area, it seems like a lot more sellers forego the listing inspection and leave it to the buyers (caveat emptor & all that). It seems like a lot of inspectors down here also offer verbal-only inspection "reports", which is unheard of up north. Needless to say, I won't be offering those.

483 Still too much sky light to see the comet, but it's a nice, clear night, at least.

I got a shitload of stuff done today. Have a guy who wants to buy two old Studebaker truck cabs off me, so I moved parts all day. Smaller ones on the golf cart, bigger ones with the tractor and loader.

One cab is still on the chassis, and it was piled high with steel: car bumpers, structural steel pipe, tubing, flat bar, angle, and channel. Plus car bumpers, axles. springs, some old hydraulic cylinders, you name it. Literally several tons of it. Picked that all off, and threw it on the ground. By hand.

Dragged the chassis out to an open area, so I can unbolt the cab from it.

Broke up four old rotten pallets, and burned them in the burn barrel. Moved the stuff on the pallets to other storage sites.

Mowed a quarter of the yard.

I am bushed.

And no hoods, and no center grilles. You sort of need those to build a truck. A clever fabricator could make a center grille from the bars in the extra side grilles. The bars are the same width and profile. But a hood is a big hunk of metal.

Here in Kneehill County, I don't even need a burn permit for the burn barrel, because it is an "enclosed fire". If I want to open burn, which I did a couple of months ago, I can go on line to the county's site, fill out a form, and get a printable permit e-mailed back in a few minutes (unless there is a fire ban on).

My current burn barrel is a heavy-weight 55 gallon barrel, with three old brake shoes welded to the bottom rim to act as legs, and some scraps of rebar welded criss-cross across the bottom to act as a grate. It burns pretty clean because that ensures good draft.

Heh! Thanks for the vote of confidence. I started my old Panhard today, and backed it up the new ramp into the shop and onto the hoist. But not before fixing the main battery switch. The car has a cable-operated switch on the firewall to interrupt the ground to the battery. Good idea. All cars should have one, to shut down all electrics in the event of a wreck, or if one has a mysterious problem resulting in the battery going dead overnight.

But being French, they didn't do it straightforward. Oh, no, that would have been too easy. The switch has a lever, pulled by a cable leading to a knob on the dash. Each pull of the cable ratchets a wheel a quarter-turn. It works exactly like one of those old pull-chain light sockets: pull once, light comes on, pull again, light goes off.

With a pull knob in the dash, one sort of expects the "pull" to do one action, and the "push" to reverse it. E.G. hood latch. No, this thing, you pull once to disconnect the battery, and pull again to reconnect it. There is a spring to retract the pull knob, and it probably would, if the cable were properly lubricated.

Now that I have if figured out (by dint of taking it all apart), its operation is a no-brainer. But you just don't expect that sort of thing. It is un-carlike.

But no one will ever manage to steal this thing. heh.

True enough, although the knob is marked "battery earth". I figured, upon initially seeing it, "hmmm, pull out to break the circuit, push in to reconnect." Nope, full stroke out to disconnect, push all the way in, and full stroke out to reconnect. Takes a full 90-degree swing on the lever for the ratchet to catch a tooth. Imagine a ratchet-handle for a socket wrench with only four teeth.

And the four-speed transmission on the column would baffle most Millennials, too. Feels like stirring under-done spaghetti in a pot with a fork, it does.

This is true. There is a gadget you can buy, called a "Green Knob" that is a battery terminal with, wait for it, a green knob on it, that can spin a couple of turns to the left to break the circuit. They cost a few dollars. But lead-acid batteries have a self-discharge rate that is temperature-dependent, and may amount to more than a "few milliamps". I learned the hard way not to leave a battery in my car in Arizona over the summer. by Fall, it will be dead and sulphated, and good only for scrap.

583 To me, Gary Hart has the biggest self-beclowning in American political history. Seriously, Gary? How does someone so cavalier like that get so far in life? The dude was going to win the 1988 Democrat nomination. Who knows what would've happened, but just as sure as the Giants beat the Dodgers tonight to split on the road 2-2, Hart was certainly a stronger candidate than Michael Dukakis. And you know what truly sank his campaign? The name of the f*cking boat, not the deed itself!

If you're a politician and you do something wrong, you never go full entertainment value while doing so. Never go full entertainment.

It was wrong ("scandal!" - dopamine); it was salacious ("sex scandal!!" - lots of dopamine); and it was the f*cking funniest thing on the news that entire political season -- it was gut-busting hilarious and everyone knew it ("hilarious political sex scandal!!!" - SO MUCH DOPAMINE that all anyone will ever remember Gary Hart for is that he was the centrist (198 Democrat who probably would have won the election of 1988 and become President of the United States but instead withdrew from the race during the primaries when he was caught, on film, cheating on his wife with a supermodel, after he denied having an affair with her, after he invited the press to follow him around, and after he was caught in the act on a boat named "Monkey Business".

598 The greatest throw in baseball? Easy peasy. I saw it. We were sitting in the nosebleed section up high down the third base line in San Diego. The poodles were playing the Atlanta Braves (Back when there were only two divisions). The was a Brave on third base and a long fly ball was hit to right field. Dave Winfrey caught the ball at the warning track. The Brave took off heading for home plate.

Dave through a one bounce strike to the plate to nail the runner.

Nobody tested him that way for a while after that.

603 I thought Winfield's throw in Toronto, beaning a seagull, was one of baseball's greatest outfield throws.

In a game in Exhibition Stadium Dave Winfield threw a ball that hit and killed a seagull.

It sounds like the setup for a joke.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Winfield, after warming up between innings, threw the ball he was using back towards the dugout and hit a seagull, killing it.

If you are old enough to remember Exhibition Stadium, you will remember that seagulls liked the place.

There was a fair bit of debate over whether he did it on purpose or not. I always thought that it was possible he threw at the bird, but figured it would see it and fly off. I'm pretty sure he never figured he would hit it. That would take pretty good aim, even if it didn't move. He was about 80 feet away from the bird when he threw the ball.

His manager, Billy Martin, said "That's the first time Winfield's hit the cutoff man all year."

I distinctly remember thinking that it was probably a Cesna or some little plane and there'd be replays all day; I was staying in bed as long as possible. Then the second plane hit and I thought it would be a good idea to get up. Going into work was eerie and I even had a medical appointment that afternoon that went ahead. Absolutely. And there are videos out there; I just looked.

Two others I'd have liked to see:

Yaz's throw in the 1978 playoff (the Bucky Dent game). As it was Fenway, it may not have been that long, but it was a great play.

The other has no film, but according to his contemporaries, Bob Meusal in the 1920s had the best arm of anyone. At home he played left, because it was the sun field, and 460 feet. In most road parks he played right. Would love to see it, but alas.

I hate the blow to actual science* that this type of behavior deals.

People are scared to death of the virus, wearing masks, quitting their jobs, macing and shooting people who aren't wearing masks...

And then more and more people get the virus and either don't know they have it or it's similar to a chest cold, and they trust science less and less. Not the party pushing the bullsh*t or the Democrats shutting the economy down, but science itself.

We're headed for a new dark age.

710 And Ripley - when you sell, do not ask me to pack. Movers come at 8:30 today. I've packed my last box.

I desperately; want to get farther out of he city. I found a great house but can't buy until I sell the other. I don't want to be around here after November elections. I may slash the price.

716 Home sales are behaving oddly right now.

Some folk are reporting a stalled sales environment.

Others, including two Real Estate friends in different states are reporting sales through the roof.

717 We're a long way from the days when, on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Rob buys a new sports car. We never actually see the car, just hear about it. No actual brand name is given, it's just called The Tarantula (a play on the Fiat Spyder, I guess).

I don't even really mind the subtle ones like that. Products can define characters. Craftsmen tools but a clean garage vs snap-on tools that the guy can never seem to find, etc.

I just hate that it's everywhere now. The moment I realized TV and movies were f*cked was when BMW introduced their new-model sh*tty little 140hp 4 cylinder Z3 as James Bond's car.

718 It appears the FBI interview of Igor Danchenko was to coach him on what to say to make the dossier more believable.

So FBI A was telling him what to say to FBI B and congress.

I went to a granduation party on Friday. Not a mask in sight probably 100 people, many sitting at bar side by side. Went out to eat yesterday in a packed restaurant, again no masks except for the waiters. If people knew how normal it is here I am afraid our state would gain population quickly!

I had heard that going in, hopeful I could get a quick sale. Relatively few houses on the market and prices are steady. However I think the second wave has people spooked. I'm seeing a lot of auctions and foreclosures listed recently too.

727 The real estate salesman in Seattle says sales are red hot outside the city, mostly in the Bellevue area. That's were Amazon is moving many of their employees. They are supposedly building a 40 story office tower.
I hope they abandon Seattle totally, but they probably won't.

Meanwhile, here in Ohio Mask Mania has kicked into high gear. Masks everywhere I go, inside and outside. People here seem to have slid so very comfortably into Gov. DeWinemom's mandatory mask order. Frightening.

A Gantt chart is a task, resource, dependency scheduling chart.

It's a project managers indispensable tool, it's also how I conceive the world.

Tasks and time.

And we are quickly running out of time.

740 I got to meet and spend some time with Emmylou last year when she presented at an awards gala for another of her peers. She's every bit as sweet and gracious as her voice.

Posters, posters, posters...I had Evel Knievel, Jerry West and Wilt Chamberlain during the 'tweener years. Then, I discovered prog rock. More specifically, Yes.

741 Carrie Underwood's performance at the Country Music Awards is in my opinion the greatest performance ever at an awards show. That woman's voice is nothing short of awesome. Seeing the crowd of country music's best entertainers look amazed was something to behold. It's my neighbors favorite song whether they like it or not.
