45 Painting of a traffic jam in London.

Posted by: dantesed at July 28, 2020 09:42 AM (88xKn)

46 I like Briton Riviere's paintings. He really captures the look of animals and often their emotional state. (Look at some of the works on his Wiki page.) In this one he gets the dog's surprise/wariness on the busy street perfectly. And I like the way he blurs the background as it recedes, keeping the attention on the more detailed carriages and horses and the dog's expression. It's an effective technique.

Gotta pick up the pup from the groomer. Be back later.

122 CBD,

I have an artist suggestion for you: Thomas Eakins, American, flourished the mid- to late 1800s. Portrait painter, but so honest and detailed that sometimes his subjects refused to pay for the painting, or bought it and burned it (!). His background was in science, and for a time he considered becoming a surgeon. Anatomy stayed an interest for him throughout his life.

Yeah, some rural carriers do that. The Grumman mail buggies you see in cities and suburbs don't do well on rough roads, snow, mud, and so on.

I think they use some kind of linkage to get the pedals over on the passenger side, but usually steer with one hand reaching across to the driver's side.

So, I was tempted with fear about being accosted by grocery worker, like I was yesterday, about the face diaper (as I wrote below in MR). I prayer about it before leaving, and the Lord gives wisdom to those who ask.

We get produce scraps from the local grocery for our chickens. I go there four times a week to pick it up. The Lord gave me the idea of calling the produce manager (it pays to be on friendly terms...) and explaining what happened yesterday. I said I didn't want to offend people, or cause a scene, so...could I pick up the produce at the dock, instead of coming in the store? Perfect solution. (The manager also wantedto know if it was one if his people that accosted me. It wan't, and he was glad to hear it.)

Thank you, dear Lord.

227 Y'all remember Kirsty MacColl, the 80s British singer probably best known on these shores as the female voice on 'Fairytale of New York"?

Just reading about her tragic death years ago. She was pretty much straight-up murdered when a Mexican playboy ran over her in his boat while she and her family were swimming in a no-boating area, and the MF'er walked away with a tiny fine. Even paid one of his employees off to take the blame (he walked too.)

Really messed up. She died pushing one of her sons out of the way of the boat. (She was married to the famous producer Steve Lillywhite.)

Loved her voice. She sang the hell out of everything from torch songs to new wave to pop to, well, pretty much anything.

4. When they say "dictatorship," what do they mean? Can they elaborate on what that will look like and how it will be enacted? Does he plan to rule until death, appointing successors? Do they believe 330,000,000 people will go along with that? If so, why?

A lot more water is heading towards the dam. If the buildup of water from that dam caused the earth's rotation to change, makes you wonder what would happen when that dam gives way.

The dam may survive, but it sounds like there is a lot of downstream flooding that is occurring ... and probably upstream too. The dam may be saved but at the cost of a lot of spillover. From a humanity perspective, many are going to be (are currently being) harmed one way or another. Both options are probably bad. From a communist perspective, better to have the dam survive even if it costs more lives.

3. None; his actions toward dictatorship are woefully inadequate.

4. They mean Trump in the KISS boots on a chariot bedecked in skulls spraypainted gold rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue with a stinking, wailing mob of shackled prisoners in his wake.

I had to change out bathtub valves a number of years ago, so I went at them from the back of the wall, on the landing inside my back door. Posted by: rickb223 at July 28, 2020 10:52 AM (dhqL5)

...

Dams are actually pretty interesting engineering problems.

Hoover gets some arching effect and therefore bears on the walls of the canyon either side.

But 3 gorges has to be some sort of gravity dam; you resist the weight of the water entirely with the mass of the dam itself. They don't necessarily sit on bedrock but the soil mechanics of a shear failure under the dam have to be done just right. It's pretty much the same failure as when the sides of a highway embankment give way--a sort of lens-shaped chunk of soil rotates free and slides out.

Those pictures of the dam distorting probably aren't the actual shape of the dam. It's not elastic enough to deform that way over short distances--it would have just completely cracked through.

Interesting story: The Aswan Dam is filled with derelict Soviet earth-moving equipment. During construction of the dam, when Soviet vehicles would fail, lack of parts interchangeability/service packages made simply ordering another vehicle more efficient(?) than repairing the defective equipment--which was then abruptly shoved into the dam as fill.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to identify a primary care physician that would be willing to "remotely" prescribe HCQ+Zinc Sulfate+Azithromycin on an outpatient basis soon after confirmation of Covid?
I had a conversation with my primary care physician, who initially gave me the "oh, we don't do that anymore" answer regarding that treatment course. After an email exchange in which I sent him links to relevant studies he agreed to at least keep the option open in the event I get the Wuhan Flu someday. So that's progress I guess, but I would prefer something more definitive.
I've already lost one relative to the virus and have seen how fast it can progress after initially seeming benign. You don't want to be starting the debate with your doctor when your symptoms suddenly worsen...

The crop loss is a catastrophe in its own right, but a catastrophic dam failure would be Biblical in proportion.

The dam accounts for 1/9 of China's power generation, and powers a lot of their industrial heartland... which is downstream of it, from what I've read.

Hundreds of millions of people would be killed, injured, or displaced. Massive amounts of manufacturing capability would be damaged or lost.

It would end China's superpower dreams for decades.
