Doggehs and the earth's magnetic field.

A team of researchers from Czech University of Life Sciences, Virginia Tech and Barry University has found evidence that suggests dogs may use Earth's magnetic field as a navigational aid. In their paper in the eLife Sciences initiative, the group describes their study of dog navigation and what they learned from it.

Meet The PetMorons

20200307_142555.jpg

Here is a pic of a recent addition to the Penfold household. We rescued her from a local shelter right before covid shut everything down. She is pitt-boxer mix who had been abandoned in an apartment, extracted by the police in the precinct my friend is the CO. She is housebroken and knows sit. She is slightly bigger than we expected (she went into the shelter at 42 pounds or so and she is now about 55 pounds) and is between 4-5 years old. She has gained some weight since joining us, but generally good natured and not food aggressive, and barks loudly at strangers. She does not like squirrels. She she is strong and protective.

Moron dogs don't like squirrels. Good doggeh. Congrats on your new addition. She sounds like a wonderful addition. Here's to many happy years!

BoCo is a 3 year old border collie we adopted rescue. This is him 1/2 after I gave him a nice bath.

He’s an amazing pup, I can’t figure out why 2 other families returned him.

He and I do long mountain bike rides several times a week.

What a handsome dog doing what clean doggehs do. So happy you found a buddy to enjoy your hobbies with you. Thanks for your contribution.

July 4 2020.jpg

Hello,

I'm a lurker and occasional posters (Pimp Daddy Welfare) that wants to share pictures of my cat, Eric. He passed away this morning on the way to the vet at the age of 19 years. I've had him since he was 8 weeks old and he outlasted my marriage by 7 years. He was one of many pets in my house and the last 7 years he was the only one. He loved fried chicken from Safeway, hamburger patties and cheese from MRE's! He always reminded me who was the boss here... and I made sure that there was a roof over his head, plenty of treats and time every day to love on him.

I think he passed away to save me the pain and heartache of going to the vet... his way of telling me that he loved me. I'll miss my little Tabby friend... and hope to see him when the time is right.

Damn, sorry to hear about Eric's passing. He certainly had a long and happy life there at your place. Good chow to boot. Thanks for sharing, we know it's tough.

Enjoy reading your posts and seeing the various pets, especially cats. I never had one I thought worth sharing until this week when our boy Tyrod - named for Tyrod Taylor who our son went to Virginia Tech with - discovered a lizard in our back yard. Most of the time they run from him and only occasionally does he catch one, but he always ends up losing them so we never need to worry about the trauma of decapitated reptiles.

Anyway, this one decided to stand his ground as you see. Maybe because he had already lost his tail he decided He. Just. Wasn’t. Going. To. Take. It. Anymore. Tyrod sniffed him but decided to move along. - Patrick

Quite the shot. Amazing you got the stare down in pixel form. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the compliments.

Thank you for your contributions today. Once again The Horde displays big hearts for God's creatures.

28 Having relocated to ABQ, I'm now ready for a pet. My BIL offered to give me a letter to bypass the Huge fees the apartment complex requires for a pet. He works at the VA and has that ability. I appreciated the offer but, this is one of my pet peaves. Service animals are so important to so many that need them, but support animals are just being abused to the point that it's stupid. Most are using it to just bring their pet with them everywhere, and I don't believe that they should. Your thoughts are welcome, I think I'll get an aquarium.

31 That link about the dogs "using" the Earth's magnetic field to orient themselves doesn't seem to be very convincing.

They talked about dogs "running back and forth north-south" before commencing to return. That is basically meaningless, unless "north-south" is properly defined. Is their activity aligned with magnetic north, or geographic north? The two can differ greatly. It's almost as if the "researchers" had never heard of magnetic declination.

I love the cats on the steps. It's a cool photo. And, the captions make it funny. My cat's an actual "rescue." I found her trapped in a tree by an old girlfriend's house, so I climbed over the deck rail and kidnapped her because she's a beautiful orange bobtail.

She definitely owns me. I'll wake up in the middle of the night with one of those issues she's working through... namely - needing water from the glass on the night table. So she'll growl and threaten my face with her claws, until I go back to sleep thirsty. She firmly believes that the glasses belong to her until her tongue can't reach the surface of the water.

Finished scrubbing down the pens in the kennel. Over the course of a month or so the dirt, spilled food, shed hair and imperfectly cleaned up accidents need cleaning.

So I chase the mutts out of the pen, pull out the floor mats and beds and power wash them, empty and bleach the water buckets, change out the food buckets, sweep, vacuum and wash the floor using a carpet cleaner, let dry, put the beds and mats back and hang the water and food buckets. There are six pens and it takes about three hours. Everyone then gets fresh bones, like every Saturday.

What makes the dogs most nervous? Not the noisy vacuum or the washer. No, it's the broom.

Actually I have watched our dogs go out and do their business and yes they usually align themselves with magnetic North. I have no idea why and they do not do it every single time, but they do it the vast majority of the time.

I read about that phenomenon some years back and have been watching them for quite some time now with that tidbit in the back of my mind.

Granted I don't see them do their business every single time, but when I see them 85%+ of the time the align themselves with magnetic North.

As I said, I have no idea why they do it, but our two dogs do it.

Dodging the apartment complex's cash grab is not an abuse of the service/support animal policy. You're not displacing a real service animal or preventing a needy person from having one. You're simply avoiding an unfair fee that the complex is using for graft over and above their rent -- a probably extortionate amount, if ABQ is anything like Da Swamp here. ("Pet rent" is the latest scam.)

Short answer: Get the letter.

53 Happy to report that our three cats are enduring the summer heat. Finding patches of cool concrete and other shady spots to lazy through the worst of the afternoon. Us, too.

Old Spirit spends a lot of her time in the tall chair out on the porch. When inside, she makes sure to leave large globs of gray hair everywhere. She likes to walk right in front of us, always leading to the food bowls. She's so little and skinny, it's hard to believe she sheds so much, and eats so much, but she always has.

Ony, the Stealth Kitteh, has been great about alerting us when a skink or a frog gets in the house. (Seems to be a big year for reptiles and amphibians around here.) She has a certain mew she uses to say, Hey, Look at this! Usually lets us catch them.* As opposed to mice, which she takes care of.

That pic of Eric the old yellow cat made me a little sad. Looks like an older, maybe bigger, and slightly bedraggled version of my pal Charlie. Like looking at Charlie's future?

Charlie is the one who comes around mewing at first light of day, every day. "Get up!" he says, "JJ has news." Go 'way, Charlie, I say, It's Saturday! He let me sleep an extra hour today. Well, forty minutes.

Anyhoo I'll be sitting in the living with Paisley lying on the floor, usually in the superman position. Then she'll jump up, trot down the hall and come back with a toy for me to engage in play with her.
Her behaviour gives every indication that she had a brain about needing to play and she knew exactly where he toy was. There is some kind of thought process happening.

The late Tatiana the Wonder Siberian not only knew whee her toys were, she remembered them when they were out of sight. I'd play with her with a rattle ball every evening: I'd throw it, she'd give a squeak as she leaped into the air after it, she'd run it down, and carry it back to me in her mouth to continue the game.

One night I was tired. I scooped up her ball and put it in a drawer in the kitchen. Darned if the little demon didn't watch me, then spring atop the trash can and pull at the lower edge of the drawer to get at the ball! She managed to get the drawer open too, and was fishing in it for her toy.

When we first brought my boyhood cat Rusty to the vet, we didn't have a carrier, so we did the pillowcase inside a box. He slashed his way out of that within a block. We carried him back, let him calm down, then popped him into a nylon string sock bag and thence into the box. He couldn't tear his way out of the string bag.

This is a game I work on with Ajax. I'll be sitting, he'll come up and want to play. I will look at him and say 'Get your ball.' He will back up, and get an excited look on his face. He will look around the immediate area, then run off and systematically check every room in the apartment for the ball. He will check under the bed, inside his crate, etc. If he cannot find it, he will come back with a worried expression on his face. Then I remember I picked up the ball to wash it off.

We are working on toy/name recognition. Get your ball, vs get your squeaky ring. Results are spotty.

Will have to pre-medicate with Benadryl and split her vaccinations in the future.

I always heard that it was an instinctual 'beating down the grass' so they could see around themselves while they were pooping- and hence vulnerable. The same reason why, even off a leash, the dog will usually look for you/at you while pooping- they are making sure the pack is keeping watch for threats.

108 I've been busy on Saturday afternoons this summer, so had to catch up on Pet Thread after everyone was on to chess n' dresses.

But I have a story, and a sweet little kitten! I was sitting on a bench outside of work at lunchtime about three weeks ago, and a tiny little black kitten peeked out from under a car, looked at the building, and tore full speed ahead toward it, hitting the door and bouncing off (think birds against windows, it was awful). She shook her head, took off in another direction, and bounced off another door.

Well, that was enough for me--I got up and cornered her and took her in. She cowered behind my computer until it was time to go home. The gals in the office said she looked like a bat, so we named her Wuhan--Wu for short.

She really wasn't even weaned yet, I don't think. She now has her refuge upstairs. The dogs still scare her--they want to play with her soooo bad! But she is adapting, and finding that a good spit n' hiss with a swipe of the paw keeps them a little bit nervous.

So, she literally ran into my life, and what a sweetie she is! I'll try to get a pic to Mis Hum next week.

The late, great "Eric" -- the Red, right?

My cat looks amazingly like that. There aren't many cats in the immediate area, so he has a huge range. His favorite thing is to go out in the fvcking DARK and dart around and pretend he's doing some very important chasing and hiding. My yard is a freaking jungle because my gardener disappeared for the COVID, and the cat loves it.

The late Marie-Antoinette came to live with Linda; one of her classmates had rescued the cat. Probably renamed her for her queenly ways. Well, we found out *years later* that she was actually male! "She" had cryptorchidism, a condition where the testicles don't descend. She was longhaired and black, and so ID'ing her was tough. (The vet Linda had brought Marie to more than once never checked!) It never bothered Marie in the slightest, and we continued with her name and her pronoun. What were we going to call her? "Murray" Antoinette?

To this day I say she was the first gender-fluid cat. Way ahead of her time.

I can see how there might have been some benefit to civil defense drills. Get people used to reacting to a threat as a group, know where safety (shelters) were. Give them an avenue to DO something and feel apart of a struggle that there is not much they can actually do about.

The hiding under desks? Useless. Maybe teach the kids about what structures can be improvised shelters? Concrete buildings or drain culverts. Teach them to think, drill them to do more than just stare at the mushroom cloud during a crisis. Teach them to be Men (even the girls.)

189 I always heard that it was an instinctual 'beating down the grass' so they could see around themselves while they were pooping- and hence vulnerable.

I've heard that they're looking for snakes and such.

Once I was pulling a hose across the lawn when our first, beloved golden retriever saw the hose moving and jumped back a couple of feet.

He'd never seen a snake, AFAIK, so I infer it must have been instinctual.

Posted by: Mr. Scott (Formerly GWS) at July 25, 2020 03:41 PM (JUOKG)

The vet was fairly positive, she has had a couple of litters, the vet and I suspect someone had her pump out a bunch of litters to make some money and then abandoned her when they left the apartment and skipped out on rent.

She is very protective. She barks at every delivery person, she scared the piss out of the burger guy last night because it is a big loud bark. She also likes to give hugs. The squirrels thus far have eluded her, but she can get jump and get her head 6' above ground. If she is really excited her tail whips around in fast circles, I have never had a dog that wagged her tail like that.

Again thanks I hope everyone here is safe and healthy.
