Lil' Help? I've been using the Brave browser for a while now, and I like it quite a lot, however last night it started showing some (not all) websites in “dark” mode. Ace of Spades is fine, but Twitter, Home Depot and Nextdoor are dark. I double checked the settings > appearance tab, and it's set to light. I restarted both the browser and the computer, and it's still doing it. Can anyone help? Also, to update, we will be making the move to Texas the last week of the month. Jim Sunk New Dawn, I sent you an email. (ETA I mean the end of next month. August.)

We are short on modern fast boats for inshore patrol with all the new bells and whistles in radar, sonar and tracking.
But by the time you load all that stuff on AND make it stealthy it's just too big to operate close in.
And what is the point of stealth for a boat? They produce a wake and are revealed in that way. It's not like a sub or even a jet which has all the sky to hide in.
All one needs to do is set a few pickets outside your sally port entrance and watch for wakes. That and netting will detect most ships quite easily. Radar is not needed. Especially with Satellite surveillance.
It was a payoff. And they should never have built as many as they did. But it was a good learning experience. We learned we need to get rid of some Admirals who've actually run a ship.

I have discovered this over time, as a teacher or one that engages in conversation with another, it is largely pointless to try to explain or teach someone that has no interest in listening to anything you have to say.
I took a gig teaching people to bartend a few years back, and it has really shaped my perspective in a lot of ways. Some people I train are eager learners, most are attentive to the point of completion, and a handful over the years have had little desire to hear or learn anything.
Early on, I tended to give extra attention to those that struggled by trying to get them to pay attention and to work extra with them. But I gradually realized that it wasn't my extra effort that was lacking, it was theirs. Worse yet, I sacrificed time with those that were eager learners to focus on those that were not even trying.
I eventually settled on focusing my efforts on those I could help, and letting those that desired failure to fail. To teach those that were most adept and most interested everything I could and letting those that were destined to fail, fail.
I rarely got a complaint out of the failures because they knew why they failed. Intrinsically they knew they failed because they suck.
And that's kind of how it is with discussing politics. If someone has no desire to learn or become enlightened or accept logic and nuance, there is no point in talking to them. Just excuse yourself from the conversation unless you are relatively captive.
Just focus your limited energy on those that can be helped, those eager to learn. Too often we sacrifice limited resources on hopeless causes instead of throwing everything at the few that can be reached where success can be found.
I think Jesus discussed this so long ago when he said "Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you."

Yes. I work at a place that helps people who are willing to make an effort. But some will not budge no matter what, and we have to cut them loose. We have limited time and resources. Then people come after us with, "I thought you were supposed to help!" By help, they mean do everything for them.

One thing they taught in LMET, the 2 week course all Navy instructors take, is you need to lead off with a motivational statement.
EVERY LECTURE. You need them to understand and be motivated as to why they want to learn this.
When I took the course, it was an all Guy class... and my first lecture was on all the things you need to know before you go snow skiing for the first time.
Basic equipment. Binding setttings... that kind of thing.
And my motivational statement? Why they would want to learn this?
Well guys, once you get off the Bunny Hill, Fat Women don't ski.

In WW2 it was KNOWN that the PT boat was pretty much a death trap.
That it would not survive an engagement, BUT we were willing to take those casualties for the CHANCE of doing major damage to a Capital ship.
We would not be able to do that today. We are not willing to sacrifice at all, even if it may mean victory.

I wonder what it must feel like, though, to have spent so much time laser-focused on an adversary that is now, for better or worse, no longer there. He was engaged in battle with UNCW for so long that there had to be a massive let-down when it was all over. Not to mention that I think he truly enjoyed teaching (criminology, if I'm not mistaken). He was never going to get another university to hire him and he is/was still young. It puts me in mind of the concerns expressed re: Sundance in the previous thread. Could the loss of a cause been too much for him to process? I wish he had given himself more time for his future path to reveal itself.

A couple of years ago, I received a specially built piece of equipment on a job site. It was thirty feet long, six feet high and weight several tons. I also received a 120 page document in English and Spanish, listing the design history and usage of the equipment, force calculations for (as near as I could see) every single joint and weld on the piece. It described thread pitches, maximum loads, tolerances, safety factors.
It did not, however, tell me how to fucking install it properly.
These guys get so wrapped up in the math, so tunnel visioned into How Do I DO It Perfectly, that they never stand up and look out the window.
LOOK! Look how small I made the pump package! It's smaller than a shoebox! Good job. Only thing is, you better hope I never have to take the top off because it's put together with Allen keys and two of them are behind this pump body and I need a twelve inch 12mm Allen to fucking get in there.

He is the lead singer for Foo Fighters, does play guitar, but it should be known that he had the entire first album (CD, release, whatever) recorded in it's entirety in his home studio with him the only musician. He just needed a band around him so he could tour.
He's a pretty talented MoFo.

We took the baby there for her first trip to a restaurant, and the lady wanted to know why her head was so big. Lady YD explained the problem and how it was going to be corrected soon.
This waitress stood there patiently listening and understanding perhaps a third of the words. After Lady YD finished, she said "Oh, I see... she have two brains. Wow!"

Mom and I went to the farmers' market in our local city, which despite being heavily GOP has slapped down a draconian "you will wear masks in all public places or else!!!" order. The market is outdoors obviously, and it was hot today, so I got pissed and said "screw it, I'm not putting on a mask unless someone says something to me." So I went around unmasked the whole time; there were maybe a half-dozen others without one, but no one said anything to me or gave me dirty looks.

Conventions for incumbent presidents are really sort of useless in today's tech age other than to rally, I suppose, the faithful, perhaps rub elbows with the connected, see delegates making an ass of themselves on national TV, etc. All you really need is a vote on an agreed upon platform, make a few speeches on TV and you're done.
The only thing important now is being able to campaign effectively and Covid-19 shut down by blue state governors are designed to prevent the Trump campaign from rally his troops there - that's really why Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania governors are enforcing them so vigorously right now. Biden's campaign cannot use rallies...or even press and donor mixers at this point, since their man is actually drooling into a dixie cup and isn't aware of anything accept he'd like the red Jello now, please nurse.

My late brother lived in the Houston area. I once called him in July or August and he told me that it had been over a hundred degrees for two weeks, with 90 something percent humidity. He didn't feel that he could move back to Michigan because he wouldn't be able to handle the cold.

I have limited experience being a homemaker... In the Obama years, it was a foregone conclusion that all voted for him. They really saw it as Obama is for all the immigrants. The repubs are labeled as "anti-immigrant" so they won't vote for them.
In reality, they want the freedom (no pun intended) to marry according to their customs (i.e. family arranged marriage), then raise the kids here and push for very hard schooling, like the other Asian families. Education is the priority. Many have dual income high tech jobs here.
Are they socialist? Well, the Indian gov is more socialist than ours being that it is a child of Britain. But these families are super hard working. Many return home to family every year for an extended time. The kids are quite Americanized, but in the school system. Back in India, abortion is quite normalized, but family prized.
So it is a mixed bag... who knows..

CLUE: After I got the dishwasher, I had the water pressure regulator replaced and the pressure adjusted from 90 psi (high) to 60 (normal for a house). About a week after that, the dishwasher started its no-water cycles. I've reset it and tried different cycles. No washee.
Any ideas before I get the KitchenAid guy out here? At least it's undder warranty and I have my receipt.

I had an older one do similar. There's a motor at the base that spins and pumps the water that fills the base of the washer. If that motor stops spinning, no water flies. If the solenoid that opens the water inlet dies, no water flies.
Call the warranty repair......

I recall Sunday afternoons being the time to start messing with things that were not quite working right in order to make them work not at all at 10 pm so that for one-two hour blocks over the week everyone would take a stab at failing to make that thing work and then Saturday after a week of frustration it would happen, it would work louder, faster, and stronger than before - and everyone would drink ever more beers in celebration.
Just the way God intended these things to be.

Another clue... which I'm not going to share with the KitchenAid repair person for fear they'll say I've voided the warranty....
I also had my faucet replaced. The faucet was screwed up, and of course the plumber mucked around with lines and whatever under the sink (hey, I posted about that -- remember? Hot water was squirting all over the kitchen floor).
But the dishwashwer worked for a few cycles after that if I'm not mistaken -- although I could be mistaken. And hte plumber came back out and looked under the sink and said everything was hooked up properly.
Oh I wish I was handy.
Anyway, KitchenAid repair is coming next week and it's under warranty. I don't want to tell them about anything other than the regulator.
By the way I mean the regulator for the whole house, not just the appliance. I agree, Miklos, it shouldn't be related. the shower, tub, other sinks aren't dribbling.

So, I took two small off-cuts left over from making it up, and dug a small trench with a hand trowel right under the middle of the piece, and laid one offcut on the bottom of the trench, and jammed the other vertically between that and the stiffener rib, and welded it on place. Fixed that right up. Feels like concrete under foot, now. One little pillar in the right place.
And I got the wood for the decking. 2X8 pressure-treated spruce, 10-footers. $17 each! And lumber is in short supply. Many sawmills shut down due to
WuFlu.

The appliances came with the house when I bought it 5 years ago. The oven ceased to work. Not a big deal since I do not do much baking. One nephew had a job delivering and installing appliances, so he brought over a used oven and took away my old one - free. My dishwasher had just quit. He looked it over and pronounced it dead, not worth fixing.
So for the past 3 1/2 years I have washed dishes by hand because - really? When the fridge or the used oven dies, then I will replace all of those appliances.
And considering I just spent beaucoup bucks to get the central air going, I am in no hurry to replace anything.

Well, they shut down the local hotel, and the one in the next town, due to the barmaids having been exposed to the WuFlu. The one in town was open today, and I asked the barmaid what happened. They both had dealt with a person who was infected, apparently. So the bar owners closed down for a week, the girls got tested, both negative, and are now reopened.

It's probably 80% hard left, maybe higher for the women. A lot are highly "educated" and buy into all the SJW nonsense they internalize at Ivy league/top tier schools just like highly educated white women. My mom had one that lasted 30 years. They only changed it because the kitchen was getting completely remodeled for the second time around and that dishwasher was put in during the first new kitchen, and stayed with the first new kitchen the whole time. I'm pretty sure that was an American one made by hobart. Meanwhile, I went through 3 dishwashers in the last 27 years. The latest is a maytag that I put in 10 years ago or so. Its quiet and works really good. I don't want to say that too loud or else I might end up with dishwasher #4. lol

I would think that there are *some* good new dishwashers, but like many, experience with several kinds of appliances in the last 10-15 years gives me a generally negative view, vs. things made decades ago.

The school opening thing is really sort of a litmus test. The students - and teachers and staff - face no more "danger" than they do every year from flu. Most of these groups face, effectively, zero risk. Literally every closure, or restriction of any kind (including sports, room capacity - ANY of it) is indefensible, and obviously so.
And yet millions of students around the country may be kept out of school. Given the social and economic wreckage this will cause, the lack of a revolt of some kind here might tell us just how far gone the country is.

Saw a jaw-dropping NPR headline (presumably from their website) - about Trump's EO regarding use of illegal alien census data for congressional apportionment. It is to "Protect White Power" - I'm not making this up.
And Frontline, a PBS vehicle, has a "conspiracy theory" episode coming - apparently with the ludicrous claim that Trump (of course!) has "mainstreamed" "conspiracy" theories.

I actually saw a newscaster admit the truth a few days ago. He was saying everyone needs to wear a mask anytime they leave the house. The guy with him was challenging him just a little bit, and newscaster guy says, "It makes me feel better." meaning when others are wearing masks.

Yep. And hey, don't get me wrong. There was a time when I was as guilty as the next guy. I'm a whole lot more libertarian than most here and only nominally conservative.

Trisodiumphosphate, to put phosphate back in the cleaning mix. Get the real deal, not the "phosphate free" TSP (jeebus, how dumb), which is a metasilicate compound.

I grew up under the mistaken assumption that Americans valued freedom, and that tolerance meant you mostly left other people nearly completely alone regardless of their color, creed, sexual orientation, etc.
I don't care about you, and I expect the same courtesy.

Put it in with the diswashing liquid (or pod or whatever you use). Around a 1/4 cup is plenty.
BTW, if you buy it at Lowes, you'll find it in the aisle that has paint and painting supplies (not in the cleaning supplies aisle).

This site recommends 1/2 teaspoon of TSP per load. 1/4 tsp may do. Experiment.
TSP will absorb moisture and get chunky or hard over time, so you may want to bag it in plastic to slow that process.
