Top o morning.
Appreciate some prayers from the Horde. My brother is in the hospital in a medically induced coma and intubated. He has the Covid-19 and it's bad. I have to get tested now because I was in close contact with him at the beginning of the week. Also means I'll miss 14 days of work. I had taken him to get a heart catheterization. But it turned out that he had a bad case of AFib, not blockage. On my way back to Raleigh, I had an episode while driving on I-40. Tooling along at 75 mph and all of a sudden, I got dizzy and felt all weird. Pulled over at the next exit which just happened to have a hospital. They checked me out and sure enough, I have AFib again. Posted by: Traveling Man Who's On The Road Again &&&& at July 25, 2020 09:17 AM (XOyNr) 40

My creaking, rickety laptop precluded me from commenting yesterday. In fact, it's been glitchy all week. Probably another patch.
Had I been able to comment, I was going to suggest that from now on we hit the Never Trumper crowd where it hurts most. No, not personal insults but professional ones. I think they derive perverse pleasure from us making fun of their sexual inadequacies. Instead, we need to deride them for their public faces. Thus David French shall be "Failed First Amendment Lawyer David French." This is because he is most proud of this, but he's done nothing to protect the first amendment. He sues colleges and gets tiny settlements and colleges are still fascist enclaves. Same with Goldberg, who shall be Failed Pundit Jonah Goldberg. Kevin Williamson is Failed Writer Kevin Williamson. Heh, come over here, kid, learn something. You never know, you might have to cook for 20 guys someday. You see, you start with a little bit of oil. Then you fry some garlic. Then you throw in some tomatoes, tomato paste, you fry it; ya make sure it doesn't stick. You get it to boil; you shove in all your sausage and your meatballs; heh...? And a little bit o' wine. An' a little bit o' sugar, and that's my trick.

Speaking of testing, there is word that we will have to be tested for the Hong Kong Flooey before we're allowed back to work.
There is also a rumor that we are being strongly encouraged not to have coffeemakers in our breakrooms. That is not going to go unnoticed. I'd rather be tested than do without coffee. Our breakroom does not have anybody working in it -- at least nobody regular; we have a work-study student who will come in late afternoons. So we can make a case that only one person at a time will be in there making or pouring coffee. Utter nonsense. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at July 25, 2020 09:23 AM (rpbg1) 70

Remember a few Book threads ago, OM put on a picture of the Gladstone Library in the UK. Here is the opening to their Black Lives Matter statement: "At the core of our being, we at Gladstone's Library believe that Black Lives Matter. We also believe that if it is the democratic will, after due process, to remove statues of William Gladstone, our founder, we would not stand in the way." So, if I'm reading this correctly, they would have no problem, if after "due process" was followed, the mob were to dump all the books in the yard, light them up, destroy the building, and dance on the ashes? In some slightly encouraging news, just in time for the weekend festivities in Seattle and Portland, two different federal judges took some small steps to stopping the madness.
In Seattle, the city council had passed an ordinance to no longer allow use by the police of tear gas, rubber bullets, pepper spray and other crowd control devices or tactics. A fed judge said, nope. Not going to let you go that road, This is after the chief of police said that since her officers were denied use of these tools, the officers would no longer risk bodily injury to protect lives and property. In Oregon, a different judge tossed out a demand from the state Attorney General, no less, demanding that all federal officers either depart Portland or, be required to no longer make arrests. A city judge had already banned use by the Portland police of tear gas and other projectiles during protests. The feds are not under that injunction. I guess having the offices of federal judges and US attorney's endangered has clarified some thinking. Posted by: Winston, dreg of society at July 25, 2020 09:45 AM (d9Irc) 140

Funsie fact as a counter to the poll trolling:
When Trump won in 2016, he was behind Hillary in national tracking poll by 2 points. Today Trump is currently behind Biden in the same national tracking poll by... 2 points. Trump's approval rating is one percent better than Obama (49% to 48%) at the same stage in the presidency. I kid you not. We are doubling the size of 2 elementary schools that kids will not be attending.
- This is one of my big pet peeves. There should be no architecture involved beyond the first. Three designs that are easily modified for different terrains and soil conditions, and each design modular and arranged to maximize ease of adding another structure beside it. No atriums, no fountains, and no glorious $5M structures unless they're part of the three designs that are chosen depending on the terrain and soil conditions. I'm of mixed feelings about this. I'm glad that sanity prevailed, but I don't like the idea that the idiots who elected these nitwits won't get the full reward for their idiocy, nor that a judge is, in effect, making law. OTOH, this is an example of the law being enforced when others refuse to, just like in the Jim Crow south. I won't worry about it too much, though. Either way, there is more coffee waiting for me downstairs.

I agree that both cities need to burn. What I've noticed though is the targeting of the riots. They are staying out of the wealthier neighborhoods, where a lot of said rioters are probably from, and destroying downtown areas. I'm a bit surprised, given the Amazon hate that they haven't yet targeted Amazon owned or occupied buildings. Kind of a selective type insurrection. @RichHiggins_DC Anticipated Target Escalation: 1.) Urban targets that have media coverage first. 2.) Rural targets with media blackouts so they can control the narrative. 3.) Churches first in the city. Keep people apart. 4.) Then public transportation to control movement of population. 5.) After thinning out urban police thru continued demoralization ops, they will start hitting police stations or HQ to keep them corralled and increase their own freedom of maneuver. 6.) Possible cyber attacks on stations who rout traffic through a server system. Most big cities and some medium cities do this to connect to first responders via text and alerts. 7.) Utility targets - especially power and telecom. 8.) If this pattern follows true, open violence will begin - utilities normally the trigger. This is not a prediction. This is simply benchmarks to look out for and understand how campaigns like this roll out. Posted by: IrishEi at July 25, 2020 10:37 AM (sGotD) 286

I have an 8 year old grandson, finishing 2nd grade, who had a teacher who made an honest try at doing online learning for April and May. I was with him for a few of those sessions, they tried to do it 2 hours a day. Right off the bat, there were technical problems almost every day, and only half the class ever tried to log in. BUT when it did finally get going, when the Teacher talked the kids (you could see who was on the zoom session by the little live-cam pictures in the sidebar) would look away, or fool with the dog, or the cat, or do whatever, anything except pay attention. So then, what she tried doing was to ask a lot of questions, keep the kids talking so they would be involved, whcih was not a bad idea. BUT how that turned out was that every kid, when they got to talk, just talked about what they had done, what their brother and sister had done, what the dog and cat had done, etc.
And so every "class" turned into 2 hours of kids just b.s.ing with each other, and then teacher would say "okay here's you assignment." Which maybe they would do, or maybe not, because there were no grades anymore. and at the end, everyone got promoted to the next grade, even the ones who never logged in to a single online session. BTW, the teachers unions have been boxed in by liberal governors. If COVID has weakened enough to allow schools to open, all other restrictions have to be lifted.
Thus they have to pretend that we are still in a deadly pandemic, which means schools are out of the question. You can't have schools open and demand mail-only voting for safety reasons. Public schools are collateral damage in their attempt to subvert voting. What will be interesting is if the Post Office announces that it cannot logistically support a national election by mail. Tony Heller (toto on the web) thinks NY has attained herd immunity. Subways and riots/protests probably helped with that, if true.
Opening schools would help the least vulnerable (students and younger/healthy teachers) get mild asymptomatic infections, and complete herd immunity, for the rest of the nation. That said, our district's "return to learn" plan is kids at school, M-Th, 8am to 1pm. Mask required. Option available to have all on-line course if you are afraid to send your kid back to the classroom. Posted by: Swinging for the Downs at July 25, 2020 10:56 AM (O84i1) 337

and an aside as to why everyone uses Zoom, even though it's chinese made and is very suspect - that school district started off trying to use the Microsoft live meeting system. Sounds great on paper - in practice, it never ran for more than 15 minutes without crashing, once it reversed everyones images to negatives, which was really weird, audio would turn on and off at random - yeah after a few tries with that everyone agreed 'oh yeah Zoom it is." What will be interesting is if the Post Office announces that it cannot logistically support a national election by mail. I expect this to be an October Surprise.
I, for one, don't want the election decided by elements within the USPS postal union. There is a reason why, after a dozen Constitutional Amendments made to the original document that no one has decreed that the vote is done through the postal system. The ones pushing for it now are America hating Communists who also want to destroy the Electoral College and expand "voting" to anyone with an internet connection. Posted by: redbanzai the Southerner at July 25, 2020 11:14 AM (nAiE/) There are real points to be made, that Standard American English is just one of many English dialects adopted in this country, and it has no more legitimate basis than any other. The English spoken in New Orleans or the hills of West Virginia or urban black communities... these are dialects. They have rules and in some cases they're more practical than the rules of SAE. However... language's first purpose of course, is communication. I know many intelligent black people who can easily speak with their grandmother in a dialect I'd probably need subtitles for, then go to the office and speak fluent SAE. Could you make the argument that urban black English is as legit as SAE? Of course you can... but are you going to start trying to convert all the rest of us to it? If I started speaking jive, wouldn't that be "cultural appropriation?" What do you want, do you want to be understood? Do you want to understand me? Then let's settle this. Which one isn't. Because you can't have it both ways... unless you don't WANT me to understand you, in which case, carry on. Posted by: BurtTC at July 25, 2020 11:21 AM (hku12) 415

I think there might be instant coffee in the fridge, if so it has to be at least 7 years old.

It's not a so what. It's the whole point of BLM. They are not saying they can't speak SAE. They are saying they are refusing to being forced to comply with white culture. Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 25, 2020 11:27 AM (2DOZq) 424
Of course there's a NOOD.
Time I started to move things around anyways. That's all I do these days is move things around and throw things away. Stay cool. Posted by: Sharon(willow's apprentice) at July 25, 2020 11:30 AM (+mn3h) 425

Good times. Posted by: JackStraw at July 25, 2020 11:24 AM (ZLI7S) It's not really "framing framing" if there is not really a crime that you accuse another of committing. Take homicide for example - kill somebody and tamper with evidence to make it look like somebody else did it. That is framing. But if one merely creates the appearance of 'evidence' that somebody that never existed was 'killed' by somebody. That is not really "framing framing'. - Lawfare You know that is their angle. Posted by: Ridiculous at July 25, 2020 11:32 AM (XAbde) That's what will happen. I'm just saying that BLM doesn't see what Rutgers did as racist. Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 25, 2020 11:34 AM (2DOZq) 428

They were part of the coup attempt. Posted by: JackStraw at July 25, 2020 11:37 AM (ZLI7S) 429

Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 25, 2020 11:27 AM (2DOZq) Which is as stupid and self defeating as refusing to learn in school because it is "acting white". It should not be the job of universities to sooth their hurt feelings... it is the job of any school to give them the tools to succeed in life which includes enforcing proper speech and writing. It very much is a so what if they wish to be successful in a way that does not depend on being born with great athletic ability or the ability to be one of the relative handful of black people who succeed in the music business. Any other type of success requires hard work, education and the ability to communicate clearly. Posted by: redbanzai the Southerner at July 25, 2020 11:38 AM (nAiE/) 430

Angel Heart is a good movie.
It's in that category of creepy good movies that I will never watch a second time along with Skeleton Key and Fallen. Posted by: Grump928(C) at July 25, 2020 12:05 PM (yQpMk) 432

Good times. Posted by: JackStraw at July 25, 2020 11:24 AM (ZLI7S) ~~~~~ Thanks for that link. Lisa Page is terribly upset also. LOL I'm so looking forward to the great reveals and indictments, and I suspect that will happen before Labor Day. Posted by: IrishEi at July 25, 2020 12:08 PM (sGotD) 433
Hey there! This is kind of off topic but I need some advice from
an established blog. Is it very hard to set up your own blog? I'm not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty quick. I'm thinking about making my own but I'm not sure where to begin. Do you have any tips or suggestions? Thanks Posted by: best web hosting sites at August 09, 2020 07:57 PM (8Ikw5) 434
