All of his books are good, and he is quite prolific, so you have a lot of reading ahead of you. Or just watch his interviews, many of which are on YouTube. Posted by: Can't resist temptation It is the progressive mindset. They acknowledge areas they are not expert in and will believe anything a person who is expert and an authority tell them. If their economics professor, who has a PhD in economics tells them that marxism is the way, then they will not question it. *** In many environments you get ahead by mouthing leftist platitudes, so it is no surprise people adopt them as their official talking points, often in pursuit of vocations that require it. For example, if you are a college bureaucrat, your budget is going to be largely determined by how much you convince people to get onboard the woketrain. Finally, liberalism is mentally easy. Why don't we have utopia? Bad actions and bad think by bad people. So...just get rid of the bad people and we can all be rich and healthy and happy! How does someone who is smart become a Marxist or Leftist in the first place. Is it their environment and it takes time for their intellect to reject what they've been taught?
Posted by: Can't resist temptation Old saying: "For every problem there is a solution that is simple, elegant and wrong." Marxist-Leninism is a very simple solution. I'm currently reading State and Revolution by Lenin and he lays it all out. The State exercises power by enforcing class divisions to benefit the 'exploiters' and the rich. When class divisions are removed, the state will be unnecessary and will disappear. Therefore, the proletariat must overthrow the existing state, use their dictatorship to tear down and equalize all classes. Then, this proletarian government will fade away on its own, its purpose fulfilled and government no longer necessary. It's very neat, very compact, and very simple. It's completely wrong, but that's not the point-- it's easy to slogan, easy to explain, easy to reinforce with examples of corruption in government and society. 'Keep it simple, stupid'. Mr. Sowell's writings are also subtly powerful by means of inculcating a baseline of sound logic, objective reasoning and clear, simple parsing to a conjecture, argument and conclusion.
It's how many of life's problems would be best approached, vs. the current left's wild emoting, hair-igniting, shit-flinging, screaming fits. So, not only is an early and frequent exposure to Mr. Sowell's writings useful as to a solid economic grounding, but they're also instructive to the young mind as a useful, powerful framework for further thinking, at large. Much as reading Heinlein's "Youth Series" seems to hard-wire a kid early on as to the benefits of responsibility in a free society. Can you imagine the K-12 curriculum as written by Teh Horde? Our kids from such would SO outpace the product from "competing", inferior efforts such as "Public Schools", aka Infantilazation Institutes. As I explain to my offspring, capitalism and communism are two very different approaches to human interaction.
Under capitalism, people voluntarily exchange goods and services, and over time, through specialization, costs are brought down for these things, and most everyone benefits, though a few benefit immensely. Under communism, the state controls commerce in goods and services through force, and over time, quantity and quality are brought down for these things, and almost everyone is made worse off, though a few top party members benefit immensely. Posted by: Can't resist temptation ---------- Even smart people are swayed by emotion. Think about your strongest political beliefs. They ALL have an emotional component when you scratch the surface. Let me put it this way. If it pisses you off to think of the world deciding on a different policy than the ones you are strongest on, then you are not functioning "intellectually". It's emotional. This goes for Everyone, not just you. So take someone who is naturally envious of others, and feed them a steady diet of Marxism, and they will take to it like butter to hot toast. *** Interesting point to consider within a hundred years of the protest reformation Europe was home to most of the world's superpowers - England, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Habsburgs (Spain/Austria), PLC. One hundred years before the reformation Europe was fighting to keep the Muslims out. And two hundred years after the reformation Europe controlled most of the world. I can't think of a clearer experiment in the history of human cultures. Posted by: 18-1 at July 23, 2020 11:22 AM (qlFIA) 3 of those 6 countries were Catholic, that's not what the word super power means, the battle of Vienna happens later, in 1683, and the Ottomans are one of the top dogs at that point in time. The Reformation and 30 years war can be credited with weakning the Hapsburgs and allowing the Ottomans to make their furthest inroads into Europe(guess which side they supported) but doesn't have much of anything to do with the colonial empires being built. Marxism will work just fine...just as soon as greed is entirely eliminated, every person on the planet is honest and everyone cares more for their fellow man than for themselves...
Wait, come to think of it, under those pre-conditions, every form of government would work just fine. Absent those pre-conditions, Marxism would just be another way to pick one small group of people who have wealth and power over everyone else. And unlike capitalism, the elite under Marxism did not have to accomplish ANYTHING to get to the top. Posted by: JB1000 at July 23, 2020 11:30 AM (Kf5r9) 190

Spain had kicked the muslims out of the Iberian peninsula before the
reformation, and Eastern Central Europe were still fighting off the Turks until 1683. *** In 1417 Granada still controlled southern Spain. The Byzantines screwed themselves with infighting in the 1300s and the last real attempt to save them by the French failed in the 1440s. Ottoman power compared to their European rivals probably reached its zenith in 1529 when Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Vienna. They were still a major power until the late 1600s of course - after 1683 it was all downhill though. That is a little more then 100 years after the reformation, but the Ottomans are special case anyway in that they were partly "European" and partly "Muslim Horde". 26 How does someone who is smart become a Marxist or Leftist in the first place. Is it their environment and it takes time for their intellect to reject what they've been taught?
Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 23, 2020 11:06 AM (2DOZq) Leftism appeals to a person's intellectual and moral conceits. We all want to think ourselves smart and good. A Harvard professor made the crazy claim that the majority of ER admissions for young people are a result of police violence. She wrote this in a New Yorker piece, a magazine that used to be, once upon a time way back when, famous for fact checking.
I see these outlandish claims all the time now, from lefty friends on rape stats in colleges, and income taxes and all sorts of stuff. How can something made out of organic molecules, food, be anything other than organic? All food is organic. It certainly isn't inorganic.

In a sane world, the go-to people for TV news shows and newspapers on the topics of issues affecting Black Americans would be great thinkers like Thomas Sowell, Walter E Williams and Larry Elder.
But there is a reason the media instead has always chosen the likes of race hustlers like Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, etc. Can't let facts, reason and logic get in the way of race-baiting and keeping the Black community ignorant and dependent. Graphic at the link shows: -- Flood Control Limit: 145m -- July 18 6:00pm Height: 163.59m -- Dam Collapse Alert: 175m -- Dam Collapse Threshold: 185m Asia Times: https://bit.ly/2ORYNKV Fan has gone so far as to suggest that the dam and other huge cement barriers being built and planned to span and harness the Yangtze may exacerbate flooding by altering sediment flows in its lower reaches. He also said the dam was designed with "once-every-two-century worst-case flooding" in mind, yet it had already failed to perform its flood regulation role even though the current deluge was far less severe than its worst-case design parameters. Now, after a short respite following the weekend flood, more rainwater has again been flowing in torrents from upstream since Tuesday. The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources' Yangtze River Hydrology Committee and China Three Gorges Group noted that to prevent the dam from overflowing, they had lifted more floodgates to drain water at 37,000 cubic meters per second since Tuesday, after the reservoir's water level increased by more than eight meters in 48 hours to 163.5 meters. The height of the dam is 185 meters. Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 23, 2020 11:52 AM (Do5/p) 354

Understand that when Marx speaks of the elimination of the State, he means the end of monarchs, parliaments, judges, juries, etc., what he calls "the government of men."
But this is to be replaced by "the administration of things" and things will be administered "scientifically" by experts. This sounds great to the modern mind --- until you realize that (1) experts are human sinners and are neither objective nor infallible and (2) that they CANNOT know nearly enough to manage an economy. 26 How does someone who is smart become a Marxist or Leftist in the first place. Is it their environment and it takes time for their intellect to reject what they've been taught?
Posted by: Can't resist temptation at July 23, 2020 11:06 AM (2DOZq) It's easier to get dates posing as a Marxist or Leftist. They aren't thinking with their big brain, but with their lizard brain. Posted by: Darrell Harris at July 23, 2020 12:09 PM (6xA3t) 444
One hundred years before the reformation Europe was fighting to keep the Muslims out.
And two hundred years after the reformation Europe controlled most of the world. I can't think of a clearer experiment in the history of human cultures. Posted by: 18-1 at July 23, 2020 11:22 AM (qlFIA) Post hoc ergo propter hoc Posted by: TheQuietMan at July 23, 2020 12:09 PM (Fcvo8) 445
357- The only thing wrong with Tom Sowell is that he's 90 years old. I wish he was about 45. I want him to be around a lot longer.

That's a morally hard question to answer. The
destruction of the PRC would be a good thing in all probability, but we don't actually know that it would be because we don't know what would come out the other side. And the human cost of destruction in that manner is enormous. Is the death of millions of Chinese slaves and a global industrial catastrophe a reasonable cost? Half-jokingly. My dream in high school (late 70's) was to become the Olympic gold medalist in the decathlon, so Bruce was one of my heroes ... back then.

Seriously, though, this dam stuff isn't good news for the same reason lettuce might cost 17 cents more per head if we don't allow illegals to do whatever they want in our country. We could be looking at laptops and toys that cost up to 12% more if we produce them in the US. Posted by: Charles Darwin - Stop acting white at July 23, 2020 12:05 PM This Three Gorges Dam stuff isn't good news for the simple reason that millions of innocent people could die if the dam collapses. Oh, great. Lady YD is friendly with all the local store managers, so they always give her a heads up on the different shortages, and hold stuff for her. Haven't had any of those problems for awhile, but she's started getting texts from the manager at Dollar Tree that she's seeing a run on hand sanitizer. 337- Not just with black America. Look who the TV news people pick for ANY network interview, even the nominally "right-leaning" FNC.
It's not as if there aren't qualified, thoughtful, interesting Americans to interview on any given topic. But they always invite a bunch of half-witted carnival barkers, dress them up in fancy suits, and then have them shout at each other in one minute segments. In this manner, the cable nets have bequeathed America with its most dismally stupid generation of public intellectuals. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at July 23, 2020 11:50 AM The worst thing I have ever seen is Sean Hannity interviewing Thomas Sowell. He was actually on his show frequently during the Obama years. You could just read the mental processes behind Sowell's eyes- "What the hell am I doing with this nitwit!!" Posted by: Moonbeam at July 23, 2020 12:27 PM (qe5CM) 458

When Thomas Sowell sees a sacred cow all he can think about is turning it into hamburgers. He's destroyed more of the myths that I though were true than anyone else I've read.
