The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

If one can rant about one of our greatest thinkers, here it is. I have been reading Thomas Sowell for a long time, and his careful, rational, logical approach to issues has been of tremendous benefit when faced with the never-ending barrage of obfuscation, manipulation and out-and-out lies that we get from our media.

What makes him even more interesting is that his writing style is comfortable and accessible, and even better, he used to be a Marxist so he knows their arguments better than they do.

Here's a trailer for a new documentary about him.

Thomas Sowell: Common Sense in a Senseless World

Start with "Economic Facts And Fallacies," which is a brutal destruction of the shibboleths of the Left.
Among his chapters are:
Urban Facts and Fallacies
Academic Facts and Fallacies
Racial Facts and Fallacies
Third World Facts and Fallacies

Pretty juicy stuff. All of his books are good, and he is quite prolific, so you have a lot of reading ahead of you.

Or just watch his interviews, many of which are on YouTube.

The pleasure of having some of our culture's lazy axioms carefully dismantled is a rare thing, and he does it better than most. But he is more valuable than that. He is a fine and perceptive observer of the human condition, and he argues persuasively for the economic and other freedoms that we require, and he calls out those who would take them from us.

The illusion of Scientific Marxism, that it has ALL THE ANSWERS, and it is a pitch to the vain atheists who hate religion and Christianity, in general.

There are no pat answers to the problem of human beings living together. But the false science of Marxism claims there is, through their materialist dialectic.

It's all a lie, from stem to stern. But vain, clever people are always being seduced by lies, because they are vain and self-centered.

Two classes of Marxists, leaders and followers. The leaders are smart, cunning and ruthless. They know exactly what they are trying to impose on people and they do it for power.

The followers eat Tide Pods. Pretty easy to get them to follow anything.

It is the progressive mindset. They acknowledge areas they are not expert in and will believe anything a person who is expert and an authority tell them. If their economics professor, who has a PhD in economics tells them that marxism is the way, then they will not question it. They will then tell you that marxism is the way, and you need to follow along because 1, they are smart and believe it (went to harvard, you know) and 2, were taught by Dr. Professor at Harvard, who wrote a book on the subject.

80 How does someone who is smart become a Marxist or Leftist in the first place.

In many environments you get ahead by mouthing leftist platitudes, so it is no surprise people adopt them as their official talking points, often in pursuit of vocations that require it.

For example, if you are a college bureaucrat, your budget is going to be largely determined by how much you convince people to get onboard the woketrain.

Finally, liberalism is mentally easy. Why don't we have utopia? Bad actions and bad think by bad people. So...just get rid of the bad people and we can all be rich and healthy and happy!

Old saying: "For every problem there is a solution that is simple, elegant and wrong."

Marxist-Leninism is a very simple solution. I'm currently reading State and Revolution by Lenin and he lays it all out. The State exercises power by enforcing class divisions to benefit the 'exploiters' and the rich. When class divisions are removed, the state will be unnecessary and will disappear. Therefore, the proletariat must overthrow the existing state, use their dictatorship to tear down and equalize all classes. Then, this proletarian government will fade away on its own, its purpose fulfilled and government no longer necessary.

It's very neat, very compact, and very simple. It's completely wrong, but that's not the point-- it's easy to slogan, easy to explain, easy to reinforce with examples of corruption in government and society. 'Keep it simple, stupid'.

121 Mr. Sowell's writings are also subtly powerful by means of inculcating a baseline of sound logic, objective reasoning and clear, simple parsing to a conjecture, argument and conclusion.

It's how many of life's problems would be best approached, vs. the current left's wild emoting, hair-igniting, shit-flinging, screaming fits.

So, not only is an early and frequent exposure to Mr. Sowell's writings useful as to a solid economic grounding, but they're also instructive to the young mind as a useful, powerful framework for further thinking, at large.

Much as reading Heinlein's "Youth Series" seems to hard-wire a kid early on as to the benefits of responsibility in a free society.

Can you imagine the K-12 curriculum as written by Teh Horde? Our kids from such would SO outpace the product from "competing", inferior efforts such as "Public Schools", aka Infantilazation Institutes.

Interesting point to consider within a hundred years of the protest reformation Europe was home to most of the world's superpowers - England, France, Netherlands, Sweden, Habsburgs (Spain/Austria), PLC.

One hundred years before the reformation Europe was fighting to keep the Muslims out.

And two hundred years after the reformation Europe controlled most of the world.

I can't think of a clearer experiment in the history of human cultures.

Joe is about as charismatic as the soiled diaper he is wearing. I have honestly never seen a presidential campaign decide their best strategy is to hide their candidate and never let him take any unscripted questions.

146 As I explain to my offspring, capitalism and communism are two very different approaches to human interaction.

Under capitalism, people voluntarily exchange goods and services, and over time, through specialization, costs are brought down for these things, and most everyone benefits, though a few benefit immensely.

Under communism, the state controls commerce in goods and services through force, and over time, quantity and quality are brought down for these things, and almost everyone is made worse off, though a few top party members benefit immensely.

She likes universal health care because it's bad that people get sick and die. She wants social programs because people being broke isn't good. She hates racism because racism is bad and hurts people.

Nothing wrong with any of these things, as concepts-- the trouble is they never get into the weeds of *how all this is supposed to work in meatspace*. I'd say it's Underpants Gnome logic, except it's actually worse, because the person never even realizes there's a Step Two they're missing.

Case in point, I was talking with some smart left of center folks. Sikhs came up in discussion and not thinking about it much I mentioned they are required to carry knives because of hundreds of years of Muslims trying to kill them.

Now, I'm a closeted conservative around these people so I was kicking myself....and they were SHOCKED. ISLAM IS A RELIGION OF PEACE But I'll give them credit...they looked it up and saw I was right.

Posted by: Can't resist temptation
----------

Even smart people are swayed by emotion. Think about your strongest political beliefs. They ALL have an emotional component when you scratch the surface.

Let me put it this way. If it pisses you off to think of the world deciding on a different policy than the ones you are strongest on, then you are not functioning "intellectually". It's emotional. This goes for Everyone, not just you.

So take someone who is naturally envious of others, and feed them a steady diet of Marxism, and they will take to it like butter to hot toast.

3 of those 6 countries were Catholic, that's not what the word super power means, the battle of Vienna happens later, in 1683, and the Ottomans are one of the top dogs at that point in time. The Reformation and 30 years war can be credited with weakning the Hapsburgs and allowing the Ottomans to make their furthest inroads into Europe(guess which side they supported) but doesn't have much of anything to do with the colonial empires being built.

Because they do not understand - or refuse to learn about - the fact that socialist systems demand an absence of black markets or subversion of controls. Ottoman power compared to their European rivals probably reached its zenith in 1529 when Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Vienna. They were still a major power until the late 1600s of course - after 1683 it was all downhill though. That is a little more then 100 years after the reformation, but the Ottomans are special case anyway in that they were partly "European" and partly "Muslim Horde".

Leftism appeals to a person's intellectual and moral conceits. We all want to think ourselves smart and good. Leftism tells us "Believe this and you will be applauded for being smart and good."

It requires mental effort to twist truth like leftism does. Smart people experience this effort as proof that they are being smart.

So we're going to destroy it. And why ? Best I can tell - because people can't stand watching other people be free to do as they wish.

I see these outlandish claims all the time now, from lefty friends on rape stats in colleges, and income taxes and all sorts of stuff. It bewilders me that otherwise smart people are so willing now to say (and, I guess, believe) really obviously insane stuff.

296 I watched a doc awhile ago on a problem of recent
monsoons in India that killed their rice crops because the water stayed
around too long. They needed a strain of rice that could survive longer
under water. Western scientists came up with a GMO strain almost
immediately. India rejected it and they ended up taking years to grow
and make hybrids the old school way. In the interim more people starved.

At least it was non-GMO, and therefore more virtuous. Except
hybridizing and cross/selective breeding result in genetic modification.
So people died unnecessarily and they still end up with GMO rice

As I said above, we have been genetically modifying our food for over 6,000 years.

The GMO stuff is what I call the "franken" food scare and it is working on people who should know better.

Franken fish because we fish farm.

Frankeen vegetables because we are genetically modifying corn, etc.

Keep in mind the only thing we are doing differently than we have done for thousands of years is we moved modifying our food sources into labs from the fields and that is what is scaring people.

They didn't seem concerned, but it's China, so they probably wouldn't sound concerned even as the wall of water is making its way towards Shanghai.

never really bounced back after Manzikert in 1071. The Crusader states

Sowell has done at least two appearances on "Uncommon Knowledge" with Peter Robinson. I think he explains how he started as a Marxist. I think it might have something to do with the fact that he came of age in the early 1950s. There were a lot of current-day conservatives who were Marxist at the time. I believe Irving Kristol was one of them.

In case you missed it, he just did an hour-long interview with Mark Levin a couple of weekends ago. I think it was in recognition of his 90th birthday. I taped it but haven't watched yet. He probably touches on the subject there as well.

353 RE: Three Gorges Dam

Graphic at the link shows:
-- Flood Control Limit: 145m
-- July 18 6:00pm Height: 163.59m
-- Dam Collapse Alert: 175m
-- Dam Collapse Threshold: 185m

Asia Times: https://bit.ly/2ORYNKV

Fan has gone so far as to suggest that the dam and other huge cement barriers being built and planned to span and harness the Yangtze may exacerbate flooding by altering sediment flows in its lower reaches.

He also said the dam was designed with "once-every-two-century worst-case flooding" in mind, yet it had already failed to perform its flood regulation role even though the current deluge was far less severe than its worst-case design parameters.

Now, after a short respite following the weekend flood, more rainwater has again been flowing in torrents from upstream since Tuesday.

The Chinese Ministry of Water Resources' Yangtze River Hydrology Committee and China Three Gorges Group noted that to prevent the dam from overflowing, they had lifted more floodgates to drain water at 37,000 cubic meters per second since Tuesday, after the reservoir's water level increased by more than eight meters in 48 hours to 163.5 meters. The height of the dam is 185 meters.

But this is to be replaced by "the administration of things" and things will be administered "scientifically" by experts.

This sounds great to the modern mind --- until you realize that (1) experts are human sinners and are neither objective nor infallible and (2) that they CANNOT know nearly enough to manage an economy.

And of course at some ugly point you also realize that people have become ...... "things."

I never said it was a good plan.

Saw the original reactor at Oak Ridge National Lab. Just a big concrete ring with a dome top. Three sets of holes all around the ring that you got to via scaffold. The scientists would send the techs out there with a list of measurements, and the techs would move the graphic cores in and out with a wooden pole. Wearing nothing but paper hats and aprons.

I bet those boys died just a wee bit early.

That's a morally hard question to answer. The destruction of the PRC would be a good thing in all probability, but we don't actually know that it would be because we don't know what would come out the other side. And the human cost of destruction in that manner is enormous. Is the death of millions of Chinese slaves and a global industrial catastrophe a reasonable cost?

Just to be clear, I was the Ron, but noted that this was simply a claim on a video. I have no idea if it's really true. I also don't believe the satellite photo of the dam, showing extensive displacement and bowing. I think it would have failed by now if that were true.

457 337- Not just with black America. Look who the TV news people pick for ANY network interview, even the nominally "right-leaning" FNC.

It's not as if there aren't qualified, thoughtful, interesting Americans to interview on any given topic.

But they always invite a bunch of half-witted carnival barkers, dress them up in fancy suits, and then have them shout at each other in one minute segments.

In this manner, the cable nets have bequeathed America with its most dismally stupid generation of public intellectuals.
