Beginner Problem - White To Play (1166)

Extra credit if you can find more than one solution

Goal: White can force mate in 3 moves
Hint: Black's back rank is weak

Intermediate Problem - White To Play (1167)

How many mating lines can you find?

Goal: Force mate in 5 moves, maximum
Hint: This is simply brute force on the back rank

Advanced Problem - Black To Play (1134)

Goal: A forced mate in 9
Hint: Not a smothered mated but that motif is present

Problem Solutions

Beginner Problem - White To Play

20200718 - Problem 1.jpg
7k/6p1/2pb1pPp/p1p1q2P/P1P2r2/3Q4/1R4K1/3R4 w - - 0 1

1.Rb8+ Bxb8
2.Qd8+ Qe8
3.Qxe8#

That's the one most everybody sees. But there's also this one.

1...Qe8
2.Rxe8+ Bf8
3.Rxf8#

It's hard to think about throwing your queen away first thing.

Intermediate Problem - White To Play

20200718 - Problem 2.jpg
2br2k1/2r1q2p/2P1p3/pp2Pp2/1p3PBQ/2p3R1/P6P/6RK w - - 0 1

1.Bh5+ Kh8
2.Bf7 Qg5

If 2...Qxh4 then 3.Rg8+ Rxg8 4.Rxg8#

3.Qxg5 Rxf7
4.Qg8+ Rxg8
5.Rxg8#

or 4.Qxd8+ Rf8 5. Qxf8#

Advanced Problem - Black To Play

20200718 - Problem 3.jpg
3q1rk1/5pp1/3p3p/1Q1N3P/2p3P1/R4n1B/rPP5/2K4R b - - 0 1

There may be more lines than these, but they all kind of look similar:

1...Ra1+
2.Rxa1 Qg5+
3.Nf4 Qxf4+
4.Kb1 Nd2+

(and this is where it starts looking smothered)

5.Kc1 Nb3+
6.Kb1 Qc1+
7.Rxc1 Nd2+
8.Ka2

...and White escapes being smothered, but to no avail:

8...Ra8+
9.Qa6 Rxa6#

Here is the line based on the white king going to the other escape square on the third move:

3.Kb1 Nd2+
4.Kc1 Nb3+
5.Kb1 Qc1+
6.Rxc1 Nd2+
7.Ka2 Ra8+
8.Qa4 Rxa4#

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

An utterly brilliant mystery, with the Ellery Queen puzzle for the sake of the puzzle, a fair solution (if you're a genius), and even the EQ trademark of a false solution followed by the true one. Stephen Sondheim and Anthony Perkins must have read EQ stories at some point before they wrote their script.

I first saw it on TV in 1981 or -82. Tuned in to watch Dyan Cannon and Raquel Welch, not expecting it to be a *real* mystery, and then didn't move off the couch for two hours because I was afraid I'd miss something.

Dyan is also a better actress than you might think. Her performance as the clueless wife to Michael Caine in Deathtrap is funny and charming. She can play the dumb blonde, but can play a lot more.

When I saw Jennifer on an episode of 90210 years ago, I immediately said, "Got to be Dyan Cannon's daughter!", the resemblance was so strong.

My sibling informs me that the good college kids of Portland and a bunch of young moms are putting on a peaceful demonstration in support of BLM.
(Duh it was 6PM and still daytime in the burbs.)
Also the Mayor has things totally under control... not to imply that anything was happening that might need to be controlled.... and the Feds are being real A-holes and should quit provoking all the good citizens of the Rose City.
(Amazing what needs to be overlooked when the baby of the family is barely hanging on by the Meds and can't be reasoned with for fear of losing them completely.)

There was also a life-size chess game with people as the pieces, this time at a party given by the villain, in The Man From U.N.C.L.E.'s Season Two opener in 1965, "Alexander the Greater Affair." Rip Torn (much later the boss of the Men in Black) played the villain.

Well, he marched in Selma, and

...he marched in Selma.

And that's pretty much it. And every time I've heard him talk, it always sounded like he was getting ready to march in Selma. Like the following 50 years of civil rights progress never happened. Lewis is like the guy who ran for the winning touchdown in the championship game for his high school football team, and that was the high point of his life, so every time you visit him in the trailer park and have a few beers with him, at some point he will turn to you and say, you know, I ran for the winning touchdown in the championship game for my high school. Every time. He never gets tired of talking about it.

88 An utterly brilliant mystery, with the Ellery Queen puzzle for the sake of the puzzle, a fair solution (if you're a genius), and even the EQ trademark of a false solution followed by the true one.

That's impressive - one time I worked out the math for all female junior golfers in America to be right at 1M at the time, and to be ranked, you had to play at least 4 junior ranked two day PGA tournaments in a single season, and to get into the top 2000 in the nation you needed to play sub-85 golf consistently in those tournaments at 5800 yards or greater - a task that is, to be frank, herculean for any young lady.

Chess is, I think, much harder than golf or lacrosse or the Science Olympiad, etc - so to be ranked in the top 500 must mean someone you would never, ever challenge this lady in a "friendly" match!

158 The incoming FLOTUS chose red-carpet favourite Reem Acra on the eve of Donald’s big day.

Several designers, including Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs and Phillip Lim, revealed they would refuse to dress Melania Trump ahead of her husband’s inauguration as the 45th President of the United States.

However, as this weekend proved, not all labels shied away from dressing the brand-new First Lady, and Trump chose one Middle Eastern designer to round out her Washington-fit wardrobe.

The former model donned a glimmering golden gown by Beirut-born Reem Acra for a dinner with campaign donors the night before her husband’s official start to his four-year term.

With a sweeping fishtail and figure-hugging bodice, the number ensured Trump stole many a headline the next morning.

I'm guessing that the Oregon papers, like the Puget
Sound area papers to the north, have no idea there is an election in about 106 days.

Because they are publishing zero information about it.

This shows how the local press is all Leftie/Dem, ignore a challenger to the Demo incumbent. They are covering for the leftie in power.

Just like in my district, where the completely bought-and-paid-for Adam Smith (D - China) continues to backstab a free America while topping out on his retirement plan.

Among the 36--yes, 36--candidates in the race for governor of Washington State this fall, are these two outstanding men:

DAVID W. BLOMSTROM (prefers Fifth Republic Party): "On the International scene, we need to put an end to our decades-old tirade against China. I view China as a friend. Israel is the enemy. In fact, my book SeaWA Politix is illustrated with photos taken with a Chinese Huawei smartphone, which boasts the best camera(s) of any smartphone."

And this guy, a young Rick Wilson-type with hair. Visit ResetWA.org to see his seriously punchable face.

NATE HERZOG (prefers Pre2016 Republican Party): "As an anti-Trump Republican, I know Washingtonians appreciate a leader who tells it like it is. Many of my fellow Republicans get upset when I say Donald Trump is a phony and an assclown. This year, I backed Senator Amly Klobuchar for President. 2020 will be a depression year: GDP down 10%, DOW below 20,000, 40 million unemployed, and staggering deaths from coronavirus. Visit ResetWA.org to learn my plans."

Jonathan Peter Jackson (June 23, 1953 – August 7, 1970),[1] was a revolutionary[2] who died of gunshot wounds suffered during his armed invasion of a California courthouse. At age 17, Jackson stormed the Marin County Courthose with automatic weapons, kidnapping Superior Court Judge Harold Haley, prosecutor Gary Thomas, and three jurors. Escaping with the hostages, Jackson demanded the Soledad Brothers' immediate release from prison. The Soledad Brothers, a group of African American inmates facing charges for allegedly throwing a white prison guard to his death at San Quentin, included Jackson's elder brother George Jackson. None of the Soledad defendants were at the courthouse on the day of the attack.

373 Speaking of openings, I have noticed that when I do manage to talk to a woman, she always manages to work either the phrase "my boyfriend" or "my husband" into the first sentence she says. I have asked other men if they have noticed the same things, but none of them have. The only thing that I can conclude from that, is that I must be unusually observant.

415 245 LeftCoastDawg, have you received your ballot yet?

Among the 36--yes, 36--candidates in the race for governor of Washington State this fall, are these two outstanding men:
--------------

flygal,

I just picked it out of the mailbox about an hour ago. I'm glancing at it and my initial impressions follow.

Goal: to WIN in November, not make a "statement".

IDK who I am voting for yet, but I remember the Repub disaster when nominating Ellen Craswell about 20 years ago.

Very proper and Christian, but not a politician. And the Repub party at the time was glowing how wonderful a candidate she was.

She was a speedbump. It was like watching your favorite car crash in slow motion, and nothing could be done about it.

I say this to immediately disqualify Tim Eyman. History repeating and all, and morally, Tim is no Ellen.

This year, with Living God Jay Inslee so royally screwing the pooch to everyone not named Gates, Bezos, or Hanouer, there is actually a chance, if we can get a candidate that will appeal to the wine moms of the Eastside and the working folks of South King/Pierce/Snohomish counties and their ilk.

Freed, the Bothell mayor, describes this, IMO. Not that I am saying he is my guy, but so far I think he has the best chance of reaching those groups listed above.

The Republic sheriff, Culp, has gotten zero point zero coverage on the west side of the Cascades, except for the one time that he defied Emperor Inslee's decree.

The local press smeared his good name, the likes of which I haven't seen since Sarah Palin. Then after a few days, nothing. Nada. Nicht. Nyet. Believe that if he qualifies, this will be pounded into the westside voters. And expect Trump's name to be brought up in association, just because.

Herzog says he is an "anti-Trump Republican", so he is a dumb chit that has no sense of what is going on around him. Around here at AoS, we call them #NeverTrumpers. Enough said.

Raul Garcia looks to be an impressive person, but all his experience is being a medical professional. Maybe a legislator, but governor right off the top? I don't see it.

The Republicans in WA state have to read the room correctly, in order to choose the candidate with the best chance of winning.

Those two bozos you highlighted, geesh. It sounds like they are running for Governor of CHOP.

Even in the middle of winter when the rest of Florida can be chilly, Key West is beautiful and in the summer, the wind blows all the time so it is not as hot as the interior. I had a friend with a boat so I never really went to the beach. Itis hwere I first learned to snorkel and developed a life long passion for it.

OK, go to goodwill and other thrift shop and buy decent shirts, full cotton, oxford collar.
Buy decent shoes and good fitting slacks. This is thrift shopping so it will take a bit. Looking good is important. Clothing is a code, you want to look like someone responsible who might wear a tie.

Don't wear white socks with oxford shoes, trust me on this.

in fact, buy a sports coat for those off times you might want to wear it too. Get everything in natural fibers, no polyester. Maybe Viscose or Rayon, but no plastic. Learn how to wear it and be comfortable in it. 3 buttons are the bomb, they look stodgy and respectable.

get some hair style going, look presentable.

Go buy Neil Strauss' book The Game. It will give you some approaches. It isn't creepy unless you decide it is more important than people.
If you want to get on with your life do something, don't sit around hoping things will change. They won't. So it is important that you do something other than sit around on your ass whining and hoping for a miracle, because IF YOU GET A MIRACLE AND DON'T KNOW HOW TO RUN WITH IT YOU MIGHT AS WELL NOT GET A MIRACLE RIGHT?

451 Beginner Problem, Answer #3

1.Qxd6 Qxd6
2.Rxd6
Very limited choices available to Black at this point: best is
... Kg8?
3 Rb8#
Note 2 ... Rf2+ will only delay things one move
as 3. Kxf2, then Black Kg8? (He can only move one pawn and the King at this point).
4.Rb8#
