Shitty abstract art, but at least I can actually see an attempt at an animal, unlike modern art, which sucks that infected donkey dick Insom was talking about earlier.

No, but. The point of the art thread is that a bunch of morons say it's pretty or not pretty. But sometimes y'all get talking about Jesus and Elijah and that sort of context. In this one I immediately felt the War. It's hard to imagine that this was done before it started because of the horror involved. The thing about artists, though, is that sometimes their antennae are more closely tuned to the world than ours. The Expressionists could feel the world ripping apart. Now I'm going to do a Kris thing. Let's read this painting the way you read a page, from left to right. The colors start off primary, the animals are angry, there are streaks of blood. The animal in the middle may be mourning. Everything on the right is rust, devoid of life and color. There is so much going on in this, and no, none of you mopes could have painted it. Fun fact, at one point during the war (he was drafted into the German military cavalry) he put his skills to use creating camouflage tarps for the artillery. He apparently liked to use pointillist styles for those projects, seemed to think one artist's in particular would be very effective against what passed at that time for high-altitude bombing.

Look at what he does with color. For the most part, the palette seems bright, and the colors pure, but they are blended. Not with other colors, but blended with black. The blend isn't gradual either. They go from the near-pure hue to a patch of black. The purity of the colors is manipulated. He then renders the composition in cubism. Earlier Marc was more gentle forms and curvilinear lines/shapes. Here it's jagged and sharp. He using the shattered nature of cubism to create a violent image. He then caps it off with the red streak that shoots through the diagonal center of the work. It hits everything, and everything reacts to it. They shy away or writhe. I can hear this work. It sounds like Clarice's lambs.

By the way... the right side of the painting was damaged during WWII. It did not originally look like that. Think that the colors are similar to the left, and there is a group of foxes over there too.
I'm not sure why it was never fixed. Either to fix it would damage it further, or the curators felt that the damage was now part of the work's story and kept it. Wouldn't be the first time. Given what we've seen of recent "restorations" of classic art, they were wise not to try to repair it. And yes, art should tell a story, on or off the canvas. Another of Marc's works, created around the same time, is called "The Wolves (Balkan War)". It's not as violent as this, but it depicts two packs of enemy wolves fighting each other. Marc used the negative symbolism of wolves to depict both sides as barbaric and the conflict as terrible. The Balkan War was especially violent and practically everyone saw the Balkans as the powder keg for a bigger conflict (which it ended up being), and the Balkan War as its dry run. Even tho no one foresaw how brutal WWI was going to be, there were clues.

Iwonder Posted by: Flyover at July 17, 2020 10:01 AM (Rbu5d) Some of the artists and other sensitives did, as this painting shows. The Elites were giddy with confidence, especially the Ruling Classes - that's why they marched into it all with no second thoughts. In hindsight, one of the most poignant/tragic bits of film to watch are clips of the Funeral of King Edward VII in London, in 1910. It was the most magnificent funeral ever stage, maybe that ever will be staged. At least 10 Kings and Emperors were in attendance, and members of over 70 different Royal Families, and half a million people viewed the procession. Over the top in every possible way - and not a single one of the notables realized that it was THEIR Funeral, the funeral of their families, their nations, their culture. It was all about to be swept away. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 17, 2020 10:14 AM (Kpl3J) 266

Dear Horde,
Expressionism is a Thing. Many artists in many genres felt that the world was coming apart. No, prescient does not mean that they knew a Serbian hippie was going to shoot an Austrian manikin and that the hereditary upper classes of Europe were going to casually toss everyone's babies into an inferno. They did know that something was up. You're all seen Munch's "Scream", even if only as a Halloween mask. That's 1898. Posted by: Bandersnatch at July 17, 2020 10:15 AM (gd9RK) 276

It didn't, but it did guarantee that all of the parishes below them were annihilated. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 17, 2020 10:29 AM (Kpl3J) 365
Peace
Now, God be thanked who has matched us with his hour, And caught our youth, and wakened us from sleeping! With hand made sure, clear eye, and sharpened power, To turn, as swimmers into cleanness leaping, Glad from a world grown old and cold and weary; Leave the sick hearts that honor could not move, And half-men, and their dirty songs and dreary, And all the little emptiness of love! Oh! we, who have known shame, we have found release there, Where there's no ill, no grief, but sleep has mending, Naught broken save this body, lost but breath; Nothing to shake the laughing heart's long peace there, But only agony, and that has ending; And the worst friend and enemy is but Death Posted by: Rupert Brooke at July 17, 2020 10:29 AM (sdFDW) 366

I hope this includes the Chinese students, but I think that the corporate types want them to keep infiltrating. They are getting a lot of help from the universities. Kid 2 works in DC, has had the staff from the alma mater try to insist there is an obligation to place foreigners in government internships. May the universities who do this burn.
Some kollidges are closing their Confucious Institutes, which is a good thing. They've been a nest of commie infiltration for a long time. It's been interesting to watch the leftards go back and forth trying to decide whether we even have enemies or trying to designate Russia as our biggest threat when it appears that China is the one we should be focused on. And by "interesting" I mean a train wreck of inanity. It's also good that Amash will soon be out of Congress, since he's a big ChiCom booster. DiFi should be targeted by the GOPe for defeat since she had a ChiCom spy in her employ for years, something that PROGDA covers well. With a pillow until it doesn't move. Everyone had a premonition of War, but not of WWI.
, The book The War That Ended Peace dwells on that a bit. The last "big" wars had been the Franco-Prussian and Russo-Japanese Wars; after that, the various crises such as Fashoda or Morocco had looked as though, were arms to be involved, to be short, controllable little brush fires. So while the Great Powers knew something was coming - "some damned thing in the Balkans" - most everyone expected it to be short, contained and over in a few weeks, at which point the march of human progress could continue. Posted by: BignJames at July 17, 2020 10:34 AM (X/Pw5) About 27 years ago I had a very specific dream about an event that would have been extraordinarily unique, and wholly unexpected. When I woke, I even looked in the papers to see if it had actually happened, or if I had just dreamed it. In my dream, I pictured EXACTLY what it would have looked like, if it HAD occurred. It had not. About 2 weeks later, the exact event happened. And the exact details were in the paper. My wife is the only would who could confirm that this thing had occurred as it did. And she's dead now. So... all I can say is, I've never had anything remotely like this happen in my life, and I don't recall ever even having anything happen like it that DIDN'T come true. Still, I just chalk it up as a remarkable coincidence. Posted by: BurtTC at July 17, 2020 10:38 AM (hku12) 431

I wonder if we will transition to a Mexican/3rd world type system of sports. It's interesting, to say the least. They mix amateur and semi-pro and Pro together pretty indiscriminately, and teams just try to schedule games with other teams that are on their level. I got to see a game in Guadalajara once between the biggest local school and a pro team. The school won, because that year the son of the University President was Team Captain, so his dad hired the top 3 or 4 professional players in the country to play on his team with him. I can see us going there soon.

Now in 2020, the testing seems to be flawed and some are deliberately fudging the numbers. But the death toll is still far below that of 1918-1919 and the population is three times what it was then. Posted by: Anna Puma at July 17, 2020 10:47 AM (5PmFe) 470

So, for those of you who might be interested, I'm going to recommend two books:
1913: The Defiant Swan Song by Virginia Cowles, an account of life in "seven great cities on the eve of the First World War." It covers politics, but is much more attuned to the fashions and artistic modes of the day. Note: You'll also find this book under the title 1913: An End And A Beginning. https://tinyurl.com/y4tztkdv And there's Juliet Nicholson's The Perfect Summer: England 1911, Just Before The Storm, which has interested me ever since I read this passage, which the author gives no note for and I have never been able to confirm: "Small silver rings clamped into the nipples deepened, enhanced and raised the cleavage by providing a sort of ledge on which the evening gown rested precariously." https://tinyurl.com/y3v5q8v8 Posted by: Mary Poppins' Practically Perfect Piercing at July 17, 2020 10:56 AM (2JVJo) Posted by: nurse ratched at July 17, 2020 10:56 AM (W2Pud) 524

- The first time I got a real we're-not-in-Kansas-anymore feeling regarding academia was when I read Temperament by Stuart Isacoff on the rather obscure topic of minute tuning system differences in the creation of scales.
