Saturday Morning Coffee Break

718coffee.jpg

***

Happy Saturday folks. Feel free to opine or bloviate away this morning. As always just a couple of rules. Those rules are no running with sharp objects, no pulling the 'ettes hair, no pissing in the pool and being nice to one another.

Have a great weekend!

Watching old western series and movies on Grit, one can see where Mel Brooks got a lot of ideas for Blazing Saddles. Some scenes one could just swap sound tracks.

Grit! is good, even if with their limited playlist. I wonder why it took them so long, given their name, to run the original True Grit with John Wayne and Kim Darby. I watched it about 2 weeks ago, and it is still grand.

The next time somebody walks past me when I'm waxing my car and cracks, "Ya missed a spot," I'm going to go all JW on him and say: "If I ever meet one of you Texas waddies who *hasn't* said, 'Ya missed a spot,' I'll shake his hand and buy him a Daniel Webster cee-gar."

On second thought, nah. Nobody here would get it, and they might think "Texas waddies" is a racist remark.

29 I never have had "cowboy coffee". Coffee boiled in fresh water over a camp fire. When in the BS's. camping of course, coffee wasn't allowed. I had been drinking coffee from about 12 or so, so I didn't understand why boys older than me couldn't drink coffee.
In the military, coffee was freely distributed from those big urns the mess halls had. Or in the field from the insulated large containers. Not the best coffee, but at that time I wasn't really into how good the coffee was, just the caffeine.

That was what Denverites called strong coffee. You couldn't get anything strong except espresso at coffee shops there. You could buy coffee-with-chicory at the grocery store, though, not too expensive then.

I brought some chicory coffee to work one day near Christmas, thinking to give my co-workers a treat, and made up a nice pot. An hour later I heard someone asking the receptionist, "Is there something wrong with the coffeemaker?"

I gave up after that.

Scoops -- you mean those things with 2-3 teaspoons per scoop? Yeah, that's too much. With coffee-and-chicory, I do ([number of cups in carafe] + 1) = number of teaspoons of coffee grounds. Six cups, seven teaspoons. If it's weaker coffee, dark roast or French roast or (God help me) Maxwell House, I'll do + 2.

Part of the problem is that for coffee and coffeemakers, there isn't a standard definition of "cup." I use a small Cafe du Monde cup, which is probably half the size of a work mug.

Even the stodgiest companies are realizing employees can work from home w/o a hit to productivity. That's bad news for the downtown area closest to me. The population of the city proper has been falling since the late 60's. They also rely on a 1% earnings tax, that you are compelled to pay if you live OR work in the city. You know what? F-em. It's a problem of their own devising.

76 Not wearing a mask kind of limits what businesses you can go into. The local pizza shop might not care, but just about any big business has all the signs up about no entry without a mask.Went to the local University hospital for a routine checkup at a clinic. I had to wait outside to be called in, but no one took my temp. Maybe they have those remote sensors used in some places. Wore my usual cheap paper mask, but so did just about everyone else. They checked me out in record time, probably because they limit the numbers coming in.

Sounds like that an honest statement. And, typical leftist, not smart enough to think things through and worry the small business owner might not have insurance to cover the losses. Or, an insurance company might say, "sorry, your government let this happen, so, we don't have to cover your losses."

Though, I may be giving the leftist mayor too much credit, that he actually might actually care about his constituents beyond their ability to keep him in office.

I'd finish every shift with my shirt soaked. If the little goofballs who chirp "I LOVE summer!" ever had to *work* outdoors instead of merely playing in their gardens or working out for a brief time, they'd "sell their shriveled raisin souls" to get back into the A/C.

Once upon a time, I'd guess -- when Bourbon Street actually lived up to its reputation and had real strip clubs -- the big stars on the circuit would wear interesting costumes and present a character on stage. A titillating one, of course (I remember posters for one lady ca. 1965 * whose stage persona was that of a sexy schoolteacher). Possibly some of them did "exotic" shows with a sarong, as you say, or Arabian seven-veils dances.

Somehow the term stuck.

* 1965 was toward the end of the era. I grew up about 3-4 blocks from the clubs, and when I was 12 and up I made a point of walking past the clubs and eyeing the posters on my way to the library or back home.

160 but I prefer this story and video to restore my faith in humanity-or at least in compassionate people using modern medical technology to help people. Baby gets hearing aids for the first. Not sure if the baby is smiling because the mom pulled down her mask, or because the baby can now hear, but it's a sweet video:
Posted by: FenelonSpoke

**************

Well, having worked with children professionally for 35+ years, my interpretation of your video is that the baby's response is more visual. He didn't start smiling until she pulled down her mask and began making happy facial expressions. Yet the gist of the video is that a miraculous medical achievement occurred. It also looks like external hearing aids, not cochlear implants, so it is doubtful he has complete neural hearing loss or is hearing sound for the first time. Just more clickbait if you ask me.

There is no denying that your tastes and sense of humor are distinctly different from mine. I have an appreciation of the irony of the human condition and express it in ways that are oftentimes obscure or multilayered. I do not endorse or patronize strip clubs, finding them exploitative and depressing. But there is no denying the irony that as much of a legal challenge to the public health edicts has come from a strip club as from churches.

You don't 'get' me. I 'get' that. To each his own, I say.

True 'Cowboy coffee' is made the way my gramma made it, with cold water, coffee grounds, a pinch of salt, and a few egg shells thrown in. Always tasted better than the crap at a diner.

Years later I understand why - the calcium carbonate naturally bound in the eggshells neutralized the acids coming from the beans smoothing out the flavor, and the salt prevented some oxidation of the coffee oils.

Net result was a non-bitter cup of strong coffee.

244 Here's the little bit I know about roofing. (Stepson used to do it for a living). Standard asphalt tiles are called 3 tab. There is a longer version they use on the coast that handles storms better. Stainless steel roofing nails are the way to go, if you want a long lasting roof. They are more expensive, of course. This house was re-roofed in 2006 and we redid it last year. Leaves from the maple tree had discolored it. That's when we found out they'd used the standard nails. A good crew can do the roof quickly. I'm going with a metal roof if I have to deal with this again.

I always thought that was a bad idea
Posted by: vmom 2020 's tale of teigen twitterazism at July 18, 2020 10:20 AM (TOyHQ)

Never. You burn down some hardwood like maple, ash or oak to claos, then scrape over a *small* amount of coals and perk the coffee over it. You ca use a grate, fire dogs (a couple of steel bars) or stck a forked stick in the ground and hang the kettle from it over the coals.

If you're in a real hurry, you make a *very small* fire and hang the kettle over it. Outdoor pictures always show cookfires way, wat bigger that in real life. You want *small and hot* for any cooking. It's not a homecoming game and you're not heating your home with it. It's a cookfire. Think about the size of a stove burner.

Place the pot right on the fire like that and you'll get a blackened, burnt mess, and the spout, lid knob and bail are not going to remain attached to the kettle for long, either.

Posted by: Guy Smiley at July 18, 2020 10:26 AM (FtO5h)

247 Yeah, you don't place the percolator directly on the freakin' fire. Oy. That picture is a classic case of people who've never done things outdoors taking pictures of the way they think things are done outdoors.
Posted by: Guy Smiley at July 18, 2020 10:16 AM (FtO5h)

And that's not a percolator, just a kettle. It doesn't really hurt to put a kettle on open flames, just not very efficient.

You can be reasonably certain that any Chinese construction job of any size was built in a shower of corruption. Their building practices suck to begin with but layer it on with mountains of corruption and you can see where this is headed.

I did an inspection tour of the new University of Macau a couple years after it was built. It was already beginning to deteriorate. China is also not real big on maintenance.

When the 3 Gorges was first built Chinese authorities were bragging that it was built to be able to handle a once in 10,000 year flood. Then was revised down to 1000. Then 100 years. Now they don't talk about it at all.

Posted by: FIIGMO at July 18, 2020 10:35 AM

Slight difference in USA than China.

In pictures of China, you see everyone wearing the same mask. The medical masks.

Here in the USA, people are wearing all different kids of masks, barely any of them medical.

Mask-wearing here has basically been made into a fashion statement.

And I would guess that 90% of people in the USA aren't wearing masks properly. i.e. putting them on when leaving the house, not touching them the entire time they are out of the house, then only touching them to take them off when they get home and discarding them.

All the people who keep them in their pockets or wear them around their chin and then touch them to put them on to cover their faces... all doing it wrong. As soon as you touch the mask after putting it on your face, it's useless.

And how many people are using the same mask to go into multiple places while out and about? And putting them on, taking them off, putting them back on, taking them off, etc, every time.

All useless.

You notice that none of the "experts" bother to even explain this info. Neither do any of the tyrant Governors. Because they know if they did, people would tell them lolgf.

But yeah, it would be pretty hilarious to see a cell phone video of someone getting right back in a scolding Karen's face and scolding HER about how she's not wearing her face mask correctly.

Ironically, the people who wear their masks in their cars are the only ones doing it correctly, if they put them on at home, don't touch them while driving to/from they want to go and then only touching them to take them off at home.

Posted by: Clyde Shelton at July 18, 2020 10:51 AM (Do5/p)

308 Oh, I wear the mask as I go through the door, but pull it down when no one is around or wear it under my nose. As long as you have it on, no one seems to care how it is worn, especially because the employees are totally sympathetic. They hate having to wear them.

mostly agrarian people, forcing them into cities and factories."

they destroy farm homes as well, drag out owners that lived there long time. And they seem able to monitor everything ... yet much crime is overlooked, just don't go against the CCP plans. Google and various aps will give the CCP even more control ...

but they do manage to produce ... everything. Helps when people are expendable instead of everyone looking for golden government jobs, golden early retirement, or a lawsuit for a million. Even fruits ... they produce like 40-50% of many important fruits. The West needs to decide if liberty is more important than supporting the China model (people as expendable resources that belong to "government").

So true! We live in a deep blue state, and the only "R" identified people here are the most liberal country club Rockefeller republicans imaginable. Still, a friend's daughter (friend is a single mom and rabid lib) married into one of these families a couple of years ago and omg the mom was and still is on fire about it.

The sad thing for that mom is that the daughter has made the conscious decision to move ahead with her new married life, and the lib mom is being left behind. The daughter & her husband keep the lib mom on a strict "time diet" for when they will let her visit and see the new grandbaby.

Given how much lib mom rants to us, we can only imagine how much ranting goes on to the daughter who is increasingly tuning her out. Libs are their own worst enemies, as well as being our enemies.

Satellite views show a bulge, but it could indeed just be how pics are spliced together ... they have had to release a lot of water, rains are at historic levels now, so the next week will be critical, even if it doesn't fail. A big collapse might be the best thing for "world peace" ... since it might break the CCP itself, idk.

I've been trying to follow the situation for the last couple weeks but China being China they are doing a lot to cover it all up.

What's incredible about the water they are releasing from the 3 Gorges is that it is already causing massive flooding in downstream cities and towns but they are doing it anyway because if they don't it might cause a biblical level failure of the damn.

There are over 100 million people living downstream from the 3 Gorges. Even in China terms, that's a lot of people.

367 I am a quasi medical guy (must read medical literature frequently in my lawyer-work) and I have to say that the preliminary trials of the Covid vaccine are more than "promising" --they are extraordinarily excellent.
You almost never see complete response (as here) and no, I repeat no, serious adverse effects.

As far as I'm concerned they should start immediate production for the purpose of offering it to the very vulnerable with a "black box" warning and informed consent protocol, to the effect that you can take it now with the understanding that they haven't completed full safety trials.

So, practically speaking, there should be an effective vaccine for the actual at-risk group in a month. I'm pretty sure DJT is of a similar mind and will make it happen.

Meanwhile, Vox has put the goalposts on a hypersonic missile and now leads with "Why a Vaccine May Not Be Enough!" The article quotes a Johns Hopkins expert who qualifies the early trials by saying that protection from the vaccine is likely to be "incomplete and short lived"

And by "incomplete" she means ONLY that it is likely to prevent life threatening Covid illness, but may not (I shit you not) prevent "asymptomatic or mild illness."

And by "short lived" it is likely to confer protection for "only a few years" instead of decades.

My God man, we must not reopen society unless we have a vaccine that can prevent the sniffles for decades!

The professional Doom & Gloomers have become self parody.

Interesting that neither child was accepted into the detention facilities. Old strategy still working. Get young people to do the dirty work, that the police have to go easy on. I wonder what is going on? Why are these kids tasked with this craziness. Make the people of Atl think they live in Chicago or Mogidishu? Or get some expendable kid run over, or shot by the authorities?

I'm not that conspiratorial, yet, but this vaccine has been incredibly fast tracked for a fucking cold virus that has similar dangers as the flu.

I want no part of that vaccine. Same way I dont do the flu vaccine anymore. Almost every year I've gotten sick after getting it.

382 dam break would be massive ... but not all those millions would be in the flood zone downstream. It would be the infrastructure collapse that would kill millions probably ... and since even the US is dependent on China for many supply chains ... (how the hell did our wise overseers allow that/) ... could be a Big Event.

But it's a better way to get rid of CCP than war maybe, and to realign our trade partners with Western interests, not Commie Conquest ... (if it would accomplish that? ... our weather and earthquake weapons are running 24/7? ha).

383 JT, moving date is the 28th. Just secured an apartment in Bethesda literally yesterday. Have moves, clean out people lined up. Just starting to sink in that this is it.
I'm excited, anxious, joyful, sad all at once.

384 Honestly, I don't want her to die now. Then the Dems will be screaming about how Roe v Wade will be outlawed and it'll be the Handmaid's Tale in America and the Karens will get all excited about that.
I don't want abortion to be front and center in this campaign. Law and order and the economy (and the lockdowns which are killing the economy) should be the issues.

Probably ought to discuss what's down river from the dam. That's interesting. Towns, cities, a couple nuke plants... ?

Posted by: Martini Farmer at July 18, 2020 11:18 AM

Speaking of nuke plants, in the "Impossible Engineering" episode on the Three Gorges Dam, they note that the Dam uses 32 generators, each one with the equivalent power generation of a small nuclear power plant.

My comments on dancers was just to provide some insight on who they are. I don't think "exotic", outside of Vegas, has been a thing for decades. Anybody that claws their way out of hell gets my respect and the poor girls that just end up deeper deserve my pity. That's just my view. I wasn't really addressing anyone else's opinion on the dancers, just giving some background, since I assume you've never met any, lol.

Appreciate the thought. It's been a little over two years and I've coped pretty well, but leaving the home we built and having to make this move all on my own has been difficult. Especially as my "friends" have been no help at all. Covid is a great excuse to not offer anything but platitudes.
The Horde has been more help than anyone here.

394 I get pissed when I read about RBG. She has the same cancer that killed my husband at a much younger age. Same complications as he had. Yet, somehow she survives. Is she getting some kind of extraordinary treatment not available to the deplorables?
