Evergreen Post

Analyzing ‘The Gods of the Copybook Headings’ by Rudyard Kipling

There is never a bad time to bring up TGOTCH. Read it at my funeral or wedding. Play a recording of it for the surgical staff when I'm getting open heart surgery. Recite it as my wife is in labor, so the first thing my kid hears is wisdom. I have it on the door to my office at home, so I see it every day of the year.

AS I PASS through my incarnations in every age and race,
I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market Place.
Peering through reverent fingers I watch them flourish and fall,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings, I notice, outlast them all.

We were living in trees when they met us. They showed us each in turn
That Water would certainly wet us, as Fire would certainly burn:
But we found them lacking in Uplift, Vision and Breadth of Mind,
So we left them to teach the Gorillas while we followed the March of Mankind.

We moved as the Spirit listed. They never altered their pace,
Being neither cloud nor wind-borne like the Gods of the Market Place,
But they always caught up with our progress, and presently word would come
That a tribe had been wiped off its icefield, or the lights had gone out in Rome.

With the Hopes that our World is built on they were utterly out of touch,
They denied that the Moon was Stilton; they denied she was even Dutch;
They denied that Wishes were Horses; they denied that a Pig had Wings;
So we worshipped the Gods of the Market Who promised these beautiful things.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."

On the first Feminian Sandstones we were promised the Fuller Life
(Which started by loving our neighbour and ended by loving his wife)
Till our women had no more children and the men lost reason and faith,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "The Wages of Sin is Death."

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man
There are only four things certain since Social Progress began.
That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow returns to her Mire,
And the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;

And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Headings with terror and slaughter return!

39 Three homicides in three days in Portland.

In recent years, Portland has averaged about twenty homicides a year. In the worst of the '90's, Portland averaged about a homicide a week.

Shootings in Portland are 240% higher than the same time last year.

Portland just abolished the police gang crimes unit (which had been renamed the "gun crimes unit" for political reasons), so there is no longer a police unit tasked with tracking the people in Portland most likely to kill and be killed.

Enjoy the world you've created, Portland voters.

62 the penalty topic is a good lesson if you have teenagers. In California, Newsom is a tyrant. However, the enforcers in our area (sheriff and city council) are flipping him the bird, and telling everyone it's voluntary.
It's a good example of "he who has the gun sets the rules." I tell the kids that Newsom would have to one up them with his own guns (the Nat guard) which he won't do.

83 My advice is try to find an exact official copy of your appropriate state/locality mask order. It should (yes I know) have two items of utility:

One is an exemption for those with medical conditions that could be compromised by the wearing of a mask; and,
two, a statement that you are not required to produce personal information describing the reason (under HIPAA) that wearing a mask will medically compromise your health.

98 Take one standard N-95 mask. Cut a 2.5" diameter hole in it, directly in front of the mouth.

Glue a 3" diameter piece of mesh fabric over the cut-out opening, installed on the inside of the mask. Quarter-inch openings in the mesh oughta work.

It's a "mask". It's a "face covering".

And it's guaranteed to send random Karens into orbit.

99 I think what's really infuriating is what we all know what this is about.

A couple of swing states are going to try to use the "emergency" to compel mail-in ballots only (you can go to the market, but you can't go to the polls); the GOP will take it to court quick as a cat, and as soon as we get a few rulings that no, bro, the voting laws in each state have not been abrogated by the mighty flu, this will ALL magically disappear like it never happened.
That's what really burns me--we have to put our lives on hold so that this really stupid plan can play out.

Notice that as soon as Texas had such a ruling, the Gov doubled-down on oh-my-gosh-its-really-an-emergency.!! so Many cases!! He's trying to prep the battlespace for the next appeal.

118 PORTLAND

The Left is all excited because one of the homicides in Portland was allegedly a black person killed by a random white person. As we all know, this happens constantly in the United States.

The only problem is that the person arrested is a mighty dark-skinned white person (the mugshot lists his race as "unknown"). The second problem is that the shooting occurred outside a strip club (a popular place for shootings in Portland), and the surveillance tapes show that a group including the two people were hanging out together prior to the shooting, so they clearly knew each other.

Of course, in America in 2020, actual facts don't matter, so I expect rioting in Portland over this.

154 That top comic strip is Allie Brosh or a repurposed version of her work or a copycat. She's very funny. Her old website Hyperbole and a Half is still up - no new entries but lots of great old content. If you have not spent some time there and need a laugh, it's great. Brosh has a book or two. I wish she was more prolific because she's really funny.

One day, I was cruising southbound Wadsworth with Joe Mannix while the schoolteachers were having one of their bitchy little protests, replete with pre-printed signs declaiming that Public Schools Deserve Better...

I told him they would think we're rich guys because we were white, and in a Town Car.

He said "No way. This is a 20 year old Town Car with bad paint job, and it burns oil."

I said "Watch this," and screamed in my very fucking loud voice "Public Schools Deserve To Be Defunded!!!"

One of these crunchy old commie fags immediately shouted back "That's easy for the guy in the Town Car to say!!!"

Joe looked crestfallen and said "That's the fastest I've ever been proven wrong."

My 7 y/o has been away from therapies since March because physical and occupational therapy is pointless over a screen and he won't focus for speech therapy with a screen. 244 I think about the weirdest date I ever had was when I started going out with a server chick from work when I was college aged and she was in college.

She was studying to be a forensic entomologist and took me on our first date to the Dr. Bass' Body Farm near the University of Tennessee Knoxville.

We looked at a couple of dead bodies and the highlight was when she hoisted one up on a pulley out of a marshy area.

It was all very romantic. I later sprang for a large pizza and two pitchers of beer out of the $25 I'd made selling blood plasma.

Those were good times. Sell a 850 ml of plasma for cash and then you get drunk a little easier.

I banged her about two nights later on her couch, while her college roommate was in the next room.

247 I am not sure what people want the Trump
administration to do with DACA. They were just told by the SC that they
cannot end the program unless they do undefined by the court steps to
mitigate those affected by it. So the DACA crowd will get to stay and
there will have to be some sort of long term citizenship path for them.
Particularly the ones that have served in the military.

Posted by: Jen the original at July 10, 2020 10:53 PM (Qr6+z)

SCOTUS (wrongly) said Trump had to follow the administrative process (since the original EO was illegal, he shouldn't have to). I do not think he has to mitigate any effects on any illegals nor should he.

There is already a pathway for people who serve in the military. But that pathway is not going to be open to DACA recipients unless they served after Obama issued green cards. Under Obama, the military announced that it would recruit up to 1500 such DACA recipients a year. At most given those numbers, a few thousand (between 3000 and 9000) would be eligible for citizenship based on their military service.
The rest have home countries and it is not the US. They can go back there.

271 118 PORTLAND

My oncologist took her surgical mask off and put on a cloth one that just hung down but wasn't tied to make a fit with her face in my last meeting with her- though she did keep her face shield on- while her nurse had to keep pulling the surgical mask back up as it was constantly slipping down.

I didn't get the sense they believed masks are the difference between life and death.

314 I once picked up a girl that was drinking at the bar I was working at and successfully completed my mission.

Three days later, I was pulled over by the police for going "approximately 52 in a 45 mph zone" and when I went to get the registration out of the glove box, the officer spotted a bag of weed I had and arrested me.

He asked me if there were any more drugs in the car, and honestly, to the best of my knowledge, I told him there was not. He ended up finding two more baggies with an 1/8th of an ounce each in them that I had forgotten, as well as finding a small woman's clutch purse with several pills in it that said trollop had left in the car.

I was charged with with possession with intent for resale on the weed and possession of a Schedule 2 substance for the pills, until such time as the toxicology report returned.

On my arraignment court day, it turned out the pills were antibiotics for some sort of venereal disease. So I had to go get myself checked and the doctor my prostate at 22 years old to make sure my burning pee wasn't a prostate problem.

That pretty much sucked.

Can't imagine too many people are jumping forward to help the guy make his $1 million bail. Maybe the woke executives at Harley can do it?

Me, I say just put him on a stage at Sturgis during rally week, let everyone know who he is and what he did, and then have law enforcement look the other way as so many do with all the woke mobs and let nature take its course.

385 Odd happenings on first dates.
First date with the woman who was my future first wife.
We lived in Southern IN across the river from Louisville, KY. The city owned an excursion steamboat, The Belle of Louisville. Every Saturday night it ran a 24 mile round trip dance cruise with a live band.
On this particular night as we were returning to the dock the boat lost power. Paddlewheel stopped and we were drifting downstream in the current. We came very close to hitting the I-65 bridge pier and were saved by a couple of local towboats who kept us from striking the next bridge down river. They also towed us to the pier for debarkation.
The band meanwhile was playing, Nearer My God to Thee. Did I take the hint? Nope. Young and stupid.

They might as well just go ahead and force the QB position to be filled only by women - literally - and it would do nothing to change the current trajectory of its popularity. F-ck the NFL, the owners, players, the coaches, and most of all the fans that continue to pour money down that corporate sewer that allow it to have the influence on society that it does.

405 I bought lots of cherries today and I will be canning cherries tomorrow.

Yesterday I bought a small batch of cherries to make sure they were ripe and tasty, and they are Lapins and they are very tasty

I decided that I wanted to make brandied cherries, but I decided to not break open the good fifth of brandy in the back shelf, and I prefer to drink my Pisco neat, so I mixed up rum and molasses and put up a quart of cherries that way.

Today I had a few, and . . . Yup. They are working!

everyone is worked up, and there is an air of riot around. Everyone is afraid that they will be the next target. The mask shaming and screeching gives status to the shrieker, and gives the feeling that they won't be eaten next.

in short: masking makes everyone the governor's bitch. by forcing masks on everyone else you get a bit more status than the person you are forcing the mask onto.
It is popular with our betters because it automatically creates scapegoats out of the people who are resisting.
It is a negative feedback loop as well.

454 Good Morning Morons
Rant on

With regard to 'freedom of speech' enshrined in the 1st Amendment it is, and always has been, one of the most misunderstood parts of the Constitution. Some would say the 2nd is because it has been virtually ignored since the 30s, but it isn't because anyone misunderstands it, the liberals just don't like it so they ignore it, whether in congress or on the bench. The first amendment is worded as follows:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Note the key words Congress shall make no law It is obvious that that means this applied to the federal government, specifically congress. Now later on the liberals on the bench decided that via the 14th amendment it also applied to the States via 'incorporation' but how they could do this defies logic since they ignored the 2nd amendment which somehow avoided incorporation.

But regardless of 'incorporation' it still means that it only applies to government at all levels and their individual departments. IT DOES NOT APPLY TO INDIVIDUALS OR BUSINESSES. If you go to work and call your boss a demented crap weasel he can fire your ass and you have no protection from the so-called freedom of speech. In fact, he can bring charges for simple assault.

End of rant

It would not surprise me at all if some of it is knock-on psychological damage from parents growing up during the Cold War, expecting to be fried by a nuke at any moment.

Not to mention the communist disaster-of-the-week, touted by the media, indoctrinated by every public school teacher, and only fixable by going FULL COMMUNIST RIGHT NOW.

At present, it's Chinese Lung Flu and "global warming", but in the past it's been acid rain, the ozone hole, "Soylent Green" levels of overpopulation, a new Ice Age... I can think of a bunch of others without even breaking a sweat.

And now we're on the second or third generation that's been indoctrinated to believe in DOOM AT ANY MOMENT.

480 I cook black beans much as the local Soul Food joint does their black eyed peas.

But I substitute bacon grease for their ham hock, and I've got a touch of cayenne pepper going on, in addition to the black pepper and garlic powder.

And for Tex-Mex fare? Fire up the skillet, add a bit more bacon grease, a few splashes of Tobasco and Sport Pepper juice, mash 'em down into Refried Black Beans.

Loaded with flavor, and not runny like Taco Hell Synthetic Fake Beans.

I call Democrats liberals which I know is an abuse of the term 'liberal' but the MFM made it up ,so it became the standard over time. I call the Democrats communists because their Party Plank is virtually the same as the Communist Party plank. I also think the original view of 'incorporation' was a mistake. The 14th amendment is probably the worst amendments ever passed and 'ratified', although there is some legal question as to whether it was legally ratified or not.

510 And if you're not experiencing God through other people face to face and you're left with the T.V. ranting with doom and gloom and saying "Stay Inside. Stay Inside" no wonder he feels awful

And I don't mean to suggest that we only experience God through other people but the "other people": is certainly part of Christian community and why people like to go to church-to share and pray with others, to talk about things, to hear that God is with us in the midst of our struggles.
Somebody else told me that he was glad that church was open again (We have had church outside or at someone's house) because he wanted to experiencee God in the midst of the congregants he hasn't seen face to face. So there really is something about we are created in the image of God and when we're wearing masks the image of God is "masked".I do not require masks in church, but we have to have dopes like Newsome say "You can't sing in church" and you have to be maskd.

I think it was planned for later in the year. I think the Milwaukee D convention was supposed to be the kickoff, but because of the Kung Flu it started to look like there wouldn't be a D convention, then when the George Floyd thing hit it gave the midwestern unit the opportunity to assemble in Minneapolis instead of Milwaukee. Then the rest of the country followed the plan. I also think this was just a warmup. The real mayhem is going to be around the inauguration. I also think ICE and CBP will increasingly be targeted, with the encouragement of many in the media and many prominent Democrats.

There's so much noise in the numbers I've given up on any objectivity. My sister near Dallas explained that in her county, when you test positive, you self isolate for a week then test again and repeat until you test negative. The result is that one case can result in 1,2,3 or however many positive tests. What are the numbers we are seeing? Are they cases? are they positive tests? Are they some of both depending on who is counting? And we all know about deaths of people WITH Chinese Death cooties vs deaths of people FROM Chinese Death Cooties.

The numbers are Garbage In, Garbage Out and nobody knows exactly what's going on, even the medical folks and politicians who make the decisions, so they make the decisions based on PR rather than the disease.

We need people to reset us how to fit into society and be human. Without contact we lose our calibration and start wandering off.

Jordan Peterson has a series on his website (jordanpeterson.com) about Genesis, there is about 12 episodes so far, and they are about 90 minutes each, and he wanders from Genesis, to Jung to totalitarianism and back again. I could not tell from just listening to the speeches if he believed in God or not, but I was surprised at how deeply he believes in humanity.

552 My worse date was she was hot to trot and I wasn't. I wasn't a casual sex guy when I was just out of high school.
Part of that was I didn't want to leave a child behind somewhere and I was in the service.

(and yes there actually are young men who were brought up to think about that sort of stuff and actually have the control to avoid succumbing to the temptation.)

I felt like an idiot the entire night. I tried to avoid blind dates forever after that. Only went out with women I'd already met and knew something about.

Fewer surprises that way or at least the surprises happened later during the acquaintanceship.

Actually I think a pivot chart would be more useful, and those multi-variable weighted analyses would be more useful.
If you are visual and need a way to pull data together in constellations, I suppose it would work, but I suppose that is more visually appealing than "lists" and is supposed to show some insane level of focus and lack of organization.

559 And that's one reason why the Biblical stories are so important. Only Moses sees God face to face, but they experience him in community in numerous ways. And why the story of Jesus is so wonderful for Christians (I'm not trying to preach here, just trying to make a theological point) ) One reason is that we believe he's God in the flesh, and he took himself in the flesh to be with people to restore, heal and help them and to give his life for them.

613 Had a good shop day today. Got in a couple of hours mowing, skipping some patches because of large puddles left by recent rainfall.

Fished the suction hose out of the rainwater cistern where I had dropped it after pumping it out on Tuesday.

And I finally re-habbed my Air Stair. It's metal staircase on wheels, kind of like what they use for stocking shelves in Home Depot. But this was formerly used by a helicopter company, and looks like a boarding stair for small airliners, or for working on empennage of aircraft. I got it a closeout sale for the local auto wrecking yard, along with a hydraulic rolling lift meant to pick up and tote helicopters like the Bell 212 series.

The Air Stair had a broken weld on one of the bottom horizontal braces, and one vertical support had filled with rainwater, and frozen, and split and rusted out. So I welded the broken brace, cut out the rusty section of square tube, and welded in a piece of a size that nicely slipped over the stumps. Oiled up the caster wheels, and good as new!

I need the damned thing to get up on the roof of my old motorhome, which had 4 of those crank-up roof vents demolished by the recent hailstorm. I put a ladder up, and got one near the edge of the roof on the front right, but the roof is round at the sides, and climbing onto from a ladder is difficult for a 29 year old. Also, the roof is aluminum, and subject to caving in if crawled upon between the roof ribs. The Air Stair should make access easier.

625 I do not understand the Turkish Sofachute.
Posted by: Gentlemen, this is democracy manifest
I have done a lot of paragliding. It is incredible but also a bit dangerous. Turkey is famous for paragliding. That chute is a paragliding wing. Often a pro pilot, will bring up another tourist or friend. That is called tandem paragliding. Larger wings can carry more weight. So it is not difficult to calculate how large a wing you need for a pilot, and the couch and tv etc. Normally you run off the mountain into a bit of an headwind and take off. In this case, they mounted the couch on skis. And his friends pushed him a bit down an incline, into a bit of head wind.
Very impressive. Normally we are in a harness that is a bit like you would use for climbing, you can not fall out of your wing. I have flown hundreds of hours, but I was very nervous that he had nothing holding him onto the couch. Those lines that attach the couch to his wing, are called risers, and I was nervous/impressed he did not hold onto those. He was very relaxed up there. Also, his landing was very impressive. He had to land on that particular area, with his skis. But he is probably a professional tandem pilot, and for him, it is something he does a few times a day.

I climbed up a few steps, and it seems remarkably stable, given that it's on turf that is soft and wet. Before I use it to climb on the bus roof, I will rig a prop to prevent it toppling away from the bus.

671 Question for the horde; the cops seemed to want their detective to be the one to call her, not me. Is that normal?
Posted by: TexasDan at July 11, 2020 01:26 AM (2HIdp)

Yep. They want to get a reaction when they tell someone a person they know is dead. They also want to ask what inspired them to think about checking on them.

This is standard as the odds are that someone who has a loved one checked up on can be the person who did them in and already knew they were dead but didn't want to be the one to discover them.

The odds of someone being murdered by someone they know are large so it's always best to examine the relatives of anyone who's died under suspicious circumstances especially if they were involved with the discovery somehow. (people get impatient)

Cops think of themselves as good lie detectors (not necessarily true) they like to be on hand when a person first gets the news. Their reactions and words can expose foreknowledge which might mean they did it or had it done or know who did it.

The Goya Extra Virgin Olive Oil is very good for the price. I recall it won a taste test from a serious publication years ago. It is not going to compete with extreme high end stuff if you are some type of aficionado (they do exist), but it is good stuff and very fairly priced. It is Spanish olive oil and more than a few think the Spanish stuff is superior in to major competitors.

_______________

Given that both of the McCloskeys are reportedly lawyers, it would be surprising if they didn't have the required permits for the guns they were using. Also, Missouri has an expansive castle doctrine, and it appears that they were well within their legal rights in doing what they did. So this prosecutor could soon find herself on the wrong end of a civil lawsuit. But unfortunately, it will be the taxpayers there who will have to foot the bill for her incompetent and malevolent conduct, not the crooked prosecutor herself.
