Which of these Progressive Women deserves a statue? [KT]

Has a little Che thing goin' on, don't you think?

With all these statues coming down around the country, how about we consider some replacements, suitable for covering with graffiti? In keeping with today's intersectional norms, they should be women.

Candidate #1

First up, a blast from the past, Valerie Solanas, described by Daniel Greenfield after a puff piece in the NYT. Greenfield's piece is filled with interesting historical tidbits and cutting observations, so you might want to read the whole thing. This is the NYT:

Charles Manson is best known for his cult of followers and masterminding the Sharon Tate murders. But to focus on the stabbings is to ignore his contributions to folk music, including his seminal writings.

Bonnie Wertheim never actually makes the case for Solanas' legacy as a writer or a thinker. The Scum Manifesto reads like the ravings of an overeducated crazy person which is exactly what it is, and climaxes with a call for gender terrorism.
Here are some deep thoughts from the overlooked feminist thinker.

Via J.J. Sefton's excellent Morning Report yesterday, Bruce Bawer reminds us that If You're White, You're Racist. Period. According to Robin DiAngelo, "who proves that whites can be race hustlers, too." She is our second candidate.

At a time when violent radicals are attacking America and its institutions as fundamentally and irredeemably racist, Robin DiAngelo may well be the woman of the hour. A 63-year-old professor at the University of Washington in Seattle, she's a big name in multicultural education and in the burgeoning field of Whiteness Studies, which, unlike other identity-group "studies," exists not to exalt the group in question but to demonize it. In the words of National Post columnist Barbara Kay, Whiteness Studies teaches that to be white is to be "branded, literally in the flesh, with evidence of a kind of original sin. You can try to mitigate your evilness, but you can't eradicate it. The goal...is to entrench permanent race consciousness in everyone - eternal victimhood for non-whites, eternal guilt for whites."

1. Black professor writes a paper demonstrating that peaceful protests move public opinion toward protesters but violent protests move public opinion away from protesters.

2. White election data analyst tweets about the paper and GETS FIRED. The tweet violated a taboo in some left-wing quarters against criticizing violent protest.

Ace took it from there, with the reactions of a progressive listserv which included a number of furious Woke Women. This led to a nice riff on Les Enragees of the New French Revolution.

Side note: Remember when they kept talking about the guillotine at CHAZ/CHOP?

People claim the former was brutality & the latter as enlightenment.

17 I was going to say DON'T THEY TEACH THE FRENCH REVOLUTION ANYMORE IN SCHOOL but then I realized that I, in fact, did NOT learn about the French Revolution in school. (I'm 37.) And I have an IB diploma. I read up on it on my own time. Would be willing to bet my cousin who has a degree in history is wholly ignorant on the topic.

(Said cousin called up her parents a couple weeks ago and lambasted them for their white privilege for two hours. Why they didn't hang up I don't know. She's now been laid off. I told my mom (this cousin is my mom's sister's daughter) that she should be glad to give up her job to "BIPOC" because it's white privilege for her to have a job.)

100% ICU capacity... what does that mean? Are ALL those people there for China virus?

People get put in and taken out if ICU all the time. It doesn't mean they're gravely ill. Often it just means the hospital wants to isolate people. So.....

Yeah, I bet when EVERYONE IS GETTING TESTED, there's going to be a surprisingly high number of people who are positive for this virus. Including MANY who never were infected with this virus, but the tests are specific enough to determine that.

Friend has a relative that had the nose swab test. One in each nostril. One nostril tested positive, the other nostril tested negative. This is the first I hear of testing in both nostrils.

I read it but I don't think it's breaking new ground.

Just about everyone comes to the same conclusion, that red wins either way.

But the variable that is new, I think, affects the Nash Equilibrium. There is a very heavy skew now to the justice system. Two rules of law. One for them and one for us.

That means that you're now looking at a greater than zero percent chance that if you defend yourself from violent protestors, you'll be the one prosecuted.

I think that changes the game significantly.

Way back when, before AIDS stopped being a thing, there was a great deal of concern regarding home swab tests.

How do yo control for poorly administered tests? Wouldn't there be a substantial risk of false negatives?

So, related or not, I'm guessing two nose jobs are better than one, IF you want to find as many positives as you can.

The fear mongers and media are playing a game with levels of abstraction and goalposts. They're jumping between them to find the level with the "worst" numbers (individual states now) and talking up positive cases and % positive.

It's all a work.

Nationally and County and City level the virus is done.

There are a few border states getting positives from Mexico and the testing is more focused and the negative tests aren't being logged.

The State level is their last stand. It'll be done in a week.

It's going to be impossible to measure the scope of what's going on here.

For every patient who is now seeing a doctor, after months of not being able to get routine care, there are going to be explosions in the rates of newly detected SERIOUS health conditions that are going to require urgent medical care.

And many of those people are going to die, when earlier detection might have saved lives, or at the very least require substantial outlay of healthcare dollars to rectify a problem that didn't need to be this serious.

Quality of life effects are immeasurable.

And in the mean time, a percentage of these people will test positive for China wuwu.

The "see I told you so" crowd has their narrative.

You know what happens in lots of places? Patients get shuffled around, based on community needs, so it's entirely possible THIS hospital is the designated place to send patients who need ICU beds. Covid positive or not.

So if they're full (or nearly full), what about Hospital B down the street? Are they full? If you have a large enough community, it is absolutely useless to talk about capacity in one facility.

And as you suggest, if we're piling up state numbers, who is tracking how full hospitals in Phoenix are, compared to Tuscon or Flagstaff or Prescott or hell, even for that matter, Scottsdale and Mesa?

If all the Navajo cases are being sent to Phoenix, you bet your ass there's going to be an increase, because there AREN'T any hospitals on the reservations!

I recalled seeing a significant downturn in quality sometime in that date range, between Cartoon Wars and Season 14 and beyond.

I think it really hit them hard, the censorship. It was all so meta, doing episodes about how network executives were acting like ninnies because of threats of violence by angry muzzies.

And by the time they got to eps 200/201, the network not only refused to show the Mohammed images, they bleeped out the final speech about tolerance and whatever else (I don't know what got said, because as far as I know the speech never got heard).

Immediately after 201, the rest of that season is trash. I suspect the guys either went on a mini strike or just phoned it in.

I'm trying to watch Season 16 now, and the quality is just... meh. I've not seen any episodes beyond that.

193 O God, just got off the phone with a neighbor friend of my mother's. This lady (named Karen!) is SO pleased with the general pop's compliance with the face mask mandate and thinks Gretchen Whitmer is keeping us safe.

She brought up a reporter calling out Pence on lack of face masks and social distancing at the recent Trump rally. I of course countered with the same behavior by huge crowds of protesters/looters. She just brushed that off.

She also gleefully recounted chastising her favorite cafe owner for not having paper menus. Ugh.

This is a very nice gal who shows solicitous concern for my elderly mother, so I'm not going to come down too hard on her, but this is tooth-grindingly frustrating.

Oh, she's a retired teacher.

There's a lot of truth in that, and I've said the same thing about California, and about America. Both got the best and the worst: the best came because they figured leaving an established order gave them a reshuffle of the cards where they could rise on their merits.

The worst came because they were ne'er-do-wells worn out their welcome where they were, and wanted to screw up somewhere else.

An example of the latter was Jim Jones. He was batshit crazy, left Indiana, moved to SF (where else?) before ultimately moving to Guyana.

Answer: when the medical schools were founded, they were in tony areas, the Beverly Hills and La Jollas of their time. They became crappy and dangerous later, for reasons we all know only too well.

Try raising someone born in the 90s. The rot goes so deep, it permeates everywhere they go, other than at home.

My daughter doesn't talk to me.

What did I do wrong? Honestly... nothing. Somewhere along the way, the rot got to her, and then Bernie came along.

Will she grow out of it? That's up to her. I don't give it much thought anymore. If she wants a relationship with me (and her brother), she's going to have to make the next move. Maybe when she hits her 40s. We'll see... if I'm still around then.

I'm younger than you, but I learned about it in grade school and high school. Plus my Western Civ prof's doctoral thesis was on Napoleon, so we spent a week on the French Revolution and Napoleon. The best part was the cartoons he'd show from the newspapers at the time. He'd actually managed to make the cartoons the focus of his thesis, and got approval for it... AT OXFORD IN THE SIXTIES. He was one of my favorite profs, obviously.

so they do work ... especially for the non-symptomatic carrier of the virus. They would limit how much inoculum that person spread (from his mouth, not from what he touches), and everyone would have to wear masks since most don't know they are infected unless they are symptomatic.

BUT, we don't know how prevalent (oropharyngeal) asymptomatic spread really is. We don't know what downsides (social, physical, economic) there are from making 1000 people wear the mask to cover the 0.1% (?) infected.

And we don't really know if even the asymptomatic one would actually spread the disease without a mask, in normal situations. They seem to need longer exposure to an individual, like living/working in a nursing home, as opposed to walking past someone in a store. The infected person can also spread via touching a lot of things ... leaving a trail of multiple fomites (even if he properly destroys his own mask).

Only Karen knows that you hateful non-mask wearing Trump supporters are the reason for increased positives, even if hospitalizations continue to decline.

2) Language is free fire- as long as you do not go hog wild.

4) Do not let your personal bit become the only thing you talk about and the prism by which you post about everything- unless it is boobs or the women to which they are attached.

Personally, I would still like to see more allowance for people who do not toe the group line in discussions. It is good for us to have to defend out views. The problem I see is that almost always said discussion goes over the line and violates one of the other rules.

I'm an America First Nationalist, which used to be known as paleo conservatism, nationalist, and traditionalist. I'm sitting out this election. Neither party respects me, my family, and my community. I agree, the Sweden way was better (or was it the Swiss?) ... protect the elderly, let the thing run its course, don't destroy the economy. There is some doubt as to how much difference it made ... the curve seems to play out regardless of shutdown or mask or Sweden way. (even if masks "work", there are too many alternate paths)

For the first two weeks there was some question about it being a bio-weapon ... at this point I think it was a con job by Fauci, his chance to fame, and to drive sales for his cure. I don't agree. I think you are missing the fact that one of the things that led to Trump's popularity was that it was a response to organizations-distrust and hatred of the leaders of same. I am not sure you can characterize MAGA as an organization other than to use the term to refer to the general phenomenon.

The Tea Party was able to be be coopted BECAUSE it immediately started to organize (or others started organizing it for us.)

MAGA is a different animal, IMO, simply because it has at it's heart a dislike of institutionalized anything.

502 I remade the webbing on my gas mask and carry it in the truck. Only wore it once and took it along while grocery shopping last week as I wore my face sheild for a change instead of my casister mask I would have worn. Was waiting for someone to say something about only a face shield then would have put on the gas mask so fking quick it would have shocked them.
