Other than people saying mean things about her, she doesn't say. But if seeing her name misspelled is the best she can do, her life must actually be pretty good. I'm probably a racist for saying that. I no longer care. Also, I hate to rag on her appearance, but I'm going to rag on her appearance: it doesn't help that the photo of the author they chose for this piece is extremely unflattering. She looks like the ultimate überKaren. I look at her photo and I just want to stuff a large sock into that whiney, complainy mouth. I'm likely a racist for saying that, too.

I do it by default now, even though I also have a common name. It removes ambiguity. I do it with my name, other people's names, street names, whatever. If there is any possibility of telephone ambiguity, I spell it out. I also introduce myself and give my phone number at both the beginning *and* end of voice mail messages, unless it is someone with whom I interact routinely. Most people who have 5+ syllables in their names usually use an abbreviated form. Not just for we Americans, either - it includes their group as well.

People with easier to pronounce names promote truthiness of claims
When people make judgments about the truth of a claim, related but nonprobative information rapidly leads them to believe the claim-an effect called "truthiness". Would the pronounceability of others' names also influence the truthiness of claims attributed to them? We replicated previous work by asking subjects to evaluate people's names on a positive dimension, and extended that work by asking subjects to rate those names on negative dimensions. Then we addressed a novel theoretical issue by asking subjects to read that same list of names, and judge the truth of claims attributed to them. Across all experiments, easily pronounced names trumped difficult names. Moreover, the effect of pronounceability produced truthiness for claims attributed to those names. Our findings are a new instantiation of truthiness, and extend research on the truth effect as well as persuasion by showing that subjective, tangential properties such as ease of processing can matter when people evaluate information attributed to a source. My dad has a common and easy Anglo name. I heard him do exactly this on nearly every phone call my entire life. I don't endorse yelling at unmasked people OR raging at shop employees about masks, especially if this has been mandated by local government.
Today its "just doing their job". But it doesn't stop there. Next - it'll be a resident holding the door shut to the apartment complex because the manager said so - and plenty of white knights asking whats so tough about just putting on the mask for the oh so helpful Karen. Stock your shelves. Bring the food. State the rule if you have to to keep your job. Then let it be. Sometimes - stopping this crap requires being an asshole, to self appointed mask police assholes. What racism has she experienced, really? Other than people saying mean things about her, she doesn't say. But if seeing her name misspelled is the best she can do, her life must actually be pretty good.
____________ Reminds me of Michelle Obama telling her awful tale of the terribly hateful racism she has experienced in her horribly oppressed existence, such as some short white woman asking her to help her get an item off a high shelf at Target. Oh, the humanity! If racism is so "structural" and endemic in our society, then why can't these stupid bints come up with some actual evidence of it, instead of recounting these stupid non-racist incidents and trying to make them racist? People, of all races, frequently mispronounce names that are unusual to them. It has nothing to do with racism, it's just about what they're used to seeing and saying. And short people often ask taller people to help them get stuff that is out of their reach. Has zero to do with race; it's a height issue. So tired of this nonsense. 259 Now, Buckaroo Banzai?
Fine. Did you know the script was originally supposed to be for the sequel to Big Trouble In Little China? The movie suffers from what I like to call "too many wacky characteritis". Like the movie "1941". Everyone's trying to be kow-razee funny and there's nothing to hold it's center and keep it grounded. As someone mentioned the lead was weak. Imagine Kurt Russell instead. He might've been able to hold things together. Posted by: naturalfake at June 29, 2020 11:39 AM (7hCBA) Hudson Hawk had this problem as well. -- Look at this young, dumb nitwit. She's so young. She looks healthy. She has a decent job. She's working. She's likely making good money. She's also likely in want of nothing in terms of survival and in comparison to hard times past for humankind. And yet, she's so pathetically educated, she knows she must find a personal grievance that can then be extrapolated to be caused by her race. It's sad. It's very sad. I just want to beat the crap out of these brainwashed dopes, but it's no use. If all you can find to complain about is something half the world can likely say about themselves...that people misspell or mispronounce their names at times...then you're a grievance monger in search of a crime and you deserve zero attention. My surname is an odd name of Chinese/Indonesian origin. It's only three letters long yet all my life people have misspelled it and mispronounced it. Growing up, kids would make fun of my name, as well as my half-Asian-ness. I am a first-generation American, my parents having immigrated here from Holland a few years before I was born.
Yet never did I feel anything less than American. While getting teased stung, my parents taught me to be proud of who I was, without fetishizing my racial identity. I never felt like a victim. My parents spoke Dutch, but never insisted that I learn it (kinda wish they did). I never thought of myself as the child of immigrants until recently, and that only due to all the BS about "immigrants" and my late realization at how thoroughly my parents assimilated. I'm not a contentious person but all this woke crap really pisses me off. Posted by: Average Guy at June 29, 2020 11:56 AM (b2diN) 487

The proportion of privileged elites (defined as people of high education
and income) has been increasing at a geometric rate, while the proportion of oppressed minorities for them to lead has been decreasing at an arithmetic rate.... As the supply of oppressed minorities was decreasing, the demand for them was increasing. . . . To justify its aspirations for leadership, therefore, the privileged elite has a vested interest in crying (that society is) foul... Injustice in America grows apparently in direct proportion to efforts to alleviate it . . .The beauty of the search for the oppressed is that it generates its own growth. My husband used to hire a lot of Russian and Ukrainian workers in his sand blasting shop. They had one guy named Nicolas Christian. The workers mention him and say "Nicolas Christian but he's no Christian."

"ABC journalist": Well, there's her problem, right there!
If she wants anyone to give a flying fuck about what she thinks about anything, she should try earning an honest living. Yup, similar experience here.
My surname is Wood, everyone spells it Woods. What's funny, I 've met a few Woods, and they complain that everyone drops the S. If my life was so dull that I could make time to complain about this "injustice", I think I would kill myself. Just for the excitement. Posted by: Fen at June 29, 2020 01:24 PM (TNHVJ) 531
Hah. I have a last name that is composed of two english words that are in common usage.
There are NO alternate ways to say them taken individually. Yet for some reason, all my life, about 40% of people will mispronounce them inserting an additional letter or stretching one of the vowels so that it entirely different and annoying. I feel like a churl and petulant every time I have to correct them but in this day and age, a misspelled name could be hazardous to ones health or livelihood. I have yet to figure out what and why they do that. Posted by: jakee308 at June 29, 2020 01:26 PM (jnzLe) 532
My first name often used to be spelled Ronald and I used to be called Ron. An honor for me! But a problem for email.

I'm sorta back. I'll post an update about losing my buddy Splotchy McFatCat this evening.
I couldn't resist this Basic training story based on the thread and the butthurt from Mrs. "yourNameIsWhatTheFuck_I_SayItIS" In basic, way back when the PRC-77 was new Army Inventory, there was a kid from Puerto Rico going through with us. Dude had like five names and he was learning English the hard way at the same time. so he'd rattle off anibalguytearodrigues at a mores code rate of maybe 200 words per minute. Drill Sgt was "what the PHUCK did you just say?" and then the fun would begin. Hell it was fun for us too even if we were doing dude's pushups while he stuttered and cluster phucked up the spoken language. End of about 45 minutes of low crawling, cannon cockers, sugar cookies, and dying cockroaches later, dude's new name was "Ralph". Private "Ralph" wsa even introducing himself ten years later as "Ralph" with his rank in front of it. Still funny as all get out. Ace, thank you for the thread that made me smile again this week with a happy memory. Posted by: BifBewalski - Sinis Est Culus at June 29, 2020 01:46 PM (td8Ta) 536

I was wondering when someone would start saying something like this in public. Her name doesn't seem all that difficult. My wife teaches at a public school where many children have names that sound like common names everyone knows how to spell. But they are spelled in ways that no one would ever guess. I wonder sometimes if it's on purpose to trip people up. (She argues it's because parents want their kids to be unique.)

Evangeline Lilly and Taylor Kitchner. And thanks for that last one.
My real name is the same as the most infamous hurricane. Teachers have been misspelling and mispronouncing my surname ALL MY LIFE. I never felt oppressed. Instead, it was a lesson that many teachers are idiots and unable to deal with anyone outside their norm. Posted by: katya the designated driver at June 29, 2020 01:54 PM (m9yw7) 540
I have come up with the perfect solution to mispronouncing peoples names. Give them all a number. You know, like the Nazis did.

"Tahlea Aualiitia" you do know that employers misspelling their employees names is quiet common. About as common as when I reply and misspell a word here. But if you want to get the "minority" privilege you better hurry. According to PEW Research, interracial marriages are so common, vs in the 1960s, in another 20 - 40 years there won't be a race. Then, my dear Tahlea, what will be your next complaint. 1300 words to say nothing - wow - interesting life you have?

Met a guy named DeWane last week, he pronounces it Dwayne. He bitches about how dumb his mother was for naming him that way.
I've never had my last name spelled right in 60 years. Meh. No doubt Grandpa Drumph changed his name to Trump to avoid the same stupid issue. Posted by: Inspector Kemp at June 29, 2020 02:39 PM (8Xxh3) 544
I legally changed my surname from "Sacandy" to "Stamper" because I felt bad for people who were trying very hard to be polite and pronounce it correctly, but struggled with it.

I have had my, absurdly common, name "mispronounced".
My last name has two English pronunciations plus a German variant. They are still recognizable, even if they are not how I say my name. My first name has only one pronunciation. So then came first time a Hispanic receptionist called my name in a doctor's office, and I ignored it at first because I have no idea who they were calling. Nobody else got up, and a minute later I did a double take and realized it could be me so I went and checked. And so I learned my name could be said yet another one in Spanish. When I saw the doctor, he tried to give me attitude for why I did not come when my name was called. If only I had realized I had a claim for racial discrimination! My maiden name is Snider. I have seen every variation of its spelling when I used it, from Snyder to Schnieder etc etc. It is supposed to be pronounced as it's spelled for the most part, but I can't count how many times I heard people try to Germanize it and introduce an 'sh' sound at the beginning.
The misspellings and mispronunciations were common enough that I generally chalked it up to either people being lazy or just doing the best they could without more input. There's an extra step involved in asking someone how to properly spell it or say it and when you're in a hurry or have a long list to get through, it's much easier to just skip that step. I never took it for racism especially since people would generally put considerable effort into saying it correctly. The fact that people would try to Germanize it suggested that they were actually somewhat aware of the name's origin and wanted to say it correctly even if it wasn't spelled that way. I think the same is true of any name that is badly mispronounced or misspelled all the time. If you're going to berate people for making a mistake when they have limited information, are you instead going to insist they not use your name at all until they know your family history? This is ridiculous. Posted by: Pinkblue at June 29, 2020 05:25 PM (JQG3D) 550
Finally, a chance for the Polish people to finally start claiming some grievances..... since they're not allowed to complain about what Hitler and Stalin did to them.

My name is one letter different from "Todd", which no-one over the age of 5 would ever misspell. Yet the overwhelming majority of people who hear me say it and ask how it's spelled say, "D-O-D?". This irritant was so common that, for a couple of years in my college days, I often introduced myself as, "Dodd with 3 Ds". And don't even get me started on my WASP-y as all get out first name, which all of 2 people in my entire life have guessed the correct spelling of and barely a handful more have pronounced correctly upon seeing it written down.
But grievance mongers gotta monger. Posted by: Dodd at June 29, 2020 07:00 PM (FXSJA) Posted by: ChupaMe at June 29, 2020 10:31 PM (gSQqb) Processing 0.06, elapsed 0.0638 seconds. |
