The New York Times now profiles the neighborhood. Hey, if you've made your neighborhood too unsafe for your children to go outside just for Virtue Signalling, you're gonna want to contact the New York Times and get your Virtue Signalling out to a broader audience.

After the death of George Floyd at the hands of the police, Ms. Albers, who is white, and many of her progressive neighbors have vowed to avoid calling law enforcement into their community. Doing so, they believed, would add to the pain that black residents of Minneapolis were feeling and could put them in danger.

Already, that commitment is being challenged. Two weeks ago, dozens of multicolored tents appeared in the neighborhood park. They were brought by homeless people who were displaced during the unrest that gripped the city. The multiracial group of roughly 300 new residents seems to grow larger and more entrenched every day. They do laundry, listen to music and strategize about how to find permanent housing. Some are hampered by mental illness, addiction or both.
Their presence has drawn heavy car traffic into the neighborhood, some from drug dealers. At least two residents have overdosed in the encampment and had to be taken away in ambulances.

The influx of outsiders has kept Ms. Albers awake at night. Though it is unlikely to happen, she has had visions of people from the tent camp forcing their way into her home. She imagines using a baseball bat to defend herself.
Not being able to call the police, as she has done for decades, has shaken her.
"I am afraid," she said. "I know my neighbors are around, but I’m not feeling grounded in my city at all. Anything could happen."

Since the camp appeared, the community has organized shifts for delivering warm meals, medical care and counseling to people living in the park. They persuaded officials to back off an eviction notice served shortly after the campers arrived.
But many in the neighborhood, who were already beleaguered from the financial stresses of the coronavirus, now say they are eager for the campers to move on to stable housing away from the park.
"I'm not being judgmental," said Carrie Nightshade, 44, who explained that she no longer felt comfortable letting her children, 12 and 9, play in the park by themselves. "It's not personal. It's just not safe."

On Friday, she sat in a shared backyard with four other women who live in neighboring houses. The women, four of whom are white, had called a meeting to vent about the camp.

Angelina Roslik burst into tears, explaining that she had spent the past four years fleeing unstable housing conditions and was struggling more than she cared to admit with the chaos the camp had brought into the neighborhood. Linnea Borden said she had stopped walking her dog through the park because she was tired of being catcalled. "My emotions change every 30 seconds," said Tria Houser, who is part Native American....

But some people in the neighborhood have already found their best-laid plans to avoid calling the police harder to execute than they had imagined.
Last Thursday night, Joseph Menkevich found a black man wearing a hospital bracelet passed out in the elevator of his apartment building two blocks away from the park. Mr. Menkevich, who is white, quickly phoned a community activist but she did not pick up. He felt he had no choice but to call 911, so he did, but requested an ambulance only, not the police.

Unfortunately, he didn't wind up needing it.

I just don't see a realistic scenario where Trump gets the military involved to use lethal force and he comes out looking good.

It was more or less just a rap session. I didn't catch any real themes.

What I would like to see him speak on would be the beauty of Federalism. Then with that in mind he can hammer the blue states for virtually every aspect of what is wrong in America today and hit again and again that this is what America is about - let people vote for the party of their choice and get the results they deserve.

Every shithole in this country is democrats from the bottom (council / mayor) all the way up.

Don't be asking fro the red states to bail you out. See what works in other states and adopt it.

My first reaction was "hit back hard" but it shifted quickly, within a day or two, and became "you got the tools to do it, cities and states, you just don't want to do it" and since they don't want to do it, then to the devil with them. Experience with "Occupy Whatever" may have colored this reaction, letting them wear out there welcome seemed to be the best response.

414 This reminds me of a recent conference call I was on, and our VERY woke Director of HR was lamenting an incident with one of his good friends and neighbor, who had just been broken into. He apparently got a bunch of very expensive stuff stolen. Our HR guy was "disappointed" b/c his friend was wondering aloud if "whoever stole my stuff just needs it more than me." It was kind of hard to hear the rest of his comments, because the racket the tape-guns and movers were making in the background.

And just yesterday Barr said that on top of the "scores" of indictments already handed down against these people there are roughly 500 investigations going on right now of the rioters and looters. 500 is a pretty big number. That kind of stuff has been quietly ongoing all along. There have been pictures of FBI, ATF and other federal agents at these protests quietly going about their business floating around for some time now.

I think this is the right approach. Unilaterally going into sovereign states and acting against the wishes of the elected state and local governments seems to be the exact wrong response.

If CHAZ/CHOP is such a popular success with locals, why is the governor ending it? This whole thing will likely collapse once the short attention spans feel a little hardship. Don't take the bait and make it about Trump when it isn't.

As to the rest, I think that what you describe in the final paragraph was quite common in the 90s. Less so since then, but I agree that there is some legacy there. That opens up a whole can of worms around "conservatism" vs. "lassiez-faire" but that's probably going to be an argument regardless.

The double stabbing (one dead) in downtown Minneapolis was literally outside the door of the office building I used to work in. Hennepin Avenue was already a war zone and Nicollet Mall, despite all the money they spent to spruce it up for the Super Bowl, was heading in the same direction when I moved away two years ago.

It seems to me that a contributing factor in all of these protests and riots is the fact that these downtowns are now deserted. I have trouble believing that all of this could occur under normal circumstances.

552 the thing many don't seem to realize about the Civil War is that the two sides had pretty much everything in common other than a few really big and consequential issues.. They had the same religion, same work ethic, same fables and stories. They had the identical belief that America was ordained by God as THE exceptional nation. They revered the same founders, spoke the same language, and admired the same qualities in a person.

Yet these people tore each other to shreds for four years and one part of the country was laid to waste. Today, the Left and Right share nothing in common. Rush mentioned this fact just yesterday/

Trump is forcing local politicians to deal with the messes they've created.

If he gets involved, the local politicians will then hang all of the problems around his neck, and will swear that everything was just fine until the Feds were called in.

It'd be a deus ex machina that would save their political careers. They'd be able to embrace the shitheads, and make the issue Trump vs. The People, in true commie fashion.

They can't do that now. Eventually the law-abiding residents are going to insist that the local politicians deal with the shitheads, which will be harder for the commies to exploit.

This is my theory as well.

As I mentioned yesterday, each Governor has their own police, state police and national guard they can call on to take care of things like this. There is no fucking excuse for a Governor or a Mayor to allow this shit to happen.

Trump needs to state this loudly and clearly. That the local Governors and Mayors have it within their power to stop this and they *choosing* to stand down their entire state's law enforcement.

This is ALL on the Governors/Mayors.

The reason they are allowing this stuff to go on and not doing a damn thing about it is because they are daring Trump to do something and then will do exactly as you stated: claim everything was fine until Trump stepped in and escalated everything. And the media will tout that message as well.

Trump is doing the right thing. Sit back and let the Governors and Mayors expose themselves as completely incompetent. Then Trump can push the message that "this is what happens under Democrat rule".
