The Saturday Night Joke

Two Southern Illinois farmers, Jim and Bob, are sitting at their favorite bar, drinking beer.

Jim turns to Bob and says, "You know, I'm tired of going through life without an education. Tomorrow I think I'll go to the Community College and sign up for some classes."

Bob thinks it's a good idea, and the two leave. The next day, Jim goes down to the college and meets Dean of Admissions, who signs him up for the four basic classes:.........Math, English, History, and Logic.

"Logic?" Jim says. "What's that?"

The dean says, "I'll give you an example. Do you own a weed eater?"

"Yeah."

"Then logically speaking, because you own a weed eater, I think that you would have a yard."

"That's true, I do have a yard."

"I'm not done," the dean says. "Because you have a yard, I think logically that you would have a house."

"Yes, I do have a house."

"And because you have a house, I think that you might logically have a family."

"Yes, I have a family."

"I'm not done yet. Because you have a family, then logically you must have a wife. And because you have a wife, then logic tells me you must be a heterosexual."

"I am a heterosexual. That's amazing, you were able to find out all of that because I have a weed eater."

Excited to take the class now, Jim shakes the Dean's hand and leaves to go meet Bob at the bar. He tells Bob about his classes, how he is signed up for Math, English, History, and Logic.

"Logic?" Bob says, "What's that?"

Jim says, "I'll give you an example. Do you have a weed eater?"

"No."

"Then you're a queer... "

Adios Segway.

Steve Jobs said it would be bigger than the PC. Some dubbed it the most hyped product since the Apple Macintosh. An era of secrecy bubbled up in the year 2000 about an invention that would change the world as people knew it. People speculated it was a hydrogen-powered hovercraft, or a device that would break the rules of gravity itself.

Instead, it was a two-wheeled, self-balancing personal transport device called the Segway. Created over the course of a decade by Dean Kamen, a man already made impossibly rich by inventing a key technology behind medical IVs in his basement, it was released in December 2001 for $5,000 (the cost of a low-end motorcycle, despite the fact that a Segway’s top speed was 10 mph). At the time, Kamen said it would be “to the car what the car was to the horse and buggy.

Before the digital age struck, I used Olympia 35mm cameras daily. The digital age has taken another camera maker out.

Olympus — the maker of cameras you may or may not own, but are most likely aware of — has given up. The company sold its camera division to Japan Industrial Partners (JIP), an investment fund that seems to enjoy sucking up almost obsolete tech, as it did with Sony’s VAIO.

This comes hot on the heels of Olympus claiming that it definitely wasn’t going to sell its camera business just over a year ago.

There are various reasons Olympus is jettisoning its camera business. One is that the company now makes the majority of its money from creating medical equipment. Another is that the company’s cameras have been losing cash over the past three years.

This, according to the company, is partly down to the “rapid [camera] market shrink caused by the evolution of smartphones.” It states that it “implemented measures to cope” with this hostile environment, but those, clearly, were nowhere near enough to save it.

Bourbon. The ultimate father & son business. Who knew? You will soon find out.

When you hear the story of whisky, it inevitably involves family. Even in bourbon, which doesn’t quite have the centuries-long history and tradition of, say, Scotch.

American history’s whiskey glass is filled with stories of fathers and sons — and the occasional and hopefully growing number of interested daughters — so this Father’s Day, we reached out to them to ask why the brown-spirits industry is so likely to attract multi-generations of family interest.

“Bourbon is something that’s handed down from generation to generation, or at least it was for me in Kentucky,” explains Jefferson’s founder and Chief Strategist Trey Zoeller. And it wasn’t just about his whiskey historian dad. “Just about everything my grandmother cooked was smothered in bourbon — and if you went to her house, she didn’t ask what you wanted to drink, but rather, how do you take your bourbon.”

“I think whiskey is a very personal business and very relationship oriented,” adds Angel’s Envy Co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer Wes Henderson, who founded the brand with his father and now has several sons working alongside him. “If you look back, the bourbon industry has really been upheld by a handful of family brands — large and small — making the family dynamic ingrained in whiskey culture.”

Men. You can live with them and you can't throw pizzas at them. And, sometimes you just have to man up. Two-For-The-Price of One Genius Award Winners.

Ybarra, who is described as Bartlett’s ex-girlfriend, appears to share the home with her.

Upon returning to the residence after 3 AM, Ybarra began to “cook himself a pizza,” which upset Bartlett, who was sleeping on the living room couch.

Bartlett then allegedly walked over to the oven, extracted the pizza, and threw it at Ybarra. The pizza struck Ybarra’s hand, “causing a minor burn,” cops report. When officers responded to the home, they noted that Ybarra “suffered visible injury and had food on his pant leg consistent with his statements.”

Bartlett was arrested for domestic battery, a misdemeanor, and booked into the county jail. She was released from custody Tuesday afternoon on her own recognizance. A judge has ordered Bartlett to have no contact with Ybarra, barred her from possessing firearms or ammunition, and prohibited her from leaving the county without court permission.

Ybarra also ended up in handcuffs after a computer check revealed that he was the subject of a fugitive warrant issued in Colorado, where he was charged in 2016 with a felony marijuana distribution count. Ybarra, who appears to have jumped a $50,000 bond in the Colorado case, is now being held without bond in the Pinellas County jail in Clearwater.

I'll say something like, "Well, that's how it all stops" and he'll say something like "We dropped the ball when we told you that you were masters. We were hoping you'd learn from us, from everyone, really, but you kind if insisted that you started it all. (Shrug). Hey, the treats were great. 133 A naive maiden had become betrothed to a man of a certain ethnicity which, at the time, was rumoured to have a great preference for the practice of buggery... And thus, friends and family all had warned her about "the third hole" and such, should her future husband try to take advantage of her innocence...

Anyway, after the couple had been married a month or so, friends and family had occasion to meet with the new wife alone, and they asked her straight out if, in fact, her husband had attempted to claim "the third hole"...

"Alas, no..." she said, and she continued,

"I had implored... No, I literally begged my husband, on numerous occasions during our moments of marital intimacy, to do precisely that -- to take the third hole, but I am to be denied unto this day..."

Her callers were aghast not so much by the admission but by her candour about it...

"And besides", the young woman went on, "my husband says that if we do that, I might become pregnant, and we just simply cannot afford to start a family right now!"

100' cord will cover anything on my property, and the 'eater has been working like a champ for more'n ten years, now.

Doesn't weigh much, and maintenance has been right at "zero" thus far.

Kind of the polar-opposite of a Turbo-Diesel weed eater. Which would be the ultimate, except that I'm not 6'7" and 300 lbs. ripped muscle. Which is what a Turbo-Diesel powered weed eater would need to work the damn thing.

Maybe a Nitro Fueled Hemi powered weed eater would be a dozen pounds lighter. I'll look for AOP to weigh-in on the topic?

Muldoon: Now you have to tell the story. Can't just leave that one hanging out there.

Ah, Seamus, the celeb encounter stories I could tell! This one is relatively lame. (well, they all are)

Santa Fe, NM, 1977 or 78, the last days of a failing attempt at an A/V production studio. The set-up is, the building we rented for our studio was in the middle of the downtown train yards. Usually not a problem, but...

Donald S came by with a very hot French gal. Wanted to record her singing. We did our best with limited resources. We got a couple of cuts done before a slight glitch: the RR decided to pull up and park an engine next to our building that night - and they don't turn those rumbling things off. Session cut short.

I don't think it mattered. I supposed that DS's interest was not exclusively about promoting the young lady's career. IYKWIMAITTYD.

Still have his sig on the order form, somewhere in the catacombs.

Italy looks to be on the verge of explosion. Both the political establishment and the people at large are becoming anti-EU. The inchoate populist-leftoid Five-Sar Movement has collapsed. Matteo Salvini's nationalist Lega is being outflanked . . . by the even more nationalist Brothers of Italy.

I'm mildly intrigued by this movie, and not because Gerald Butler (now with Dad Bod) is showing his usual acting range of playing characters with Scottish accents. It looks like a mix of Deep Impact/Armageddon with one focus on a family trying to survive an ELE instead of the 4 foci we got with Deep Impact. Bonus points if the movie uses more public service announcements to creepy effect like this did in the trailer with the "Seek shelter immediately" message.

It is just a Cold War now, with extra-added Hot Spots.

The polls are nonsense. In the last 4 years, I was polled for Pres preference twice. I smeared PDT's name both times. And threw in some other leftist crap I can't remember now, like LBGQT rights, and abortion for all.

I lied like a rug.

I almost thought I was going to get busted, or they would say, "aw come on!, you don't really believe that, do you?"

But no. Gullible, crazy, stupid, what ever you want to call poll takers today.

Twice.

267 I'm mildly intrigued by this movie, and not because Gerald Butler (now with Dad Bod) is showing his usual acting range of playing characters with Scottish accents.

Trump has given us a taste of how to laugh at the opposition but it's still a somewhat righteous laughter rather than the banal sadism they inflict on us daily.

Not acceptable to threaten any church but I hope that this is not the St Louis cathedral they threaten. I found it to be an architecturally beautiful quiet place in which to pray or just sit and rest while a student in the city.

I bought a Troy-built 4 stroke weed eater. pretty pleased with it.

You know what would cat's ass for weed-eaters? Hybrids. Small gasoline or Diesel engine, on a backpack running a tiny generator. Electric weedeater, with a tiny battery, good for 5 minutes tops (ultracapacitor, maybe), plugged into it. Engine idles unless there is current demand, and then kicks in. Result? Most of the mass is on your back; the power head weighs next to nothing, and it will run all day on a tank of fuel.

Posted by: Cheriebebe at June 27, 2020 11:47 PM (w6A0l)

Hmm... I will give you my focaccia recipe. It is so easy and what it creates is amazing. Doesn't take a lot of effort, just time (mostly waiting). I always said that if I was going to teach a bread course, I would start people with the focaccia because when people ate it they wouldn't believe they made it themselves. I'm pretty sure actually that this one is just a tweak of someone else's recipe rather than my own invention.

It gets made on a parchment lined cookie sheet. A version of it might make a decent pizza dough but focaccia itself gets dredged in olive oil whereas pizza dough would not.

The best pizza dough I ever made was actually the Jim Lahey no-knead dough. You bang everything together and wait like 24 hours and then use it. Again the effort-to-quality ratio is outstanding. IMO you don't get great pizza at home unless you bake HOT. Hot as your oven goes. Had a lot of luck with using a pizza steel. The damn things are heavy and unwieldy but light years better than stone. You have to really want to make pizza.

461 Cherie - here is Jim Lahey No-Knead Pizza Dough. You don't have to make four dough balls. Just use like half of the recipe and make one pizza. I can't remember how large that is. You may have a good idea yourself when you see the listed amounts.

https://tinyurl.com/ydhk3nvc

I cannot recommend the following enough: Diastatic Malt Powder. You use half a teaspoon to a teaspoon in most standard bread recipes. You will get a huge improvement. I would use maybe half a teaspoon if making half of the above recipe.

I get mine from King Arthur but they are out of stock. There are other retailers. It will make a tremendous difference to your bread.

And you have to weigh your flour always but I'm guessing you already do.

486 I was just reading at another site about the 1970s civil war in the UK between Thatcher's government and the Mining Unions, particularly a nasty leftist leader named Scargill.

Long story short, it looks like the unions-- and the left in the UK-- became so unreasonable and intransigent, that public opinion (which I believe has skewed left for decades and decades there) couldn't help but end up on Maggie's side, even though I believe BBC was openly disdainful of the Tory government.

The only question left today is, why couldn't Thatcher have at least provided a safety net for unemployed miners? (It's kind of obvious the unions did so much screaming, no one else cared after a while if the career-less Britons ended up dying of hunger and boredom rather than ever being 'made whole' by training programs.)

The mining unions basically struck themselves out of a job. Underground coal mining was becoming hugely unprofitable, anyway. Miners going out on strike for specious reasons wasn't helping any.

They didn't have safety nets for buggy whip makers, either.

496 I've been a dyed-in-the-wool Nikon user since the mid '70s. That said, I always admired the Olympus OM system.

Small, neat, efficient. A most "jewelry-like" camera in it's execution. And the Zukio lenses were, and are, superb.

Still, running a Nikon as a pro system up until the rise of the Canon DSLR, was pretty much the same as running a Glock 17 for the first 20 years of the Tupperware Gun.

It's what you did to ensure you had plenty of backup, and near-anywhere access to a bewildering array of lenses, accessories and other things. This worked to keep a working photographer behind the viewfinder, and not at the repairman's counter.

Canon's excellent F-1 system was competitive, but failed to evolve to compete against Nikon F-2, F-3 & F-4 platforms.

Advantage in many ways, still lies with Nikon, in that those lenses can be backwards compatible, all the way back to the AI-S mount, and earlier the (then) available AI-S factory conversion was performed.

Alas, Canon *had* to dump their bull-strong lens mount system, as it simply couldn't be forward-adapted to work with autofocus and later digital interfaces.

Today's Canon lenses are *far* better than they were in the '70s & '80s. Worthy competitor to Nikon, in every way. And they own a HUGE share of the Pro market, which they never achieved in the film era.

Hidden sleeper in the camera world? Fujinon lenses. Frankly, Fuji is basically selling more DLSR bodies under the SONY name these days.

If they really wanted to make bank though, they'd pay the licensing fees, and sell lenses with the user's choice of Nikon or Canon mount systems.

I've never worked with a Fujinon lens that was anything less than spectacular. My enlarger *always* had a Fujinon lens on it. None better in it's day.

Posted by: qdpsteve at June 28, 2020 12:52 AM (L2ZTs)

Tamron, like Tokina, can produce some world class glass. I find the Tokina to be more to my liking, usually.

My bias against Tamron has nothing to do with the glass or the images it'll produce. I've just never liked the way they set in my hand.

Their choices of materials, textures, layout and printed scales on the lens barrel, has always been *meh*, to me.

Tokina is run by a rebel cabal of ex Nikon engineers who got sick of being roadblocked on new ideas, new materials and the like.

Not a technical analysis here. I just like using their stuff, better.

Fake observation, there. Okay, well, not "on-target", anyway.

Olympus was as quick to be "digital" as anyone. The OM-D was their Pro DSLR, loosely based on OM-2 architecture.

My first two "point n' shoot" digital pocket cameras were Olympus, and they were FAR more reliable than any of the Nikon Coolpix series.

But sadly, the advent of very high quality lenses in smart phones, coupled with insanely advanced digital processing techniques, has KILLED the "consumer" level, stand-alone digital camera.

Aside from the highest end makers such as Hasselblad and Leica, it has ALWAYS been the consumer grade, and mid level "pro-sumer" grade cameras that've under-written the enormous R&D and higher manufacturing costs of PRO level SLR and DSLR systems.

Kind of like, if there is no Ford F-150 for sale to the General Public, then there's also no Ford Racing of ANY kind being fielded, sponsored or supported.

Have to have the huge Bread & Butter sales to further subsidize the boutique Deli loaves, cheeses and meats.

At their height in the '80s & '90s, Olympus' share of the PRO market was always a single or very LOW double-digit percentage of the whole.

I'm one of the few willing to pay upwards of $1,500 for a lightly *used* Nikon Df, DSLR camera body. Just a bit more than MSRP for an iPhone 11, but the Nikon has lousy cel reception, and won't be popular with the masses.

534 Got a good dose of mowing done today. Last time out, the drive belt to the mower deck was slipping real badly, so I pulled the belt off, an easy job, no tools needed. Belt was in sad shape; cracked in several places. So I took one of my old belts, slathered it with belt dressing from a spray can, and mowed for three hours. It did real fine. Towards the end of the session, I was noticing some belt slip again, as I was negotiating patches of that nasty Prairie Wool grass.

I have two areas left to mow. If the weather tomorrow permits, I'll dope up the belt with another does of belt dressing, and get 'er done.

The deck drive belt is a 5L780, 78" top length. Maybe I will try a 5L770, an inch shorter, and see if it fits. The idler really puts a big bend in the slack side of the belt.

The scene is intended to shock the inexperienced . You'd probably be surprised how much time is spent (or least used to be) training soldiers to kill without mercy. It isn't something you can think about.

People break down from being a part of it.

John Masters in 'The Road Past Mandalay' describes killing his own wounded, rather than leaving them to be tortured by the Japs.

War is a horror beyond description, and beyond imagination. It ain't like the movies. If you encounter a Vet with combat experience, just do not ask.

544 thathalfrican I don't even recall the scene. But yes, we had, and have, standards.

Am most of the way through "Light of Dawn", a colorized film documentary on D-Day, and German POWs are getting first aid right alongside the American wounded.

In Okinawa, the US had medical units specifically formed to care for civilians. Dedicating resources, going into yet another brutal bloody battle with an enemy generally unconstrained either by modern treaty principles or basic humanity in battle, just to care for non-combatants.

Might have missed it, but I am unaware of anything like that in human history.

And I can tell you in current day those standards remain.

My father made a gutter cleaner that really worked well. It was a long aluminum tubing wand, long enough to reach the gutters from the ground, with a U-bend at the top end. He threaded the top end, and screwed in a brass jet nozzle, with a bore of about 3/16 inch. The bottom end was fitted with a coupler to fit it to a garden hose. The resulting water jet was sufficiently powerful to blast leaves and the gravelly sludge of clay chips shed off the shingles clean out of the rain gutters. No ladders needed.

I asked him if he carried a carbine or a Garand. "Garand", he replied, "Less chance of wounding, and, we did not take prisoners. "

He was one hell of guy. Here's a rather self-effacing story, which I have linked to before: https://tinyurl.com/ybd67b4j

and a pic https://tinyurl.com/yay2clzw

His brother, Jim, (now deceased also) took an MG round in his arm in France. Kept the arm, but even after a couple of years in/out of VA care, it was never useful. Both were Citadel cadets.

So are the testers telling people they have the flu when they don't or just recording that they have it?

Not an issue. I don't think I've ever spent more than an hour at a buffet, and most of the time was spent talking with the people I went with.

I once way over ate at one, and the regret was...um...physically apparent shortly after leaving the restaurant. Didn't think I'd over indulged, but my stomach said I'd gone over the occupancy capacity. ^^U

So cashew chicken is a favorite?

The buffet that was here when we moved back to WI closed down by order of health dept. We went there occasionally and it was always good.

They reopened under a new name, only was there once, not that great, selections were really small and they put out very small quantities at a time which made you feel like you couldn't fill your plate.

One of the ones I like closed for over a year or so. The wife of the owner was involved in some pretty big criminal charges.

Not sure if the re-open is the same owner, but they made major updates to the seating and offerings, including a sushi bar (which I think I'm still not supposed to visit under Doctor's orders) and a Hibachi.

One restaurant I went to had finally reopened and had built a box into their door like you see at labs. A door on each side and only one side opened at a time. So you stood on the sidewalk while they had to walk from the box inside to the register which was still on the counter they had to walk around, then come back.

From the door though I don't think looked like the time they were closed was spent cleaning though. ^^U
