NYU Business Professor: Covid Has Begun a Long-Overdue Collapse of the American Education System, and They Deserve Everything They're Going to Get
Two videos of him, below, making the same basic points. He's on shows hosted by people you wil not like (Amanapour, Cooper), but he's worth listening to.
His basic notion is this: American education has long been absurdly overpriced. He notes this is the only industry in America which has yet to face significant pressures to cost-cut. He says that parents are getting to see what their $76,000 per year is buying them-- because now they can see the witless profs lecturing to their kids on the Zoom sessions they have online. And parents are thinking: "This is worthless. I am spending $300,000 for something absolutely worthless." Not just worthless -- in addition to the debt, there are four years (at least) of lost wages and lost experience to consider. He also notes that many students -- maybe the most in recent history -- will decide to skil college next year, because college might not even be all the way open. Many will take "a gap year." This will cause many colleges to go bankrupt. The top tier schools, he notes, will be fine, because 1, they're sittting on billions of dollars in endowments (which he thinks should be taxed -- and so do I) and 2, because they have long, long wait lists, and they can grab up as many just-as-good-as-our-first-pick students as are needed. Second tier schools will have to dig down deeper into the wait lists and will have to admit students that would not be considered qualified in normal years, but most of them will be fine. (Most.) But third tier schools do not have waiting lists, and all the students that would have gone to them will be going to second tier schools. They will go bankrupt. He says that education will face what every other industry has faced, a bunch of weak concerns going bankrupt and pressure to cost-cut for the rest. Some second tier schools will go bankrupt or at least will be forced into drastic changes: specifically, second-rate schools that charge very high tuition. And I know America has a lot of those. The high tuition doesn't seem to be justified except to exclude less wealthy students from a school that isn't really exclusive in any way except for having an exclusive pricetag.Jonah Goldberg's beloved alma mater Goucher College might soon see its final few semesters.

As he noted the top schools are wealthy beyond words, $ literally no issue for them, for decades, or ever, without a single student.
And state schools - equally toxic and disastrous in most respects - will be bailed out almost everywhere.
And no way there's more than 1/2 year missed. Many systems have already announced fall semester is on, as they're not idiots and recognize the flu is literally a non-issue for the student demo, and just a flu for anyone else under 65.
So, can't really get excited about this.
Even more pessimistic addendum: anyone think that 1/2 to one year of mild financial pain for one slice of colleges will have any, any impact whatsoever on the toxic miseducation/indoctrination they now provide? Didn't think so.

After 4 years of high school, do 3 years of service....Military, sweeping streets, digging ditches, what ever...then decide on what you want to study ( if anything ) and study THAT and only THAT and at a community college. Very much like they do in Israel.

The thing is that, after two decades of intersections hiring practices, the big schools have an ethnically diverse and largely female faculty that can't teach, can't write, and can't research. All the talent has been pushed into these smaller schools. The result is that not only are these small colleges much cheaper, but the quality of instruction is demonstratively superior. The classes are much smaller, as well. And not insanely politically partisan, as well.
I'll put my local, little American History or Archaeology class against anything taught at Harvard. It's a first-tier course.

If it's as bad as I fear, in practice, it will sort of be the final collapse of any real governance when it comes to $$.
It will take the disastrous national model, in which the US uses its unique position as the world's reserve currency and best/biggest capital market to essentially print money/incur debt without any constraint or limit whatever, to fund federal deficits - and for the first time provide the same to states.
We'll see. But that is clearly what IL, NY, CA, WA, and many other horribly mismanaged states want. And nothing the Fed has done since 2008 has shown any trace of sense or responsibility.

I was going to do the same with my hard earned money for a certain younger family member, but that person messed up big time and the spigot is now closed.

I was going to toss in a more generic comment, and one of concern, that losing smaller colleges would in fact greatly damage the country, as those places *probably in many cases are vastly superior, and actually provide an education/not indoctrination*.
Keith I'm certain you are absolutely correct about the quality your institution provides - and I hope against hope there are many small schools like yours. And that's the only segment of the market I have any concern about.

Before University, people were educated by patrons, by apprenticeships, or by seeking out knowledge. University has become a place to hide out for four years, except in the marketable disciplines that require actual work, not make work.

The thing is that, after two decades of intersections hiring practices, the big schools have an ethnically diverse and largely female faculty that can't teach, can't write, and can't research. All the talent has been pushed into these smaller schools. The result is that not only are these small colleges much cheaper, but the quality of instruction is demonstratively superior. The classes are much smaller, as well. And not insanely politically partisan, as well.
I'll put my local, little American History or Archaeology class against anything taught at Harvard. It's a first-tier course.

My experience with two very rural Southeastern colleges supports exactly what you say.
Two gainfully employed, conservative kids and another on the way. All have had a great experience and received excellent educations at their tiny little colleges, while their peers went off to "Universiteh" and were transformed into purple-haired , face-pierced leftist drones.

But it's unsustainable. These are small religious colleges and there is just not the market for it. It's not sustainable for how the number of schools there are and it's consolidating.

plus, we are hitting a 'baby bust" because we Xers hit two recessions early in our careers, and didn't tend to be able to afford large families.
even now colleges are dependent on foreign students and that is coming to a hard stop. a lot of Euro parents are not feeling very comfortable sending Inga here anymore.

My daughter went to Stanford Law and worked her ass off. I suppose Law School may differ from undergrad, but I expect those kids still work very hard, because that's what they know. It matters if you're in STEM or "studies" of course, but that's true at every university.

I went to a small private college in the mid-70s. My mother worked there so my tuition was waived, which tells you something about tuitions back then.
I was a chemistry major and did two years of undergraduate research, from which I got a publication in a good journal.
In short, you get the education you work for.

Yep. The idea, at least at UC, has been to admit various totally unqualified people* to do bogus majors, while also admitting a bunch of Chinese students who pay overseas tuition (yum!) and maintain to some extent the academic reputation of the UC campuses.
*When CA got rid of its exit exam, a ridiculously easy exam (per my kids) taken in the sophomore year of HS, and testing 10th grade grasp of English and eighth grade grasp of mathematics, the LAT featured kids gushing that now they could take up their place at, e.g., Berkeley. Because after flunking the test in their sophomore, junior, and senior years (same test, multiple shots on goal) they couldn't attend Berkeley.
But once the test was eliminated, it was "Cal, here I come!" Temporarily, at least.

Can someone explain schools like Bryn Mawr to me? No engineering or the
like, less difficult to get into than Duke or UNC, and still $250K+?
I wonder if it's like the old Brit aristocracy. If you're worth a damn, you go to Hahhhhvad (Oxbridge). If not, well there's always Bryn Mawr (Edinburgh), where you can mingle with other mediocrities of your class.

The universities dropping the SAT have not thought this through, which doesn't surprise me because they're run by idiots.
Whether they realize it or not, they're moving toward the Ohio State model, which takes all comers, but then applies a vicious attrition rate. I can't imagine that that makes for a happy environment.
The alternative is to have a bunch of watered-down courses, but in my experience with UC's various spasms of admitting ghetto kids, they drop out quickly even from watered-down courses because they're bored.
So, if you're not to screen for academic skills, how to avoid blowing a hole in the student body? Over-admit, and then weed them out (or let them weed themselves out) later.

I was just going to post that a Michigan State grad did the math several years ago and determined it was in the late 90's that tuition, fees, room and board, etc. at Michigan State went up to the point that you couldn't do the traditional work during the summer and maybe 10 hours a week during school and pay your way through.

Friend runs a summer institute that normally has interesting visa challenges as they bring in people from all over the world, especially f***ed up conflict zones - thing is already cancelled, so can't use his data to get a read on the visa thing.
But I noted right after Trump's statement last week on Chi-Nah that we'd just seen the big course change on China policy, no more "compartmentalizing" trade from everything else. All on the table now. I would hope/expect that to include the Chinese student issue, a massive security and economic and sovereignty issue in its own right.

I am a traditionalist. I graduated from a small Southern women's college called Sweet Briar in the mid-80s. It faced closing and arose like a phoenix. It has a terrific program for women, including engineering. The campus is beautiful and safe.
If your daughters are looking for a true education, check it out.
PS. in my years at college, I never heard any of my professor ever mention anything political.

There are already job postings going up of people looking for governesses. Oh, it's listed as private educator but that's what it is.
It makes sense. If you have three kids, it would be cheaper to pay someone, say, $40k and room and board, rather than three sets of private school tuition. Plus you don't have to pay for day care. You'll come out ahead.

I don't know if they still work this way, but community colleges used to be great for people who wanted the practical understanding of the field. Turns out a lot of instructors were teaching as a second job that they enjoyed and were enthusiastic about, and their regular job was in said field out in the real world.

That only works if you aren't still on the hook for the tax bill to keep the school system afloat. I know lots of people who both pay high taxes and private school tuition, the latter of which can be as expensive as college.

Wayne State University was a commuter-friendly college in the mid-to-late '90s. The president, David Adamani, kept tuition increases low and put money into restoring existing buildings (e.g. the original college building with its Art Deco tile). Because of that, students could actually write off part of their tuition on state taxes - which was great.
As soon as he left, tuition was raised AND fees were added that had no benefit to commuters or evening-class students. I paid for parking lots that closed early (the high-rise parking structure cost $1 to $2 a day and was an easy, safe walk from almost any building). I paid for a rec center that had faculty-only hours at the only times I could have used it. And the increase was such that it exceeded the state tax limits.

It makes sense. If you have three kids, it would be cheaper to pay someone, say, $40k and room and board, rather than three sets of private school tuition. Plus you don't have to pay for day care. You'll come out ahead.

At my last full time job I was a court clerk. A real butch looking girl came before the judge with a request for legal name change. Being friendly, the judge noted that she was a student at Rutgers, and asked her what her major was. I am a traditionalist. I graduated from a small Southern women's college called Sweet Briar in the mid-80s. It faced closing and arose like a phoenix. It has a terrific program for women, including engineering. The campus is beautiful and safe.
If your daughters are looking for a true education, check it out.
PS. in my years at college, I never heard any of my professor ever mention anything political.

My stint at CC was about 15 years ago now, but yes, that was how it worked then. Most of the instructors in my chosen field were retired from actually working in the industry, and had a lot of real, practical knowledge.

I had a couple of adjunct professors who were engineers at Lockheed. It wasn't too unusual for them to assign as problems elements of specific work that they had done.
I recall one that involved the fire control system for the Cobra gunship. But, let's face it, not nearly as significant or meaningful as Gender Studies.

The thing is that, after two decades of intersections hiring practices, the big schools have an ethnically diverse and largely female faculty that can't teach, can't write, and can't research. All the talent has been pushed into these smaller schools. The result is that not only are these small colleges much cheaper, but the quality of instruction is demonstratively superior. The classes are much smaller, as well. And not insanely politically partisan, as well.
I'll put my local, little American History or Archaeology class against anything taught at Harvard. It's a first-tier course.

This is in contrast to medical schools, which limit the supply of doctors by having small medical school classes and a smallish supply of schools.

He suggests that as one option. I see nothing about mandatory service. I do not know about Israel, but I did three years in the U.S. Army, quite voluntarily. Probably the single wisest move I ever made.

And you further made my point here: you did three years in the U.S. Army, quite voluntarily. That's the way it should be. (As is my USAF service, which incidentally paid for my bachelor's and master's.)
If he's talking about voluntary options, fine, but when I see "service" and "like they do in Israel" - a country with a draft, and many countries around the world maintain they have a claim to their citizens' labor - red flags go up.
