Even as Public is Locked Down With Little to Do But Watch TV, Cord Cutting "Explodes" and Pay TV Is Hit With Its Worst Losses Ever

Oh no...

Not the media...

LEARN TO CODE.

This article is actually three weeks old, but it's new to me!

Also, it's about general trends which are continuing.

Traditional cable and satellite TV providers posted their most massive quarterly subscriber losses in the first three months of 2020, as the COVID-19 tornado started to hit the U.S. economy in March. What's more, internet-delivered "virtual" TV providers registered a net loss in the period, too.

Oh no, TV took a hit on the internet too?

Oh no!

And the cord-cutting bleeding is only going to get worse in Q2, as the economic fallout from the coronavirus takes a deeper bite, analysts predict.

The combination of high prices -- amid the backdrop of record unemployment -- as well as loss of live sports fueled an overall drop of 1.8 million pay-TV subscribers in Q1, per estimates by Wall Street analyst firm MoffettNathanson. That translates into an annual rate of decline of 7.6%, the fastest shrinkage of the sector on record.

"At 63% of occupied households, traditional pay TV penetration has reached a level not previously seen since roughly 1995," analyst Craig Moffett wrote in a research note Friday. "There are now as many non-subscribing households (46M) as there were pay TV subscribers in 1988."

The Hollywood Reporter wrote about this yesterday, stressing that the Great Turn Off will accelerate, not diminish.

The rise in unemployment due to the novel coronavirus pandemic led to a new record in pay TV subscriber losses in the first quarter of 2020, and one pay TV analyst on Thursday predicted cord-cutting would accelerate further.

"We see cord-cutting as a secular trend that likely will kick into high gear during and on the other side of COVID-19," Wells Fargo's Jennifer Fritzsche wrote in a report. "With this belief in mind, we have moved our estimates for residential video subscriber losses lower across our cable coverage" to be "worse than Street for 2020 and 2021."

For example, she still projects Comcast to lose nearly 1.79 million pay TV subscribers in 2020, followed by 1.37 million in 2021, up from her previous estimate for a loss of 1.00 million users.

Comcast is a major cable provider and parent company of NBC Propaganda Operations.

The analyst says her "stress tests" modeling accelerating cord-cutting do not "spell doomsday" for the financial health of the media and cable providers.

But... all of her scenarios are bad, and the worst ones are "really bad."

Learn to code, bitches. Learn to fucking code.

Oh that's right, you're too stupid to code.

Learn to dumpster-hunt, bitches. Learn to fucking dumpster-hunt.

9 Concerning Parler in the sidebar. Our oligarch masters will just have Parler shut down if they ever become a threat to their propaganda. To prevent that the Parler people will just need to also create their own internet and banking infrastructure. An army, navy, and air force probably wouldn't hurt either.

Also, I never, ever watch any TV news, ever.

63 Now that a lot of the stuff I watch on TV is also over-the-air, as soon as I can get a modern TV and an antenna, I'm ditching the cable too. The Weather Channel is about the only thing that's kept me hanging on. Nowadays they print the local conditions on a tiny chyron at the bottom of the screen, run all these original programs like "So You Think You'd Survive?" instead of telling me the f'ing weather, and don't even run the Local on the 8s very often any more.

Once upon a time, cable was Where It's At. It was the only way to get a decent picture and more than 3-4 channels' worth of content. TBS used to run classic movies before Turner tossed them all to TCM, and HBO actually showed films you'd want to watch.

Not no mo'.

It was a justifiable expense at $50, but at $72, it is a much more bitter pill to swallow for how relatively little I use it. And I can get OAN for like $50 a year or something like that.

But I can pick up a lot of classic films from YouTube and via my local libraries without paying $100/month for cable.

The only problem might be that I have my Internet through the same company as the cable. When I cut the latter, they may jack my price up on the former, and I'll have to search for another provider. May not be easy.

Gab is free speech absolutist whereas Parler isn't. Note: I'm not saying Parler is bad, they just clamp down on more than Gab does. Gab only kills people who do things which are illegal.

As a result of this absolutism, however, there's a good bit of out in the open racism and anti-semitism at Gab. It's easy enough to block the asshats who're doing it but it got Gab a reputation as being icky.

It still exists, and it's still growing, but I suspect that Parler will become more mainstream for good or ill.

Lying face-down on a hard surface with your hands behind you makes it hard to breath on its own. Add in pressure and weight, and it gets worse. Having difficulty breathing for a long period of time isn't "strangulation" but it is *very* bad for you.

True.

I'm just reminded of a story from a friend who was a police dispatcher. A guy was brought in high on PCP. They tasered him twice and he still didn't go down. It took four burly cops to get him subdued and his arms behind his back so they could arrest him. He, naturally, died of the drugs combined with a heart condition.

The press tried to blame the use of the tasers.

Not sure about Newark, but I'm fairly sure Detroit was '67 -- it's been mentioned as the event that really pushed Detroit off the cliff. You're right, though: About every 25 years or so we get another round of this nonsense. It's as if a new generation not only has to come along, but has to spend a few years after age 18 doing God knows what, to give us a new explosion.

252 I wasn't sure how you would strangle someone with pressure to the back of the neck-- the vertebrae are in the way, unless it was pressure against the ground.

One thing I couldn't clearly see from the video though, was where the cop's other leg was. Was it on the ground, or was it on his back? That could have prevented expanding the ribcage to draw breath.

I don't know from this case, but generally speaking if a fella is saying "stop, you're strangling me," you ain't strangling him.

What a load of horse shit in this.

"Sanctions" are indeed mentioned, but from the context, it is about the *expulsion of diplomats* and not economic, etc. Not "sanctions" as they're generally meant:

FLYNN: I know, I - believe me, I do appreciate it, I very much appreciate it. But I really don't want us to get into a situation where we're going, you know~ where we do this and then you do something bigger, and then you know, everybody's got to go back and forth and everybody's got
to be the tough guy here, you know?

Timestamp 7:00

FLYNN: We don't need to, we don't need that right now, we need to- we need cool heads to prevail, and uh, and we need to be very steady about what we're going to do because we have absolutely a common uh. threat in the Middle East right now

KISLYAK: We agree.

FLYNN: We have to eliminate this common threat.

KISLYAK: We agree. One of the problems among the measures that have been announced today is that now FSB and GRU are sanctions, are sanctioned, and I ask myself, uh~ does it mean that the United States isn't willing to work on terrorist threats?

FLYNN: Yeah, yeah.

KISLYAK: Because that's the people who are exactly, uh, fighting the terrorists.

FLYNN: Yeah, yeah, yep.

KISLYAK: So that's something that we have to deal with. But I've heard what you say, and I certainly will try·-

FLYNN: Yeah.

KISLYAK: - to get the people in Moscow to understand it.

FLYNN: Yeah.

Timestamp 08:00

FLYNN: And please make sure that its uh - the idea is, be - if you~ if you have to do something, do something on a reciprocal basis, meaning you know, on a sort of an even basis. Then that, then that is a good message and we'll understand that message. And, and then, we know that
we're not going to escalate this thing, where we~ where because if we put out- if we send out 30 guys and you send out 60, you know, or you shut down every Embassy, I mean we have to get this to a - let's, let's keep this at a level that uh is, is even-keeled, okay? ls even-keeled. And
then what we can do is, when we come in, we can then have a better conversation about where, where we're gonna go, uh~ regarding uh, regarding our relationship. And also, basically we have to take these, these enemies on that we have. And we definitely have a common enemy. You have a problem with it, we have a problem with it in this country, and we definitely have a problem with it in the Middle East.

It wasn't "sanctions" in the typical sense. The conversation was about Obama's expulsion of diplomats. There wasn't even a quid pro quo or anything - just a request to not escalate beyond equivalent retaliation.

345 @Joe Mannix, just read the transcripts. The key is that sanctions never came up on either side. Supposedly according to the edited 3002, the agents asked Flynn if he discussed sanctions, and he said he didn't recall it. The transcripts show that was 100 percent true.

Then, the SC's office refused to give up the transcripts, but maintained all along that he had discussed sanctions and lied to the FBI about it. I believe they said so in the Mueller Report too, but I could be wrong. Flynn and his lawyers believed what they represented to him and he admitted to lying to the FBI in his plea allocution, based on being told that he had indeed discussed sanctions.

Now we know from the transcripts that the SC was lying. It's not a crime to lie to a suspect, but failing to disclose the truth at trial is a Brady violation as a minimum and probably sanctionable by a rational judge.

I can't wait for the next round of Swalwell versus Grenell.

This site is focused around Ace's ruminations more than trying to build a base of profiles for advertisers to target, and as such, it's not "social media" in the modern sense to me.

372 It doesn't matter that the coroner found no evidence of "strangulation," the ultimate cause of Floyd's death was the situation and circumstances created by the officer.

Let's look at the following scenario, someone is attacking you, you flee from them into oncoming traffic and are struck and killed by a car.

The immediate cause of your death was a car hitting you, the ultimate cause of your death was the asshole that was attacking you.

Now this scenario does not track perfectly but there was no legitimate use of force scenario/policing reason for the cop to be sitting on top of Floyd, in the manner he was sitting on top of him, for the duration he sat on top of him until he went into distress, which he announced to the cop, repeatedly.

Dan Bongino has spoken upon this and I agree with his take, once the perp was on the ground in handcuffs the fight was over.

And it's not clear that Floyd was resisting arrest at all.

This does not appear to be a hard case.

391 The cable industry f'd itself. It was originally supposed to be a way for rural people to access network programming. It was explicitly supposed to be a menu choice of channels. What's the first thing cable did when they were green lighted to start selling packages? They bundled EVERYTHING together. There are 2 or 3 channels I would pay for. There are 800 I would not.

Posted by: torabora at May 29, 2020 06:06 PM (kqkWF)

402 372 It doesn't matter that the coroner found no evidence of "strangulation," the ultimate cause of Floyd's death was the situation and circumstances created by the officer.

Posted by: Thomas Bender at May 29, 2020 06:01 PM (dJSey)

------

If you listen to Chauvin, he was pissed off that Floyd didn't get in the car (IMO he was also using the knee position to punish him by grinding his neck into pavement).

If the dipshit had gotten off of him after a minute or two, Floyd would be alive, and half of Minneapolis wouldn't be burnt down.

I had used the amazoid fire stick for a log time, until it started freaking out. I got ROKU a few months ago. It seems pretty good, but being a cheap chinese piece of shite, it too freaks out every few weeks. I have to unistall the apps and then reinstall (looked it up on the forums). I wish they'd make one for a few dollars more that was stable. Definitely unplug when not in use if you can remember. But, for $25-35 it's a lot better than paying for a few dozen channels you'll never use with directv or dish.

The roku app is good, but so is vudu. I never bothered to sign up for hulu, because there's too much good free stuff out there. They'll say you need to give your CC#, but don't do it, just start viewing. You only need to give them that info if you plan to rent things. Amazoid is enough for me. Although I'm not happy they raised their rates just for covid - like they weren't already making bank with all the stores closed.

A couple of years ago, my folks were complaining about their bills and so I went over all of them with them.

Two landlines, various phone company charges, internet and satellite TV charges amounted to damn near $250 a month. They wanted to keep TV. I did the math and by dropping to *just* internet access from the phone company and shifting everything over to it - VoIP for the phones, streaming for the TV - would pay off the required hardware within three months and save them a fortune.

I bought Rokus for the TVs, a UPS (battery back-up) for the VoIP box, found the right services, got it set up, etc. And their savings are well into the thousands now.

461 I think you can stream TCM with a firestick. Shouldn't be too much for a subscription.

The fire stick and roku are nearly identical. The only difference being that the firestick runs amazoid native, and on roku you need to use the app. Native is a little bit better, but I found the roku is a lot more stable with apps in general, and doesn't try to hide some and partner with others the way amazoid does.

You can get just about any channel your hear desires, just install the app. Most all of them have a trial at worst. Turner Classic no doubt has an app, as would AMC and similar. I've had so much free stuff I've not bothered - and those were my go-to back when I had directv.

According to preliminary autopsy, there were no signs of strangulation, says Floyd had underlying medical conditions that contributed to his death.

Curiouser and curiouser.

Some one has probably already said this, but:

Of course there are no signs of strangulation. He wasn't strangulated. In strangulation, generally the hyoid bone is fractured. The cop had his knee on the guy's carotid artery, interrupting oxygen flow to his brain. I'm not a doctor, so make of that what you will.

463 I live one county out from Minneapolis.

I just have Broadcast TV and dsl internet.

I get about 60 broadcast digital TV channels, only about twenty might have something worth watching, and I watch only about six regularly. Two local channels for news, and two of their local subchannels for news and re-runs, and two old movie channels. The other 14 might have a show a month I watch, including NBC and CBS.

If Trump doesn't realize, and it's questionable that he does, that he is in a fight for his life, and the life of his children after he leaves office then he's not nearly as bright as I thought he was.

Most people don't know the difference between a choke and a strangle.

467 > A one in a million shot! This cop just happened to kneel for seven minutes on the neck of a guy with the exact health conditions that would kill him in this circumstance.

Once they find a tactic that works, they stick with it. If shouting "stop resisting" is the magic cop equivalent of "it was comin' right for us!", they will shout it whenever they want to kick someone's ass. If "underlying medical conditions" lets them crush someone to death, every case of "I can't breathe" will be met with "underlying medical conditions".

468 NBCUniversal was pushing all its chips on Peacock and the 2020 Olympics.

That's a real shame.

470 I can't see why conservatives should pay an industry that continually seeks their destruction. Too easy to pirate the few things I do watch, and I couldn't care less if it goes away, either.
