52 It was a fish this time, that summer when the motes of dust floated in the beam of light that formed an oblong of white on the dull dead wood floor and the gnats darned up and down in the still hot air. The fish, the dessicated husk of a being that could have gone from one end of the globe to the other underwater if only it had had the time to do so and the will and the ability to evade sharks, other fish, but mostly time, which would find it dead and then grasped between the teeth of two men, contestants, allies in hunger, enemies in their acquisitiveness, mutely struggling to obtain, capture, take, win the scaly dead dry prize of their nutritional ambitions...

68 James Ensor was Belgian. He seems to have reached the peak of his career around the WWI/interWar period. I cannot ID the red outfit, but the one on the right seems to have the same hat as the some of the German military elite, like General August Mackensen. Because of this, I'm going to say that the one in red may represent German politicians, or some group from the French/British side. The pickled herring may be Belgium? Death on both sides fighting over a meal? The way they are fighting is interesting too. They aren't using their hands. They grip the fish in their teeth and try to pull it away from the other, like wolves. I can almost hear the snarling.

117 It was a fish this time, that summer when the motes of dust floated in the beam of light that formed an oblong of white on the dull dead wood floor and the gnats darned up and down in the still hot air.

213 The painting represents the two critics: Édouard Fétis and Max Sulberger. Their negative responses to Ensor's artwork drove him to portray them in multiple satirical paintings. In this particular work Ensor represents himself as a pickled herring being torn apart by their hateful criticism. The word herring in French, hareng-saur-close, if said with the proper pronunciation, apparently sounded like "art Ensor" or "Ensor's art."

306 Willowed like a herring:

Eh, look, Rush is staring the Grim Reaper in the face and like all people he wants his time on Earth to mean something.

"You get no do-overs." as he likes to say.

Rush strikes me as a guy who knows himself very well. He knows his strengths. He knows his weaknesses.

One of his strengths is that he is a master persuader.

And I believe, one of his core beliefs is that, as a Conservative that the Law and the US Constitution are for all men and women. That following its guidelines will lead to a a happy and prosperous nation filled with happy prosperous people regardless of race or religion, etc.

However, you've got to jump into the pool and swim. If you stand outside US society and its opportunities, either through contempt or fear or, if you're held outside by alligence to the Democrat Party,

you have no way to benefit.

That doesn't mean you'll have an easy life. It just means the opportunities are there for everyone.

That positive message is what Rush was trying to convey to the Breakfast Club's audience.

That the US is for you. The Constitution was built ultimately for everyone.

And that every life has hard knocks but it's not necessarily a conspiracy against you cuz you're Black or Black people in general.

It was noble effort.

And anyone of TBC's listeners who had an open mind might be persuaded.

This wasn't meant to be a knock down, drag out, ideological fight.

If so, Rush would've gone straight after "the Magic Words" which CtG kept evoking and never defining..

ie.

What exactly is "White Privilege" defined concretely? What is "White Supremacy" defined concretely?
How does it affect you directly?
Where are the houses, the colleges, the jobs, the government positions which no Black person can access?
Etc.

These words are "Magic Signifiers" meant to be purposefully vague so that like "blank slate" Oblabla, they can mean anything to anyone,

and therefore can be used as a weapon to shutdown discussion as CtG did time after time.

As a sidenote: the Yi Girl seemed like the smartest and most open to discussion, if not to persuasion.

I liked Rush's effort.

It was positive.

359 The painting represents the two critics: douard Ftis and Max Sulberger.
Posted by: Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler at June 02, 2020 10:01 AM (+y/Ru)

Obviously this has been discussed a million times over, and I'm not going to dwell on it, but art criticism has been detrimental to human artists for eons. Probably forever.

The elitist attitude has presumably never not been present, and those who see it as a legitimate way to gatekeep art, will always defend their right to put some artists on the outside and leave them there.

Ensor seems to have been particularly damaged (emotionally and presumably financially) by criticism.

Now, people don't have to like his stuff, but frankly I'd rather hang an Ensor painting in my home than the endless bland and boring fruit bowls, portraits, and landscrapes that are considered masterpieces by all the right people.

They dispersed the crowd because they were being pelted with water bottles and vandals were going after a structure they vandalized/burned the night before.

So much for the media narrative because you know they will ask why Trump had innocent protestors shot and killed last night for a photo op and the new press secretary will rip them a new one.

427 423 This really is an amazing bit of work. A gentleman took film that was made during the Battle of the Somme. He went to France and found the places in the films and then did his own video. Then, as much as possible, he synced up the two videos. Like looking through a window in time. Seeing ghosts.

506 500 Nice!

I think, so far, anyway, that's the best time of Life.

You've got a youngish, sexy wife, you've got young kiddos who still regard you as a benevolent god,

you're climbing the ladder of success in your job shaving ferrets or whatever the hell is that you do for a living.

Man, it is all good at that age.

Enjoy!

513 A description of how Chicago PD messed up their riot response from SCC Blog:

Saturday. Officers downtown are overwhelmed. Daytime officers released from their posts so as not to incur any overtime. Finally officers downtown call for backup after many 10-1s. Deputy Chief of nearest area refuses to send officers downtown. All hell breaks loose. Decision to send additional officers-resources, raise bridges and use tear gas come too late as many businesses, police cars and property in the downtown area have been destroyed by the looters.
At 1130 pm department decides to cancel days off and change start times to allow for a large group of officers to assemble at White Sox Park for deployment.
Sunday. Due to how late the decision came out many officers had no idea that start times were changed causing more confusion. Some of the group were sent to HQ to protect it. Most sat in Sox Park Parking Lot never leaving despite massive rioting-looting in the neighborhoods. Looters were treated to a shopping spree with little to no police resistance. Nearby suburbs were also hit.
Monday. Finally deploying officers from Sox Park. Still outmanned. Officers playing whack a mole with each new looting location.
If this doesnnot go down as the worst response to a riot in the history of free world I will be amazed. There is no leadership anywhere in this city. Brownie makes Jody Wies look like Patton. Downtown looks like something out of a bad Bruckheimer movie. Lightfoot spent all her energy chasing worshippers out of churches and has no energy (or desire) to do anything about the looters. Welcome to the third world.

What would you like your pastor to do and have you told him? How can you help him with that?

And what's wrong with prayer? I gather you'd like him to do something stronger, but you realize, I'm sure, that your pastor has a bunch of voices in the church he has to listen to and they may say conflicting things. Conflict in the church is nothing new.

536 416 All of this media conditioning has gotten almost every black person in the country to believe in "White Privilege" and "Institutional Racism". Once either of those two terms is mentioned, all rational thought goes out the window and no reasoned discussion is possible, because the people who believe in them demand that you bow down on your knees and worship those ideas before they will even talk to you.
Posted by: Tom Servo at June 02, 2020 10:36 AM (Kpl3J)

I'd wish that Rush asked about 'Black Privilege'-after the initial gasps about why it doesn't exist explain that is what every single rational person thinks when they hear about 'White Privilege'.

It might be instructive to have you pastor look at writings by pastors in the Soviet Union or other Eastern Bloc Countries during th e 50's until the Fall of the Berlin wall I don't know what to direct you to. I know that the RCC was one of the key elements in the solidarity movement in Poland.

I don't think prayer is ever feckless. "Greater is he that is within you than he that is in the world, nor is calling on the Holy Spirit, but it needs t be done in public.

It depends on what is being prayed for.

I would insist on praying for the defeat of the army of savages pillaging its way across America, but I don't think that's what he has in mind.

Posted by: Methos at June 02, 2020 11:48 AM (kOpft)

544 Well, you don't need your pastor to be the official prayer-er. If you have men in the church who are willing to get together in your house form a prayer group. Call it the " prayer warriors" perhaps and inform your pastor this is what you're going to do. Invite him. I don't think he'd object unless you're planning to get the Deacons or Admin Board to remove him from office.
