Norway's Health Minister Announces That Lockdowns Were Not Needed to Tamp Down on Coronavirus

Twitter rates this claim as untrue and orders you to spend 24 hours watching Fredo Cuomo interviewing Hotnips Cuomo for reeducation.

Norway is assembling a picture of what happened before lockdown and its latest discovery is pretty significant. It is using observed data -- hospital figures, infection numbers and so on -- to construct a picture of what was happening in March. At the time, no one really knew. It was feared that virus was rampant with each person infecting two or three others--– and only lockdown could get this exponential growth rate (the so-called R number) down to a safe level of 1. This was the hypothesis advanced in various graphs by Imperial College London for Britain, Norway and several European countries.

But the Norwegian public health authority has published a report with a striking conclusion: the virus was never spreading as fast as had been feared and was already on the way out when lockdown was ordered. 'It looks as if the effective reproduction rate had already dropped to around 1.1 when the most comprehensive measures were implemented on 12 March, and that there would not be much to push it down below 1… We have seen in retrospect that the infection was on its way down.'

...

This raises an awkward question: was lockdown necessary? What did it achieve that could not have been achieved by voluntary social distancing? Camilla Stoltenberg, director of Norway's public health agency, has given an interview where she is candid about the implications of this discovery. 'Our assessment now, and I find that there is a broad consensus in relation to the reopening, was that one could probably achieve the same effect -- and avoid part of the unfortunate repercussions -- by not closing. But, instead, staying open with precautions to stop the spread.'

More bad news for Team Apocalypse -- 43% of covid deaths came from just 0.62% of the US population, the nursing homes.

Which means we didn't need to lock the country down; we just needed to keep the infected out of nursing homes.

2.1 million Americans, representing 0.62% of the U.S. population, reside in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. (Nursing homes are residences for seniors needing help with activities of daily living, such as taking a shower or getting dressed, who also require 24/7 medical supervision; assisted living facilities are designed for seniors who need help with activities of daily living, but don’t require full-time on-site medical supervision.)

According to an analysis that Gregg Girvan and I conducted for the Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity, as of May 22, in the 39 states that currently report such figures, an astounding 43% of all COVID-19 deaths have taken place in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.

Andrew Cuomo is essentially responsible for almost the entire covid pandemic in the United States.

The latest CDC report admits as much:

The Ruling Junta of the United States wants to remain closed down for as long as possible because they're trying to delay the public realizing they were wrong all along -- which they will realize, when infection rates do not skyrocket as "The Experts" keep telling us that God told them they would.

Oh, and also, they really want to take away Trump's top election selling point.

"It worked, didn't it?" said one of their heroes, Harry Reid, about peddling the fiction that Mitt Romeny had not paid federal income taxes in ten years.

Meaning: Yes I lied. But the lie I told succeeded in the effect I intended -- Mitt Romney lost the election.

When their visions of apocalypse and premonitions of doom fail to manifest, but the US is stagnating in high unemployment, they will also say with a wink, "It worked, didn't it?"

8 Note, another study here in the US shows that due to increases in suicides, Cancer, and despair,

The lockdown is costing us COSERVATIVLY an EXTRA 100 K deaths PER MONTH.

So, we have killed twice as many with the lockdown as the Vid have killed in the US.

Its almost like that silly old Constitution was correct all along.

Yeah, if the disease "escaped" China in November, it was spreading for four months before lockdowns started.

I wasn't entirely against them in the very beginning, assuming they would last two weeks, but the idea that they're continuing is ridiculous.

I hope the American people punish those doing it through the ballot box.

Certainly someone got too close to someone at a lake last weekend and started a speeding train of mega infections resulting in the final blow to this 97 year old and as a result, we must continue to be locked down, restaurants cannot open, nor barbers or hair salons.

I'm waiting for her to send a platoon of state police to arrest the 77 year old barber and take him to jail. Unless they throw him on the ground first and choke him out.

58 And those who disparage the twatters without knowing what's there are probably hearing most of this for the first time.

It is common sense and actual expert doctrine that radical mitigation measures are ineffective after prevalence exceeds 1% - seems like a low threshold, but with a modern society and highly infectious bug, makes sense. The general quarantine we've seen, with variations, here and elsewhere is actually something not considered effective, or cost-effective, by most settle epidemic-control guidance.

So as with so many topics, it's important to distinguish between two phases of this situation - one where there was limited information, but substantial suggestion that a mega-killer bug was on the lose, and the second phase, when it became clear that this wasn't the case.

A separate question however is why ineffective or ruinously costly measures - by existing public health standards - were implemented, but especially *why they were extended and continue even today, long past the time the earlier panic was resolved*.

If the federal government can't act against mass murderers with a five digit death count, whag is the earthly point of having one? Trump has the reason, motive, and power to send the military to New York to terminate Cuomo's regime.

And I certainly hope he does.

Now, the only question left is, is this THE pandemic, or was this just a dry run to see how their models worked?

99 On April 3, I looked into my crystal ball and said to myself:

-- They're going to lock down the country. Possibly the world.
-- There will be a big panic.
-- But it won't last forever -- epidemics always fade away sooner or later.
-- This one will fade away sooner.
-- The panic will end eventually. I predict: by mid-June, the whole upcoming hysteria will be over.
-- However, now, in early April everyone is just starting to panic. And the best thing to do when a big herd starts stampeding one way is to go the exact opposite way.
-- So now, on April 3, I'm going to book an overseas trip at insanely rock-bottom prices, because all the airlines and Airbnb places have just dropped their prices by 80+% in desperation to attract customers.
-- I got an Airbnb that normally goes for $500/night for the incredible price of $70/night.
-- I got a flight that normally goes for $1200 for $380.
-- Two months later, my prediction proved almost perfectly accurate, and now that everyone's thinking about traveling again, I already have the whole trip set up, for a mere pennies on the dollar!

Smooth.

100 The T-cell cross immunity findings tell us that rather than 100% susceptibility in the general population, in reality a much smaller portion of the population was susceptible. All of the "we bent the curve downward" claims are merely magical thinking. Unfortunately, that mindset persists on the back end of a dwindling epidemic.

108 The 43% figure is unequivocally low, but no one knows how much. First, some places list the residence as the hospital for a death, so that person may have been in a nursing home also. Second, prior to May 1, 11 states (including Lovely Gretchen's Michigan) didn't count nursing home deaths, and some of them still haven't done anything to correct the pre-May numbers.

So yes, the slaughter of the elderly is even worse than the Cuomos and WitchLady's of the world are telling us.

109 There's a curve that describes the path of just about every epidemic ever documented (to my surprise and continuing bafflement, even enteric-diseases - water-borne). Asymmetric bell-shaped curve, long right shoulder.

Yep - that's the path described by this epidemic, perfectly, for both cases (such as they are know, a whole other problem) and deaths.

THAT has been clear for a while.

The fatality being similar to flu, except far *lower* for the bulk of the population, has been clear for a while.

These are the facts that make WH policy, from April 30, with the "phases" (which also make no sense, given the situation), impossible to understand.

Why call DeSantis and jawbone him to limit "re-opening" measures - for a bug that is *not* a big killer among the general population, and which is way, way, way past containment, and which has zero potential to overwhelm medical capacity? Maybe some day even a tiny bit of detail will emerge, and we'll see how Trump did not seek a Team B perspective or at least have somebody on his team arguing common sense, even by May.

120 the Weird thing is that it seems when the left NEEDED the virus to spread, they mocked Trump as racist and dumb for stopping some flights ... it was business as usual mostly, as it spread. Illinois and I think many places, went on serious lock down AFTER we were at peak... at that point they were screaming that we had to shut down for months ... till there is a CURE.

I read about the "natural immunity" thing probably a month ago, whcih is now confirmed more or less ... that some had partial immunity from earlier corona viruses ... or from general healthy lifestyle out playing in the dirt. Healthy people recover without treatment, if they ever even get infected from their exposure.

It seems more and more like an Op by the enemy. But two things accomplished imo ....

1. A coming market correction threat was gotten rid of, and can be blamed squarely on China and their virus. (even if markets go lower again from here)

2. China is now clearly seen as a dishonest and evil threat to the free world. Even Wall Street may see their fate as precarious if they continue to cross the Nile (to wealth) on the back of the China crocodile. The media and political players on the take from China may be exposed as well.

The trillions thrown at the problem ... that's gonna leave a mark. MMT or jubilee ... We'll cross that Rubicon after the election maybe ...

1) The number of infected people increased proportionally to the number of people tested, and

154 It's not that mitigation is pointless, it is that there are certain conditions that leads to the spread, and that data was ignored because everyone was on a power trip and obsessed with Ro (a term they misused from the start.)

Japan learned very very early on that most of their spread was coming from nightclubs. So they shut down nightclubs. (also schools for other reasons, and in Japan people are very reserved and wear masks so mass transit was not a big problem for them.)

There was data from early contact tracing, and you could see that 30 people would get infected at a nightclub (crowded, dancing, singing ...) and then they would go and infect a few family and coworkers but after that it would mostly die until one of them went to another crowded environment.

In Korea, it was the crowded church. It was never parks or hair salons. In US it was meat packing facilities (maybe the cold? not sure why.)

This data was there but instead of looking at that, they looked at models. I ignored models from the start since I have modeling experience (from industry not biology) and models are a tool for telling you how to make a model based on data you collect after you run experiments. They do not predict anything. They confirm that assumptions used to make the model.

It was evident a while ago that - consistent with existing "science" and common sense on epidemics - mitigation is impractical past very early stages, or in very special circumstances. My parish has added two additional Masses (for a total of 5) on Sunday and the numbers are limited to 90 for the 7:30 for at-risk parishoners and 120 for the others. There's an online registration for the Mass you want to attend. Between Masses, the K of C and Altar Guild do a quick cleaning of the sanctuary.

Those are measures that could have been done any time during this. Any time. Our pastor is constrained by what the Archbishop said and His Eminence shut down public Masses during April.

What he should have done was told the civil authorities to take a jump. Yes, Sunday obligation should have been suspended during this, but there should be public Masses in every parish for any of the faithful who wanted to attend. I've heard real cries of pain from those deprived of the Sacraments during this stupid episode.

193 The thing about the European countries that is significant is that their populations are still somewhat united in being what they are - Norway is Norwegian, etc.

In the US, the waves of unassimilated immigration since 1965 has diluted the ability to have a self preservation consciousness or awareness in the population. We are deliberately isolated into little "enclaves" of wokeness or basedness based on gender, race, ethnicity, religion or religious substitute, etc.

And our elected officials cater to the loudest voices and/or the highest bidders who are almost all leftists or worse.

An All-American president like Donald Trump would have been unremarkable in 1950. Or even 1960. But today being All-American is somehow bad? A house divided against itself cannot stand - things said by some dead white guy.

229 > Is it really that the entire Earth was plummeted into attempted economic ruin based on one guy's model that no one even checked the math on before everything was done?

The entire earth was plunged into economic ruin as an attempt to install global totalitarianism, complete with omnipresent surveillance and propaganda, and population control. The model was just a way to justify it. No different from global warming.

I noticed the other day that "technocracy" and "coccitherian" are near-anagrams. I wonder what it means.

Posted by: Grump928(c) at May 28, 2020 03:18 PM (giapq)

341 Here's an old idea that may be ripe for this point in time...

We've got a lot of unused cruise ships registered in third world shithole countries.

We've got a lot of terminally ill seniors who live in pain and poverty, suffering indignities daily and basically abandoned in society.

What would happen if the government subsidized a program where the seniors could opt to take an all-expenses paid two week cruise. With wonderful care givers, all the drugs, booze and food they could imagine, and a bonus $50,000 to each cruise passenger.

The only thing is that nobody comes back to port.

For two weeks, seniors who had little or nothing their entire lives are treated like kings and queens, are pain-free and also have plenty of money to leave to whoever they like.

Society saves money overall in reduced intensive or long term care.

People die with dignity in a pleasant surrounding.

Just a thought...

The policy is a violation of Title IX, the federal civil rights law that guarantees equal education opportunities for women, including in athletics, the office said.

Posted by: Tom Servo at May 28, 2020 03:11 PM (Kpl3J)
+++++++++++
It's important to put that perspective. It's even worse than it looks. Assuming 40 million out of work (I have seen everything from 20 to 40), it is a nightmare scenario.

The 2019 average labor force size was 163.5 million. Average participation was 63.1%. So the active/participating labor force was 103.2 million.

So that means this response - this unnecessary, misguided, and increasingly evil response - knocked out from 19.4% to 38.8% of the entire labor force.

Those middle-class wage gains we finally started to see? Yeah, you can kiss them goodbye. With that much labor force on the hunt for work (some large proportion will not be called back from furloughs or layoffs), wage compression is going to back in vogue. Once unemployment hits 5% again, we can see wages rise again but that party is probably over for several years.

450 Food for thought:

The Bay of Pigs was JFK using only expert opinions.

The Cuban Missile Crisis was JFK using a team of rivals approach where he assigned groups to straw man and steel man each other's arguments.

Good decision making avoids expert opinions because they are all the same and there is no incentive to be a contrarian. It's discouraged, which helps to guard the experts and keep them valuable.

Even the UK is saying restaurants and bars can reopen.

Posted by: notsothoreau at May 28, 2020 03:26 PM (JKNZq)

Saw a headline on MSNBC while they were talking to Fauci. Couldn't hear what they said. The headline, though, said something about masks being a symbol of what we should do. I take that to mean the masks do nothing but allow people to show their virtue.

455 Well, originally, the intention of lockdowns was to flatten the curve/not overwhelm hospitals. That *did* happen - but it might have happened anyway. The problem is the goalposts immediately shifted to "we need a vaccine/cure," which was NEVER the stated intention of Stay at Home orders.

I've stashed a good bit of cash and I encourage others to do the same.

It's undeniable that within a few months, a lot of people are going to stop paying their bills, due to not having a job and not receiving an extra $600 per week in unemployment. At that point, credit card companies and mortgage lenders will shut off the taps.

Only those who exercised their options prior to the credit shutoff will have enough cash to get by and prosper. Others will be left to sell off assets at greatly reduced value just to pay for necessities.

458 Dr. Philip Petersen, a career infectious disease specialist, was interviewed in mid-March. He said if this SARS follows the template of the first SARS it will burn out in 7-8 months from patient 0. That would be June or July.
Posted by: kallisto

Burn out can mean a couple of things. "Herd immunity", that often bandied about cliche about enough of us becoming immune or developing antiobodies/T-cells to fight the virus.

The virus continues to mutate, and the less lethal version becomes prevalent. Because...think about it. The more lethal the virus, the less likely that an infected person passes it on. Dead people and people confined to a virus ward are not likely to pass on the virus to the general population.

Imagine if there had been a Sweden approach, and we would still have had 100,000 dead.

Politically, could President Trump survive that? I'm not so sure. The Deep State within his administration - CDC and NIH - would have destroyed him.

This shows us that every single holdover from previous administrations needs to be shown the door on Inauguration Day. Barky's administration kept plotting against DJT right up to the moment of the inauguration.

497 If they just said "wear masks, wash your hands and try stay 6 feet apart" along with other measures in places like NYC such as more trains and buses so they don't get packed in (maybe find a way to block seats and areas to limit the number of passengers) and not sending grandma a virus stricken roommate for mother's day, we'd probably have half the deaths, half the unemployment and be out of this already.

But they went to the extreme, they didn't ask nicely or suggest, it was immediate demonizing and that lead to people telling them to fuck off and not take precautions.

Then again all those measures wouldn't have fit the goals of all the "experts" who seem to want more deaths so their connected medical companies get huge contacts and stock bounces.

I really of the Trump DoJ looks into every "expert" to see if they had a reason to push the hysteria, because three odds of that not being the case are low.
