The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

So this is what the CEI (Competitive Enterprise Institute) has to say about President Trump's new executive order on social media:

President Trump's new executive order on social media speech, if implemented, would require a significant government apparatus to oversee it, as would the legislative proposals we have seen from Republicans like Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO). If the right's concern is the left's presumed dominance of online discourse and the blocking of viewpoints, the proposed Executive Order would worsen the problem by delivering the Internet into the hands of the administrative state...If the Trump White House goes forward with this executive order, some conservatives will have helped erect an Anti-First and Fifth Amendment machinery to police online speech that they are highly unlikely to control as time goes on.

Of course, this misses the point completely. Whoever wrote it has no understanding of the way Trump operates.

It's like tariffs. Many doctrinaire libertarions got upset when Trump proposed new tariffs and increased tariffs on Chinese imports. But it's not clear that he thinks that tariffs are a positive good in and of themselves. He had another end in mind: more advantage trade deals with China, ones that benefitted America more. The threat of tariffs was simply a club that he used to bring China to the negotiating table.

I think this same narrative is in play here. Trump is not interested in adding another layer of government bureacracy to enforce social media regulations. I think his EO is just a shot across the bow to warn social media to clean up its act. The tech giants now know that Trump means what he says and that there are off-the-radar negotiations going on. I don't know this, I am merely speculating, but this is how Trump always seems to work: make a lot of noise in public and get stuff done in practice.

I don't think it is a coincidence that he started taking shots at the pathetic dweeb Joe Scarborough a few days ago. It's part of his distraction strategy. As I've said many times, Democrats and journalists (BIRM) are like a roomful of cats and Trump is the one standing at the door waving a laser pointer. "Just you wait!" I can almost hear them say, "we'll get that red dot this time and that will be the beginning of the end for -- oh, look, there it is, over there on that wall -- get it! Oof! Curse you, Trump!"

He does this *all* the time. And they *always* take the bait. It's like they can't help themselves.

And on a related note, Twitter's fact-checking of Trump's tweet about mail-in ballots turned out to be wrong. Oops.

Wednesday's celebs: Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan who co-starred with Martin Henderson in the Bollywood remake, retitled Bride and Prejudice. Not sure what Jame Austen would think of her satirical take on Regency social life brought to the screen with show-stopping dance numbers added to it. I like to think she would be wryly amused.

+++++++++++++++
Yes. The CEI is wrong on this one. Read the order. It only does one new thing and that is to prohibit federal executive agencies from buying advertising on the platforms. The other two items are existing federal agencies - under *existing* law - to look into the social media systems to determine if there is any potential conflict with platform status (FCC) or deceptive trade practices (FTC). This is nothing new and didn't even require an EO. I think he did this via EO to make a lot of noise and spark a much wider and more public argument over it.

And it won't require new enforcement because there is nothing new. If they lose their platform status, for example, it opens them to liability. But that is a civil matter. If there's found to be anything with deceptive practices, that is not civil but it also isn't new.

Other than the advertising block, the EO is entirely bluster - an extremely loud way of using existing mechanisms, likely for the purpose of dominating some news cycles and thrusting the issue of social media fairness into the fore.

I'm not talking about your garden variety nevertrump on twatter, I mean the folks who have no idea how to deal with the real world. So when Trump says or does something that goes against their worldview, it's like he took away their Spaghettios before they finished counting them and sorting them by shape and texture.

I guess some of them eventually calm down and look at the world more practically, but they sure do make a noise and a mess before they do.

93 Those Blizzards look mighty good. But you know what? I was right by a DQ yesterday, and wondered if it had reopened. I drove past slowly, and saw that the outdoor patio was completely festooned and entwined with yellow tape, to keep anyone from taking down a chair and sitting on it. And the big plate glass windows were PAPERED with notices about the WuFlu, with big red STOP signs prominently displayed. One could buy a frozen treat and promptly GET OUT, but nothing more. And I thought, "That doesn't sound very enjoyable! That's not what I want to pay money to experience." And I didn't go in.

I think a lot of people are going to be hanging on to any disposable income because they're worried about what fresh hell is coming down the road. And also, they're starting to think that what money they DO have isn't going to be spent on something that comes with a lot of downsides.

The end result is the same except that progressives get to keep their rights under the current paradigm.

It amazes me, too, how people still react to a single step in his negotiation dances as if that's his only play/that it's his only goal.

The interesting timing is that Twitter has just put a former Google AI exec, who happens to be associated with the Chinese military, in a position to crush free speech on twitter -- and it's already happening with the suspension of pro-Hong Kong and anti-Xi accounts.

Censoring the POTUS (especially during an election year) *is* a big deal, but people are foolish if they really think this is only about Trump being pissed off about his own twitter content being messed with.

Or it might just crush the current dominant social media companies who have become global powerhouses who feel comfortable suppressing speech in order to ensure their chosen world leaders are elected? What makes him think that isn't the goal?

The "cancel culture" that originated with these online powerhouses is already infecting other businesses, such as banking. The Lefty mobs that target people for cancellation on facebook, youtube and twitter aren't satisfied anymore, they then follow their targets to Gab, bitchute, patreon, and demand they be cancelled there, they attack their customers/sponsors, and they try to get the banks/patforms that facilitate any business transactions by their target to dump them, too.

There is no sitting back and allowing this to grow. It's way past time Trump and Congress took action, any action, that stops this activity and allows alternate platforms such as Gab to flourish and compete (not be de-platformed by the deplatforming mob).

Every law has unintended consequences because people change their behavior in all sorts of ways in response to it. What makes this CEI analyst think they have any idea how this EO and subsequent regulation by Congress will play out?

I had hoped with a smart military blog, we could get some good answers, but this one is tough.

As discussed above, the front of that first rifle looks very much like an early model M16/AR, but the collapsible stock and large charging handle is all wrong for that.

The shotgun looks nice and its a good photo, but Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s are both very common, and can look very similar. The safety is the easiest way to tell them apart, but of course, you can't see that.

Last picture doesn't give enough detail, at least for me, to ID the over/under shotgun or the random scoped rifle.

326 I agree, OM, this is Trump's opening shot.

I think it goes even deeper than that. The ridiculously high valuations of social media companies are based on a clicks-and-eyeballs model that was speculated in the runup to the dot-bomb crash but never panned out.

Collecting and selling user tracking data was tacked onto the model starting a long while back, but none of it has actually materialized.

Look at the cities that suffered riots back then, even now, and there are downtown areas that look nice and shiny, but plenty of neighborhoods are still waiting. He told how his family's house was the only one on the block not torched, because there was a white family on the first floor, his family (black did I mention?) on the 2nd.

Said if he met me in a race riot situation, all he would see would be my whiteness. Which is why, I told him, I would give any such scene a wide berth - preferably in the hundreds of miles.

The premise is odd, there is something that comes back from the moon and starts wreaking havoc. Koenig is the hero and they decide that the threat came from the moon and he has a decent line after someone asks him what they should do: 'We have got to go back to the Moon.' So, they scrap together a lot of display parts of a saturn v with a lander and shoot that son of a bitch to the moon to fight the alien(?) threat.

I am leaving out a lot and forgetting more. It has been around 30 years since I saw it.

I think once the % of bad ones hits a critical mass, good ones realize they have as much to fear from their "brothers" as non-uniformed criminals, and head for greener pastures. The few that remain have even less support and get drummed out for making waves, or worse. Doesn't mean the rest are actively evil, but they won't do anything to stop it (they might not put their knee on the neck, but they'll watch it happen, so to speak). Unionization exacerbates it, since it always works to the benefit of the worst.

But, yeah it's a 3 scene movie:

1) The 'Splodey Head Scene

473 >>Who in their right mind willl ge their history from the New york slimes?

That project is like "An Inconvenient Truth". It's designed not as a one-time splash of articles, but packaged as an education package and then added to public school curricula. Think it was even done as a joint project with the Pulitzer organization (gee, and then they awarded the authors, cute!).

So, who will get their history from the NYT? Public school kids all across the country for years to come.

Are you going to tell me that the MPD's culture is NOT clearly completely screwed up? Because it doesn't matter that not all the 800+ officers are bad if enough of the ones that matter are.

Posted by: Brother Tim at May 29, 2020 12:04 PM

And this is how one goes about smearing an entire group of people based on the actions of a few.

Because it doesn't matter that not all the 800+ Christians are bad, if enough of the ones that matter are.

Because it doesn't matter that not all the 800+ Muslims are bad, if enough of the ones that matter are.

Because it doesn't matter that not all the 800+ US Marines are bad, if enough of the ones that matter are.

Because it doesn't matter that not all the 800+ Trump supporters are bad, if enough of the ones that matter are.

We need to stop broad brushing entire groups of people based on the actions of a few. That is the Democrat playbook. Let's not start using it ourselves, please.

480 I have come to conclude anarchism is roughly the same as marxism, in that it all sounds good. Until people get involved.
Posted by: BurtTC at May 29, 2020 12:07 PM (hku12)

Much like everybody thinks they're gonna get to be Stalin with Marxism rolls in, everybody thinks they're gonna be The Man With No Name when anarchy rolls in.

And they just plain aren't.
Posted by: Allie at May 29, 2020 12:12 PM (vmRc0)

One of the basic premises of anarchism is the question, how could it be any worse than what we have now?

It's hard to argue that point.

But yeah, the problem with any effort to implement an anarchic system is that as soon as you start implementing, somebody's going to be in charge, and there's your government. By another form, but still, a government, with elites and power structures and enforcement.

It's just mirror image marxism. Nice and pretty in theory, totally impossible if you're going to have humans involved.

482 Many jurisdictions allow a defense of "justification" if you shoot someone in the act of committing arson, on the theory that fire is an imminent danger to life.
I doubt MN extends this to shooting a looter/pure defense of property.

I think the reason the Rooftop Koreans were able to provide a credible deterrent because they got the indirect benefit of the phenomenon VD Hanson writes about, in which law is not enforced against "oppressed minorities" whereas a white, middle class home will get a summons if their recycling is off.

Its about a Failure of Government. They let a bad cop stay on the job. Then, when he pretty blatantly just killed someone they did not arrest him.

Yet the media is all in about RAAAAACISM. Not much if anything about the failure of government.

I am to the point that I hope all police officers call in sick. Everywhere.

Let the public try to get home safe when their cities are burning.

That would create an enormous increase in community togetherness in
the "You Loot We Shoot" sort of way (in communities that allow open
carry).

Communities banding together to watch out for each other (except for where Karen lives... she is on her own)

I'm okay with that. Why should a percentage of good law enforcement risk their lives for people that detest them, let everyone fend for themselves from now on.
No, the NG won't fill the void, you will, you will protect your children, your business, your life's work.

Why should anyone volunteer to be part of law enforcement. There's enough able bodied lawyers, cashiers, bus drivers, child care workers, chefs, etc to do that job so much better.

504 I am so happy I voted for Dornal Blumpf, self-proclaimed King of the Jews. Nothing says conservative like tweeting about controlling social media and then having you tweet taken down in less than 24 hours. Or canceling sections of the border wall which was really just a fence. Or letting jogger convicted felons out of prison early at the behest of the Kushners. Can't wait for the coming based tweets right up until the election and then more disappointment for four more years. Amnesty is back on the menu boys.

508 It definitely appears the cop used excessive force with his knee on the neck for so long. But a knee on the side of the neck can make it hard to breath but not stop breathing. If Floyd was under the influence the autopsy might show the cause of death was actually his heart giving out and not suffocation. The cop would still be guilty of excessive force, but not murder or even manslaughter.
