The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg

I can't find it now, but somebody posted a photo of a public swimming pool in a red state (Missouri, I think) and it looked like a normal Saturday afternoon at the pool, lots of people, only these aren't normal times. No, the time of men is over. The Age of Karen has arrived.

Anyway, the blue-staters were sputtering and fuming in the comments and it was a bunch of how-dare-they and curses hurled at Trump voters and one guy lost his mind completely and proclaimed that everyone in the pool would be dead in a couple of weeks. Dead! Like we're in medieval Europe and the Black Death has just rolled into town.

Get a grip.

Meanwhile, the CDC has issued guidelines for schools reopening and it has been observed that if you follow the guidelines rigorously, many schools, particularly private schools, could never reopen. Of course, if you're a progressive, this is a feature, not a bug, but the unworkableness of the guidelines simply means they'll be ignored. They were probably written by a bunch of lawyers using the most well-developed cover-our-asses language they could think of to ward off any possible lawsuits that they think will occur when some parent comes to them and says "hey, I sent my kid back to school and he got sick, so what are you going to do about it?"

The point is, the "guidelines" really aren't enforceable. It's not like the CDC is going to be sending out armed squads to every school district to insure compliance.

In my county in Oregon, we've had 67 cases total, including 2 deaths, out of a total population of 382,000 One of the deaths was a 60-year-old woman who died of a heart attack and after death they tested her for covid-19 and it was positive. We're doing one of these "phased reopening" things, with 3 stages. We just we into Phase 1 last week, but as far as I'm concerned, we can full reopen right now and I think we'd be fine.

I have to wonder if it is in the back of the blue-state governors minds that if they reopen, the first thing they'll get is massive Trump rallies. Which, of course, they'll they want to avoid, so they'll drag their feet as long as possible. They're also fearful of a recovering economy because that will also help Trump.

They also think that parading Pokey Joe around in a black mask and sunglasses makes him look like a Road Warrior badass. If I were Trump, I might be tempted to have my media guys photoshop a colander on my face for some publicity photos. Trump as the Lord Humungus would be an awesome meme.

Monday's celebs: French actress/model Germaine Lefebvre, known by the name Capucine and Fabiano Anthony Forte, better known to his fans as Fabian. I would have accepted as a connection that they were known by single names, but happily, they were in the same movie together, North to Alaska. Capucine suffered from mental health issues most of her adult life and she committed suicide in 1990.

AoSHQ Weekly Prayer List

Please submit any prayer requests to “Annie’s Stew” at apaslo atsign hotmail dot com.

Prayer Requests:

4/24 - Please pray for comfort for “B” and the rest of his family as they grieve the loss of his younger brother. His brother was a serviceman, a beloved father, and passed away due to liver failure (no root cause, just bad luck).

4/29 - SH asks for prayers that the boys would graduate without problems this May and that things would turn out as they hope.

5/5 - H requests prayers for his daughter, who is struggling with a relapse in her eating disorder. The shutdown has greatly complicated the situation.

5/20 - Jane D’oh requests prayers for a friend whose wife passed away last Saturday evening, as they were home, watching television. It was a complete surprise, and the family is devastated.

For Healing:

Caiwyn-who sometimes posts, asks for prayers for their dad who has pancreatic cancer. “Radiation and surgery brought time, but the cancer has still spread.” Prayers for healing.
Brother Cavil had been in the hospital and seems to be dealing with bacterial infection. Prayers for healing.

5/16- The Village Idiot’s Apprentice asks for prayers for Anna, from Ohio, as well as the other residents and staff of her Assisted Living home. She is 99 years old, and just tested positive for Covid-19, as well as many of the staff and residents of the facility. Patient #1 has already passed.
5/23 Update: Anna has taken a turn for the worse. He asks for prayers for her recovery, but if God has chosen to call her home, may her passage be peaceful and pain free.

5/16 - The Village Idiot’s Apprentice also asks for prayers for his Uncle Bill, who was hospitalized in Pennsylvania with possible a-fib.
5/23 Update: Bill is stable and at home now.

5/19 - M needs prayers for his grandniece, Chloe, who was born with bad kidneys. She’s a year old now, her kidneys have been removed, and she is on daily dialysis and a feeding tube, to try and get her ready for transplant surgery. Please pray for health for her and strength for her parents. There have been a number of scares with fevers and seizures.

5/19 - CFO Mom has a request for prayers for her husband. He was unwell for a couple of weeks, and has been hospitalized since going to the ER Sunday evening. He has cellulitis, which may have gone to sepsis. He is on IV antibiotics, and now they have discovered he has an irregular heartbeat which is causing other risks and problems. He is also on a heparin drop to prevent blood clots. It’s very hard to not be able to visit and be with him to hear what the doctors have to say, or see and hear what is going on.

5/23 - The Village Idiot’s Apprentice asks for prayers for two more relatives diagnosed with Covid: one of whom is young and otherwise healthy, and another of whom is 89 and lives in a LT care facility.

5/27 - OregonMuse's older sister, recovering from an auto accident, is now in rehab. Please pray that her recovery would continue to be routine and without any unpleasant surprises.

Job Issues:

In addition to the people who have been on the prayer list for some time, please add Brother Cavil who needs a better paying job that meets his skill set. He also needs “rough places made smooth”.

Relationship Concerns:

Cybersmythe’s wife decided to leave him. He asked for prayers for her peace.

For submission guidelines and other relevant info, please contact Annie's Stew, who is managing the prayer list. You can contact her at apaslo at-sign hotmail dot com

If you see a prayer request posted in a thread comment, feel free to copy and paste it and e-mail it to Annie's Stew. She tries to keep up with the requests in the threads, but she's not here all of the time, so she may not see it unless you e-mail it to her.

Please note: Prayer requests are generally removed after five weeks or so unless we receive an update.

Please remember the Prayer of St. Francis:
http://www.prayerguide.org.uk/stfrancis.htm

Keep calm and pray on!

A terrific highlight of the reason so many people in 'flyover country' are fucking sick of the coastal bubble-dwellers-- they don't know shit about the world outside their little enclaves. 62 That pic of small business getting beat up sure sums it up, don't it? I mentioned yesterday I moved just before this crap hit. I had put together a list of appliances since these are 20 years old and no parts available (thanks GE).

I'd put together a list in early March, but put things on hold since I had more pressing issues. Well, I was looking again this weekend (Home Despot, Lowes and Costco), and almost every appliance had gone up $100-300. Even the rebates were ridiculous. Costco doesn't even bother trying to stay competitive. Meanwhile the poor guys at the smaller appliance stores remain shuttered.

I promise to do my best to avoid amazon, hd, costco when/if we're allowed to open shop again (I live in CA).

76 a comment from last thread, which I think can give us an insight into Trump:

"I kinda doubt the plan at Gaugamela was quite like Stone made it out to be.
Since no good commander ever expects the plan to go 'as planned', and the implication in the movie was, that WAS the plan. Too many variables, galloping your guys around, assuming you weren't going to tire them, that they wouldn't get separated, intercepted, etc.
I think Alexander saw the opportunity at that instant, and went for the gold.
Posted by: DamnedYankee at May 27, 2020 11:20 AM (e284m)"

By making his move a part of a "Plan", Stone completely missed what made Alexander such a military genius. Alexander's plan in this, and many other battles, was to do completely unexpected things which would create chaos and unpredictable situations. THEN he counted on his own skill and quick wits to be able to out-think any opponent in a chaotic situation, which he did time and again. Alexander improvised constantly, and he was brilliant at it - that was his genius.

In a political context, Trump has been doing much the same thing for 3 - 4 years now. His M.O. is to upset everyone's applecarts and then count on his ability to react faster and better to the chaos than anyone else can.

I don't believe these polls at all.

If the numbers are accurate, I think they're reflecting very soft support that won't translate into voting action. The people being hurt will have greater reason to carry this into the voting booth than those who weren't.

Also, I don't believe the numbers because polling is broken, even when polling firms don't tip the scales.

Pollsters intentionally keep their models far out from an election loose. I don't know the reasoning, but adults don't provide predictive behavior for likely voters.

And, the last polls of the most recent special elections were way off, the polls that were supposed to most accurately reflect what was going on on the ground.

139 .the CDC has issued guidelines for schools reopening and it has been observed that if you follow the guidelines rigorously, many schools, particularly private schools, could never reopen.

I'm a school district employee and I have seen the draft plans for reopening-
- social distancing on a school bus means no more than 20 students on a bus that seats 77
- this means that kids will only go to school once or twice a week, and do remote learning the other days
- also they are talking about completely disinfecting every bus after every run, every day. This will take additional time- work hours that must be paid. The pressure on the payroll and on the annual budget will be tremendous, in a job that strives to limit employees to 30 hrs a week
- I tweeted the superintendent of schools that they were going to have problems- his reply was 'you're telling me!'

Posted by: SturmToddler at May 27, 2020 11:42 AM (8D42x)

More fully, it was kind of a non-issue, in that he took some pics, which had a bit of a dark kink to it, and I don't think the woman objected... until her husband got involved.

Then suddenly it was "he forced me" and all that nonsense.

So it was just a routine sex scandal, except... the Soros DA in St. Louis got involved, filing criminal charges against Greitens, who did the "noble" thing and resigned, citing his desire to spend more time tying up his family. Or whatever.

Fast forward and Kim Gardner, the DA is in legal trouble for shenanigans she was up to in that "investigation," and other things, I think. I'm not tracking that these days. Incidentally, Gardner makes Tank Abrams look like a supermodel.

And... Greitens, who has been cleared of any criminal charges at this point, and his wife, are getting divorced. Gee, who could have seen that coming.

New York has 3x the population of Missouri, 30x the infections, 34x the deaths.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at May 27, 2020 11:48 AM

Yep, I ran the numbers for Missouri after that Twitter post on Lake of the Ozarks.

Missouri population: 6,169,270
Missouri COVID-19 cases: 11,558 (0.2%)
Missouri COVID-19 deaths: 671 (0.01%)
Case Fatality Rate (CFR): 5.8%

Just ran the demographic CFR (deaths / cases) numbers for their state:

0 to 19 --- 0 / 441 = 0.0%
20 to 29 --- 1 / 1579 = 0.1%
30 to 39 --- 4 / 1609 = 0.2%
40 to 49 --- 13 / 1755 = 0.7%
50 to 59 --- 43 / 2035 = 2.1%
60 to 69 --- 113 / 1809 = 6.2%
70 to 79 --- 178 / 1144 = 15.6%
80+ --- 324 / 1371 = 23.6%

So if you're between the ages of 0 and 69 years old, your survival rate is 94% or higher.

If you're between the ages of 0 and 49, it's 99% or higher.

But, ZOMG!, we're all gonna die!

You forgot the part where they have to take each kid's temperature and if it is 100 or more they can't get on the bus and have to quarantine for two weeks at home.

The VA has limited the number of people on the bus that runs from Bonham to Dallas to 10 people. Each passenger has to have their temp checked before they get on the bus. If it's 100 or higher you ain't getting on the bus. You also get a wrist band to wear that "proves" you have been checked.

You also get your temp checked if you have an appointment at the VA. If it is over 100 you ain't getting in to see the Doctor.

It's one of the reasons I have been so focused on the fate of Adam Lovinger. He was the guy at DOD ONA who did the whistleblower complaint on Stefan Halper for taking huge paydays from the government for seemingly doing no real work.

Halper is the guy who first targeted Flynn back in 2014 and leaked out false information that Flynn had an affair with a Russian/British spy. I'm sure he was involved in the 2016-2017 attack on Flynn too.

Lovinger was handpicked by Flynn to take a seat on the NSC. The day he was supposed to take his new job he was told by his boss, James Baker, that he was being investigated and had his security clearance taken. He was also a victim of the Flynn hit. Haven't been able to find much on his suit to get his job back.

That's how the Obama administration dealt with whistleblowers.

People wanting to push an agenda have been playing with "Rates" from the beginning of this, to the point that I consider any "Death Rate" number to be garbage unless it is Deaths per Total Population. Which, as you numbers point out, is 0.01% for Missouri.

"Case fatality Rate" appears to be deaths per people who have been tested as positive; BUT if you're only testing people with symptoms who've gone to the doctor, and not the general population, then you're missing all the asymptomatic or very low symptom cases, and the number is worthless. It only has meaning if you have tested the entire population, symptoms or not.

This is also on the long list of BS that we have to follow if we ever are allowed back to our office. Our assembly plants are already going through this. Including some plants having thermal imaging cameras installed that show each worker's temperature as they pass by.

We also will have to complete a health app on our phone before entering the building. And will be issued an official company mask that must be worn at all times. And can only wear that mask, none brought from home.

And if one works within 6 feet or someone else, must wear safety glasses as well.

And disinfect one's desk area throughout the day.

And and and... goes on and on.

The only good news is that they are planing a phased return to the office. Our office has 13,000 people in it and they don't want to bring back everyone at once.

Apparently the phasing is July through Sept, with my area to likely be asked back around Sept.

Gotta hope these BS policies have been scrapped by then.

But word is that they will be in place until there is a vaccine, regardless of Whitmer's orders extending or not.

New normal...

195 Missouri COVID-19 deaths: 671 (0.01%)

To be fair, these are deaths attributed to COVID-19.

We know we're being lied to, but we don't know by how much.

My theory is that instead of telling us that --- "our plan is to have you continue teleworking until there is a vaccine, which could be a year from now" --- and freaking people out, they are making coming back to the office such an annoying bullshit hassle that people will actually ask to continue working from home.

I mean, why would I choose to come back to work forced to stay at my desk all day wearing a mask and not getting up for anything except to go to the bathroom and holding meetings through teleconference at my desk... when I can get the same things done at home --- like we've been doing going on 11 weeks now --- without being chained to my desk, wearing a mask and annoyed as shit.

Word is that they are not going to force anyone to come back, but those who do want to go back to the office, they will have to follow the policies.

I am guessing the vast majority of people will choose to continue working from home.

202 I just read the CDC guidelines for schools. Completely insane. They want HIGH SCHOOL to run as self-contained small classrooms in which the teachers don't switch? They think teachers can teach their own subjects, plus those they aren't qualified to teach?
