Gun Thread: Memorial Day Weekend Edition! [Weasel]

girl w flags scaled.jpg

It's Memorial Day Weekend, traditionally the start of summer with parades, backyard barbecues and long lazy days. How this Memorial Day is celebrated in the Age of Stupidity and "social distancing" remains to be seen, but all too often the real meaning of the holiday is overlooked. It's a day to remember and honor those who have given their lives in military service to our Nation. It's a debt we carry which can never be repaid, but each of us can take the time to reflect upon, and be thankful for, the ones who made the ultimate sacrifice and make certain we are in some way worthy of their precious gift to us.

And with that said, let's get to the gun stuff, shall we?

First up, our pal Sua Sponte sends in the following range report:

I had been researching and reading many articles and watching many reviews on the Ruger 22LR Precision, a scaled down version of their Precision Series, for quite some time and finally decided to, pardon the pun, pull the trigger. I often find myself doing way more contemplating and research prior to most purchases, bit of an OCD type, however, that has led me to making pretty much zero regret purchases.

Anyhow, this thing is a tack driver right out of the box. It didn't come with the scope or bipod. I had both laying around and let's face it, you can't just have a scope and bipod laying around not attached to anything.

These were the first rounds I put through it (Aguila Super Extra CPRN; 40 grain; 1255FPS) and plan on seeing what it can do from 100y and more with other types of ammunition. With 22LR still being fairly available and inexpensive, it makes for a great day of plinking.

Aguila Super Extra 75 Yards 2 pic 1 scaled.jpg
Aguila Super Extra - 75 Yards

I went back out with much calmer winds and put a target up at 50 yards. I've just been having all kinds of fun with this rifle. Plan on doing a bit more testing with other ammunition once I can get my hands on it.

So here we have a nicely documented range test using several types of .22LR ammunition. What is your analysis of the results?

Nicely done, Sua Sponte!! I am happy to see someone else who appreciates plinking with a .22 as much as I do. Keep up the good work!

Next, our pal Butch made it to the range and sends the following:

I finally went to the range today; its been six months. Still pushing down; I need to do this on a regular basis.

I took my S&W 6906 semi-auto, DA/SA, 9mm. It was a LEO trade in. I cannot recommend this pistol highly enough. Currently, Aim Surplus has them available @ $390 each. They also have S&W 15-round mags at $15 a pop.

While I was there, I foolishly checked out the counter wares. I took home a FN Browning BDA, .380 ACP. Basically a Beretta Cheetah 85 without the open slide top.

butch scaled.jpg

Here's a video review of the Model 6906 by AIM Surplus:

Nice job Butch, and congratulations on the new pistol! I don't know about you all, but $390 for that pistol is awfully tempting, but unfortunately they're sold out now.

*****

Our pal redc1c4 sent this link to a nice reloading video series on the SITKA website.

Thanks redc1c4!

And as long as we're talking about reloading, here are some words of reloading wisdom from Midsouth Shooters Supply.

So you've bought ammo, or carefully made your own ammo, now what? Here's an article on proper ammunition storage again from Midsouth.

Much to my pleasant surprise, ammunition seems to be coming back earlier than I expected it would. I checked a couple of the links shown below and popular calibers are beginning to reappear. Please, I'm begging you now - if you're one of the people caught short when the recent hysteria began, please, please, please make it a priority to start stocking up as you can. OK? Please? It's ging to happen again, and it may be sooner than you think.

Virginia

Elections have consequences as we've famously heard, and you know what influences elections? Jackass dipshit politicians pissing off the voters, that's what. Staunton is a charming city in west central Virginia, and has been a reliable democratic stronghold in an otherwise conservative part of the state for years. However, this past week saw a huge shift in local politics when Republicans swept four open seats on the City Council, flipping the city from blue to red. Think any of the recent gun grabbing bullshit had anything to do with this?

Here's an article from the Agusta Free Press describing what happened and what it could mean for the Democrats going forward.

I'm really happy to see this, but we have to stay engaged. Wondering what you can do? How about learning a little more about grassroots activism through Free Grassroots Activist Training presented by the Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

From the Virginia Shooting Sports Association (VSSA):

The Second Amendment Foundation and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms will host a series of FREE online grassroots training sessions run by Glen Caroline. Glen recently joined SAF and CCRKBA as their Director of External Affairs. Most recently, he worked for NRA for 29 years, primarily as NRA's Managing Director of Grassroots Programs & Campaign Field Operations.

There will be three recurring training sessions. The content will be the same, but SAF wants to give individuals the flexibility to choose the one that best fits their individual schedules. The sessions are FREE and will last roughly one hour. The summits will take place on Tuesday, May 26th 7:00 Eastern Time, Wendesday, May 27, 7:00 PM Central Time, and Thursday May 28th, 7:00 PM Pacific Time. Just click on the date that fits your schedule to register for the summit. We all know what happened in this year's session of the General Assembly. We can't let that happen on the federal level. Choose the session that works best for you, register, then log in next week!

This seems like a great way to learn what's going on and to find out how you can help.

Election related: I'm watching the Nascar race tonight (currently under rain delay), and an early commercial break had that awful ad from early in the bug featuring Birx and Fauci asking us to make sacrifices, blah, blah, blah.

Which soured my mood. But the most recent break featured a Trump campaign ad recapping his actions (and how Biden got the travel ban call wrong). It ends saying "He's not always polite, but he does things his way. Not the Washington way. Trump: he gets things done."

Shades of "Mike will get it done" except without the stench of failure. Made me laugh.

23 Last week I did a little load development for the .300 AAC hog hammer. Groups were pretty consistent at 1.5" at 100 yds. Unfortunately none of my loads were very consistent velocity-wise with SDs in the 30s across the board despite having been very careful with powder loading. I think I need to get the OAL gauge out and get the seating depth a bit more correct for the gun. I just SWAGed this batch off of factory ammo length.
Also took the M1 along to give her some exercise. She ran flawlessly, and has a trigger that is only slightly better than fantastic.

27 Yay gub thread!

I did manage to go to a secure remote location and get some range time.

I was getting a little bored with the slow-fire bullseye targets, so my friend and I mixed things up.

First we set out some water bottles and compared reactions to the various ammo. .22s are boring (just make holes), .32 and .380 can make them jump, and of course .40 rips them in half.

Which is fun.

Then we did some self-defense style drills. We put up for silhouette targets and loaded either five or ten rounds (depending on magazine capacity).

The shooter would take a ready position with pistol lowered while the other would call "ready, GO!" and the shooter would try to score at least one hit on all four targets with five shots. If the magazine had ten rounds, the shooter would resume a lowered position, if it was out, he would do a reload.

It was a lot of fun and we learned a lot about acquiring targets under pressure.

37 Said goodbye to the gun I learned to shoot with yesterday. Here's the story:

Sometime around 1975 my brother bought a .410 Stevens/Savage 940E single shot from one of our cousins for the princely sum of $10. Around 1980 my brother gave the shotgun to me and with it I learned basic gun safety and shooting skills from my father.

Fast forward 40 years. The cousin passed on many years ago and sadly, left virtually nothing to his daughter. My other cousin, his sister, was visiting her daughter, which presented the opportunity for me to carry out one of my mom's wishes: return the shotgun to that side of the family. So yesterday I made the trek over to the Savannah area and presented this little treasure, not valuable in price but in family history and sentiment, to my cousin. She plans on giving it in turn to her niece so that she'll have something that once belonged to her father.

43 Well this time yes, I've been to the range(s).

Indoor one on Friday, just to see if I really liked the charge on my new 9mm load (it's OK, might reduce it a tiny bit).

Only went to the indoor one because earlier this week, on my duty day, the range was so busy I didn't get to shoot. A first for me. As the saying goes - "who the hell opened the gate and let the customers in??".

Asked as many as I could why that day - without exception, they'd been waiting til we re-opened, after closing for almost 2 months.

44 Took the 30AR out for some range work. I managed to print a 1.25" 3-shot group at 100 yards with Remington factory 150gr. Core-Lokt bullets. What a wonderful cartridge. Near 308 power that easily adapts to an AR-15 platform. So, of course, Remington dropped production and no longer supports the cartridge.

46 I should mention that one of the guns I used on that four-target drill was none other than the Dreyse M1907 that I bought about a year ago and hated on for three straight months.

You know, with some replacement parts, solid maintenance, a better understanding of its mechanics, it's really fun.

It shoots to the left. This is known, so when doing the drill, I aimed for the target's left arm and the shots landed center mass.

I get now why the cops bought them in bulk - it's small, handy, quick and recovers quickly. When it works, an awesome little mouse gun.

Oh, and no malfunctions. Ironically the HK P2000 had more issues using aluminum-cased ammo than the antique.

52 Nice shooting Sua Sponte!

This week was the shoot off between a DSA FAL SA58 and the old skool Polytech M-14S. Yup, a Red Chinese copy of our venerable M-14/M1A.

The SA58 is a bare bones "voyager" model with a 21 inch barrel. I changed out the rear sight from the crappy Holland to the regular ramp style which goes from 200 meters to 600 meters.

The M-14S is all stock. Many folks change out the front and rear sights, flash hider and trigger group for GI parts but I am going keep it all commie. The "flash hider" is a fake one with no holes cut into it I guess as a result of the assault weapons ban or some such nonsense. It even has the "thing that goes up" for your shoulder hold and a wood stock with fiberglass top hand guard. These rifles, also known as the Norinco M305 are big in Canada but with the recent fascist crackdown I think they will soon be banned.

I shot out to 325 yards on targets from an 8 inch gong up to a half man steel silhouette. Ammo was Aguila 7.62 x 51 150 grain boat tail.

The FAL inched out the commie M-14S. Both rifles shot great but the FAL was able to ring the small gong three times in a row which the M-14S could only hit the small target 1 out of 3.

Also, the FAL's adjustable gas valve allows you to tune in the rifle to tame the recoil as well as have the brass land in a nice pile besides your shooting position.

Look to see in the near future if any of those Polytechs or Norincos head south for sale in the next year or two.

53 Most interesting thing at the outdoor range was a couple of 30-something Russian immigrant guys, who brought some interesting hardware.

A DP-28 (Degtyarev pulyemot - Degtyarev machine-gun), the standard light MG for the Red Army in WWII - the one with the distinctive flat, frisbee-like ("pan") magazine on top. With a bipod.

The guy had built it from a parts kit, which meant re-welding the receiver back together. He'd brought 6 54R rounds of increasing charge to test it. Semi-auto, of course. He installed an AK trigger group. He decided he needed to re-weld it again, was not happy with stress signs, but also said he'd screwed up the gas adjustment.

He also had an RPK, also from a kit. He intrigued me by noting that the PPsh-41 kits are easy to restore, since they're stamped metal. Hmmm. Not a welder, but imagine I could have it done for not too much $ - and the kits are not that much.

Smith Machine has rebuilt DP-28-family rifles for $3K, new receivers etc.

He actually had one of the mags - he got it during "freedom week" in CA, when a judge's ruling suspended the mag capacity law for a week.

54 I used my new bushing type sizing die for the first time today and I have a few questions. How does the expander button not upset the size set by the bushing? I was feeling a lot of resistance at the end of the stroke when the button pulled out and it left visible marks inside the neck. Is that expected? Should I try polishing the button with some Flitz? 57 51 Interesting story about the Pedersen Device. Dubbed US Pistol, Model of 1918 for secrecy, they became US bonfire of 1919. Some did escape, and as we all know, the device and gear are quite rare. When US troops took over one of the German arsenals at the end of WW2, they found a large reference armory with many foreign weapons. Among them was a MK1 Springfield, a Pedersen Device, and all accoutrements. Couldn't even keep a secret back then.

No problemo. For those wanting the long answer, the expander doesn't do much besides get in the way in a FL bushing die. The neck expands when fired and the bushing returns it to the correct, smaller, diameter. I have a separate expander die setup that I use to uniform new unfired brass, but that's it.

75 Those of us who enjoy using traditional muzzleloaders often deal with small businesses for stuff. One man operations are not unusual. But this can have a downside.

I intend to use tow, the waste from processing flax and hemp, in cleaning my BP guns and for other functions. It is both historically correct and effective. The material is washable and reusable and works well in a flint and steel fire starting kit.

The problem was finding some. The lady I used to get it from has either retired or passed on. The phone is disconnected. Other sources list it but it is out of stock. Apparently, tow is a seasonal product. Anyhow, I finally found some at Jas. Townsend and Sons and ordered a pound. That is a LOT of tow and will probably last me for a couple of years.

This is a minor matter but illustrates the need to keep up supplies, like ammo (hint, hint), before your stocks are low or gone.

Weasel is wise in these matters.

98 the ranges here in The Valley just reopened on the 15tn... social distancing, etc.

but i did buy two gubs, on on the 12th and one on the 17th.

miracle of miracles, DOJ actually released the Thomson Contender on time, apparently just a few hours before my earliest P/U time.

3 regular calibers: 223, 357, and 30-30

3 wildcats: 357 Herrett, 7mm TCU and 7mm Tev.

i had to look them all up but, fortunately, they are all commercially available, and i have my FFL/COE magic wand so i can order on line have it shipped to me directly. something else to spend my Malig-Nancy monies one.

the other is a Norinco 1911, which i plan to ship off to be converted to the "Mighty Rowland 460", because we don't have one of those, yet, and i didn't want to F up a perfectly good American gun.

sample 450 ammo here: https://preview.tinyurl.com/ycjjavgl

( i got talked to about using regular URLs this weekend, so i'm being good)

Rowland website here: https://preview.tinyurl.com/yaz4rg9c

they also have a 9mm conversion that is supposed to boot performance to 357 levels, and you can still shoot regular ammo in the gub.

i might send my XD9 in for that.

Two words: Do it.

It's very accurate. Good ergonomics. (If you can compare it to a P-365XL, and its flat trigger, you'll have a reference. The trigger can be exchanged for a flat one (price ~$50 to $90 or so, depending on mfg.) and 15 to 20 minutes of time (there are at least 2 good Youtubes that hold your hand through the process).

It's pocketable, or IWB/OWB, and the nightsights are excellent. Let's just say it's very near the top of the last weapon I'd give up.

Oh, yeah, you can use 10, 12, or 15 round mags (15-round XL mag comes w/a regular 365 adapter).

105 Semi firearm related.

In these, our time of troubles, I have dug out the old X-Box and whiled away the hours with numerous games. The grandkids came over today and I had to entertain tIhem as Mrs. Wrecks and and my daughter prepared the feast. We played Sea of Thieves, a fairly G rated pirate game but second grade granddaughter wanted to play a game with horses so I thought we can play parts of Red Dead Redemption, specifically ride out on the desert and lasso and break some wild stallions. Sure, RDR is a violent game for adults but it we just avoid any trouble, no problem. My plans were foiled when she quickly learned to draw and shoot. Looked like fun to her third grade brother and, just like Johnny Cash, he gunned down a lot of innocent people just to watch them die, including a saloon shots in her underwear, causing the Marshall to quickly form a posse and gun him down in the street.

Best laid plans. No more RDR.

123 84 ... "In 2008 my stepfather died and left his J.C. Higgins, 12ga bolt action shotgun to one of his sons."

My father in law was given a Sears 12 ga. bolt action shortly after the wedding. He didn't hunt or shoot for fun but supposedly blew out the windows on the family barn. It then sat in a closet until Mrs. JTB and I got married. They knew I shot so gave the gun to me along with the vintage ammo. That was my only shotgun for several years. I used it for trap shooting and it did okay.

Where I shoot trap there are guys who are serious competitors and use VERY expensive shotguns. I'm a decent wing shot and a few times I outshot some of them. I figured they would be pissed off. Nope. Most of them wanted to borrow the Sears for a round of trap. Many of them had started out with such a gun and they wanted that old feeling again. Big smiles when they were done.

132 In the same vein as Anonosaurus Wrecks, Tyrannosaur Wrangler, I have been playing a game for amusement the past couple of nights. The Long Dark. Survival game. Pretty fun.

Gun related thing as to why I bring it up. The rifle you have is an Enfield (not called that, but it is in .303 and the muzzle end is flush with the end of the stuck.) It is supposed to be taking place in the Canadian wilderness, so I guess that makes sense well enough. (Although, how easy is it to find .303 British even without a global catastrophe?)

so they are sending me some 300 Weatherby Magnum ammo for the rifle i got for a steal a few years back (some gun smite/idiot owner replaced the original factory stock W/a thumb hole one) we had a line on some original ones, but they went away before we had funds to things like that.

also got 200 rounds of match grade 338 Lapua Magnum, for under $400.

149 More information in regards to Red Erwin winning the MoH the hard way.

They had not even reached the coast when Nicks and Jacks started to attack the formation. One B-29 had already been hit in the wing and had to jettison its bomb load of incendiaries in the hope of making it back to Iwo Jima.

Erwin had noticed all of this and had even been knocked to the deck from flak trying to blot his B-29 out of the air. Then he was given the signal to drop the parachute flares and then readied the phosphorous bomb. Down the tube the bomb went and then it bounced up igniting. It exploded up out of the tube and bounced around inside the fuselage, gravely wounding Erwin in the process. Then it finally landed on the deck. One of the gunners thought of smothering the bomb with parachutes but then he realized if it burned through it would reach their plane's load of incendiaries. That is when Erwin pulled himself together to bravely pick up the flaming bomb only to struggle to reach the copilot's window where he tossed it out.

This had taken all of fifteen seconds from ignition to out the window.

154 Insomnia, that is an open ended question. Do you like .45 or 9 mm? Ginger or Maryanne?

Posted by: RI Red at May 24, 2020 08:21 PM (ebxKR)

155 This week's range visit was the usual mix of .22 with a box of 9mm. As usual, shooting my CZ P07 with and without the Kadet adapter. Also put some rounds with my Gen 3 Glock 17.

Of all the many, many DA/SA guns I've owned, the CZ are the one I recommend the most. Even in DA mode, the gun shoots so sweet. It's not perfect but it's very accurate and reliable.

Most of the CZ groups were good, the G17 group was larger and a little low. I may bring it next week and get back up to on target with it.

That's the problem with a big gun collection: most guns shoot slightly differently. Some want a 6 o clock hold, some want a right on, some (like my SIG) shoot with the dot COVERING the target. So getting good with one gun means I am less good with the rest. Anyway, I like the Glocks, so I need to practice more.

One final note, I did do some 25 yard shooting with the .22 Kadet adapater. My usual rule of thumb is that pistols are accurate for 10' per inch of barrel. There's a little flex but that's my experience. At 25 yards, I was tossing .22 rounds all over. Sigh. But pulling it in to 15 yards (4" barrel) and the groups were much more acceptable.

All .22 shooting was done with Federal copper plated 36 grain brass cased 'bucket o bullets', which works well in everything except the Taurus TX22.

Personally, I'd go with the regular 365. The XL is too big for pocket carry, IMHO. (Although I'd look at an XL for the flat trigger, which seems to be the #1 mod done to it).

Also look at the 365-SAS. It has a 'sight channel' which eliminates normal (and potentially snaggy) sights. Not my cup of tea, but some like it.

Clinger Holsters makes a good pocket holster, and a fantastic magazine sheath.

It was a question that faced the Navy in the 1980's actually - they chose the 9MM, which is, of course, the more accurate weapon, easier to address on a target and had the fewer "carry" issues in the field. But when surveyed which weapon gave naval personnel in combat zones the most confidence...the John Wayner won out every time. Sometimes confidence in the field of battle matters...just saying.

190 BTW, I now have a nice new carry weapon (as soon as I get a holster for it*).
I picked up a Citadel 1911 Officer (3.5" barrel) in 9mm for less than $400 from gunbuyer.com. I was *really* tempted to also pick up the same weapon in .45, but even with the "stimulus" checks I can't justify buying 2 at the moment.

I hope to hit the range very soon with my son, who recently acquired his first handgun (a Ruger in .45). He's trying to get me and the Mrs and the neighbors to make it an outing. (When it happens, I'll make a report. )

Citadel is made in the Philippines and is imported under a few different brand names, evidently. So far my only problem is one of the two mags that came with it won't load all the way to 8 rounds. It cycles nice and clean, appears to have a decent trigger pull and break. I will need to doctor up the sights (they don't have dots or fiber or any aids to seeing them - just dark blued metal) eventually.

(* Any suggestions for best place to buy holsters?)

I've been taking very deliberate (unfortunately, slow) steps in getting the optic, the gun, the dies, and testing every week."

R. I. Red,

I had some discussions with Weasel a while back about that kind of long range shooting. I decided I can't get into (or out of) the various positions and wasn't prepared to spend the bucks needed for good gear.

But the interest in accurate shooting continues so I modified my approach. Seated at the bench only. Seeing what I can achieve with iron sights before going with a scope. Rifles, handguns, and BP all have their challanges to explore. It might be how accurate I can be with a Single-Six with the 22 magnum cylinder or cast bullet loads in a .303 British or 45-70 loaded with real black powder. It's all a game, can be approached within my budget and physical limitations and it's all fun.

The two round extension is the next and near-to-final quest for it.

I'll have two sets of wood for it. One, a very fine, very glossy Wingmaster sporting stock and fore end. I've also got the nicest "tootsie roll" riot fore end around. I just need to find a Police Standard 870 walnut stock of a similar grain and color.

Only has to be in Very Good condition. I can restore it to Mint.

I know this is hard for the Old Guard to absorb, but it's true. The modular aspect means you can swap out calibers pretty damn quick. Think 5.56 is a pussy round? Fine, you can upgrade it to basically whatever you want.

Sorry, had to chase down some 9mm Largo.

Anyhow, you are correct. Churchill was a champion sabre fencer but dislocated his shoulder on his arrival in India. Certain movements would result in it slipping out again, so he chose to go with a pistol rather than a sword when he went into action.

He credits that quirk of fate with not only saving his own life, but the lives of other troopers at Omdurman. His account of the charge where he empties the pistol, clears the throng, and pauses to drop in another clip makes one's heart skip a beat.

The 5.56 got it reputation originally with a 55gr bullet dispensed from a 20" barrel with an arguably too-slow twist. This made the round nearly unstable, and was the driver of the wounding effects seen.

With faster twist barrels, it's much more accurate, but there's a significant velocity loss going from 20" to 16".

I gotta side with irongrampa on this one.

309 From my understanding, a lot of ww2 troops would have gladly traded their m1 Garands for a carbine or Thompson sub. THere was the cool factor, the unusual factor, and at least for the carbine, the fact that it was lighter.

But I have always heard those two weapons as being at the top of the "less effective than you want list" The carbine for sure has always had this reputation. Too bad because it is a hell of a fun gun to shoot. And since we are not always in a heavy infantry war, I am sure it works for most applications.

316 And one guy down on the main range had a beautiful 91/59 - Mosin rifle cut down to "carbine" length. But the thing is these were done much later than the pre-war/WWII M38s and M44s, and saw almost no use. So the bluing on the metal is beautiful, the crowns are perfect, stocks are even nice in their original cheap Soviet shellac.

He loads lower-powered 54R with lead bullets, and it shoots easy, and very accurate out to 200 yds with the iron sights.

Seems like most 91/59s in circulation are Polish or East German. Would love to add one to the safe, or even swap one of the Mosin 91/30s for one as beautiful as the one this guy had. Function and form.

Posted by: DBCooper at May 24, 2020 09:09 PM (y1Mvi)

I don't doubt it has some excellent applications. Just like the Israelis with UZI's. In the right scenario, watch out. But I would hate to have sub if the situation got long range. ANd really, if it where are sub vs a rifle at close range, in the open field, there is only one choice I would think. But for sure they have their applications.

Posted by: Quint at May 24, 2020 09:12 PM (hHxp2)

329 Pretty sure lots of WWII guys had all kinds of preferences for things they didn't have, or loved what they did have. Depended a lot on location, conditions, nature of the action.

There was a "cool" factor with the Thompson, but that's probably because it was publicly known from the gangster wars and the police/FBI wars against them.

My late USMC WWII vet friend had great black/white photos from Guadalcanal, of him and another young guy posing, shorts, no shirts, with Thompsons, under palm trees.

Blow Back or Piston drive?
Posted by: Kilroy wasn't here at May 24, 2020 09:05 PM (2DOZq)

Both. The AR-180 shoots very well and has a different recoil, more like an SKS push but lighter. And the bolt is spotless after you shoot it. No carbon back that far.

The standard AR thump/sprong is easy to get used to and I start to enjoy it after a few rounds. But you do have to clean the bolt well as carbon gets inside it more so than a short stroke piston gun.

339 I'll post here, because it was an entertaining day. I drove up to Carson, WA in the Gorge, where I used to live. First amusement was the old Trading Post. I knew the store had been sold. They had the most amazing collection of stuff for sale. On the window facing the street, the owners had painted "Christian Conservatives", "We are not afraid" and "Wolverines". Drove up to Stabler and was happy to see the church seems to still be going. Someone had painted a board with "Locals only. Respect our community" and nailed it up on a tree next to the road.

Interesting stuff. People n that community used to meet Census takers with a gun. I suspect they don't care if the tourist industry dries up and blows away.

Stevens 44 1/2 single shot rifle. The recticle is no longer visible... I
expect that to be a pricey rebuild, but I love their work.

I found a company called Grubee that sells mounts exactly like I
want... They also sell pedal bike engines, and were in China on a buying
trip and are stuck there...I have 6 "rimfire" scopes, and they are
period correct for my older 22s. Once I get the mounts bought, fun ( for
me anyway) will ensue

415 A question for the experts... In the movie Wall Street Gecko shows off, "The rarest gun in the world," a .45 Lugar.

Real or Hollywood make-believe?

It's real. Two were made and submitted to the Ordnance Department for testing. Whether that makes it the rarest gun in the world is debatable. There must be a number of prototypes where only one was ever produced.

417 Bob the B -

It came with a factory OWB in Kydex which fits the laser ... but I actually removed the laser last year because it was a distraction.
Thing I like about the P290 is the similarity to the j-frame in action; draw, long DA trigger pull, repeat.
Turning on the laser, or thinking about it, was slowing my first round to a degree that I did not like ... I spend a (relative) lot of time on variations of the Whatsisname drill, the guy with a knife charging from 21 feet ...
So, took it off, now like j-frame all same-same; in this config I have a generic DeSantis belt-strap type that I formed to fit, actually I think it's the same model that I carry the j-frame in, just formed differently.

Originally, both cockpits were active, and the pilots could trade off. Later variants had a pilot in the left cockpit, and a radar operator in the right.

452 Wife and I spent Friday/Saturday as instructors at an Appleseed event. Two of seven shooters made their Rifleman score, three of the younger folks got real close. Most fun was one of our new riflemen pulling out a vintage Enfield to shoot the second afternoon.

We both got in some trigger time there. She continued working up her new AR. Found we need to do some more tinkering with the sling setup for standing. She was making 2MOA easily with rounds optimized for my rifle, so this should be a tack driver when we work up a load for it.
I ran my AR as well, and put up a 223/250 score for a requalify. Only one go around as my back was suggesting that more transition stages would be a bad idea. Also debugged a sights issue: I'd replaced an old Bushnell scope with a new Vortex Tactical, and apparently the larger bell on the new scope is amplifying vibrations and working loose the screws on my quick release rings, sending the zero on a random walk. Grrrr. Thread locker, torque 'em down periodically, or a new mount?

We will celebrate Memorial Day by reopening the smallbore class we teach for the local 4H after a Wuflu hiatus. Seems appropriate.

455 No 22lr is going to be a "tack" driver at 100 yards.* For precision, its a 50 yard gun. The problem is the bullet drops through the sound barrier. Just at the sound barrier, there is air accelerating sideways around the bullet. The bullets are nutating a bit, air has tiny eddies, the bullet surface is non perfect. All of these result in the shock wave being more intense on one side than the other side of the bullet for an instant.
A bullet dropping through the speed of sound gets a tiny kick to the side from a random direction. You may have heard of shock wave turbulence. I see it at the range. At 50 yards the bullet holes are touching, tightly clustered. At 100 yards the pattern opens up, no matter how good the gun is.
*note: I have not tried subsonic 22lr at 100 yards. Another reason to get back to the range.
