How To Succeed At ONTing Without Really Trying

Guys, I found out today why we're in this mess:

Jeb!.jpg

Silliness aside, lets see what's on the docket tonight.

Good Use Of Federal Power

Click through to get the whole story.

We Have The Freaks!

Hmmm. Lets check with Senator Vreenak:

fake.gif

Yes, it's a fake, apparently these guys do a lot of this kind of stuff, inserting themselves to news stories, and it's an awfully good one. And when they find the burnt remnants of a Cardassian optolythic data rod which somehow miraculously survived the explosion, any imperfections in the forgery will appear to be a result of the explosion.

I can live with it.

(Quick Quiz: guess what my favorite DS9 episode is? Well, it's either that or “The Visitor “

Tales From The Lockdown Front

The Massive Trump Coronavirus Supply Effort that the Media Loves to Hate Trump is the only person for whom I've ever felt the old punchline is true. If he actually went out and walked on water, the headlines the next day really would be “Trump can't swim”.

‘Relapses Are Through The Roof, Overdoses Are Through The Roof’: How The Pandemic Is Upping Substance Abuse Mark my words: When all of this is said and done, we're going to have lost far more people due to the reaction to the Wuhan flu than from Covid19 itself. By a factor of 5, at least. Probably 10.

‘We Had To Lay Off Our Son’: American Businesses Are Doing Everything It Takes To Survive

And then what happened?

Doing what American entrepreneurship does best: adjusting to changing times and finding a way to thrive. I swear to OG, just once I would like to live in an America that was working properly the way the Founders intended, with minimal government and maximal personal responsibility. I can see why God doesn't allow it, however. People wouldn't want to leave for heaven when they died.

It’s OK to Say It: The Lockdown Was a Catastrophic Error Airquotes “Error”. It's working exactly as designed.

Video captures wild paint fight at Florida Home Depot If Florida residents are starting to act out, things are worse than we imagined.

NASA scientists detect evidence of parallel universe where time runs backward Lucky bastards. In 30 years they'll be enjoying the 80s.

It's Not What You Do It's How You Do It

America’s most illegal record has been obliterated

The Cannonball Run record is now under 26 hours, New York to LA. That means an average speed of at least 107 MPH the entire way. Incredible.

Oh, and just for the record, The Lamborghini Countach in the opening credits of the movie could have walked away from the cops chasing them in that Firebird.

Ted Cruz As Transmission Fluid

The last one made my laugh.

++++++++++++++
This is a terrible poll. And it's from MRG, which runs out of Stanford. I'd have expected better. Or at least more subtle.

Generally speaking, should every business that establishes safe social distancing protocols be allowed to open?
How about open regardless?

To help the economy, which is more important - re-opening society as swiftly as can safely be accomplished or having Congress pass another economic stimulus plan costing several trillion dollars?
That's a push question.

When it comes to federal spending, what worries you more - that Congress will spend too little helping people hurt by the shutdowns or that Congress will spend too much on projects having little to do with the shutdowns?
That's a push question.

In responding to the coronavirus pandemic, the federal government is spending more money than at any other time in American history. Should the government stop spending money on new programs immediately or provide additional financial support for businesses and individuals directly impacted by the shutdown?
That's a push question.

Should new federal spending be directed only to help those directly impacted by the shutdown, or should the federal government launch large new projects to restructure the economy?
That's a push question with no good answer.

Many celebrities and media personalities say that we're all in this together. Do they have any understanding of what most working Americans are going through at this time?
That's a push question.
------
My assessment: conservative-leaning push poll.

100 Still cold, windy, and rainy here. I had to pump out my rainwater cistern today; it was brim-full. Got out the little 2" gasoline pump that I have had for a few years, put fuel in it, and hooked up the suction and discharge hoses. Went to start it. Would.Not.Turn. At all. Took the discharge pipe off the top. Oooh, it's all rusty in there. I took the recoil starter off the engine, and shoved big screwdriver through slots on the starter cup. It broke free pretty easily, and I pulled it through a couple of revolutions.

Put it all back together, stuck a big funnel in the priming hole, and filled it up with water. Forgot to open the fuel valve. Open fuel valve, close choke. It starts up. I pour more water into the funnel. That gets it primed, alright. Suddenly, there's a big conical fountain of water, as high as the eaves on the house, raining down all over me. I got soaked. Did I mention it was windy and cold, yet? Shut down the pump, put plug back in primer hole, start pump again. That little Chinese copy of a Honda engine actually is very easy to start, I will give it that. After a few seconds running, it got its prime again, and the discharge hose filled up, and began discharging water into the small pool already there by the driveway from the rainfall.

I let it run until the intake hose began sucking air, and shut off the fuel valve, and let it run itself out of gas. Went inside, changed into dry clothes, and came out, and put everything away again.

That's not an entirely fair way of looking at it.

I agree with you on the self-induced economic collapse, but this isn't the argument I would make. Let's do some rounding and say we $4T. Before the recession we've caused, that was a whopping 18.7% of GDP (G-d only knows how much that will be at the depths of what's coming).

WWII in its final year cost 37.5% of GDP. So we only spent half as much (equivalently) than the final year of WWII. Of course, we didn't defeat globe-spanning empires with the money - we used it to destroy our own economy and society. One lone, single, tarnished red cent would have been too much.

172 I was on a town hall phone call with my Federal representative, Xochtl Torres-Small last night. I went off on her and the toady state department heads. They were so condenscending towards the guy before me, who was worried about the small businesses in his area. He asked why they couldn't open the counties in NM that don't have hardly any cases or deaths, and just told him our Gov, Lujan-Grisham, had decided the whole state needed to stay just the same until whatever it is their stupid gateway thing is.
I told them we are not children, and should be able to decide for ourselves if we want to wear the masks, and they are killing businesses, and they get paychecks, but a lot of people out in the real world aren't.
I got a little shrill I think, but I am so tired of this crap, I really let a lot of frustration out.
when Torres-Small started to answer, her voice was really shaky. I don't think she is used to someone who is not afraid to blast her and her stupid ideas.

Good for you. Do it. Every time.

I once got to ride down in an elevator with Governor Polis. He was a representative then and was talking at some company in my building. He immediately went into politician mode when I got on and introduced himself.

I said, "I know who you are. You're my representative. Not by my choice, but because my rural county was gerrymandered into your urban district for the purpose of disenfranchising my neighbors and me."

The we got to the first floor and he and his aid left without responding. And now he's the governor.

I have a friend who lives on Staten Island. She's actually enjoying the 'work from home lockdown'. She doesn't have to commute on the express bus so she gets up later (and saves some money not having to pay for that), she can make breakfast which saves her a few bucks a day, too, (she always brought lunch) and she can hit Walgreen's and grocery stores before she has to log in at 8 a.m. Plus, she gets allergy headache attacks from people in her office bathing themselves in perfume/cologne, so she hasn't had to deal with that, either. And, as you said, she gets more done because no distractions/interactions/office drama. Well, no distractions except for her dog sometimes being a pill and wanting attention because 'YOUR HERE!'; she even takes her dog for a walk on her lunch break to get some air. Since she's already home at 5 p.m. log out time, she can get some gardening/yard work done during the week as well. She is not looking forward to going back to commuting to Manhattan.

255 So, The Atlantic's ad and event revenues have crashed and they've laid off 20% of their workforce. That's old news. But for a trip down memory lane...

2015:
Attempts to shield students from words, ideas, and people that might cause them emotional discomfort are bad for the students. They are bad for the workplace, which will be mired in unending litigation if student expectations of safety are carried forward. And they are bad for American democracy, which is already paralyzed by worsening partisanship. When the ideas, values, and speech of the other side are seen not just as wrong but as willfully aggressive toward innocent victims, it is hard to imagine the kind of mutual respect, negotiation, and compromise that are needed to make politics a positive-sum game.
- "The Coddling of the American Mind"

2020:
In the debate over freedom versus control of the global network, China was largely correct, and the U.S. was wrong.
...
The First and Fourth Amendments as currently interpreted, and the American aversion to excessive government-private-sector collaboration, have stood as barriers to greater government involvement. Americans' understanding of these laws, and the cultural norms they spawned, will be tested as the social costs of a relatively open internet multiply.

- "Internet Speech Will Never Go Back to Normal"

Yes, COVID-related lockdowns have been murder on ad spending and events and this plays a big role. But in the space of less than five years, the Atlantic went from investigative and in-depth reporting (slanted Left, but not obscenely) and championing free speech to bowing before Red China and advocating for an end to free speech and privacy. I suspect this was a factor, too.

Yup. I'm on edge. My company didn't do a layoff, but the slashed benefits bigly. Stock, 401(k) matching, bonuses, and various other items were just zeroed for at least a year. This avoided layoffs, but I am worried about Q3 (not not in my division) and at the end of Q4 (everywhere else). I am working under the assumption that I will be unemployed in February. The cuts are coming, I suspect.

The other part of it that is stupid is that if it was true, then in the other universe everything is running forwards, just like this one. And in that one, there are scientists dumb enough to think that the "other" universe is the one that would be backwards. You know, comparatively.

I further hypothesize that the other universe *is* this one. They are one in the same because everyone didn't just wake up and become a gay idiot that assumes the first thing that comes to mind when they see something is the likely truth.

314 Everyone in the know, knows the deal in Virginia. Northam is gov because he has a D by his name. I doubt any Dems actually are glad they have that specific guy in office.

Northern VA is no longer culturally part of the state. You can find many recent web articles that talk about how NOVA, DC, and the MD 'burbs have teamed up to act as one over COVID. I give them credit for at least being honest. The Swamp is its own entity. The Millennials started calling it the DMV and the nomenclature has stuck. It is a post state region I guess. In my day, the last think you would call yourself or your town is the DMV.

Virginia is gone as long as it stays with NOVA. The numbers just do not add up. I would love to be surprised here. I love to see a turnout that turned that state red. But it is a numbers game, unless normals do something so extraordinary it will be studied for decades, I don't see how it happens.

now, if only the Norinco 1911 i DROS'd earlier this week will clear on time. DOJ had been dragging their feet, blaming the ChiCom Crud, and stretching it out to 15-20 days, even the law they wrote says they have to do it on time.

Anything can happen. I am not saying any state is off limits as things do change. Who would have guessed PA would vote Trump and MD would elect an R gov? Sure the R gov is not much but still.

My concern is that I think that pretty much anyone who would have possibly voted R in 2016 did. Remember election night and how far ahead Trump was until they counted those "last few precincts" in NOVA? A lot of people got excited and for good reason. But I saw it a mile away. It is a numbers game. The DC 'burbs are just too populated, too organized, and too Democrat. Hell even a lot of the R's are nominal at best.

Trump really wanted Virginia. He spent a lot of time there and I think he was surprised when he did not pull it off. It is just that the "DMV" is so overpopulated and so Dem. And here I am only considering that they play fair.

I think the adverbs "up" and "down" in this usage add some sense of direction to the verb. To "cook something up" (in the culinary sense) means taking ingredients, and making a dish of them. But to "boil something down" means making a reduction.

In the oil drilling industry, you "make up" a drill string by adding pieces to it, and you "break down" by taking pieces away.

The pay is crap but if you last long enough you can get French citizenship. The French seem to have a love/hate relationship with the legion for very French reasons. It is in many ways the opposite of the idea of the American citizen soldier or the 19th and 20th centuries.

LOL.

the TC is a break action, single shot pistol that you can swap barrels on, so, if you want a scope for various barrels, you basically need a scope for each one, to save the trouble of having to re-mount when you change barrels, and the bother of re-zeroing the scope to the new barrel/caliber.

last year in active duty? I would counsel anyone considering the Army Reserve to take a good look at the Army National Guard. You get the same benefits as someone in the reserves, but your state often offers more benefits.

There are some jobs that are reserve specific and others that are Guard specific, so of course you have have to take that into account as well.

not sure what the deal is now, but, BITD, you had an 8 year commitment, regardless of how you actually did it.

for instance, i signed for 6 with the Guard, initially, then extended for the last 2. i could have gone Individual Ready Reserve instead.

going Active, you sign for X years, depending on your MOS (skill), so they can get their money's worth out of you on AD, then you do the other years in the AR/NG/IRR.

after your initial 8 years, you can sign up for a variety of extensions, depending on what you negotiate. they wanted 6 years for me to go to Pharmacy Technician training, meaning i would have to serve in that skill for that amount of time, but i got out of that because they screwed up on the contract.

there have undoubtedly been some changes, but the basics of the system are likely the same, and you can use them to your advantage, if you are willy.

i was.

or you can get it for signing up for certain MOS's to get a bonus.

i took 6 as a TOW missile crewman to get a cash bonus.

it all varies as to what they need, what you want, and what you're willing to trade for. enlisting is very much a negotiation, and you need to make sure what your signing has *everything* you wanted written down.

another thins is that, if you sign up for school X on active duty, and you flunk out, you will now be given a very short list of other skills to chose from, based upon what your service needs at the time.

i knew people who signed up for a medical skill that, when they were dropped, were offered things like helicopter refueling.

not sure how it w*rks with Reservists though, especially since they would have to fund a second school for the person.

472 Good evening all. Since I'm up, let's take a look at what's happening at Anzio this week in 1944. The "Sitzkrieg" is about to end and anticipation of the big breakout is building:

21 May
Attack postponed for 24 hours so we aren't moving. Very quiet day. We have our programs all out. The P-51's are squared away and every thing seems set. Tomorrow we move - subject to change.

22 May
No change. We moved to a little valley south of Conca (977 212). There is a little farm house here - we eat in the stable. The farmer has a wife and three kids with a fourth on the way. How they can live in this nest of activity I don't know. Tomorrow is the day.

23 May
As per schedule the attack rolled at 0630. 1 Armd, 3Div and SSF making the effort. All other units either patrolling actively or going out on one of their own. Progressing steadily and up to expectations. A bunch of us went up on the hill behind our CP to watch the show. This is only a couple hundred yards from a Long Tom battery. As we sat there the battery was CB'd. Old Mother Earth felt awfully good for a while.
Reports about midnight indicate over 1000 PW's taken and attack going fairly well.

I was amazed at the mention of a farm family living through the whole 5 months essentially in No Man's Land.

483 took 6 as a TOW missile crewman to get a cash bonus.

it
all varies as to what they need, what you want, and what you're willing
to trade for. enlisting is very much a negotiation, and you need to
make sure what your signing has *everything* you wanted written down.

another
thins is that, if you sign up for school X on active duty, and you
flunk out, you will now be given a very short list of other skills to
chose from, based upon what your service needs at the time.

i knew people who signed up for a medical skill that, when they were dropped, were offered things like helicopter refueling.

not sure how it w*rks with Reservists though, especially since they would have to fund a second school for the person.

(yes, active duty bills the reserves budget for training)

I wondered the same thing and am not sure. Two possibilities suggest themselves:

1. Perhaps he was coordinating fighter aircraft cover for the observation L4's for the major advance (doubtful)

2. A P-51 in this context was not the Mustang, but some paperwork designation related to their firing programs for the assault.

Maybe someone else can enlighten us.

---the key take away is that they have to be in WRITING.

verbal BS from the recruiter is meaningless.

a written enlistment contract is just that: a legal contract, and totally enforceable. they HAVE to honor it, as long as you do your part.

ie not flunk out of school, academically. or basic due to failure of PT tests, doing stupid shit, etc.

you flunk out on PT, at least back in the day, they just sent you home, after they chaptered you out. depending on what code the did that under you might, or might not, be able to try again later.

maybe to keep them out of the planned flight path of the shells?

a Mustang getting too near a 155 shell with a VT fuse would get real ugly, real quick.

but no idea why they wouldn't be using Jugs for the ground attack.

maybe as a CAP for the advance?

Posted by: redc1c4 at May 23, 2020 02:39 AM (i6uJ1)

494 if the howitzers were firing at short range targets, the shells would go way up, before they came back down, so keeping a CAP out of their way would be mandatory.

let the Krauts do that: it could be amusing.

That comports with everything I've read. Thanks for your insights.

I read this from an L4 pilot who was in the Pacific theater:

On one sortie a bullet came through the floor of the L-4, traveled upward between Gale's legs, passed through the bill of his "lucky" hat, and then exited through the top of the airplane. The incident was both shocking and thought provoking: Bruce Gale realized that one could get killed in his line of work.

504 Because of their capability for short take-off and landing, and using improvised airfields the L-4 and later L-5 in the ending stages of WWII were beginning to be used for casualty evacuation, a role that in Korea and Vietnam was taken over by helicopters.

511 Bander, it is an interesting footnote.

Jodl signed the papers in the middle of the night with senior Allied officers in Reims, France, on May 7, effective 11PM May 8. So there's our VE Day.

For some reason the Soviets weren't entirely satisfied with this, and insisted it happen all over again, with their senior officers, in Berlin, evening of May 8, effective May 9 - thus, Victory Day in Russia.

It's the company's fault for not having a vault of cash to fall back on.
Plus they're so inflexible to not be able to react to whatever I think we should do now to stop the spread.
