8 Reposted from late in last thread, in honor of Memorial Day:

It's May 25 and the big breakout is finally under way. And I don't mean the 2020 coronavirus lockdown, I mean the beachhead at Anzio in 1944. Let's take a peek inside my dad's journal. This was the day American forces from the Monte Cassino front linked up with the right flank of the beachhead forces. And the race toward Rome was on! And my dad got to fly over the battlefield in the Stinson L-4 observer plane.

25 May1944 -
Exactly six months in the line -- and what a "semi-versary". The 91st Recon from II Corps came breezing up Hwy 7 to meet the 36th Eng down by Littoria. There was great celebration and our boys took out.
The 3d [Div] pushed up toward Cori, surrounded and finally isolated Cisterna, and went on towards Valmontone. Cori was reduced late in the afternoon. 1 AD [Div] pushed well out to the North. Contact was lost at times, and the Arty had a tough job keeping up. All looks well. Rome may not be so far off.
Taylor took me for a spin over the battlefield. We were up for two hours, watched the shooting in Cori, looked in on Cisterna, saw some Tiger tanks and a few PW's, then went around to various gun positions Gerry had vacated. We saw ten guns either destroyed or abandoned. It was really quite a show.

God bless those who have given their all in service to this great nation in the name of liberty. We will never forget while we still draw breath.

Not great art. Not something I would hang on my wall.

But -

This is exactly what I'd like to see hanging on the wall, in prominent display whenever I enter a gov't building or post office.

A several other similar paintings.

Instead of the usual lame-ass and poorly composed abstract "art" which they usually hang.l

I just noticed Rockwell's different techniques for portraying their headgear. The two World Wars' soldiers helmets were done in a different style (And one that I like) than those for the soft headgear of all the previous men. The metal helmets gave a texture to them reminiscent of a stage through which you pass when you are hammering sheet metal into a concave shape, just prior to beginning to use a planishing hammer in order to obtain a more polished and reflective surface on your piece.

It is interesting, too, how he barely worked any of the Revolutionary War soldier's headgear into this picture.

When all is said and done, the Confederates were fighting to maintain slavery.

Not an American value.

Plus, I'm guessing here, but when this was painted, there were probably still veterans of the Civil War alive.

The Union soldiers fought for the United States. The Confederates did not. It would've been seen as disrespectful to include them among those who fought for America.

I went yesterday, flags in hand, to decorate my Pop's resting place. He served in the European Theater, WWII. I had heard that there would be no remembrances this year but thankfully some group (probably the VFW) had all of the veterans graves flagged.

If Rockwell painted this during the war, nobody knew the end date. The dates, I notice, are a mix, usually the start of the conflict (though 1918 is an exception), so he could have put 1941.

On the other hand, what if he painted this prior to 12/7/41, and he intended the last soldier to be "This is Today's American Soldier"?

Great-Grandfather Poppins fought in the Navy during the Spanish-American War. I have a leather booklet with his "Continuous Service Certificate" which, sadly, is rather illegible because of age. The ships I can tell he served on were the Solace, Oregon, USS Villalobos, Independence and finally Columbia, with the notation "less than a month on board" before he was discharged in NY on March 4, 1901.

I wonder if there's a way to pull up those ships' complements online to find his name.

In fact, I really don't have much love left for a huge swath of "my country", and find it difficult to believe why anyone would voluntarily enlist to protect so many filthy cowards I'm constantly forced to work/associate with. Where there equally despicable citizens calling the US home in 1941? Of course. But their percentages amounted to a radical minority, primarily confined to the outer corners of universities and artist colonies. Now, they represent the majority in at least 1/3 of our 50 states, and nearly 40% of the population as a whole. So no, the sacrifice of so many great young men is no longer worth it. Not by a long shot.

Mr. NEC asked me this morning why I was so perturbed about the Memorial Day special PBS ran last evening, it was a rerun from last year. Asked him what Memorial Day was for, he said it was to honor those that had fallen. And that's why I was perturbed. It also honored veterans and wounded warriors which are both noble causes but not what we are supposed to do on this holiday.
Veteran's Day is what that's for.

147 I am past the time of realistically expecting anyone to expect me to take up arms.
But for a number of years I've been saddened to think how my view of the subject has changed.
I still remember when turning 18 going to the Post Office and registering for Selective Service, thinking that if Uncle Sam ever wrote me back, I'd be there on the dot.
More recently I've viewed the flag something along the lines of a successor entity that still retains the branding of the original, but in fact is under new management.

If I were, theoretically, called to do my duty today, I think I would do so more in the service of my comrades, and to defend those people and those parts of the country still true to being called "Americans" -- but not with the same sense of belonging to one, indivisible United States under a common flag and purpose as I would have had when 18.

This is a "proto-draft," meaning that when I get to the end, I have to go back to the first half already written and join it up to what I have now to make it a full book. Then there needs to be a lot of polishing and "set dressing" before I sent it out for thoughts. You probably won't see it until Thanksgiving or so.

171 I'll share one other little bit of info from my dad's WWII journal. From the time he landed in North Africa in late 1943, through the Italian campaign and later the landings in southern France my dad made almost daily entries in a conversational style until Jan 31, 1945. After that there were only two additional entries before the journal abruptly cut off altogether, one covering a one week span and one covering a six week span.

The date may be purely coincidental, but Auschwitz was liberated by the Russians on January 27th. Given a few days for the horror at Auschwitz to filter through High Command and down to VI Corps HQ I have often wondered if that news and other confirmation of the rumors of the Holocaust changed my dad's viewpoint from that of a young artillery officer on a grand adventure to something much darker. He never spoke of it with me in later years.

Milady asked how you came by his diary, and I don't recall. Refresher?

**********

Dad died in '03. The diary was among his things and Mom shared it with my brother who went through the handwritten journal (in two separate notebooks), and did a full page-by-page transcription, published with one scanned sheet of the handwritten journal along with the accompanying transcript on each page-- as a limited run for just family. I began digging into it in more depth when I was writing the somewhat light-hearted and whimsical "To Save Us All From Ruin".

Oddly enough 3 of my brothers really appreciated the nod to Dad that I intended with that book while 3 of them were apparently offended on some level.

So that goes all the way back to 1980 and Reagan (but excludes Carter). Includes the "success" in Beirut, Lebanon; Clinton passing on Bin Laden; W starting long war in Iraq (why?) and Afghanistan (without end), and Obama (Libya, ISIS, Syria, Iran).

So much success.

A quick search says that John Farrow, Mia's father, directed it; and Brian Donlevy and Macdonald Carey were the stars. Carey was mostly a character actor, I think; Days of Our Lives began as a vehicle for him in the '60s. Donlevy played heavies but also heroic leads in the '40s and '50s.

Kid: 'WHAT Union?"

No, you ought not.

For historical reference, the official flag of the United States had forty-nine stars on the blue union between July 1, 1959 and July 3, 1960, and then fifty stars after that. A star for a new state is added to the union on July 4th of the year during which it was admitted. Alaska was admitted on January 3, 1959 and Hawaii was admitted on August 21, 1959.

But guess what? He IS the best candidate they have.

He was consistently polling better than Trump in the very states the Democrats need to win, so that's why he's there. That and the black vote.

No one else has name recognition or "gravitas" (lol, i know) and none of the fantasy candidates --Michelle, Oprah, Cuban---want any any part of taking over a wrecked economy.

Not going along with "psychotic, murderous generals", Lincoln is one of the greatest presidents despite instituting the draft,he suspended habeas corpus and ignored court orders; he jailed editors; he used military force to keep the Maryland legislature from meeting so that it could not vote on recession, in order to preserve the Union.

I think of these things when judges say: "the constitution is not a suicide pact".

And he made the great, enduring mistake of choosing Andrew Johnson as his VP.

I'm not entirely sure, since I don't talk with those three brothers, but yeah, the hamster thing, in the sense of "making light" of a serious weighty subject.

On the other hand I firmly believe my dad would have gotten a chuckle out of that. He certainly would have set me straight on the liberties I took with artillery physics and such, but in a helpful way, not scolding.

"No, no, no. If you're going to have a hamster steering an 8 inch howitzer shell he's going to have to be rearward of the midpoint, otherwise he's going to throw off the whole angle of incidence..."

"...list of men belonging to the 26th regt. who agreed to tarry six weeks from the last of Dec., 1776, as returned by Col. Loammi Baldwin, dated Trenton, Jan. 1, 1777."

He was a true "Winter Soldier" as described in Thomas Paine's "The Crisis." He helped row George Washington across the Delaware. And then fought on to Assunpink Creek and Princeton.

As Paine wrote

"I consider Howe as the greatest enemy the Tories have; he is bringing a war into their country, which, had it not been for him and partly for themselves, they had been clear of. Should he now be expelled, I wish with all the devotion of a Christian, that the names of Whig and Tory may never more be mentioned; but should the Tories give him encouragement to come, or assistance if he come, I as sincerely wish that our next year's arms may expel them from the continent, and the Congress appropriate their possessions to the relief of those who have suffered in well-doing. A single successful battle next year will settle the whole. America could carry on a two years' war by the confiscation of the property of disaffected persons, and be made happy by their expulsion."

That 'single successful battle next year' took place in Princeton Jan. 3, 1777.
