Just as Hollywood loves movies about making movies and Broadway loves putting on shows, artists seem drawn to paint the painting process.
As art, I like this a lot. I love the composition. All the zones of light blocked off in squares. For a studio it seems quite sterile. There is no dropcloth, no paint on the floor. He has it set up so that he gets light on the easel. We have no idea how the model would be lit. The open door is jarring. It makes the room feel like just a part of the house instead of the intimacy of an attic atelier. Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 28, 2020 09:39 AM (gd9RK) 46

Aside from the slight gleam of the bowl in the far background and the picture frame, this painting is rather lifeless. Very unusual for a Scandi artist.
From a personal point of view, that doorway leading to the room with the bowl is too damn narrow. I don't like houses with the accomodation of an airline seat. Posted by: JTB at May 28, 2020 09:54 AM (7EjX1) 122
Why is the framed painting so high? Because when the artist gets up from his easel and turns around to bash his head on the wall for inspiration, it'd be counterproductive for him to thump it on the canvas.

The lighting chosen for this painting is unusual. Everything is so dim, it must've been very difficult to mix the paint colors accurately in a well-lit are in order to render the poorly lit scene properly. I think one reason paintings were hung high was so the wood ceiling board trim could be used to secure the nail and wire rather than chipping and gouging the plaster wall. The advent of drywall and spackle made this practice obsolete because it is easier to patch drywall.

Yes. If Trump vetoes it, it's gone, plus that would make major headlines. They no longer have enough votes to override the veto, and an attempt to do so would keep it in the headlines for weeks. Even the corrupt media would have to cover that. Better to cut her losses and let her media cronies sweep the whole thing under the rug. Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at May 28, 2020 10:36 AM (hKLpI) 296

The politics of this thing is murky, but Trump's veto threat seems to have clarified a bunch of stuff about it. FISA isn't really popular (or well known). Trump has the bully pulpit and he's finally decided to use it against reauthorization. I think that changes the calculus. Steve Ditko's weird stories (pre-Spider-Man) had several dream-within-a-dream or similar short stories. Ditko could tell a story better in three pages than the kids today could tell in a series if graphic novels. /slightly-related I tried drawering something deep like that once. Posted by: mindful webworker link: Clear Reception at May 28, 2020 10:51 AM (wmyHK) Ditko was a damn fine artist. He did some really trippy stuff, especially in Doctor Strange comics. One of the few Ayn Rand fans that ever worked in the funny pages. Got him blackballed eventually. Because comic books are run by progressive fuckwits. IMHO:
The painting is high to attract the gaze of the model. The scene is that of a portrait being painted in the model's house, not the artist's house - hence the poor lighting. It's from the model's point of view. The painting is high up for the model to focus on, an old trick still used in photography. I dunno, it supposedly makes people look better. Removes their dewlaps and jowls maybe. Removes shadows from the eyes. The room is sparse because the model/home owner cleared it. The bowl is detailed to show you where the model is looking at because the artist left that way, leaving the door open because he is coming right back. What do you not see? A mixing palette. A case with paint pots or tubes. A stool to stand the palette on. A jar with thinner and brushes, ready for use (or with dirty brushes in them). A flaw in my guesses is that there is no drop cloth under the easel. Drop clothes are put down first, especially in a stranger's home who is paying you to paint their portrait. Those payments are how you pay for a couple of months room and board as an artist. The weird sepia tone/gloom might just be poor quality linseed oils that have darkened over the century. So Ace, what where you drinking again? Posted by: Matthew H Iskra at May 28, 2020 11:26 AM (day4e) 419
This is interesting because it is a study in light and texture. Darkness to light, coarse to shiny smooth. Everything in this is someplace on the light scale and the texture scale. That is all that is in the painting.

The light on the wall looks like a halo from the invisible artist.
Posted by: DXM at May 28, 2020 11:59 AM (w3c6D) 423
Why is the canvas shadow falling in the opposite direction of the way the light is coming in? All the other shadows are going in the correct direction.
Posted by: Jonahex at May 28, 2020 12:02 PM (UvQXJ) 424
The painter did multiple versions of this setting each of which suggests the presence of the artist somewhere in the space. The light from the unseen back window illuminates the back room. The painting on the wall is called "The Battle of Copenhagen" and was painted in 1801 by C.A. Lorentzen. It is mounted high to prevent sunlight from damaging it. One of the versions of this painting was auctioned by Christies in October 2018. Posted by: Don at May 28, 2020 01:07 PM (BWb23) 425

The best part of the pic is that the chair and easel are positioned to paint something in the area where the viewer stands. It leaves the viewer wondering what it is that is interesting around himself.
