Could You Have Picked Up a Resistance to Covid... Without Having Ever Been Infected with Covid?

A new paper suggests that 40-60% of the population already has T-cells which are activated to defend against covid, even though they've never actually encountered covid-19, because covid-19 is so similar to other coronaviruses.

To explain this on a fairly technical level which might lose some readers:

T-cells identify viruses by the little doodads sticking out of their bulbous bits, and I think the ideas is that these other coronaviruses have doodads which are not exactly like covid's but which are close enough to covid's that T-cells know to treat it as enemy (and block those doodads so they can't jimmy their way into healthy cells).

But you know, I'm speculating in a hopeful direction rather than in an apocalyptic, we-must-weld-ourselves-inside-apartments-or-we'll-all-die direction, therefore my speculation should be banned on Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube, and will not be treated as Real Science by the Fake Twitter Scientists' Club.

61 Dunno if you've been following it or seen this ace, but CDC (spit) now estimating infection fatality rate ...... at around 0.26, about double that of seasonal influenza*, and right where "amateur" analysts have had it for a while.

One Twitter analyst, a statistician @EthicalSkeptic, pegged it *exactly* (meaning, he has for some time estimated the exact number CDC's current best estimate provides).

The appalling, really amazingly poor performance of most public health authorities and "experts" in all this is stunning (and disastrous, obviously). Not so much the early panic, but the period following when some basic outlines came into view - that would be *weeks* now.

* stratified for age, and medical condition, this bug is far, far less deadly to far fewer "demos" of people than influenza, which scatters fatalities around a bit, though still mostly concentrated in the elderly

84 Hi Ace!There are two types of T-Cells. CD4 and CD8.The CD4 T-cells don't produce anitbodies...that is the job of the B-Cell. The CD4 T-Cell looks at the bits of enemy that the B-Cell is showing. If the CD4 T-cell sees enemy on the bit the B-Cell is showing, it causes the B-Cell to release antibodies that are specific to the enemy (and cause other downstream effects like making more of the same type of B-Cell that is specific to the enemy). The release of the antibodies by the B-Cell, can among other functions, prevent the virus from entering other cells.
The CD8 T-Cell looks for cells which show signs of the enemy. These CD8 cells kill (via apoptosis) the cells which show enemy infiltration.

90 "Herd immunity" can vary quite a bit between different contagions.

This was long, and well, known.

All respiratory viral epidemics (and almost all epidemics of all kinds) run a very classic path, the asymmetric bell curve with the long right shoulder.

Surprise!

This one is tracing *exactly* that pattern.

Everywhere - from the most "locked down" place, to the least.

Hmmm.

No, you can't scrape the dirt off me but beyond washing my hands before eating (and when they were obviously dirty) I just haven't paid much attention to hygiene.

I believe this paranoia will cause long term damage to kids. Are they going to use this to keep kids from school? I think the lack of socialization at young ages like this will be extremely harmful.

But using Kremlinological tools, reading tea leaves from the scant direct evidence, it looks like the greatest public administrative debacle in modern history. 170 Very early on there were real men of science talking about a degree of "natural immunity" ... I've seen different terms (innate), but the whole system is incredibly complex, and in time the body overcomes ... unless we put everyone in a bubble till Gates supplies the vaccine for the world, and a new vaccine for every new virus they release.

Say 40% have this generic SARS immunity, and 25% have already had the update (exposure and recovery from CV-19) ... then we are at or near Herd Immunity, the real way to recover. We already flattened the curve as demanded by the faked models, now we need to get another 10-20% of the population mildly infected by opening everything ...

Natural Immunity ... as has happened with every other virus when there was no Trump/Liberty existential threat to DeepState and China.

174 I'm pretty sure I'm one. I'm above middle age. I've never required prescription medication. I've never been sick (ever). I've never had to use my health insurance for anything.

I receive "invitations" every freakin week to donate blood because I made the mistake of doing it once about 10 years ago, and the antibody and interferon counts are off the charts.

Yes, I know, this sounds like bragging. But, here's the thing. I'm told by a friend in the medical community that abuse of antibiotics is likely one of the reasons some people are getting hit harder than others. The reason is that your body doesn't develop a natural immunity as well, and doesn't produce the interferon proteins that are key in natural defense against diseases. BTW....what country abuses antibiotics more than any other....(hint: it's not the US).

As I said three months ago, they were portraying this as creeping death of the bible instead of what it really was, a fairly typical viral outbreak, which happens ALL THE TIME.

Within the last 20 years we've had at least 5 major outbreaks, most originating from China.

Will we find out that many Chinese in Wuhan province had built up immunity to reject the viruses outright because they have been exposed to so many?

I still believe a bioweapon in the works. It's a bioweaponry lab ffs. Whether it was released by accident or on purpose (by one or many individuals), it doesn't matter. It's China. A total lockdown under those circumstances, with 99.99% control of the media, shutdowns of various corners of the internet for spreading fake Russian propaganda and endangering lives, with no possible backup from the DOJ ever, or even the Supreme Court in a few years time, and then a mail-in voting bill and heaven knows what else, it would have been the coup de gras on the Western World.

Which shows me clearly *why* God stepped in when he did. Because civilized planet Earth wasn't going to survive The Hag in tact. That's my opinion. I know it's outrageous. But I knew damn well they had some real shit planned to take place under Hillary. It was obvious at the time. They weren't really hiding it. This fits that.

I agree. I don't think it was attack. It turned into one, but it didn't start that way.

China did some things (like restricting intra-national travel from Wuhan, but not international travel) that were attack-ish, but I think that was another example of what happened here. Our enemies - foreign and domestic - capitalized on it *bigly* to move their agenda.

269 Interestingly, there is a Japanese anime series called "Cells at Work!" that is basically all about Covid-19 --even though it came out a couple years ago. The lead characters are a T-cell (a boy) and a red blood cell (a girl) who have sort of an on-again off-again semi-romance as they circulate around the body having all sorts of biological adventures and bumping into each by accident. Mostly the action involves the T-cell boy and his buddies ganging up to kill viruses, bacteria and other villains that try to invade. Then the show has side character -- macrophages, neutrophils, platelets, etc. etc. -- it's actually very well made and very entertaining. I watched it before this whole Covid thing started, not knowing how relevant it would soon be.

Here are the details -- recommended watching:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cells_at_Work!

Turns out they're making a season 2 right now -- I bet they will have a whol bunch of episodes specifically about Covid-19.

It's basically "Fantastic Voyage," but without Donald Plaisance.

If it was super fatal, China may have invited a "response" from the rest of the world, or even Trump himself, who is unpredictable at best.

To merely be disruptive and shutter the world economy leaves a "response" in the escalation category.

Posted by: Orson at May 22, 2020 12:39 PM (0QVqB)

For the last 20 years or so, we've been told that antibiotic overuse is creating resistant strains. The question I have is, how are they determining that? Is it that they're observing that the same doses of antibiotic no longer work? Which seems to be a good starting point for the question, but it's frankly anecdotal in nature, if taken alone.

Given that all our antibiotics are now being manufactured in Chi-Nah, and that they are notorious for cutting corners for profit and just because "fuck you, gweilo", what are the odds that the antibiotics they're shipping to the rest of the world are being diluted or even just vials of distilled water and sugar pills? What are the protocols for QC batch testing of Chinese-made antibiotics?

Definitely call. Over the years we've done the online "tell us about your house" surveys as well as the ones they mail out now and again. We had to call for some reason (probably a broken pipe claim) and it was like they never looked at our responses. I was insuring whole rooms we didn't have, not to mention they failed to note the fireproof siding we told them about, and a few things on the heating system, plus they somehow missed the fire hydrant directly across the street we've told them about since 1988.

I don't doubt that - and one of the stories that surfaced about a month ago (and then disappeared again) was about a US team that was actually allowed to visit that lab a couple years ago, because the NIH was providing them some funding - that team reported, among other things, that the Chinese Biolab was run so sloppily and badly that it was amazing there weren't outbreaks from it every single day.

You're talking about the other side of the coin. Antibiotics are, essentially, applied to combat bacteria....not viruses....and from what I've heard, bacteria adapts and overcomes (Marine philosophy)...making the antibiotic ineffective. But, what I'm talking about is the body in general. Viruses are kept in check by proteins your body produces called Interferons....and there are studies showing that continued use of antibiotics for whatever reason lowers the natural production of these proteins. So...double edged sword of immediate gratification (stopping the bacteria) causing long term issues with your overall defense of other diseases (viruses).

Spike Protein, presumably.

>>> other coronaviruses have doodads

SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 are fairly similar in that their spike proteins bond with the ACE II receptor on lung cells to gain cell entry. This very similar pathology is why any treatment effective against SARS-CoV1 should have at least *some* efficacy against SARS-CoV-2.

Other Corona Viruses have spike proteins that bond to different receptors but that doesn't mean they aren't similar enough to produce some resistance upon infection and recovery. Corona Virus outbreaks have happened in the US before.

HCoV-OC43 and HCoV-HKU1 are somewhat similar, the latter potentially causing pneumonia and bronchitis similar to SARS.

I still think the ChiComs released it intentionally, but it was to shut down the Hong Kong protests, which were being touted as serious enough that they were a real threat to the regime, especially since they were spreading to other provinces.

Releasing the virus in Wuhan was just the ChiComs being clever. Directly dosing HK with the virus would have been too obviously an attack on the protesters, at least as seen by the West. But the virus got away from them, they totally lost control. Once they got over the shock of losing control, they saw the opportunity to take advantage of it worldwide.

That's a conspiracy theory just pulled out of my ass, but I actually find it to be damned convincing. I mean, what happened to the big, ginormous HK protests? We haven't heard diddly squat about them in months. And they were getting set to bring the commies down.

Releasing a pandemic in Wuhan that spreads to the rest of the world in order to retain power in Chi-Nah would be an easy decision for the commies to make, considering their willingness to slaughter millions in more direct ways.

San Fran did some testing at a homeless shelter, and LOTS of them tested positive for Covid Antibodies, but did not need medical intervention.

Something like 40% if memory serves.

Posted by: Romeo13

Yes -- it was even over 40%. And yet NOT A SINGLE BUM REQUIRED MEDICAL TREATMENT. Even though most of them had it or formerly had it. Because Covid-19 is extremely mild or asymptomatic in 90% of people.

My theory is that

-- Covid-19 exists
-- It naturally evolved in disgusting Chinese endangered species "wet markets" and jumped the pangolin-human barrier
-- It is extremely infectious, even more so than your typical coronavirus
-- However, it is not more deadly than, and perhaps is LESS deadly than, standard coronaviruses
-- Our term "influenza" is actually just a word that means "disease caused by a coronavirus," so that Covid-19 is in fact just "the flu"
-- Coronaviruses have been circulating in the human population since time immemorial, and every single year new variants emerge, but most of the time we don't notice or care where they emerge
-- The coronoavirus variant that emerged in 2019 is not really that remarkable or different from the coronavirus variants that have emerged is many previous years; what happened in Wuhan in 2019 happened in this-or-that city in 2018, and prior to that somewhere else in 2017, etc. and the new flu strain spread around the world, and it was just shrugged off as that year's "flu season," and life went on as normal
-- This happens literally every year, with minor variations in severity; Covid-19 is merely average, at worst, when i comes to the annual new coronavirus pandemic, which happens every year like clockwork.
-- The only different between the Covid-19 flu and the standard flu is that it is more infectious but less deadly.
-- Hence, the entire lockdown was for no purpose, and was completely unnecessary, and was only done for political reason and as a result of a mass panic induced by the media to advance their agendas.

359 Well, whatever the origin...the simple fact is that the Democrats unleashed their big plan for winning the White House yesterday.

They went all in on the "second wave" of the virus hitting in the Fall. The purpose? Well, simply put, Trump's re-election is going to be tied to the economy, and the Democrats don't want to give any incentive to the millions of businesses that might just hire back the employees they laid off to streamline their finances. They want uncertainty...lowwwwww consumer confidence.

So, now it's all about the SECOND WAVE OF DEATH!!!

Trump was quick to come out yesterday and say...."we aren't shutting down a second time." So he gets it...consumer confidence it now the name of the game.

I think (maybe) another factor in antibiotic resistant bacteria is modern super-antibiotics like ceflex, biaxin, and azithromycin.*

Sad to say, but if you contracted a penicillin resistant staph bacteria in my parents' generation, you would just be dead.

Now, they can hype you on one of these badass drugs (great!), and send you home, where their unpleasant side effects cause many people to discontinue before the cycle is complete (bad!), and then spread around the same penicillin-resistant bacteria, but now with new & improved resistance to the more powerful drug.**

The virus also mutates. And think about it.

If the virus is fatal, there is less chance of it passing on than if it only makes you sick, and you can "infect" or pass on the virus.

What generally happens, is that the viruses mutate extensively. There are usually a handful of people that may carry the most virulent strains (most toxic or lethal), while a lot of people end up carrying a very weakened (mutated) strain, whose presence will also stimulate the body to make it resistant.

There's a page on the Internet that shows the mutations so far for Covid 19. It has mutated a lot. And likely, it will mutate into at least a few forms that are pretty mild. This may be the form/strain that persists. Every once in a while, it will mutate back into a more toxic form, and then disappear into a mild form again.

So it may "come back" in the Fall, but then again, it may not. Really, nobody knows. A lot of people talk out of their ass pretending to know the future.

No, the flu virus and Covid Coronavirus are totally different.

But we are exposed to "common cold" viruses, which include rhinovirues and Coronaviruses.

The biggest problem is this is a brand new virus, so it infects everyone at the same time, not like the flu that worked its way through the population over 6-8 months or even several years. The infects everyone at once collapses health systems like Italy, Spain, and France; and almost in NYFC too.

Otherwise I agree with much that you said.

379 I have considered this, but then how do you explain kids being so immune and old people so vulnerable.

*********

Kids get minor respiratory viral illnesses seemingly constantly, so they have recent and frequent immune system exposures to a variety of infectious ageents (schools, daycare, etc.). The term "snot-nosed kid" exists for a reason.

Over time, immunity to various agents wanes, and the 'memory' of T-cells declines. Older people have less exposure to viruses in general, hence higher suceptibility to a particular virus or strain of virus.

384 I had mentioned this is a thread a day or two ago, and to me it makes some sense (or they were lying about the virus)

We were told this was so horribly contagious, but right now they said 5 million people have had this, so .075% of the world. If it is as contagious as they say, and it may well be, why isn't that number much higher? Possibly because a large percentage just can't get it.

SARs and Bird Flu went away without a vaccine, it seemed to hit a ceiling with its ability to move from host to host, so perhaps there is a crossover with antibodies (say you had the flu, built those antibodies and they killed off any covid virus before it could infect you, so you wouldn't show up as having Covid Antibodies either) Hell who knows if these strains have a long term immunity from similar viruses (something they'll never tell because then there's no vaccine sales)

Too bad there's very few who will actually try to study all the sides of this virus, and when they do they'll just be labeled wackos by those invested in this lockdown.
