Risky Business [KT]

rishc.jpg

Could you have guessed last year that
this year cutting hair would be risky business?

Have you noticed a few changes in recent days in the ways that people are assessing risk? Have you noticed more emphasis on risks generated by lockdowns just in the past, say, couple of days?

Maggie's Farm has been featuring a number of posts and links recently which are related to risks people face at this time and assessments of risk vs. safety more generally. Some of these include ideas from Mike Rowe. For a while now, since way before The Virus, Mike Rowe has been kicking around the idea of "Safety Third". A little more on that later. I think this video about putting safety first during the time of the Chinese Virus is fascinating:

We can be a safety first country, but only for very, very, very short periods of time. And then we're reminded that the chief goal of living is not merely to stay alive.

Following up on that video is one in which the original cheerleader for essential workers talks about the hidden dangers of labeling other workers as non-essential.

Those with a literary bent may be interested in the story told in Mike Rowe's podcast concerning the Staplehurst Train Disaster. It features a novelist you may recognize, plus some ideas about risk assessment and character.

ASK A FIRST RESPONDER IF SAFETY IS FIRST

Safety Third

A walk through the "Safety Third" concept:

On Dirty Jobs, I was struck by the number of safety professionals who repeatedly insisted that nothing was more important to them, than my personal safety. "Your safety," they said, over and over again, "is our top priority."

I usually heard these words moments before I was invited to walk up the cable of a suspension bridge, or field test a stainless-steel shark suit, or climb into a bosuns chair to wash windows at the top of a high-rise. I still hear them today from pilots who invite me to strap myself in as they attempt to defy gravity in a pressurized aluminum tube that travels through the air at 600mph. And now Roger, I'm hearing them from you. You're telling me safety must always be first, no matter the cost. . . .

I'm not trying to be provocative, or insensitive. As I wrote on my first day of quarantine, I have two parents in the at-risk category, and I'm terribly worried about their well-being. But assigning a cost to preserving human life is hardly a new calculus, or a sign of misanthropy. We humans are constantly deciding which calamity to worry about, which disaster to panic over, and which tragedy to outright ignore. Just yesterday, 24,000 people died of starvation. The same will happen tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow, and the day after that. Over nine million a year die of hunger related illnesses. Why is this not a global emergency? Why doesn't cable news report these tragic deaths every minute of every day, like they do with this virus?"

Anyway, to answer your question, Safety Third was my slightly subversive attempt to start an honest conversation around occupational safety back in 2009, and to acknowledge the unintended consequences of exaggerating the importance of safety on the job. For what it's worth, it worked. Attached is a short video that spells it out for you.
And here's one of a hundred articles written by various safety professionals who actually agrees with me. . . .

Be careful out there...

Does this quote fit into these concepts somewhere?

Try to exclude the possibility of suffering

which the order of nature
and the existence of free-wills involve,

and you find that you have excluded life itself.

C.S. Lewis

Sports

Mike Rowe notes that as official safety measures increase a sense of safety, people tend to take more risks. But still, individuals vary in how much risk they want to take:

Wow.

Probably wouldn't want to try this now. Not enough social distancing.

Do Democrats need to do a new risk assessment?

There are all kinds of risks. Is is safe for Democrats to let Joe Biden talk?

Was anybody surprised yesterday when Biden said If You're Black But Can't Decide Between Me and Trump, Then You're Not Black?

Well, ZUBY, a non-American black, had a good laugh about this on video.

Come collect your boy, Obama. Collect 'im. This guy's done.

He posted a helpful campaign slogan for the Democrats.

stayblack.jpg

After more sober reflection, he did a serious thread:

I'm seeing a lot of people trying to pass off Joe Biden's #YouAintBlack comment as merely a 'gaffe' or 'joke'...

But it wasn't.

It revealed a deeply rooted and pernicious form of racism that is extremely pervasive in left-wing politics. Let me explain...

Every black person is aware of the power and pain of being considered an 'outsider' within one's own 'race'.

This happens everywhere, but it is a common phenomenon particularly amongst Black Americans, due to history and culture. (2/14)

So, when Biden suggested that 'you ain't Black' if you consider voting for Trump instead of him, he exposed a much deeper form of racism.

The sense of 'ownership' of Black people. Unearned allegiance and entitlement.

It was a vile statement... (10/14)

But it was also honest. Because that's how a lot of these politicians and 'progressives' really feel about black people.

Like they own us. (11/14)

You might want to read the whole thing. In an earlier reaction, a guy some here may recognize wrote:

Literally an entire 15-years worth of protein wisdom columns are coming to life before our eyes.

To all those who read me for years, thanks. And you're welcome.

No, Biden is not the only one who thinks this way. Be careful out there.

Hope you have a great weekend with an appropriate amount of risk.
This is the Thread before the Gardening Thread.

11 When folks talk about state tyrannies, I often see comparisons of states like Michigan, Florida, Texas, et al., but everyone seems to forget about Oklahoma.

So, I'd like to remind everyone that no state oppression has been harsher then here in Oklahoma. Being caught outside your home without a mask and the right papers risks prison. The only services deemed 'essential' are grocers and donut shops. All the guns are confiscated "to prevent 'problems' during the quarantine." Most of the population is now homeless, bodies are stacking up in the streets, crematoria are cooking overtime, and all criticism of the government or health experts is considered criminal speech. Avoid Oklahoma at all costs.

Unless you're a hard-core Moron/'Ette looking to flee from behind the Karen Curtain, in which case, just kidding. C'mon down.

I think President Trump's original target of opening by the week of Easter Sunday was the right target to minimize the damage.

Based on Michigan's 03/16/20 start date for Whitmer's original order, that would have been 4 weeks. Not good, but not too bad either.

Then President Trump himself came out before then and recommended a 30-day freaking extension until the end of April, after he originally said #TwoWeeks. The end of the two weeks would have opened things up after Easter, if I remember correctly.

So yeah, this has been a complete cluster, from both the federal and state task forces.

Also, Fauci stated on February 17th that the risk for coronavirus infection in the USA was "minuscule". Yet, weeks later, he does a complete 180 and advises the shutdown of the country until the curve is flattened. Then, weeks later, when the curve is flattened, he shifts his recommendation to "until a vaccine is developed."

What a cluster...

I think "you're not black" when viewed side by side with "clean and articulate" is pretty suspect.

64 Also, Fauci stated on February 17th that the risk for coronavirus infection in the USA was "minuscule". Yet, weeks later, he does a complete 180 and advises the shutdown of the country until the curve is flattened. Then, weeks later, when the curve is flattened, he shifts his recommendation to "until a vaccine is developed."

What a cluster...

There's no doubt in my mind that Fauci went Draconian later on to atone for his earlier "minuscule risk" comment. And now he's dialing it back because he knows how overboard we went. In other words, he's ALWAYS trying to be ahead of the curve on being right.

68 The YT series of Milton Friedman vids (from back in the 70s) addresses the risk/cost aspect of a free society and government's role, vs free market.

He uses several examples, such as building a car that is 100% safe as opposed to 'safe enough' and let the market decide.

All very applicable to our present circumstances.

87 Was anybody surprised yesterday when Biden said If You're Black But Can't Decide Between Me and Trump, Then You're Not Black?

Posted by: Open Blogger at 11:15 AM

How is what Biden said any different than what Democrats have always said? Even prominent Blacks in the Black community.

Hell, if a Black person is conservative, he or she is said to be "acting White" or "not a real Black person".

What Biden said is no different than that attitude that is prevalent on the Left, within the Democrat Party and within the Black community as a whole.

Go back through the years and check what people have stated about any popular Black conservative pundit or politician or athlete, etc. Nothing different than the attitude expressed in Biden's statement.

Which is why I don't see this issue lasting for him much longer than a week or so.

I think perhaps an easier explanation for Fauci's flipping is that he gets his talking points from somewhere else.

I still go back to the one time he showed some emotion, when a reporter asked him if Trump was telling him what to say. Fauci vehemently denied Trump dictates to him what he says, and then for added emphasis, with heat, he said NOBODY tells him what to say.

Eh, that's what we call in the business, a reveal.

I think what is under-explored here (not sure, I didn't follow any of the links, just read the post here), are the twin human needs: self-determination and self-efficacy.

These two things feed each other, and even when we're not conscious of them, they're always at work inside us.

And what we further know, from all the individual and societal evidence, is when people have reductions in both, systems break down. Communities disintegrate into crime and chaos, and individual's minds and bodies deteriorate into diseased rot.

And so I'm wondering, the focus over the last few days on some of these "ancillary" effects of closing down, is that coming from a genuine noticing of these things, or did somebody signal it was time to change the narrative?

I wish I wasn't so cynical, but this world is becoming less mysterious to me every day, and I think most people shy away from the truth because it's so much worse than we imagined.

Lake Geneva since the lockdown, and he's not returning to Chicago ever.
Then he made some descriptively obscene remarks about Pritzger.

I have to disagree somewhat. I didn't live a particularly great or interesting life. I wasted years on not living my life at all.

Most of my memories, especially the early ones, suck donkey balls and I wouldn't wish them on any person of good will and decent character.

HOWEVER... The good part is, and I hope that this can help someone, anyone, is that my life does demonstrate, however imperfectly, that you can take an enormous beating, have all kinds of things go wrong, have your entire sense of self stripped away, and have to come to grips that the people you trusted most fucked you in all kinds of ways - and still get back up. And change. And become a better person.

Mrs. Squirrel recently read the CDC guidelines on opening schools. Halfway through them she looked up and said, "is this for real?"
Short of martial law, there is now way that the CDC's guidelines can be implemented or enforced. It isn't even remotely tenable. To say its a bridge too far is an understatement. Who the F wrote them at CDC clearly doesn't have kids or hasn't been to a school recently. An example (I'll try to dig em up) was that only one kid can be seated in a school bus seat at a time and must remain 6 feet from another child. Desks must be separated by 6 feet. No cafeteria lunches etc.
We could have endless posts about the ones i just cited. I mean did anyone even remotely put thought into these guidelines? Any small bit of planning and analysis?? FFS.

164 some of my recent foraging trips, and trips to take my husband to get bloodwork/checkup/etc have left me feeling like we are living in a version of Milo Minderbinder's Great Loyalty Oath Crusade from Catch-22, kicked off by Col. Cathcart's plan to prove himself worthy of promotion by proving his unit as the most patriotic and American.

It all ramped up incrementally, with ever-more involved ways to demonstrate and tally one's bone fides, and all came crashing down in an instant when fierce Major ______ De Coverley (the man so scary no one knew his first name) came in from the field and went to the mess hall.

He was confused by the piece of paper they handed him to sign, in order to get a tray, and tossed it aside. Scanning the room, with its long lines of men backed up reciting the Pledge of Allegiance to get silverware, and singing the Star Spangled Banner to get potatoes, and so on, he shoved his way forward and said "Gimme eat."

The kid behind the counter handed him something to sign and he swept it aside with "GIMME EAT".

The kid looked at Milo in terror, who nodded, and the kid provided the major with a tray of food.

Turning to go to a seat, the major saw the lines of men staring at his food with longing, and declaimed "Give EVERYBODY eat."

And just like that, the Great Loyalty Oath Crusade was over.

I keep looking for Major ______ de Coverley when I am out.

The funny thing is that it really depends on where in Chicago you are regarding any effect you're seeing.

My brother is a Chicago police officer on the south side. He says they are not enforcing anything and no one on the south side is adhering to social distancing or masks or anything.

Sure the businesses and such are closed or open with restrictions per the order. But as far as people not travelling or keeping social distance or wearing masks or not having parties bigger than 10 people... not happening. People are doing what they want and police are not being ordered to enforce anything.

Different story though for a church and their parishioners on the north side of Chicago though.

I think it's the same all over in these locked down states. Selective enforcement of the rules by the government.

Not too long ago, in the before time, there was widespread discussion advocating for cutting back on the use of antibiotics. Because they tend to cause some microbes to mutate into drug resistant strains, AND they cause immune systems to become lazy. Furthermore, if you kill all bacteria in your body, you're eliminating the good stuff and the bad, and your body won't function right without our little helpers inside us.

210 Are "First Responders" actually "Third Responders"?

The true first responder is the person who sees something and then does something. It can be a four year old whose Mommy gets sick so the child calls 911. We call those children "heroes".

The second responders is the person who gets a call for help, often the 911 operator, who then sets in motion a response.

The third responders are often the police and fire personnel.

There can be fourth responders who get a call for backup or for a multiple alarm for a fire.

The most important is the responders of those of last resort. They are the people who bring the incident to a resolution.

They are the people that the situation demands today.

However, the libs have a toehold in Spokane and its already becoming purple. Evidence for this is the amount of hobos and urchins milling about the streets there. Soon Spokompton shall go blue. 223 There is an old saying that goes "There are old pilots, and there are bold pilots, but there are no old, bold pilots." People have said that for years. However, a certain amount of boldness is required, or you never leave the ground.

Ernest Gann, who died a while back as a very old pilot, said that the important characteristic wasn't timidity, it was wariness. It is more important to understand that you are taking a risk and to understand the risks that you take than it is to avoid risk.

Last week, I got the oil changed in my car. As I waited for the technician to do the work, the TV in the waiting room showed some morning news show. One of the segments featured a doctor, who answered questions of the form "should I do X to avoid Covid-19?" After complaining about the people in Wisconsin bars who might get Covid as they enjoy a drink with their friends, he answered all the questions in the affirmative. Of course you need to take all the precautions.

I scoffed at this. I mean, the people in Wisconsin could also get drunk at that bar and stagger in front of a truck or something, or they might try to drive home three sheets to the wind. That's far more likely to have serious health consequences than the possibility they might catch a virus, but the doctor's answer to the questions were even more pernicious.

I've been turning this over in my mind and yesterday, I thought of an analogy. Suppose you hire a lawyer to get you out of a speeding ticket. You might then ask said lawyer if you should continue to speed. Of course your lawyer is going to answer that you shouldn't, even if said lawyer speeds home from his office after your meeting. But that's the wrong question. The right question is: What would I risk if I continue the risky behavior? What could I lose and what are my odds of losing it?

Do you get what I'm saying?

So passing by the local Beaumont Hospital on my way back from my grocery pick-up, I see the huge letters in front of the Hospital spelling out "Heroes Work Here!"

At first I just rolled my eyes. Then I had a thought... (no, I didn't hurt myself)...

It strikes me as wrong to be putting those signs up.

I mean, you don't pass by military bases and see them put up signs saying "Heroes train and work here!"

In fact, you don't see or hear any military members call themselves heroes at all. *Other* people call them heroes.

But it just strikes me as completely lame for groups of people now going around calling themselves heroes and advertising it.

Posted by: Cybersmythe at May 23, 2020 12:24 PM (edlKR)

The army has a simpler saying, "stay alert, stay alive."

It's invoked when going INTO a hot zone.

Some people carry that message with them everywhere they go. Situational awareness when driving, situational awareness when walking down the street. A certain wariness when listening to politicians and news readers...

I think superstition and panic roll in from people who realize too late, they haven't been paying attention to what's going on around them.

So yeah, as you say, it doesn't really have anything to do with boldness. It's just about keeping one's eyes and ears and the other senses open to what's actually happening.

I'm hoping the people who are leaving are what's left of Republicans and flip states like Wisconsin to permanent in the R column. Because Illinois will be plus 30 Democrat no matter what

Posted by: TheQuietMan at May 23, 2020 12:08 PM

You know, I did not think of this until reading your comment.

I have been getting frustrated with the state of Michigan --- knowing our rights can be taken away with the snap of a finger by the whims of a madwoman for as long as she feels like it --- and the state of the auto industry in general --- move to "electrification" of everything, not based on customer demand, but because of government regulations and penalties if those regulations are not met.

I started thinking about both a new career and a new state of residence. A solid red state.

But, knowing that Michigan is currently a toss-up state, if people who share both my frustration and my conservative voting record start exiting the state, that turns MI from toss-up to solid Blue.

So for my own life sanity, it's probably better to leave Michigan and go to a solidly red state. But, if conservatives leave toss-up states and go to solidly red states, then we lose those toss-up states and the Left controls the federal government again.

Then again, Texas is a solid red state and yet they were locked down as well.

So who the fucks knows anymore...

He actually doesn't like Trump. He's not one of us. But the essay is "The 'Oh, Grow Up' Election". And he is as much superior to BC here, as he is at baseball crankery.

Clyde, I've been thinking for about a month now that nurses/healthcare workers are being elevated to "teacher! (cue sounds of angelic choir and trumpet fanfare, while a legion of heavenly warriors draws swords in their perpetual lionized defense)" status.

And I think it is part of the push to use this to nationalize government healthcare if the dems win.

Posted by: lin-duh en fugue at May 23, 2020 12:37 PM

I don't know who is to blame for this...

Is it the responsibility of the government (President?) or media to keep us all informed of the facts?

Or is it the responsibility of each individual citizen to research and inform themselves of the facts?

On the one hand, I could argue that if the message people have in their heads is that this virus is a death sentence, then the President is not communicating well enough to people to make them understand this is not the case.

On the other hand, I go to the Michigan coronavirus website and run the numbers they provide and find out for myself that the "death rate" (deaths / cases) is 4% or less for every age demographic under 60 years old.

And then I go further and find that the "death rate" for even the worst age demographic (80+) is still only 35%.

Which means 65% of people in that demographic are not dying.

So definitely not a guaranteed death sentence if one gets it.

But whose responsibility is it to get these numbers out to the general public so it is well known?

President? Media? Each individual citizen?

I don't know that answer for the general population. I only know that, for me, I always do my own research to get informed on an issue or current event.

The frustration for me is always when I know I have certain information publicly available to everyone, but no one is reporting it (not the media, not politicians, etc.) So I feel completely helpless when I am sharing this information and then people just reply with "but that's not what they're saying on the media!" or "but that's not what Trump and his task force said!"

Many people don't see (small, sometimes huge) miracles in their everyday lives. Attribute everything to themselves. I think those are the most miserable, because every failure is absorbed not as a lesson and a challenge on a path to something better (like a ball in a pinball machine) but as a personal failure. But, when one realizes that it could have gone a million ways, but it went your way and it is a miracle, life becomes a bit brighter.

Should be patently obvious, but evidently it's not, the one thing your kids need to learn is that you love them.

They need to be reassured consistently.

So you CAN be a parent who is overprotective, or one who basically lets kids do what they want as long as it isn't TOO dangerous, but whichever side of that spectrum you slide on, the one constant has to be that basic message. You care about them, you love them, you want to them to grow up and be decent human beings.

If you do that, your kids will thrive.

Thursday the hot bartendress was back. The four people in the bar were not wearing masks, and she asked me if I wanted a hug. I got to hug the hot girl.

I think those are the most miserable, because every failure is absorbed not as a lesson and a challenge on a path to something better (like a ball in a pinball machine) but as a personal failure. Clyde, I've been thinking for about a month now that nurses / healthcare workers are being elevated to "teacher! (cue sounds of angelic choir and trumpet fanfare, while a legion of heavenly warriors draws swords in their perpetual lionized defense)" status.

And I think it is part of the push to use this to nationalize government healthcare if the dems win.

Now Nurses! are just like Teachers! in some eyes, and we all know teachers are sacred, and the schools deserve every penny they demand.

Posted by: barbarausa at May 23, 2020 12:35 PM

Yep, good points.

I should say that I don't have too much of an issue if people in general want to admire nurses and doctors (or teachers for that matter) as heroes. Though I wouldn't go that far to call them heroes, since they are just doing the jobs they studied and trained and signed up for.

But, people see things differently. If I had a family member dying of COVID-19 and a specific nurse or doctor worked around the clock and eventually saved the life of that family member. I would personally consider that nurse or doctor my hero for their actions.

But what just rubs me the wrong way is hospitals not only declaring themselves heroes, but advertising and bragging about it.

Like I said, you *never* see military members going around calling themselves heroes or military bases putting up signs saying "Heroes train and work here!"

And even when we honor military heroes with ceremonies at sporting events or with mentions at award shows or with giving them medals, you still do not see military members milking the attention for all its worth.

A big part of the reason we generally respect and honor military members as much as we do is because they are so humble about their actions and achievements.

I am seeing quite the opposite from this COVID-19 situation.

Posted by: Insomniac - Ex Cineribus Resurgo at May 23, 2020 12:49 PM (NWiLs)

Maybe it depends on how one defines "hero."

Is a hero someone who does something extraordinary for others?

Is a hero someone who overcomes a substantial obstacle and completes their task?

If it's the former, then people with great skills or who find themselves in just the right circumstance can claim heroism where others can't. In other words, there are...what half a million or so nurses in this country? Doing their jobs? If there's that many, and they're all doing more or less the same thing, then it's not heroism by that measure.

If it's the latter, then NOBODY really knows who the heroes are. We can only guess. But the waitress who gets up at 5AM, after tucking her kids in bed, with whatever hardships they have, and she's dealing with a dying parent, and is struggling to make ends meet, and that deadbeat prick of a father to her children is not doing anything to help with the kids... And she gets up, goes to work, and has a warm genuine smile for everybody, well that's pretty darned heroic if you ask me.

Posted by: rhomboid at May 23, 2020 01:00 PM

But when the press fails at their job, where does the responsibility fall to make sure the public is informed?

We live in a world now where we do not need to rely on the press for information dissemination.

I think President Trump knows this as well. Which is why I feel like this COVID-19 situation is like the Bush 43 years with the WMD and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

For years, the press lied about the intel and lied about the success we were having in the war effort. And Bush 43 did zippo to correct the narrative or defend himself. He left everything up to bloggers and pundits.

It feels like a similar situation now. If you and I can find this information and some guy on Twitter can create that great chart, then President Trump and his people must know this shit too.

So why are they not disseminating the info and leaving everything up to us, just like Bush 43 did?

Risk

1.
There's a certain risk involved

There's danger in the course you take

There's a certain risk involved
in almost every breath you take,
So no matter what you do
it's going to look like a mistake....

387 Vendette, this is included in what I call the "dumbing down" of the society and culture. Meant literally, in this case.

There being essentially no press, in the sense of an independent entity with varying tendencies to question almost anything, is key.

But the performance of the actual responsible specialists, and the political powers who have (seemingly without doing any thinking of their own) relied on them, has been disastrous since the earliest panic proved unwarranted.

And I don't see even a hint of accountability or push-back or correction, at any level, nor the prospect of it.

I like to point out a bunch of stuff that no one really seems to care about. But I do it anyway. Chief among them is that weird DNC they ran in 2016 with all the silver/grey covering everything. If you look up pictures you will see red white and blue lights and some flags. But the majority of the production that was broadcast was actually this weird sexless, soulless "decor" (term loosely used).

It was space age (?), so I guess they were trying to show that they were "winning the future". But I couldn't help but notice how utterly commie the whole thing was.

Despite all the Left's initial protestations about "free love", the *real* Left is a society where there is no life or sex at all. I mean both things happen, but only on the sly and all subservient to the end goal - the worshiping of Dear Leader and The Collective.

Merrill Hess: I was at this party once. I'm on the couch with Randa McKinney. She was just sitting there looking beautiful, staring at me. I go to lean in and kiss her... and I realize I have gum in my mouth. So I turn, take out the gum, stuff it in a paper cup next to the sofa, and turn around. Randa McKinney throws up all over herself. I knew the second it happened it was a miracle. I could have been kissing her when she threw up. That would have scarred me for life. I may never have recovered. I'm a miracle man.

409 The way I read the bit about the high school student who "started" the 6-foot rule is that it was a science fair project that she was fed by her father. The CDC didn't pick it up from her. That notion has been bumping around for a long time but not really rigorously studied. They codified it as 3-feet in their 2017 paper on non-pharmaceutical measures for an influenza pandemic.

So she invented the 6-foot rule the same way that Achmed invented the clock radio by gutting a Radio Shack clock and putting it in a cigar box.

But overall I sense a dramatic failure by CDC to do its job, at every stage of this, even probably in following their *own* standing guidance on epidemic policies (quarantines not relevant when prevalence hits 1% or more, for one central disastrous example).

And the performance of the Trump team in all this, at least starting mid-April, cannot possibly be a good story, if only any of it were known, or likely to be known. I mean in the fundamentals, not the industrial/logistic response, which has been excellent.

So evidently, a quick perusal of the internet reveals there were two cameras that captured SOMETHING. Both lined up at an entrance gate/parking lot, on pillars on both sides of the the drive lane. The one pillar obscures the view from one camera, and the other camera is ONE that pillar!

So... the tail of the plane appears on the obscured camera, and the lined up time frame of the other should show the body of the plane.

It does not. It appears to have been doctored.

434 So evidently, a quick perusal of the internet reveals there were two cameras that captured SOMETHING.

Why?
Posted by: BurtTC at May 23, 2020 01:42 PM (hku12)

So, cameras set up specifically to monitor a possible assault on the building by way of the gate and front drive. On opposing pillars, and looking at each other.

Why would expect either one of them to catch more than a fleeting glimpse of an airplane passing above the gate at 500 mph? And they were probably using low frame-rate video, in a system installed years before 2001. Video surveillance systems tend to be installed, and then left in place forever, as long as they appear to be working. It's not a "sexy" thing for managers to upgrade. Witness all the truly shitty videos we see here of holdups, etc.

What would make me suspicious is a crystal-clear video of the airliner, approaching in slo-mo, with the N-number clearly visible, and the panicked faces of the doomed passengers pressed against the windows.

Let me start by saying I'm open to all kinds of theories especially regarding malfeasance among our elite.

---

In that same vein, when someone approaches me with any strange conspiracy tale, my immediate response is "OK, let's see what you got."

I don't trust this government or anyone even remotely "rich."

But, as I stated, there is no scenario where "it wasn't a plane that hit the Pentagon" that makes one smidgen of sense.

You don't steal a plane full of people, kill them, hide the plane, then hit a building with something else and claim it was the plane.

That's. Fucking. Stupid.

Posted by: RKae at May 23, 2020 01:59 PM (Tk204)

I don't have an overarching theory, nor do I think there is one that would adequately explain what happened to THAT plane, if it didn't hit the Pentagon.

My point is, how is it the video footage is so spotty, and it is. We have seen NO other angles, other than these two cameras on either side of the parking lot entrance.

Aaaand... it appears BOTH cameras show the tail of the plane, but the camera that SHOULD show the body of the plane, doesn't. Meaning it was likely photoshopped, before it got released YEARS after the fact.

I don't need a theory to know there's something wrong with this picture, and I don't need to solve the mystery to acknowledge it's strange.

Bottom line: Don't trust anything. Question everything.

Deep staters gotta deep state. It's almost as if our "intelligence community" is play acting at being an intelligence community. Bunch of reprobates and sociopaths, and they need to be stopped.

OK... here's my conspiracy theory about doctored images...

With 12 years experience in graphic design, I can state with 99.9999% certainty that Obama's birth certificate released by his White House was a forgery. And a poor one - exceedingly amateurish; I could have done better as a child.

Why?

I think it's also fairly certain that he was in fact born in HI. Even if not, a couple centuries worth of existing immigration legislation and precedent define Obama as a natural born citizen by virtue of his mother.

There was no need to forge a BC.

My theory is that the Birther controversy arose at the same time as (and partly because of) the revelation that Barack Obama lied about his citizenship to gain advantage in college admissions.

This is embarrassing in and of itself, and it calls into question his own self-identification as "American," and his Americanism, and would invite more scrutiny into his carefully hidden college records which likely show a lackluster, third-rate student performance.

So I think the Obama team viewed the Birther distraction, which could never gain traction, and made his critics appear non-credible, as a godsend. And I think they released that clear forgery as a means of throwing more fuel onto that fire, to discredit those people should they ever decide to make a big issue of his REAL citizenship scandal.

466 >>>I think it's also fairly certain that he was in fact born in HI. Even if not, a couple centuries worth of existing immigration legislation and precedent define Obama as a natural born citizen by virtue of his mother.

Make that a few decades of US Law. Prior to the 19th Amendment women and children derived their citizenship from the father.

Immigrant woman married an American male she and the kids were instantly deemed to US Citizens.

Immigrant man marries an American woman, she and the kids were deemed same citizenship as the man,

This continued for decades after passage of the 19th Amendment then someone realized a knock-on effect of the 19th would be that US women would keep their citizenship and a standard form was published decades after that realization to correct and restore citizenship. Never looked far enough into to see if restored citizenship effective date of marriage or date form was processed. But they did publish the form through the WWII era.

This is all very 'natural'.

That said. I think Barry was a bastard and his mother entered into a fraudulent marriage to keep her drunken boyfriend in the country. BC adjusted retroactively as needed. So pre-19th Barry, being a bastard an all, would have been a "natural born citizen" but as BC was tweaked... not so clear. For all we know the BC as written the day of birth 'father' was blank.

One clear pattern Democrats exhibit is blaming the opposition of EXACTLY what they themselves are doing. That approach has a whole lot of advantages. But there are some big pitfalls, too - if you're not careful, if you don't plan well, you can end up with a #MeToo situation or a Ukraine thing.

Of course, with the media to run interference, those little oopsies can always be (largely) ameliorated, and Mr. Biden is a walking example of that, in both cases. He likely won't be elected President, partly as a result of those little oopsies.

But the overarching scandals will never reach broad public consciousness, and the Democrat-controlled Uniparty Deep State will carry on to fight another day.

The Dems have crept left for decades, and that always leaves living, active politicians open to criticism for prior positions and actions.

But this bizarre, full-tilt leftward lurch they started in 2008 and kicked into Warp Gear in 2016 has left them wide open to an assault from a nontraditional, flexible "conservative" candidate like Trump.

That's a big damn hole in the armor and if they think he won't lance them in it, they're idiots.

And given that all of their candidates followed on to AOC's Green New Deal and Castro's "taxpayer funded abortions for men"* proposal, I think they are, and they can't even see what they are doing to themselves.

Problem is that so long as she keeps extending her orders, the 'social distancing' and mask and 'no gatherings of more than 10 people' requirements are still in effect.

Which may not mean much for the average person saying 'to hell with that', but means everything for the businesses which cannot afford to defy her. I'm sure many businesses would like to open up fully with zero restrictions for their employees and customers. But there is always the risk of some Karen reporting them for not following Whitmer's order.

So whether or not people are following the orders, so long as they stay in place, businesses cannot fully open without restrictions.

Which also means sports cannot open.

Think of all the sports leagues in Michigan --- all across the state --- which cannot happen, because of the orders in place:

--- professional sports (NBA, NHL, MLB, MiLB, MLS)
--- college sports
--- Little League leagues, softball leagues, hard ball leagues

And think of how having all those sports activities cancelled --- not to mention concerts --- affects the customer base of restaurants and bars and such.

Yeah, the fact that she is extending the orders is still a huge deal as it affects businesses, especially small businesses.

I saw a local Coney Island restaurant that is in the same mini-mall where I pick up my groceries at Kroger. It had a big sign saying they were open again for inside guests. But the place was empty from what I saw. 10am on a Saturday would previously attract a large breakfast or brunch crowd.

I agree with you, but you have to separate the China virus itself from our response to it--if you want to sway people. There really were deaths from that and the anecdotal evidence from my own family and from where I work bears this out. Okay, I'm in New Jersey, 15 miles out of NYC, so I realize it's different in Montana, Texas and elsewhere.

But yeah, the timing of the shutdown and everything else is suspect.
Trump and his massive rallies touting his economy and the lowest unemployment "ever", his supposedly pulling 20-30% of the AA vote, the failure of shampeachment, Biden & Burisma---all had to be done away with.

495 I also want to say that the Democrats may not like some of the 'changes" that are coming as a result of this Chinese Virus Shutdown---illegal immigration--and the free shit offered to them, environmental climate change models--all of these will be much harder to sell a shaken population.

Posted by: JoeF. at May 23, 2020 04:26 PM (CqE5x)

496 point is, how is it the video footage is so spotty, and it is.

I have similar questions about the Kennedy assasination. There are network tv pictures of the couple arriving in Dallas, and quite a few of their stay in Dallas, but no professional pictures of the parade. Always seemed strange.

I'm told that Wray's investigation has a lot to do with Durham using a bunch more resources...which has him concerned that he can't toe the line anymore.

What does that mean? Wray can't keep all his employees on message, because Durham has more resources available to himself? What line is Wray toeing?

500 And gosh, here we are with a phony China wuwu virus pandemic. How do they get away with it?

Easy, barely an inconvenience.
Posted by: BurtTC at May 23, 2020 02:47 PM (hku12)

I guess I'm back here...

Right, there's a definite need to refine one's perspective here, to avoid both the appearance of, and the actual treatment of this viral outbreak as something less than what it is.

It's bad enough.

And separately from that, the government response has been dangerously sinister, and we'll likely spend years unraveling all the bullship that's been attached to it. Without any real satisfactory answers.

Yep, as I've mentioned here before, there's a book out there that makes a credible enough case that it was the Secret Service agent in the car behind Kennedy's, brandishing his AR15, who accidentally blew off the right front top of Kennedy's head.

Whether that's correct or not, we'll never know, but what we all SHOULD know is there's no way a 6.30 round from a Carcano rifle would have caused that effect. A top right front blowing off of the skull... from a solid slow, non-disintegrating type round from directly behind and above?

Makes absolutely no damn sense. Ballistics don't work that way.

504 At least got a new power line to heater spot, next would be drain old tank, will need to make new plumbing connections and should be fine.
