Pharmaceutical Company Moderna Reports Initial Success In the First Phase of Its Covid Vaccine Trial
Moderna's stock price jumped 40%. The DJIA jumped almost one thousand points.
The pharmaceutical company Moderna announced Monday that its vaccine, the first to be tested in people, appears to be safe and is stimulating an immune response against the novel virus. The trial's results are base around eight people who received doses of the virus beginning in March. The volunteers, who were healthy, produced antibodies that were determined to be effective in preventing the virus from replicating. The company will now proceed along an accelerated timetable by moving to immediately begin a second phase involving 600 people. The third trial will begin in July, and will involve thousands of healthy volunteers.

I never got the flu vaccine, 'cause it seemed pointless.
Since "2019 novel coronavirus" is actually nothing but this year's new flu variant -- something which happens every year -- I plan to not get this vaccine either. And I'm not even an anti-vaxxer. I just think it's unnecessary.

My history with vaccines is not good. I've always run a high fever after getting one. About a third of the time I ended up being laid up for an extended period of time. Once got a vaccine and had to go back to the doctor the next day. I had pneumonia. That was a month stuck at home.

Basically, for years they tested me to see if I was brian-damaged or becoming crippled. All the other (hundreds) of kids who had been given the experimental drug also had to show up for these "follow-up" tests. Over the years, we actually became friends just from meeting in the waiting room.

Not sure why. I haven't been able to get control of myself since I read the phase one opening here in MA. The governor didn;t open shit. Industrial and offices with reduced capacity. Next week parks and beaches but unlike VA and NC and Florida, it is still too cold to really go to the beach and its 2 hours away from me anyways.
I hate, hate what is happening. Every day that goes by is a lost day of my life. If we are really really good here, he might consider opening community pools in phase two but no idea when phase two might start. Phase 4 is vaccine.

That was odd, because the third group was the group that received the highest dose of the vaccine, and the only one that experienced any side effects.
But yeah, like many people here, I would not be rushing out to get any vaccine, especially for a virus that doesn't even make most people sick who get infected with it. The vast majority of the population faces no real risk from this virus. The risk from our idiot politicians, on the other hand, is much greater.

Also HCQ has been around for 50+ years and the side effects only manifest in very long term use... if ever.

Actually, it wasn't a vaccine -- just a new drug. Well, make that "drug." According to my mother, one day I started crying and wouldn't stop, and she couldn't figure out why. So she tok me to the doctor's office. He examined me, didn't even give a diagnosis, and promptly told my mother they had a new drug that would make me feel better, stop the crying. She shrugged, signed on the dotted line.
I didn't know about this until I was 18. I remembered going for the "follow-up" tests, which lasted until I was about 8, but I was never told WHY I had to take all these tests every now and then. I've tried for years to find out what the drug even was, since my mother doesn't remember and didn't keep any of the records from back then. I've narrowed it down to a few likely possibilities -- drug trials that were conducted that year. Both were totally infuriatingly unnecessary "drugs" -- similar to how they gave Thalidomide to pregnant women to ease their morning sickness. It didn't even work to stop morning sickness for most women, and yet it gave all their babies birth defects. HUGE side-effects for a drug meant to treat an extremely trivial problem.
I think the chemical I was given was basically just a sedative or knock-out drug that would "stop babies from crying" without even addressing whatever pain or discomfort was causing them to cry. And the "sedative" effect of the chemical was probably itself just a side-effect among many other more serious effects the chemical had on the human body.
Yeah, I hate all those doctors back then.

Remdesivir is NOT a vaccine
it's a treatment, given via IV, for very severe cases
really it fits with a treatment protocol plan - use HCQ/zinc/arythromicin for early treatment, if things go badly or the person is already far along, use the remdesivir
I don't see a problem with this.
the newly announced vax from Moderna looks pretty solid. it's not attenuated virus which is a good thing. it's a real vaccine.
so we'll see but I am feeling positive about it, and there are others in the pipeline

Drug testing in general is somewhat problematic. The safety studies are mostly short term. They do easily capture long-term, low incidence side effects. And they test generally with healthy, young volunteers when they get to human testing.
If it doesn't seem to harm or kill animals close enough to humans, they go to human testing. Occasionally something bad happens, when the new drug doesn't hurt the animals, but has some very specific effect on humans. I remember reading about one of those where the test subjects had severe reactions, some died and others where fucked up for life.
They don't test on elderly, sicker people, the ones who will take most of the drugs most likely, and they're finding that the elderly have significantly different responses to drugs that healthy young people.
Anyway, the bottom line for me is I won't take any drug unless it's been on the market for about 10 years. That's about the time period required for any long term problems to show up and be quantified.
Barring something severe of course, where I might die and some new drug could help. Risk vs. beneift.

anyway so yeah no zinc in Zicam anymore
I just get supplements BUT I do save those old swabs for real colds - stops EVERYTHING if you use them for like a day when you feel symptoms starting. it's freaking MAGIC.

Was at Target earlier, normal crowds, only about 1/5th wearing masks, although people were still distancing.
Was funny as it is right next to Walmart, where everyone HAS to wear masks, and there is a long line to even get in.

I have had shingles maybe 5 times so far. Even got the vaccine.
But I'm not normal, because of rheumatoid arthritis and the immune suppressing drugs I take. Rheumy took me off them for a month to get the vaccine, then had to wait another month before starting up.
Didn't do squat. That little zoster virus like to hang in the nerves in my forehead. It will pop up. My docs have me stocked up with acyclovir.

I've heard doctors going either way on this. I think it's still in debate as to whether or not the shingles vaccine is helpful or hurtful. WRT flu, tetanus, diptheria and whatnot, I'm all in. Shingles no. Not yet anyway. Still too much risk of downside with complications and questionable effectiveness. I was surprised to hear that, but that's been my experience.

Shingles really sucks, I had it in my 40s. However, unless this stuff is shown to have no serious side effects and really work, I'd wait on that. They won't kill you, they just are miserable for a while.

I was just on Ken Osmond's wikipedia page and he was a cop for years after he was done with Hollywood, and was shot five times during a foot chase. Four of them into his body armor, one off his belt buckle. It wasn't clear from the bad writing, but it sounds like he was wounded, but the body armor and belt buckle saved his life.

I was briefly a member of mensa, because one of my professors was pushing it, on me and a hot chick who was in the same class, and he had parties, and I think I did her in half the rooms of his house.

Well, I was a blue-collar kid, with a large Catholic family and very little money to spread around at any time and only remained a member through the free trial period.
But MENSA really has a way of making you not want to continue if you're a non-elitist.

I had shingles a few years ago. I was concerned because it was close to my eye, but it wasn't painful at all. Just slightly itchy. I knew a few people who had agonizing experiences with it.

She also completely believed in astrology (not only had her complete chart drawn up and posted in her kitchen, but would call her astrologer to see if she should do certain things at certain times. "I can't take a trip because Mercury in retrograde" crap like that.)
She made me think that being in MENSA was not worth a bucket of warm spit.
