Gallup: Trump Approval Rating Higher Than Four of the Last Six Presidents, Including Bush and Obama

This can't just be an outlier poll at this point.

At 49%, Trump is a hair away from the generally accepted 50%-51% approval political experts consider a lock to win reelection. Both Obama and Bush were at 50% approval on their reelection days.

At this stage of their presidencies, Obama was at 47% approval, and Bush was at 46% approval. Also, at this stage of their presidencies and heading into the reelection, Bill Clinton was at 55% approval, George H.W. Bush at 40%, Ronald Reagan at 52%, and Jimmy Carter at 38%.

CNN also found that Trump's approval rating was at the highest levels they'd ever found -- from the moment of his inauguration -- but chose, for reasons no one can even guess at, to completely hide that finding from the public.

The CNN poll found that Biden was ahead of Trump nationally 51-46, which, you know, who cares. But meanwhile Trump was even further ahead of Biden in the swing states which will actually decide the election, 52-45.

In the new poll, 51% of registered voters nationwide back Biden, while 46% say they prefer Trump, while in the battlegrounds, 52% favor Trump and 45% Biden.

63 The CNN poll found that Biden was ahead of Trump nationally 51-46, which, you know, who cares.

First off, I assume poll results are massaged more than Kobe beef, with the intention of shaping opinion, not measuring it.

That having been said, you'd think CNN et al. would cause their poll results to reflect recent events a bit, so that they at least had some appearance of validity.

So, for example, when Biden screws the pooch so laughably in his virtual town hall, knock down his poll results a few points, then if he does something well, bump them up a few points.

But as it is, Biden comes on camera forgetting to wear pants, bumbles his way through word salad, technical screw ups abound, and that doesn't have a scintilla of impact on his poll numbers.

C'mon, CNN. At least TRY to make these results look potentially believeable.

94 At 49%, Trump is a hair away from the generally accepted 50%-51% approval political experts consider a lock to win reelection. Both Obama and Bush were at 50% approval on their reelection days.

This is such a dumb line. Even if it were significant, his approval rating could be 79% right now, but drop before the election. Or be 2% now and skyrocket before the election. Its like deciding the world series based on the standings in May.

The Mariners are a lock for the win, because they have a 66% win percentage on May 18, and every team that has won the world series had at least a 66% win percentage at the end of the season!!!

97 My neighborhood is all I need to know about how Biden will lose this election.

I live in what is basically a solid-blue 100% Democratic voter zone.

In 2008, literally EVERY SINGLE car and house had "Obama" stickers and signs.

Same in 2012.

Then in 2016, at first everyone had "Bernie" stickers and signs, then half of them switched to "Hillary." But still, everyone had either a Bernie or a Hillary sticker.

This year? Most cars are STILL sporting their old 2016 Hillary stickers. Some updated with Bernie 2020 stickers.

After he dropped out, I saw a smattering of "Mayor Pete" and "Warren" stickers.

Most of those have now been scraped off, though.

But to this day, do you know what I never seen even ONE of?

A Biden sticker or sign.

Not a single one.

The enthusiasm level for him around here in the Democratic base is basically at zero.

I'm sure they'll all ultimately vote for him, but only as an anti=Trump gesture. NO ONE cares about or likes Biden.

This can't just be an outlier poll at this point.

------

As always:

The media polls are propaganda.

The media polls are also propaganda being produced by propagandists who are known liars.

Whether they're lying the numbers down or lying the numbers up, they're lying.

And they're lying on behalf of the State and the Party.

Please, I implore you people: stop listening.

In every historical instance, Marxist propaganda produced by State-controlled media becomes something self-perpetuating.

At a given point, when everything goes terribly wrong, we're expected to consume it because we must, and we do, but only because toilet paper is in short supply.

We're almost there. If we don't stop listening, we'll get there.

Please, stop listening.

And frankly, short of massive Demunist cheating, I wouldn't even be sure of THAT. This likely may be 2004 or 1988 all over again, maybe even 1984!

Even assuming the dumbing down and mass immigration racial polarization of the electorate over the last 30 odd years, Joe Biden makes Walter Mondale look good.

Faithful Democratic bastions will vote their hearts out because they run on the machine.

It's the people who don't really consider themselves Democrats (who vote Democrat in every election they vote in) but just kind of do it that are more important.

They're the suburban women vote. They're the Latino vote.

If they're not excited, then it's gonna cost them in some interesting places.

What we saw in CA-25 could end up being a precursor (though special elections are never predictive and they're not suddenly turning into predictive just because I want them to) of how suburban white woman are less engaged this cycle than they were in 2018.

Staying home matters in more than one way. Donald Trump can put whatever condition he wants on a rally- mask wear at all times, immediate ejection of coughers, only every other seat filled, etc- and still fill any seat he chooses to. Hell, people will show up just to be in the overflow.

But who's risking Corona for Joe fucking Biden? I don't think even his wife would, if she could excuse herself. So that's a major draw taken away from the Dems, no matter how many celebrities do free concerts to pull him over that line.

320 I think the "national lead" Biden has is clear reminder to all of the limits of surveys, at least of this kind. Funny, and ridiculous.

I don't think the much more useful polling done by the WH has been anything but very positive for some time, and explains the pre-C-19 focus on MN and even NM. They're looking at expanding the map, not defending it.

And the specific cases - MI, for example. A limp turn-out by Dems and Wayne County black voters, a plausible scenario at this point, vs. a super-charged "resistance" vote against the pathetic spectacle of their governor, will make the margin there much bigger than '16.

This is not how the hospitality business works, at all. Bars and restaurants always have an ebb and flow. They depend on morning, afternoon and evening crowds.

350 Anger Management with Charlie Sheen was actually pretty damn funny. My husband and I didn't want to laugh, but we couldn't help it. The scenes where Charlie holds his anger management group in the prison were always gold. Especially "Wayne", the serial killer. That guy had great delivery.

Jordan (Charlie's fellow therapist, a hot blonde): Charlie's late for work. He says there was a bus accident and now he's stuck.
Wayne: Well, that's just inconsiderate. When I kill someone, nobody's late for work.
Jordan: (smiling nervously) Except the one guy.
Wayne: *beat* (cheerfully) I stand corrected.

Funny story: even left-leaning producer Larry Gelbart realized that using the character of Major Burns as a punching bag was getting stale. So he introduced the character of Major Winchester, who, while still a Conservative caricature, was treated sympathetically in many episodes, and above all, could give back as good as he got from the resident Leftists.

And it worked. The formerly tanking ratings of MASH spiked up again and the show lived on a few more years.

401 All this happy talk, but the real clear politics polls in the battleground states currently looks really bad. There is a lot of time between now and November, but if people think Trump can just coast to victory or doesn't have an uphill climb right now, they are fooling themselves. A combination of what will probably be at least 100K dead and an economic depression isn't going to help. No, its not Trump's fault, but a message of "look at all of these bad things, its the guy in charges fault" is a lot easier message to sell than "its a virus, there is a limit to what you can do to stop it, China didn't help by lying about it, and the CDC screwed up testing."

I remember all of this happy talk about polls with Romney. I hope Trump and his team isn't believing the happy talk, or else I see a Romney style disappointment on the horizon.

Yeah, I think its fear or at least, uncertainty and wanting to know the future. Same thing that drives people to get their palms read and all that crap in the past.

One big difference: we knew Mitt was a Milquetoast back then and that we would have to drag him across the finish line. (He has since revealed himself to be an utter dishonest weasel, but we did NOT know that back then).

No one serious is thinking that we have to drag Trump across the finish line this time. Nobody.

433 406 Ernest Borgnine:

I read his autobiography. It took me about 90 minutes. It was very good & had a number of funny stories.

His wife (one of them) was Ethel Merman, the biggest Broadway star of all time. When they traveled together, Ethel got pissed that everybody recognized Ernie from McHale's Navy, & completely ignored HER.

Borgnine's native language was Italian, btw. He was a CWO (going from memory) in the U.S. Navy.

443 And I really can't wrap my head around why anyone trusts a "weighted" poll.

It's like going into an Irish pub on a Saturday night, polling 50 people regarding their intention to be in Church the following morning.

Now, if say, 20 of the polled say "I'm actually protestant, so no, I won't be in your swine Catholic Church in ye marnin," and you decide 20 protestants in an Irish pub is too many, so you decide to knock 10 off that number.

So let's say of the 30 remaining, 20 say they'll be there.

Now you have 20 who say they'll attend, and 10 of the 20 protestants you polled, to go along with the 10 Catholics who said no.

You decide that means half the drunken sots will be in Church tomorrow!

And of course as we know, trusting the word of a drunken Irishman is a bad idea, so some who said they'd be there are probably going to be passed out in the gutter somewhere.

This is just cuckery. As an example, Pennsylvania had maybe three polls where Trump won, and many of the single digit lags were commissioned by the GOP. Wisconsin had Trump projected to win zero times since June. I can't believe there are people still stupid enough to take polls into serious consideration. I personally think they're being inflated to fuel a "Trump collapse" narrative later.

Nonetheless- the fundamentals are all going Trump's way. Dem elites will try their usual wizardry, but this isn't 2016. The country will be much more hostile to their usual bullshit.

Yes; It's poopy, alright. Polls are dumb if you don't know who paid for them and what was asked by whom?

And anyway, doesn't CO usually go D in the Pres. races?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at May 18, 2020 03:43 PM (+eVzC)

499 I fully expect that if Trump wins reelection, he'll win the popular vote too. Which will be hilarious to see.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 18, 2020 03:41 PM (KZzsI)

That would only happen if Democrats are too depressed to even get out of bed on election day---and THAT would only happen of polls showed Trump 60%-40%, and the media would NEVER report that.

500 As the economy improves into the summer so will Trumps numbers. This Corona lockdown bullshit is ending and we will soon seen unemployment rates falling bigly.

503 Burt

If you don't weight the poll (i.e., model it so that it bears some resemblance to the actual electorate), then it truly is garbage.
Posted by: mnw at May 18, 2020 03:36 PM (Cssks)

Right, so somebody other than the people who your polling decides what "bears some resemblance to the actual electorate."

It's bullship. It's all bullship, and it's always bullship.

Other than truly randomizing your sample, you're going to get garbage. Every time.

Like California, it used to be a reliably Republican state.

A combination of Mexicans and Californication has changed Colorado. It will also soon change Arizona, and probably Idaho.

People forget that Oregon used to be a reliably Republican state, too.

When Texas goes Democrat, the jig will be up. I hope I'm dead by then. Probably no more than 15 - 20 years.

Keyser may very well be a troll.

But saying that Trump's victory is faaaar from assured doesn't make you one.
I, for one, believe the margin of fraud may be insurmountable and that the exploitation of the corona hysteria to suppress rallies (and hide Biden) give the Dems a big break.
So sue me.

Things actually couldn't get much worse, but just getting a little better might not be enough.

But there is not as much voter enthusiasm for Biden right now as there is for Donald Trump.
And the more we see of Biden, the sillier it will be. Let's see what idiot manikin he chooses for VP; or Chris Dodd chooses.

Posted by: Bozo Conservative....outlaw in America at May 18, 2020 03:50 PM (vcOmj)

510 Yeah the unemployment numbers should go down very rapidly but a LOT of businesses have gone under and may not come back, ever. This is going to be a tough road to get out of.

514 Even if I have to drag my carcass a mile or so to place my vote for President Trump, thus it shall be. I will fight off the vultures and murder hornets with my bare hands to vote for this man.

I have NO idea what is going on in my area, as I quit paying attention a month ago to numbers and blah, blah, blah. I think things are fairly normalish and something went into effect over weekend. Hello? People were already doing things, I think. Hell if I know.

I am a homebody to begin with, so not much in life changed except groceries delivered, etc. I am lucky, or as the covid supplier country would say, "rucky." So far healthy, knock wood and Obarky's head.

I really think when the weather got warm and spring sprung, Americans, being Americans, said eff it. Done. Curve flat enough.

If you want to drive around with a mask, fine. If you tell me I need to wear a mask to get hair appts, fine, as I really want that hair appt.

If I get covid, whatever. Just checking in to say hello.

Trigger words are social distancing and flattening curve. Oh, and "we are all in this together" from the celebrities. Right. Shut up. I don't even know who half of these twits are. And the hospital tic toc crap JUST LIKE HOST COUNTRY OF CORVID dancing. Right. They are dancing as they have nothing to fekin' do and no patients. Some states have been played, big time. Lookin at you, NY. Guvnuh saving his mother and killing peasant's. His face creeps me out. He looks pre-embalmed. I have not listened to his voice, just so you know. Treat him like Obungo (who looks like he has also been pre-embalmed or a zombie Uncle Ben's Wild Rice).

I'd like to flatten Dims at this point with a steam roller machine. I'd wear a mask to do job and only flatten those who look like Karen's or one of those hideous people who are the health and wellness czars of Dim states. gak. That zombie woman nearly finished me off. I also like the rotund czar of Belgium, who needs to lay off the waffles, hon.

Oh, I HATE the now covid commercials, all whiney with sad music, on tv when I watch recorded shows. How twee. Bite moi. No way am I getting a vaccine from that Gate's guy. Jerkface.
