Media Offers No Apologies As Georgia -- Which They Scolded for Practicing "Human Sacrifice" in Reopening -- Posts Lowest COVID Numbers In a Month

Matt Taibbi has a good piece about the "liberal" drive for Chinese-style authoritarian censorship to make certain only the "experts" have the right to speak publicly.

The tone of the many media reactions to Erickson, Carlson, Trump, Georgia governor Brian Kemp, and others who've suggested lockdowns and strict shelter-in-place laws are either unnecessary or do more harm than good, fits with what writer Thomas Frank describes as a new "Utopia of Scolding":

Who needs to win elections when you can personally reestablish the social order every day on Twitter and Facebook? When you can scold, and scold, and scold. That's their future, and it’s a satisfying one: a finger wagging in some vulgar proletarian's face, forever.

In the Trump years the sector of society we used to describe as liberal America became a giant finger-wagging machine. The news media, academia, the Democratic Party, show-business celebrities and masses of blue-checked Twitter virtuosos became a kind of umbrella agreement society, united by loathing of Trump and fury toward anyone who dissented with their preoccupations.

Because this Conventional Wisdom viewed itself as being solely concerned with the Only Important Thing, i.e. removing Trump, there was no longer any legitimate excuse for disagreeing with its takes on Russia, Julian Assange, Jill Stein, Joe Rogan, the 25th amendment, Ukraine, the use of the word "treason," the removal of Alex Jones, the movie Joker, or whatever else happened to be the #Resistance fixation of the day.

When the Covid-19 crisis struck, the scolding utopia was no longer abstraction. The dream was reality! Pure communism had arrived! Failure to take elite advice was no longer just a deplorable faux pas. Not heeding experts was now murder. It could not be tolerated. Media coverage quickly became a single, floridly-written tirade against "expertise-deniers." For instance, the Atlantic headline on Kemp's decision to end some shutdowns was, "Georgia's Experiment in Human Sacrifice."

At the outset of the crisis, America's biggest internet platforms -- Facebook, Twitter, Google, LinkedIn, and Reddit -- took an unprecedented step to combat "fraud and misinformation" by promising extensive cooperation in elevating "authoritative" news over less reputable sources.

...

We have a lot of dumb people in this country. But the difference between the stupidities cherished by the Idiocracy set ingesting fish cleaner, and the ones pushed in places like the Atlantic, is that the jackasses among the "expert" class compound their wrongness by being so sure of themselves that they force others to go along. In other words, to combat "ignorance," the scolders create a new and more virulent species of it: exclusive ignorance, forced ignorance, ignorance with staying power.

...

We've become incapable of talking calmly about possible solutions because we've lost the ability to decouple scientific or policy discussions, or simple issues of fact, from a political argument. Reporting on the Covid-19 crisis has become the latest in a line of moral manias with Donald Trump in the middle.

Instead of asking calmly if hydroxychloroquine works, or if the less restrictive Swedish crisis response has merit, or questioning why certain statistical assumptions about the seriousness of the crisis might have been off, we’re denouncing the questions themselves as infamous. Or we're politicizing the framing of stories in a way that signals to readers what their take should be before they even digest the material. "Conservative Americans see coronavirus hope in Progressive Sweden," reads a Politico headline, as if only conservatives should feel optimism in the possibility that a non-lockdown approach might have merit! Are we rooting for such an approach to not work?

To God's Ears:

But of course, this is always, and continues to be, about getting rid of Trump.

33 I've been trying to point out for months, look at Mexico. No distancing, no precautions, nothing much happened. A few got sick, a few died, just like every other flu year - so what.

This is why there's not going to be any "second wave" - outside of NYC, it's infected subway system and it's nursing home disease incubators, this entire thing has been a giant media fraud. Those who open fastest recover fastest, and there is NO "cost" to doing so. Just protect your damned nursing homes if you're worried about deaths.

Trump really can only work with the advice he's getting. Sure, he could have announced this is stupid, and stopped any shutdowns. Then it would have been 24/7 body count coverage. There would be a little number on your TV screen ticking away the deaths. Also, I think Trump figured at worst, a two to four week lockdown and not the madness you see now. So, he simply left it up to governors. Notice which ones are getting hammered.

The models were obvious crud because no virus has ever been that virulent.

But it seems like he now plans on keeping the state in this hobbled condition for many weeks. SMH for the FMN and millions of sheeple commiecrats who are cheering him for trying to kill off businesses.

willowed from previous thread -

wanted to say that the home workers in NYC might have done this, but not in PA. and we have been killing our nursing home residents just as dead

they drive themselves to work, in multiple homes, here in Pennsy

the plan was to force homes to accept COVID positive patients, to NOT TEST on purpose to expose the other patients, and to force COVID positive workers to report to work. this was AFTER we all knew very well that the elderly were the most at risk.

also, the little "League of Idiot Governors" (NJ, PA, NY, MA, CT) banned the use of HCQ/Zinc/arithromicin, just to seal the deadly deal.

It was done on purpose. They are evil.

if true, Birx is livid with the faux reporting out of the CDC

"During a task force meeting Wednesday, a heated discussion broke out between Deborah Birx, the physician who oversees the administration's coronavirus response, and Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Birx and others were frustrated with the CDC's antiquated system for tracking virus data, which they worried was inflating some statistics -- such as mortality rate and case count -- by as much as 25 percent, according to four people present for the discussion or later briefed on it. Two senior administration officials said the discussion was not heated," the newspaper reported.

"There is nothing from the CDC that I can trust," Birx reportedly said, according to two of the people.

"The flare-up came two days after it was reported that an internal government model, based on data from the CDC and other agencies, projected the daily death count would rise to 3,000 by June 1," the newspaper noted.

I think it depends on how you define virulent. If you're referring to how infectious it is, measles is spread more easily (has a higher R0). AFAIK, it was not suggested that Covid had a higher R0. If you mean lethality, that's clearly not so. See Ebola. Perhaps you meant a combination of the two?

I wouldn't, if I were them. Outside Chicago, even in the suburbs, quite a bit of Illinois is red. Not blood red like Indiana, but close. And by God would it be easy to convince them siege Chicago, or supply the military forces doing so. At least LA and NYC have ocean access. Yeah, MA mandated masks outside last week and at best, 50% are doing this. If you believe that, then I want some of what you are smoking.

He has deliberately mis-represented the facts and has possibly distorted the truth in respect to the source of the virus (Chinese Virology lab in Wuhan).
This virus is not a result of natural mutation that allowed it to jump species.
But Fauci as much as said that (it is natural). And he knows what is going on in that lab; he gave them (at least) $3.7 Mil from his budget. That is kind of small potatoes for running such an operation, but he does know what is going on there.
He demeans the effectiveness of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, but touts Remdisivir.
The trial for Remdisivir was a failure, but to hear him discuss it, it was a great success.

148 willowed from previous thread -

wanted to say that the home workers in NYC might have done this, but not in PA. and we have been killing our nursing home residents just as dead

they drive themselves to work, in multiple homes, here in Pennsy

the plan was to force homes to accept COVID positive patients, to NOT TEST on purpose to expose the other patients, and to force COVID positive workers to report to work. this was AFTER we all knew very well that the elderly were the most at risk.

also, the little "League of Idiot Governors" (NJ, PA, NY, MA, CT) banned the use of HCQ/Zinc/arithromicin, just to seal the deadly deal.

It was done on purpose. They are evil.

Meanwhile, a lot of my neighbors kids have been ignoring all the social distancing and other fear peddling they've been doing. These kids have done nothing but play, ride their ATV's and run around getting into mischief.

They always go to the weakest and most vulnerable. So the push is also to get seniors, most of whom are retired and therefore don't care of people ever go back to work, to do their bidding.

It's a real shitshow where liberals are trying to do their best to get the divisive forces working for them. Again.

these guvz are clearly misusing their powers against the will of the people and in a way that may permanently damage their working voters and the middle class and working class,

all because they had the misfortune to live in a blue state.

I was just noting that for a state that is not super populous, and likes to think of itself as a healthy, active, population we have had a lot of 'rona casualties. I don't know if its the light rail, the encouragement of homeless potheads, or sanctuary cities (and covertly sanctuary state) BS that bumped us up versus similar population and climate states.

219 >> I thought the MA rule was mandatory inside stores but if you could social distance not required outside?

OK, just checked - hoping I misunderstood, but:

Gov. Charlie Baker signed an executive order Friday requiring residents to wear masks in public, including people who take public transit and grocery shopping.

"We view this as common sense," said Baker, a Republican.

The executive order takes effect on May 6.
Masks and face coverings are mandatory in grocery stores, pharmacies and other retail shops, as well as on public transportation . . .

Face coverings are also mandatory out in parks and sidewalks, particularly in times and places where people have trouble staying at least 6 feet apart, according to the order.

Baker suggested, for example, that someone who goes out for a run at dawn likely won't need a mask because few people are around. Yet someone who goes out in the late afternoon and walks or runs in the company of others must wear a mask under the executive order because socially distancing will likely be impossible.

on paper ... yes. But when one early gov worker retired neighbor laughs that his neighbor (put out of business by shut down and having to fund six figure golden mafia pensions) is putting out his for sale sign ... the arrogant rich retiree may get more direct pain.

In time those that got gold pension by funding the Mafia that runs the state will (should be) seen as direct threats to America ... just as Nazis or other commies in the past. "Ha Ha, we used government to get eternal easy street, while you worked your ass off and still lost your business" ... met with a gun shot ... the shot heard round the world ... kill the Golden Boys (retired on six figures, paid for by bankrupting the proles) it is the only answer they will "listen to".

Baker suggested, for example, that someone who goes out for a run at dawn likely won't need a mask because few people are around

So, it's not mandatory if you can effectively social distance. At least that's the way I read it. I was walking at 2 pm yesterday and maybe 25% had masks on. Lots of people walking in small groups without masks.

300 There was a commercial on tv recently that horrified me. It said ( voice over) that Pres. Trump let the best economy of recent history turn into depression era unemployment because he acted too slow when confronted by the Chinese flu, and due to that, allowed so many people to die! Granted I live in Gretchen Witmer Michigan, but the commercial was disgusting even for the dnc. Add to that is that Obama minions have been calling into talk shows saying the economy , when it was good, was the Obama economy.

301 I've figured out my intrinsic, visceral reaction to all of these safety measures. Like, I'm inordinately furious that the Dallas salon owner (as an example) is talking about how it was okay for her to reopen because she was "taking all the precautions," like wearing a mask and gloves.

There is no freaking justification for these safety measures. I do not need to genuflect to some busybody's new idea of what is safe and socially acceptable. Screw all of that and screw all of those people. They were wrong. Their thoughts are wrong. Their actions are wrong. They are wrong and evil and I am not going to pretend that there is any underlying justification that makes them even minimally less wrong and evil.

This was 100% unnecessary, and I am not going to even fake that it was 5% necessary. I am sure as shooting not going to allow any of those people to order me to do anything, whether that's wearing a mask or staying 6 feet away or limiting where and when I go somewhere. No. Never. No.

In other words, to combat "ignorance," the scolders create a new and more virulent species of it: exclusive ignorance, forced ignorance, ignorance with staying power.
++++++++++++++
This is it, in a nutshell.

Regardless of what bent of authoritarianism the enemy prefers, the means are always the same. They may differ in goals (the folks at the Atlantic want communism. The NT former right want neocon big statism + foreign adventurism with a dash of "professional" policy making by their preferred and credentialed policy makers. The environmentalists - at least those that aren't communism - are pagan establishmentarians.

But whatever their cause or dreamed-of endpoint, the means are the same in all cases: technocracy.

All technocrats, whatever their mission, have the same motto: "Shut up you doofus! You are not an expert. We must listen to the experts and do as they command. If they are wrong, we don't acknowledge it. If they are right, we celebrate it. But always, we do as we are told by those masters of knowledge."

Pandemic pushed everyone into a state of fear, a real fight or flight mental and physical state, that has altered the citizenry, and opened their minds to insertion of State Dogma (if not insertion of some needle and/or tracking device on your phone, or in your body.

Next, they will Track You ... one person tests positive (mandatory testing) ... then they are required to tell every place/person they have been close to .. then ALL those people can be forcibly Quarantined.

..and somewhere before that gets underway ... death of our inquisitors will hopefully vastly outnumber death by virus. Live Free of or Die ...because somehow I think those forced into quarantine will be given the virus ... the Tyrants are loving this ... they need to be made less comfortable.

348 Official lockdown efforts were doomed the minute Americans realized that Cinco de Mayo fell on Taco Tuesday. God Bless Mexamurica. For the first time in weeks, the crowds came out, and there were lines down the block at every Mexican takeout place in town last week, few masks, no social distancing. That sort of woke everyone up from the lockdown spell, seeing so many others out in public who were obviously not sick or dying. This past weekend, I saw many small gatherings on porches and at parks, groups of twenty or more here and there. No matter what the state tries to do at this point, I think people are ready for summer and most are willing to accept whatever risks may accompany a return to normalcy -- whether those risks are from the virus or from government stooges attempting to enforce their diktats. It's like an inverse Chip Diller from Animal House, the crowd is rushing past him laughing and partying, while he stands amidst the chaos screaming "ALL IS NOT WELL!!!! BE AFRAID!!! The FBI agents themselves admitted, in writing in their own case notes, that they knew Flynn (1) had not committed any crime and (2) that they were going to try and set Flynn up in an interview. An interview conducted on the sly, without giving Flynn a lawyer or notifying the WH Counsel's office (which was the protocol).

Then, after Flynn did not fall for the trap and did not lie to them, they still went ahead and concocted a bullshit process crime, and they pretty much bankrupted Flynn with legal fees and threatened Flynn's son with yet another bullshit prosecution, all in an attempt to coerce Flynn into a guilty plea. And then the prosecutor lied for years that he had turned over all the Brady materials to Flynn's lawyers (when he had not), and even perjured himself to the court, by lying about there not being a side deal about Flynn's son.

But somehow Barr, by asking the court to dismiss this totally bullshit, obviously political and grossly improper prosecution, is the bad guy in this?

Any DOJ employee, present or former, who would sign their name to that letter is clearly a blithering idiot who has no understanding whatsoever of the meaning of the concept "rule of law." They should be disbarred.

I am firmly of the belief that F Chuck did not even view the entirety of the Barr interview before playing the clip and opining/lying. The clip that he was given by a staffer or producer fit his already pre-conceived notions to such a "T" that it never occurred to him that there was more to put the answer in context. Only a full on-air apology from him to AG Barr is acceptable. I think most of the on air "talent" play clips of unwatched interviews and pressers all the time. They know nothing and want to know nothing.

Some of them will survive, but none of them will come out of this
unscathed. And they will never have the same number of passengers as
they had before this started. Way too many people will not book cruises
now due to fear.

Sort of my thinking. There will still be cruises, but the numbers are probably going to go down for a bit.

On the flip side, I'm guessing the correlation between pro-lockdown and cruise ship goers is fairly small, so who knows.

If that industry does die, then those vacation dollars will be spent elsewhere. So while the industry may suffer, it will not have as damaging an effect on the economy as other losses might.

416 I live in metro Atlanta, practically on the border of two of the most densely populated (around 2,600 per square mile) counties in Georgia. Total population of the two counties is right at 1.7 million. (Georgia counties are tiny. Think townships, and multiply the area by 2).

The county I live in is probably THE most diverse (right around 25% each of black, white, Asian and Hispanic, with a bunch of former Yugoslavians included among white and first-generation Africans among the black) in the whole damn country.

The adherence rate to COVID-prophylactic measures here is spotty, maybe 40% masks, though people have observed distance etiquette to the extent possible on my usual sorties to the convenience store, grocery and Home Depot. (Interestingly, the mask-wearing adherence among Hispanics and Asians is about 10% and absolutely 100%, respectively -- I haven't seen a presumably pretty Asian girl's whole face since early March; that's how I know. Blacks and whites are pretty much equally 40-40.)

The home-sheltering here has been relatively lax. The trough of apparent activity was right at the turn of the month, but as soon as the weather got nice -- and it's been friggin NICE the last few weeks -- people have been out. At the parks, in their yards, frequenting exempt businesses.

In other words, I can't think of a more representative research base for serology testing than the place where I live. lf there's a place where this virus should be running wild, it's right here.

As of today, in these two counties, we have right at 5,000 *reported* cases,

YMMV.

Most of the studies I have read out of the US indicate that it was being tried once you were already down hard or in the ICU (late stage) and it doesn't show a lot of promise if you're already at death's door. Those doctors that prescribe to anyone in a risk group the moment they get the sniffles - even before the test results come back - have had better results.

HCQ+Zinc seems very much to be a "hit it hard early" solution, not a "pull you back from the brink" solution.

Scam or not, the question should be what will a " vaccine " accomplish. If you use influenza as a base model, a covid vaccine will take that rough probability of a 1.5/10k chance if death and lower it to a rough probability of 1/10k probability if death.

Every choice you make, has a cost. Even NOT making a choice, can have a cost.

Because everything we do or say has some consequence to it, good, or bad.

The Founders of this country KNEW that when Governments make choices, the PEOPLE pay the cost, so they decided to strictly limit what the Government could choose for the people.

They wanted the people who had to pay the cost, to be the ones who made the choice.

Thus, the Constitution, which has been explicitly ignored for the last 3 months.

US Constitution is done, because BOTH major parties supported the shut down by Executive order.

462 How to tell the difference between a blunder and malfeasance.

A person is walking down the street, stumbles into an old lady knocking
her down. Was it a blunder or malfeasance? If it was a blunder the
person will be confused, surprised, apologetic, and try making up for
their error. If it is malfeasance the person will have a plausible story
to tell you - it will place the blame everywhere but upon him -
somebody shoved him, there was a crack in the sidewalk etc. People who
do things deliberately always have their asses covered.

Greg Abbott
blundered in his response to the Whu Flu. In the case of Andrew Cuomo,
he is either a psychopathic serial killer, or he was trying to run up
the body count in nursing homes for political reasons, when he ordered
nursing homes to take Covid-19 patients; his actions were not blunders.

And I was just about to ask: do the Dems really think they're helping themselves in Nov. in WI/MI/PA with their current vandalism? They really think the "politics" of this at the presidential level are not on Trump's side (get back to work), but theirs?

Trump didn't win those states with the votes of brain-dead NPR listeners and Soviet-mentality drones who make up most of the Dems' non-racist/tribalist "base". Pension funds are fucked. CalPERs has been shitting the bed with the market crash.

These ridiculous public sector (and some private sector) "defined benefit" schemes depend on rosy economic growth and interest rate assumptions.

You take the present value of the stream of payments you're going to have make over the future, vs the present value of the income you're going to make to pay for it.

They make all sorts of ridiculous assumptions on the latter to keep the amounts they have to pay in as low as possible

And low interest rates kill them as well. The Fed is locked in a box and must keep interest rates low less it blow up the federal govt. Debt held by the public to GDP is going to blow past 100% this year.

It could be a lot of ongoing charges and not new sales, if they're counting dollars rather than cars.
