The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

MAskedPunkMonkey.jpg
[Courtesy of Mindful Webworker]

Scary Headline? Check.
Throwaway quotations and deceptive facts? Check.
Vital bit of information tacked on at the end of the article? Check.

So; business as usual for our brave and intrepid journalists and editors, who can't seem to think for themselves and always default to hysterical redirection of the topic toward a "WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!" theme. Obviously they embrace the maxim, "If it bleeds, it leads," but it's worse than that. They seem to be so intellectually lazy, and ignorant of everything outside of their little world of Twitter snippets and 10 second attention span news that they cannot synthesize information. It must be an odd life, with disconnected bits of information rattling around in their mostly empty heads, without the intellectual heft to connect them.

Kidney injury seen in more than a third of hospitalized COVID-19 patients -U.S. study

Over a third of patients treated for COVID-19 in a large New York medical system developed acute kidney injury, and nearly 15% required dialysis, U.S. researchers reported on Thursday.
.
.
.
Very ill patients often develop kidney failure as their conditions becomes more and more severe, Jhaveri said.

"It's not specific to COVID-19. It's more related to how sick you are," he said.

It took the writer most of the article to arrive at the fact that when people get really sick from Wuhan flu, they um...get really sick, and have things go wrong with them like other really sick people.

And there's more! The writer seems to be playing fast and loose with the phrases "acute kidney injury" and "kidney failure." Is that because it would be more difficult to paint a gloomy and scary picture if she pointed out that only one in seven patients needed dialysis (in itself a scary word)? Or that the data on permanent injury was lacking, because maybe these kidney complications were temporary?

Who knows? Certainly nobody who read the article is any wiser. It speaks to the complete abrogation of the concept of a responsible press. Provide the facts, let us draw conclusions, and do not manipulate those facts in service of a political agenda.

Sounds simple!

imo it is not axiomatic that ChinaVirus deaths will spike after each
stage of opening ... because the decline is in motion, many already
exposed (especially nursing homes and crowded places), weather is warmer
(likely a factor) -- AND people are more aware and cautious.

AND
not everyone will jam back into crowded spaces ... if they never shut
down subways in the hottest of hot spots, how can they claim the right
by XO to destroy a business and quarantine whole states? The Wisconsin
court decision indicates such powers are not universal, and cannot be
"arbitrary and capricious" (as they seem to be).

We need more
decisions like Wisconsin, and I guess Trump is stuck with being a
cheerleader for opening. Real Stats are also needed, not just the
Gates/Fauci/Birx contrived global warming style models (all fake with a
political/globalist agenda).

I couldn't be bothered to see if the actual numbers were 1 kid last week in London, 30 kids this week in the entire UK because I've learned when they give you real numbers, they don't want you to look at what that means as an overall percentage, and when they give you percentages, they don't want you to look at the numbers they used to get them.

50 Yes, dialysis is a scary word. Still, my neighbor is a Type I diabetic, and as his years advanced, so did the ravages of the disease: insulin does not solve everything. Anyway, he was on the wait-list for a kidney transplant, and it took a loo-o-oong time. Praise God he received the transplant, but in the months leading up to it he was on home dialysis.

Yes, you can do dialysis in the comfort of your home. Mind you, it's a serious undertaking, and the poor guy was fighting infections around the tube for a lot of it, but it can be self-administered at home.

Gravely serious, but maybe not so scary after all?

I am glad that the governor of a state is such a paragon of self-control. He won't be able to resist the fire within that makes him shake hands and hug.

Or how about this? Shake hands. Hug if the other person is down with that. Then give a quick statement on how life goes on and we just need to be careful. Then give a brief demonstration on the proper use of hand sanitizer. He can do the whole thing while wearing a mask if he wants. Then provide another statement, this time an overview on reopening.

He's a democrat. He would seal his re-election and become a national hero by doing something like this.

But no. Instead, blame his friendly lack of impulse control and keep on tyranting.

65 A diagnosis of Kidney failure is not necessarily the end.

It's a declaration of how well you're kidneys are operating according to the research and experience.

I was diagnosed with 3rd stage (doesn't require dialysis) and have slowly recovered to well above that. But that won't remove the diagnosis from my medical chart. And that's another thing about being diagnosed these days with something. They won't ever let it go and will always be apart of your current history. You might not exhibit the symptoms anymore or be at hazard but the least sort of indications it will be used as a reason or an excuse.

Remember, Doctors don't get paid for cured patients.

I used to smoke. Been 22 years now. If I have any signs of lung disorder I can guarantee they'll note: "Caused by previous smoking" and if I die because of that it will be recorded as a smoking related death.

That the Drs. and Health Centers are fiddling the with Covid stats is nothing new. They do that stuff all the time so as to advance whatever particular disorder is the current fav.

And that also applies to all these "underlying diseases" catch all they're using for an explanation why older people are affected more by Covid while younger are not.

It's been bandied around that having been vaccinated for flu might make a covid infection worse or able to take hold.

And that too might explain why older people who've had more vaccinations and more exposure might have a weakness for covid virii.

Well vaccination or not, just staying clear of groups of people, washing your hands and generally watching where and who you're around are good ideas anyway.

70 I've honestly never liked Alexander Hamilton. He did do a lot for America's early finances, but he was more concerned with centralizing power in the federal government than liberty.

I still think the states should have maintained their own debts from the Revolution instead of the federal government taking them on. It did have the effect of giving America a quick line to credit, but there were other ways to do that that were less damaging to those states that had been paying off their debts well and less generous to those that hadn't (like New York, Hamilton's state).

I really wish Washington had kept Hamilton at arms length during his administration.

78 Pritzker quote "Counties that try to reopen in defiance may not be reimbursed by FEMA
for damages they cause, because they ignored the law," he said. "Local
law enforcement and the Illinois State Police can and will take action.
But there is no consequence the state could impose that is greater than
the harm that you will do to your own communities."

imo that last sentence is a BigAssLie. there is no evidence that opening does more harm to a community than not opening. In fact, I think Not Opening is the greatest threat. Opening with a few safety measures does the Least Harm.

That is why I think Pritzker's (harshest in the nation?) executive order (not Law?) is arbitrary and capricious, and unconstitutional. A 30 day state of emergency is one thing, and sure he has "experts" that will back up anything, but without that famous "peer review" he is doing vast irreversible damage to a healthy population. Well, yes. They are probably doing something right (hard to get customers otherwise) but going from $10k in gross sales in January to $1m in gross sales at the end of the year is a 100x increase. Pretty fast growth, even on small overall sales.

I'd love to see the internals. I started tracking Colorado's public data and noticed something funny. The number of deaths on virtually every single day since mid-March go up every week. Last week, the deaths on April 12 might have been "X" but today they are "Y." Some new reports floating in? Maybe. that would be the reasonable assumption and it might be true. But reporting delays are tiny right now and everything is focused like a laser on COVID. Where the hell do all of these new deaths keep coming from?

(CO is still flatlining on deaths and hospitalizations, but the past figures keep growing).

147 Let's face it. Government holds the reins on every eating and drinking kind of establishment because of licensing and health inspections.

As we have seen in the news, owners of these joints have no way to go rogue and open, because the Stazis march in with threats to close because they hold these reins. And it works.

So while we might see some manufacturing and retail places go rogue and open, gaining some jobs back, eating and drinking in !Resist! Dem strongholds like Austin, Dane county WI, and the like, have no chance.

Then there are financial services like banks, brokerages, wealth management, credit unions, and the like, all of them way too corporate to go against the grain. They have their finger in the breeze, and believe the polling that "it's just too soon." So they won't open up.

Not sure of the age of those 6, but willing to be $5 they were over 70.

Comparable numbers for homicides, auto accident fatalities, opiod abuse-related fatalities, suicides - unavailable. Not to mention influenza deaths.

151 That is why I think Pritzker's (harshest in the

unconstitutional. A 30 day state of emergency is one thing, and sure he
has "experts" that will back up anything, but without that famous "peer
review" he is doing vast irreversible damage to a healthy population. A
vast Lock Down kills people ...

I'm struck by the extent to which various right-wing "patriots" both
reject shelter-in-place and reject masks. So, what are they doing for
the country they say they love? The Founders would be stunned at their
callous disregard for a pandemic.

I am struck by the moronic ignorance of people who fail to see the corpses piled in the streets as predicted and yet cling to the idea that the masks they were originally told "won't protect you" will not protect you, and continue to cling to the idea this is an apocalyptic pandemic on the level of the Spanish Flu or the Bubonic Plague.

156 If your body builds up fluid in reaction to the virus, don't your kidneys have to work harder? Isn't that how it works?
Posted by: BignJames

********

Not exactly. In the critically ill setting, the term "acute renal failure" signifies that the kidneys are not able to filter enough blood to maintain internal equilibrium (aka homeostasis). This is more likely due to decreased blood flow to the kidneys (see also 'glomerular filtration rate'). Factors that lead to that in a critical infectious disease setting include dehydration, low blood pressure, shock.

One of the key parameters we monitor in critically ill infants is urine output (the amount of urine actually produced), as a marker of renal blood flow (or end-organ perfusion).

Acute renal failure is not equivalent to kidney 'damagee'.

177 I didn't see until too late the roasting I got on the ONT. I'll reply here, as CBD was the only one who made even a gesture at a reply. And that was weak. "You don't like our definitions" is a postmodernist response, essentially that of Humpty Dumpty "When I use a word it means exactly what I want it to mean, no more and no less."

The fact is that that view makes a mockery of the the claims of Natural Law, and wholly ignores such sources of conservative thought as Kirk and Weaver.

Still, it was something. The rest were EXACT repetitions of what I got in the comments at NRO when I made the same kind of point. And that was actually much of what I'd written.

I was right then. I fear I am right now. The simple fact is that most of the value I get here is from links, not original content. And it didn't used to be like that.

(I actually gave up on NRO after a column by Williamson - not the infamous one - in which he dishonestly redefined "classical liberalism" as being the sole essence of conservatism. In the process he ripped off Russell Kirk in making a case Kirk had repudiated. I fear a repeat here. But then, I am Eeyore. I hope I'm wrong.)

as Mannix said, is that just from more testing? idk.

But one theory is healthy people get it and don't notice, but being locked down they are quarantined with more vulnerable parents or others. Since "continuous" and/or close exposure is how it is more likely spread ... the quarantine isolates people together .. if one in the family gets it, the others are going to get it (and that has been the case).

I still advocate giving it in controlled fashion to all healthy people that don't live with very vulnerable people. Give a small dose (a shot, or whatever method) ... do this in groups by alphabet or some such (A-F one week, and so on) ... then herd immunity in a month, no extra life lost.

Risk of virus has to be weighed against DEATH by LOCK DOWN (and by political malice intended to impose communism via Never Let a Crisis Go to Waste, Create Crises as Necessary ... BAMN). Viewed as a blitzkrieg to stop Trump and impose communism, the Fauci Farce of Manipulated Models is very successful ... for our enemy.

A "pandemic" refers to the extent of spread, not its severity. But when the panic-mongers (in service of the Panoptican and All Controlling Nanny State) want to gin up their panic, out comes the "pandemic" word, which by its apocolyptic sound is meant to close down all debate about reasonable policy tradeoffs: like whether to perfectly control problem "A" is worth screwing every pooch "B" through "Z."

=====

The historical illiteracy or deliberate obtuseness of these people is astounding.

Do they realize there were a panoply of diseases, sicknesses and ailments at the time of the founding. We had no vaccines for anything, no treatments for much of anything. Life was a huge risk at that time and before and long after. They were always at risk of illnesses that we today haven't even seen because we've since eradicated them. Hell, even the water couldn't be trusted.

Yet, they survived and built the most fantastic nation this world has ever seen. They weren't cowering in fear in their homes. They lived life because that's all you can do. They weren't walking around swaddled in masks.

I'm damn sick and tired of the invocation of the founders. It's another form of manipulation.

222 Because here in CO, deaths and hospitalizations have crashed. Cases keep on climbing, though. Why, that couldn't be because of full-tilt testing finding a lot of it despite the decline in sick people, could it?

**********

A month ago CO was reporting in the range of 1500 to 2000 test results a day, with roughly one positive test out of every four tests.

This past week (by comparison)- they are reporting between 2500 and 4500 test results a day with roughly one positive test for every 10 tests.

In spite of the doubling of tests run, the daily new case numbers are either holding steady or slowly declining.

Fred Fleitz says he believes Samantha Power when she says she did no unmasking, and I hate to say it, but I agree.

HOWEVER -- someone made unmasking requests in her name, which can't be legit? So she must be unintentionally getting that person thrown under the bus, as that person will themselves be found out if there's ANY mechanism for doing so.

I wonder if anyone's getting to her and telling her to quit denying shyt and just say "no comment."

259 I think we really need to get the government out of the business of deciding what is risky. Let people make their own decisions on that. If you set aside how deadly the Wuflu is and judge riskiness on the same basis you'd use with the flu, you would be fine.

We should have data on whether or not people are getting infected from packaging. We should have an idea if someone is at risk getting a haircut or a manicure. If we don't have any info in this country, we can certainly get it from other countries. I've seen no evidence that you are more likely to get infected if you go camping at night or if you lie on a beach during the day. Yet we have allowed governments to make those decisions based on what they chose to do.

269 apologize if this was already covered : "Mouthwash has the potential to protect against COVID-19 infection by killing the coronavirus before it can infect human cells, according to a new report.

Coronaviruses belong to the class of 'enveloped viruses', meaning they are covered by a fatty layer that is vulnerable to certain chemicals.

A team of international researchers say mouthwash could destroy the outermost layer or 'envelope' of the virus, preventing its replication in the mouth and throat.

The scientists say there is an urgent need to test the effectiveness of mouthwash in trials, although there is currently no clinical evidence that it would be successful. "

There is more, but WHO is has on its website (from Feb) that there is no evidence that using mouth wash will protect against covid.

298 apologize if this was already covered : "Mouthwash has the potential to protect against COVID-19 infection by killing the coronavirus before it can infect human cells, according to a new report.

So there you have it.

Used to be a place near my office that served food without a license. Run by a couple black ladies and their families. Cash only. Lunch only. Food was whatever they'd felt like cooking that day. Always a huge line. Sadly, their house burned down and they didn't re-open.

The scientists say there is an urgent need to test the effectiveness

374 How bad are Democrats? The only way to view them is as if they were looking at you and saying, "I want to take your kid, I want to rape your kid, and then I want to kill your kid." You see, it is not enough for you to understand that they merely want to kill you and take your stuff. You MUS understand their absolute depravity. Once you start viewing them with that disgust, only then will you realize the overall desire of the Democrat Party and the Deep State. 100 million people did not understand the depravity of the Deep State until too late.

Don't worry - she's as pernicious and unfit to be near any responsible job as all of the Obama-year lightweight non-entities - but easy to see her being a dim tool for this particular bit of rule-breaking.

I imagine we'll be finding out.

Haven't checked, but I imagine somehow falsely using credentials to make an unmasking request is big, big no-no, with actual penalties involved.

You can say the same of many many other diseases. COVID-19 doesn't have exclusive rights to kidneys.

445 My wife and I spent the first week in January in large crowds of people at a race weekend. Easily 100K people that we were in close proximity to throughout the 7 days. Many international people at the race too.

We both got sick afterwards. I was kind of a mild cold that was gone in 2 days. My wife was really sick for a week of more. About a week later our son also got really sick.

The symptoms all point to COVID, so we are completely convinced we caught it in January and recovered by the end of the month.

The only reason I am interested in testing is to find out if we have the antibodies or not. I'm curious.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Sadly, the contract for my book, The Spider, exposing Stefan Halper, was abruptly terminated by the publisher.

Halper objected to being described as a spy and a liar, and threatened unfounded legal action. /1

As a result of Halper's threats, the publisher wanted me to change facts and alter metadata. I refused to buckle to the pressure, as I will always tell the Truth.

You deserve the whole Truth about Halper and his
role in spygate, and my book delivers it. /2

Unfortunately, Halper's interference forces to me to take legal action against him and others nvolved in the horrible decision to chill reporting on this matter of immense public concern.

The book is written, edited, and ready for publication. /3

This Deep State interference will not stop me from exposing Halper.

Stay tuned here for further announcements concerning

According to those channels, hydrocloronique is being used with HUGE SUCCESS throughout the world (both with z-pac & with zinc), but only in early stages -- once the disease progresses past a certain point, there is little effect.

What the US media and CDC/FDA are doing here is criminal and I can only assume it is to benefit Big Pharma with the added bonus of "getting Trump."

523 Probably too late for this thread, but I do wonder about how this works in corporate media. Seems to me there are lots and lots of these "little" stories that get filed by nobodies in the media. Individual reporters who write up their yellow journalism, and nobody really knows who they are.

Sure, we have the vapid talking heads on teevee, and there are the somewhat well known opinion writers at various publications.

But what about these reporters? They seem to me like worker bees, individually operating, and yet part of the hive. You could swat down one of them, but there are thousands more like them.

And they do swarm.

So how do we hold these reporters accountable, when clearly their publications and editors won't? Who is tracking the bullshit they spew, and holding their own words up to them?

534 Well, look at it this way. I am thinking that as red states open, and us purple states kinda sorta open and blue states stay locked down, more and more people in the blue states will get pissed off.

I am finding one thing both disheartening and hopeful - I know several Boomer Trump voters who have gone full Karen. They're as fearful as any lib. OTOH, I think the millennials - who have to earn a living and are healthy - are really getting sick of this shit. That's why, even though I take all polls with a bushel basket of salt, I wasn't surprised by the one that showed Trump's support was down among the elderly and up among younger people. It would be rich indeed if the generation that elected Obama ends up turning conservative - or at least libertarian - as a result of this.

Posted by: SGT Ted at May 14, 2020 01:20 PM (ZZdRX)

552 It is possible, but it is also possible that Covid is directly infecting the Kidneys. They are one of the organs that have ACE2 receptors, which are the receptors the virus uses to get into the cell. If the condition is bad, the virus may have the opportunity to go systemic and make its way down to the kidneys.

554 "Scientific" American pulled the same trick this week: a story about how all the people with the Wu Flu are getting Massive Blood Clots....
tons of gory descriptions, and photos...

but there was this line waaay down: "ANYONE with a severe illness is at risk of developing clots, but HOSPITALIZED cv19 patients APPEAR to be more susceptible."
Then, further down still, after the point where all the leftwing hysterics are having convulsions of fear and not reading anymore, there's this little nugget:
"But [Dr.] Lee adds that there could be other factors at [sic] play that Aren't specific to cv19.

"People with the disease who become hospitalized typically have a number of Risk Factors for clotting. They might be elderly or overweight, or could have high blood pressure or diabetes. They show up with high fevers and, because they're seriously ill, have probably been immobilized.
"They might have a genetic predisposition to clotting, or be taking medications that increase the risk. 'It's kind of like a perfect storm, she says."
IOW, they haven't really STUDIED this notional phenomenon, they're just giving us anecdotal [!] accounts, heavily hedged with so many disclaimers that the whole thing disappears up its own ass.
