The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

MAskedPunkMonkey.jpg
[Courtesy of Mindful Webworker]

Sometimes we just have to point and laugh and poke at people with sharp sticks when they are this stupid. This is functionally identical to burning witches and wearing onions on one's belt and running inside when the contrails appear and homeopathy and astrology and on and on...

5G coronavirus conspiracy theory results in 77 mobile towers burned, report says

If I weren't concerned that just being near someone who is this profoundly dumb would decrease my intellectual ability, I would love to ask about the specific mechanism of how a very low power radio signal will cause or exacerbate a viral disease.

It's like the small-"m"morons who think that cell phones cause cancer or that living near a cell tower causes health problems. The energy required to cause mutations (breaking bonds in genetic material) is fairly well known by chemists. And it's just a bit more than the tiny amounts that we absorb from cell phones and other electronics. Sure, there are other mechanisms that cause mutations, but in the grand scheme of things, worrying about this sort of stuff is just bonkers.

But this insanity is just the (hopefully) far right side of the curve. There are all sorts of other nutty ideas that are floating around much nearer to the middle of the bell curve that describes the human condition. Like Sino-Lung-Rot is going to kill 3,000,000 people in America! That lunacy was actually taken seriously by a whole bunch of people who should have known better!

It makes me quite sympathetic to this guy, who has some frustrations about working from home.

23 NBC - For many cautious African Americans, the move to reopen America is not a 'black friendly' campaign

For many black Americans, the general perception is that the throngs of white protesters are steeped in racism, white supremacy and anti-black sentiments. And so many black Americans would feel unwelcome -- and perhaps afraid -- given the presence of Confederate flags, swastikas and hangman's nooses.

Everything is racisty racism and complete lies comrades.

24 I think people overstate it but I do strongly believe that in coming years we're going to find out that living in this soup of radiation is bad for people, like we found out breathing coal smoke and smoking were bad for people after a while.

Its not crazy to say "hey, maybe constantly being bombarded with radio waves and signals from towers all around us all day might not be a good thing" Every year we add more and higher energy sources and to this constant exposure.

Doesn't mean it causes Wuhan Flu and that high tension powerline isn't giving you cancer, but maybe not so great, either.

Prove it, NBC.

We just came off of historically low black unemployment. Taking someone who has been out of work for a long time - or maybe has never worked regularly - then giving him the opportunity to work and earn some self-respect and a future and then furloughing him for what we now know was a massive overreaction and then refusing to let him go back to work because you're drunk on power is not a "black friendly" campaign.

Possibly, possibly, possibly.

I know everyone here wants to scream constantly that this virus is no big deal, but it IS incredibly contagious. 98% of the people who catch it have no to mild symptoms. It's the 2% of people who develop serious symptoms that need to worry.

Yesterday in an independent newspaper in Michigan was this article in which several of the MD's at Michigan's major hospitals that are treating Covid 19 patients were interviewed regarding the challenges and treatments being used. it's quite interesting. Blood clots are a major concern with this virus. Docs are finding that NOT using ventilators may save lives. HCQ is loved at one hospital and banned at another.

Anything bidirectional, though, is a big 10-NOPE. I don't want the state to have the power to target places for "no power" and "no water." Surely, they wouldn't abuse such power. Surely.

88 Its not crazy to say "hey, maybe constantly being bombarded with radio waves and signals from towers all around us all day might not be a good thing" Every year we add more and higher energy sources and to this constant exposure.

Reminiscent of Heinlein's story Waldo from 1941, although he was talking about broadcast power.

Huawei is building a weapon via 5G dominance, we know that. Is it feasible the vaccine has trackers in it and could also have some health related 5G wave damaging effect? I kinda doubt it ... but we need to stop much of the tracking anyway, imo.

A more real theory ... the "globalist" NWO plan is some global control (BiS, IMF?) of currencies, and probably a crypto currency that is trackable. Will they know your obesity score, and hence reject your next attempt to buy bacon? (but you will still be able to buy Coke, corporate approved junk food)

When I see one crazy conspiracy theory, I look at what the real conspiracy might be, that the crazy theory is floated out there to hide. There are real concerns about how the techno world is allowed to advance ... more control over the giants is the first step, and keeping them America based would be helpful (if we could just get the Resistance out of our government).

I know everyone here wants to scream constantly that this virus is no big deal, but it IS incredibly contagious. 98% of the people who catch it have no to mild symptoms. It's the 2% of people who develop serious symptoms that need to worry.

But don't panic. Studies, such as they are right now, point mainly to long term exposure; not passing exposure. If I were AOP, I'd Clorox/wipe down wherever his friend was and whatever he touched as best he can, (bathroom handles, door knobs, truck interior, etc) continue to wash his hands frequently, and not touch his eyes, nose or mouth, spend time in the sun and drink some ( good) whiskey.

Never mind the false choice ("lives or the DJIA"), it is good to know where Joe stands. Allow me to translate this for Joe:
"No risk is worth taking."

Just the kind of guy I want to be president. Is going toe-to-toe with China risky? Yes - so Joe won't do it. Is re-establishing deterrence risky? Hugely - so Joe won't do it. Is driving a car risky? Definitely - so Joe clearly wants to ban it.

There is risk in *all* human endeavor. Every single thing you do has risks. Some greater, some lesser, but it is always there. This position of "if it saves just one life" is profoundly anti-human. It isn't poetic, it isn't beautiful, it isn't just and it isn't kind. It's dehumanizing.

Honestly, the shutdown has been a blessing from a family standpoint for me, because all but one of my work servers are accessible from the hospital's network. One of them has it firewalled for some odd reason, but I use it relatively rarely, and there is another worker who can field those requests for me.

This makes it much, much easier for us to trade off between the hospital and home (baby had to come back same day she was discharged, and needs YET ANOTHER surgery, because of course she does, so I'm here again).

This would be next to impossible to handle if I were expected to be in the office.

I understand this is a relatively unique circumstance that applies to virtually nobody but me. But I'm grateful for it.

What I cannot forgive is that they are refusing to open back up with the new information we now have. The CDC could save face by saying the WHO misled them but now our own antibody testing shows the lung rot is not that bad except for the elderly so here are the new guidelines. But so far they refuse to so much as admit they were misled. Anybody can make a mistake but narcissist jerks who double down and insist it was not a mistake will be the end of our great nation.

I hitched myself pretty firmly to the "early ballots are predictive of election results" in 2018, and I got burned really badly. They weren't predictive in the least.

So, it's nice to see more Republicans casting early votes in a Democratic leaning district, but I'm not holding my breath, especially in California.

169 But in congruence, there may be some real shortages caused by absurd shut downs, idk.

Its hard for people living in cities to grok this but when farms have piles of food they have to let rot and millions of gallons of milk are being dumped out because they cannot sell it, that means food shortages.

See, when you force restaurants, casinos, cruise ships, and all the other venues which purchase large quantities of food to shut down, that means the people who supply these goods suddenly have tons of it but nowhere to sell it. And since local and federal laws and regulations ban selling locally... there's nowhere for all this to go.

208 Posted by: Jen the original at May 07, 2020 11:15 AM (fpTcW)

So how many people do you think have it or have had it? Because average of 25 million get the flu each year. Over 60 million were infected with the H1N1 in 2009 and 80% of the deaths were people under the age of 65.

Posted by: Kilroy wasn't here at May 07, 2020 11:28 AM (2DOZq)

I think there are an incredible number of people who have been infected with this. The reason we have so many infected here in the USA is because, IMO, we are doing way more testing than any other country.

Michigan right now is testing 11,000 people a day. There are "pop up" testing sites opening in which ANYONE can get a test, you don't need to get Rx. And since testing is free( not really, the Gov and insurance companies are forking out the money for it) I'm going to bet we are going to see increasing numbers every day of cases. 98% of which don't need hospitalization.

It will also speak to having to admit to eventually having herd immunity. The problem is we don't know right now how long that immunity lasts. It might just be for months, or it might be a longer duration. Just like the vaccine , when it finally comes out, we will have zero idea if it lasts. Oh, we might now it is protective for six or 12 months, however long the challenge study runs, but beyond that, once the vaccine is released, it will be years before we know the actual protective titer strength and how long it lasts.

Yup. Had to take an Uber to the store yesterday. These drivers are expected to do all the mask and glove stuff. My guy had the most desultory approach I've yet seen. 227 I know everyone here wants to scream constantly that this virus is no big deal, but it IS incredibly contagious. 98% of the people who catch it have no to mild symptoms. It's the 2% of people who develop serious symptoms that need to worry.

You left out one number which counters the "incredibly contagious" line. It is true that 98% of the people who catch will develop no to mild symptoms, BUT 80% of the General Population, those in good health, not elderly, not in any risk group - will NOT catch it even when exposed. (based on numbers from the Diamond Princess, the TR Roosevelt, and studies coming in)

The actual chances of becoming seriously ill from this, even when exposed, is for the general population at most 3 or 4 out of every 1,000 persons. Those in specific risk groups will have higher chances, of course.

This is a profoundly un-serious position. He can not possible mean what he says, because this logic take to it's logical conclusion has all of us starving in the dark in about two weeks. Every thing that makes life possible involves some level of risk.

If I turn on a light switch, there is a chance some electrical worker died maintaining the lines to my house. If I eat a tomato, there is a chance that some farmer could have died producing that food. The "just one life" standard means no food, no fuel, no electricity, no anything. We would all die to make sure we didn't lose just one life.

Anybody who would say something that stupid is either really stupid or really dishonest. Maybe both. He certainly does not have the ability to make the decisions necessary to do the job, even in the best of times. Certainly not in these times.

< Absolutely obliquely side-tracking from the topic... >

I say once more, I've got decades of anecdotal testimony to the effectiveness of properly-implemented homeopathy, including the Arnica I took for my creaky body a couple of times lately.

Funny thing, in strict, classical homeopathy so much study goes into finding just the one right remedy at just the right dosage, for each unique case -- and then the final prescription is always... useless sugar pills!

Between "placebo effect" and "just got better anyway," one can never really say the remedy -worked.- Seemed to cure my horrible poison ivy reactions. Or maybe I just grew inoculated from heavy vine-pulling.

At least, the little sugar pills beat the expense *and* the risks of just about any pharmaceutical. Or this antibiotic I'm on right now.

(Yeaaahh, we've experimented with "try homeopathy first," and been surprised by the seeming efficaciousness, but I'm not going to try to fight an infection with homeopathy - even our all-out strictly-classical homeopathic MD back in Chicago fell back on antibiotics when called for. Once.)

Once.)

366 I posted generic "information" from the CDC website, not results of a particular study. Anyone who actually wants 5-G

Go look at the effective range of those towers.

Its in the hundreds of yards range, and almost anything will block the signal.

Higher the Freq, the more line of sight you need between antennas.

You know the irritating thing that happens when you are on a call moving around and it sometimes cuts out? That will be endemic with 5G.

Only way around that is multiple Antennas covering each area, which drives up cost.

Now, 5G antennas ARE small. Cold easily be place on Lamposts or existing Telephone poles vice a separate tower.

But they will be a whole butt load of them for effective coverage (and all have to have a fiber drop as well).

409 A word of caution: the credibility of those in authority is one of the things they are responsible to maintain. If people lack trust in institutions, some portion of the blame must fall on those institutions for undermining their own credibility. Cell towers causing health problems, anti-vaccination beliefs, and even the flat-earthers are symptoms of growing disenchantment with various authorities. It is not an issue of smart or dumb (remember that many self-identified 'smart' people are socialists) but rather "how many untruths can we hear before we do not believe anything they say?"
Of course they are wrong about cell towers, but ponder why they think that.

434 And it turns out that completely avoiding the Sun is equally harmful. (I'm not saying we need some moderate level of RF, but most things at moderate levels are fine).

I agree. But what's moderate? And is holding that phone so close all day messing with it actually moderate? There's a lot here we don't know, and just dismissing concerns entirely because some people are kooks about it is foolish.

Vaccines are in the same boat: saying we should ban vaccines or that they are all horrible autism machines is idiotic and insane. But at the same time, forcing every kid to get 87 shots to go to school is just as crazy.

I'll be the test case for "most of the damage is done by age 18". When I was young I lived in Phoenix and got burned ridiculously all the time. (i remember one where my skin felt like butcher paper for 3 days) But, after my 20's I have decided not to let that happen and have been careful to cover up and protect my skin from that. We'll see if I ever develop anything.

Of course, with care they can be dealt with. My mother still lives in the Phoenx-Scottsdale area and is in her 80's, it seems every year for the last few years she's had to go in and have one or two dark skin spots removed, everyone old with light skin there does. but it's outpatient surgery, in and out in a couple hours, not very complicated.

463 A word of caution: the credibility of those in authority is one of the things they are responsible to maintain.

Perhaps because the "scientists" have replaced science - which is a system for discovery and testing - with faith and shouting. Why trust a "scientist" over the haggard guy on the street corner shouting about the end of the world because of our sins? They are essentially the same person at this point (depending on field, some fields like climatology are entirely corrupt. Others are less so, but are also less loud and overwhelmed).
Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at May 07, 2020 12:14 PM (hYcqw)

I keep going back to Bret Weinstein's story about the "broken mice" used for drug testing. He discovered a problem with the mice that are basically all supplied by one company, and how their traits are NOT found in field mice.

Thus, when it came to tumors caused by certain meds, with the question cell death vs regrowth being CRUCIAL to whether a medication was safe for humans or not... was being distorted by the mice they were using.

And when he tried to have this information published, he was basically drummed out of his field, had his data stolen by some High Priests in their towers, and eventually, when they were able to benefit from it (including Nobel prizes), they published the study.

Years (or maybe months, I can't remember) later.

After drug after drug after drug was subjected to the same errors in testing and approval.

And this sort of High Priest approach happens all over "science," with the people in control not letting the data take it where it will go, but keeping things from the world of knowledge if it doesn't fit their desired narrative.

So yeah, that's a religion/cult, not science.

I think it's twofold. There's a national emergency and there are also 50 states of emergency (which I think has never happened before). I am not sure if Trump can rescind the state approvals without rescinding the national or not.

But I would like him to come out and rescind the state-level emergencies for every state that has turned the corner - which is most of them. A lot of these emergency powers vanish with the state of emergency.

508 The bashing of HCQ from some scientists might be because of money, but the only thing that explains the bashing from the media is that Trump mentioned it. We now have tens of thousands of people effectively treated with it and at a minimum has caused no harm. There is zero reason not to try it on any positive patient.

In addition, there was an actual scientific study in 2005 that showed its effectiveness against corona viruses. So waiting for another study seems superfluous.

Posted by: ... at May 07, 2020 11:30 AM (uEbPt)

The best way to attack it is to nullify its pretense of moral high ground.

Staying in lockdown is not a neutral act without negative consequences. Unemployment and poverty also have associated mortality, through suicide, overdose, and violent crime.

If the mortality from the virus is equal to or less than the mortality from the increased unemployment, then we have a moral responsibility to stop curtailing liberty, as it no longer does any good.

If the goal is to save lives, which it reasonably is, we have a duty not to cause greater harm in the effort to help.

That could be the whole story, but I'm wondering if there's something more. Because, if it's just about greedy pigs trying to get theirs, it seems too transparent right now.

How do they get away with it?

It's like the difference between a cat burglar, who sneaks in at the dead of night, takes his booty, and gets out before anyone knows he was there. As opposed to thugs going into a jewelry store, smashing the glass, and running out with whatever they can get their hands on.

This seems too much like the latter than the former, and that's why I'm wondering if there's more going on that we're not privy to.

523 "The energy required to cause mutations (breaking bonds in genetic material) is fairly well known by chemists"
I had a similar discussion with a guy in a NY bar back in the mid 90s regarding high voltage transmission lines and cancer. I told him there wasn't enough energy to break chemical bonds in DNA to cause mutations. There COULD be other mechanisms (perhaps related to inter- or intra-cell transport mechanisms), but most likely cancer spikes were related to something else (e.g. cancinogenic chemicals, radon gas, etc) or the vagaries of statistics (can always find a correlation to something no matter how weak the correlation).
