According to these data, we have performed almost 7,000,000 tests, far more than any other country. And when one considers that we have a far less dense population compared to other hard-hit countries (I am ignoring the data from Russia because I don't believe anything they say), and vast reaches of America that have very little Kung Flu, it is even more impressive. Those tests, especially the ones done in NYC indicate a very high level of previous infection...on the order of 20%+. Even assuming that the numbers in NYC are significantly more than the rest of the country (let us assume 5x more), the death rate drops to 0.5%, which sounds suspiciously like a bad flu season. You know, like the really bad one in 1968 that killed 100,000 Americans (or 165,000 if corrected for our current population). Does anyone remember 1968? Did we shut down the country? Hitler and Stalin and Mao didn't start with mass killings.
---Point of order: This is not correct. Stalin and Mao went all-in on the killing right from the start. As their power grew, they were able to increase the scale, but the killing was always right there, in your face. Hitler got a slower start, but within three months of taking power he had overthrown the parliamentary order and was able to arrest his enemies with impunity. Those in power broke have broken the Social Contract known as the American system, in the last few years.
They are blatant about no equal Justice (exhibit 1 Hillary, or Flynn), and have constantly sided with non Americans and Deviants against normal Citizens. Now, the Federal Government is allowing MAYORS to take away your Civil Rights, and ignore the Constitution, with impunity. The Constitution was a Contract between the People, the States, and the Federal Government, as to what permissible, and what was not. Stalin and Mao went all-in on the killing right from the start. As their power grew, they were able to increase the scale, but the killing was always right there, in your face.
The Georgian Gimp had been quietly but inexorably stacking the deck in his favor while Lenin was still lucid but was nervous about him. Then once the original dictator of the proletariat was incapacitated by a series of strokes Stalin had no reason to hide his ambition. One thing Lenin couldn't figure out was how to make the peasants in the sticks knuckle under. Yes they systematically starved a few but when they sent apparatchiks to boss them around they killed thousands of them. Stalin was determined to correct that. gangbanger shooting each other - not newsworthy. Posted by: runner at May 03, 2020 12:32 PM (zr5Kq) Nobody panics when the expected people gets killed. Again - *what* are we doing, with "phases"? How does any of it align with normal or rational epidemiological strategery, if the fatality rate is not apocalyptic (it clearly isn't), it's already widespread (it clearly is), and there is no prospect of a vaccine very soon to accelerate "herd" immunity (there isn't)?
Contact tracing, general testing as opposed to targeted, % of positive cases - none of these are relevant to this stage of an epidemic, and make no sense as any criteria for restoring normal activity. One beautiful point that clarifies: if there is any concern with medical capacity being overwhelmed, at this point - why has all the expedient surge medical capacity been dismantled? What are we doing, and exactly why? Amazing. Even the least-worst scientists speaking up, and public figures, fail to confront the obvious contradictions here. Ionnidis (sp?), the Stanford scientist, in discussing the Santa Clara antigen survey, stands by its central findings - but then burbles some generic endorsement of continued cautionary measures. This isn't academic, or minor. Real economic and social damage occurs every day of this. Posted by: rhomboid at May 03, 2020 12:44 PM (El6T/) 93
The concept of "essential" as opposed to "inessential" was the same basis for the Nazi genocides applied in nakedly human terms. I think "Animal Farm" touched on it too. As does the Bible. And Mao. And Stalin. And Pol Pot.

They killed people within the power structure or
those whose deaths wouldn't be noticed. The large-scale stuff came later when Russia and China were inured to it. Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at May 03, 2020 12:37 PM (dLLD6) --- *Furrows brow* Russia had a nasty civil war, followed by purges, followed by more purges. Then Stalin got the helm, and pretty much began regular purges. Then he fought Nazis, and purged some more. There was no honeymoon that I can think of. Mao likewise consolidated power by killing the hell out of anyone he thought a threat. Though not a particularly good movie, "Love is a Many Splendoured Thing" captures the sense of panic among the Chinese fleeing for their lives from the triumphant ChiComs in 1949. No honeymoon there, either. If the Pacific Fleet hadn't stopped Mao's goons at the Taiwan Straight, he'd have wiped out Chiang's entire army, their family, their friends, their friends' family, their families' friends' etc. As I said, Hitler is a better example, but his earliest targets weren't NSDAP dissidents but the Reds. He went after Roehm only after he'd beaten the left into submission. When the left takes power in a more settled civil society, they move slower, but only because they are constrained by that society. Without those constraints, it's pretty much instant purges. Probably the best example for what you want to say is Republican Spain, which did pay lip service to pluralism, democracy and so on. The left wrote the constitution, but never actually wanted to follow it. Thus: civil war. Posted by: Ace-Endorsed Author A.H. Lloyd at May 03, 2020 12:47 PM (cfSRQ) 100

We're past that. Well past. The "phase" framework doesn't really make much sense, even before considering that radical mitigation may well have limited effect anyway. I was at the time, a Mid Level Petty Officer on an LPH, in charge of all the Communications for the ship, but was also the resident smart ass technician who everyone went to when no once else could seem to fix something. I later asked the Colonel why the hell I was in that meeting, and he told me something that sticks with me to this day. He said, 'you are here for an electronics answer. If I asked a Marine, they would say assault it. The Marine answer. If I asked a Navy Officer, he would say stand offshore and do shore fire (we had a Battleship with this group, yeah, I'm old), if I asked a pilot he'd say bomb it.' I got what he meant, when you ask someone for a solution to a problem, they will ONLY give you a solution that is within their area of Expertise. So, when Trump asked Doctors what to do about this? He got a draconian Medical answer that would keep more people MEDICALLY safe. Not an economic answer. Not a psychologists answer. An answer with a VERY limited view of the total problem. Before it was fairly clear that this bug did not have an apocalyptic fatality rate (=1+%), by modern standards, hard to second guess radical action (however limited the actual impact of mitigation was - it had also never been done, so was a first run).
Recall - the specific and exclusive objective of the mitigation ("slow the spread") was to prevent overwhelming (the augmented) medical capacity. Not to eliminate the virus. Not to reduce eventual total death count. Not to attempt some magical transformation in which a viral respiratory epidemic does anything other than *spread until it is slowed/stopped by immunity*. At the time and still in retrospect a reasonable approach. But the "phased" exit path does not correspond to any normal epidemic-control principles I can see, ignores what we've learned about fatality rates and *the very concentrated fatality risk in a narrow demographic*. Worst of all - though academic because it won't happen - if any of the phased measures resulted in slowing the spread, that could be a *very bad thing*, as it would push more C-19 caseload into the flu season. QuietMan, again, death data are subject to lags, only a few states are providing date-of-death data, as opposed to just numbers, which get dumped into the system in line with varying mechanics by state (death certificate process, etc). So IL's #s probably continue to be reported that way, and any apparent timing is a coincidence.

Everybody keeps assuming there will be a vaccine. My reading has indicated that this is problematic. Creation will be difficult and will not guarantee success. If it is eventually constructed, it will not be a chicken pox type that provides excellent defense but will mimic the effect of the flu vaccine. Symptoms may not be as bad for most people but it will still cause major issues for people in current risk groups.

Posted by: TheQuietMan at May 03, 2020 01:47 PM (cytyg) Which is going to make future legal cases interesting. From my reading, the Supremes HAVE said its OK to take someone's rights away and Quarantine them, IF they are sick, or if you KNOW they have been exposed to the sickness. This however, takes EVERYONE's rights away, even if they have never been exposed. I do find it amusing that somehow an Illegal can get an Executive order Halted before its even in effect, while somehow all of this stuff with MAYORs taking your rights, doesn't seem to be in the Courts much yet (a few cases, but not that many). 121 Kansas City said you must register with them to go to church. My registration would be the middle finger.
Posted by: Guy Mohawk at May 03, 2020 12:55 PM (r+sAi) Does anybody have a link for that? I do not see that online at any sort of reputable-seeming site. I even slogged through the dreadful Kansas City Star. Posted by: m at May 03, 2020 02:19 PM (aK8Pt) 376

There is a very confusing report of the Kansas City church restrictions here--confusing enough to be virtually worthless:

In many parts of the country the weather is now good enough for people to be outside a lot (if only in their yards, gardens, neighborhood parks and on decks.) This means less time spent in front of and being indoctrinated by cable TV. That will improve the overall picture I think and help clear the air for more rational thought by even the worst of the Karens.

There is no reinfection rate. South Korea had some patients test positive after they had tested negative. So they did more testing. The original tests picked up the RNA from the virus but it couldn't be cultured in the lab. It's dead. There is no reinfection.

Here's the other curious thing. African Swine Flu caused the Chinese to kill over 2 million pigs last year. Suddenly, this year, we have Chinese owned pork producers claiming there will be shortages due to Wuflu in the plants here. I sometimes wonder if they aren't just shipping the pork to China

Title 18 U.S.C. Section 242

Good luck with that. Posted by: Skip at May 03, 2020 01:04 PM (ZCEU2) Washington state, too. July 6. It's a suicide pact. Stay tuned to exactly who. The worst job in the world will be a cop in WA or OR on July 4. Good luck with that. Brown and Insless, they hate Trump. And bringing down their states to a Depression is fine by them, if it hurts Trump. Neither refuses to have a conversation or justification, only dictating like a King. It is really disgusting to watch. Last Friday, I saw a Repub person on TV saying he was "authorized" to file a lawsuit. Whatever the hell that means. This shows you how badly the OneParty has taken over in the Left Coast states. Because there are hundreds of thousands, if not more, non-citizens that have easily registered because of Motor Voter laws. Voting is a sick joke in WA state, specifically. The ballot box is infested with corruption. This is the result. Posted by: LeftCoast Dawg at May 03, 2020 03:13 PM (sy5kK) 385

Confession is good for the soul...
I've been pussy-hurt over Trump's not taking a decisive position on this idiot lockdown, and I worried that he was kinda...relaxing his butthole and just letting 'em in. But I am starting to think that he knows or believes that the American People are smart enough see who their oppressors really are, and, per Mencken's dictum that "The common man knows what he wants and deserves to get it, good and hard" he is teaching the People a lesson by letting the guy on the opposite side of the poker table show his hand. I graduated high school in 1967. I remember 1968 quite well. There was a flu season that year???
Posted by: Rick9911 at May 03, 2020 05:04 PM (kYa/C) 389
The flu came at the end of 1968, did most of its killing in 1969. You said the 100,000 Americans it killed would be like 165,000 today. No, it's many more. You are simply comparing a population of 200 million (then) with 350 million (now). Let's look more closely. In 1969 the life expectancy was 70, and the average baby boomer was a teenager. It was a young country. Killing 100,000 people in a young population is radically more virulent than killing 100,000 in an old population. Today, the boomers are nearing the end of life, and as a nation, we are a much older people. A virus of equivalent lethality, in our older 350 million, would take maybe 250,000 lives. That's what we faced in 1969. And nothing shut down. Kids went to Woodstock. Hollywood today has a love affair with that period in our history, and according to them, that time in America is all about rock-and-roll, drugs, sex, Watergate, Apollo, and Vietnam. Nowhere in our public consciousness is the Hong Kong flu. It came, we dealt with it, it hurt many families, we survived. In fact, the Hong Kong flu still exists today. No doubt you have antibodies to it. The survivors have immunity. We live with it. This covid madness is not about biology, but tyranny. True, covid19 is a bad virus, but the much worse virus is the media in collusion with globalists and tyrants.

I was a teenager in 1968 and Dad was in Vietnam while I caught the Hong Kong Flu.
It was bad. I sweated the sheets dripping wet and measured 104°. Mom kept aspirin and fluids coming and the fever broke. I was fine after that. I really should have become a virologist. I hate the things. Posted by: torabora at May 03, 2020 09:24 PM (rReTs) Processing 0.03, elapsed 0.0503 seconds. |
