70 These look like the two wing panels off a diptych altarpiece. Adam and Eve were popular subjects for the closed-sides of these types of altarpieces. The inside would then commonly be some image of Jesus, the Crucifixion, Resurrection, Christ in Majesty... something like that. When closed the worshipper was reminded of his sin and when opened, reminded of his salvation.

Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 04, 2020 10:07 AM (gd9RK)

They didn't. While M. was painting the works, there were always critics that called the nudes next to pornography (one was depicted as Minos in Hell in "The Last Judgement"), but the popes liked the paintings so no one could do anything about it. As the Reformation gained speed and criticism of the RCC grew stronger, the Counter-Reformation and Inquisition started to listen to the nude-critics and the later popes started to agree. M. held off "fixing" his works but was finally ordered to by the reigning pope but died before acquiescing. The Church hired lesser artists to "fix" M.'s nudes to make them acceptable.

I'm kind of fascinated by nudes and our approach to them. I was talking to the Dildo about doing Wyeth's Black Velvet and maybe comparing it to Manet's Olympia Reclining. He said he didn't know how ace feels about nudes.

Now I'm taking this conversation into clear channel.

Obviously we have nudes here. We have nudes today, we had some Michelangelo. Is the problem with the Wyeth nude that it's better? It looks more nude than this because it's well done.

It's something I've never understood since I was a little kid. Why is a drawing of a nude art but a photo of a nude is porn? How does drawing it better take it from art to porn.

And, as an aside, real artists also draw porn. I have books of drawing by Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele that are absolutely porn.

Wrath of Khan and Undiscovered Country are arguably complementary. The former is about confronting the sins of your past, and how they can drag down our children and poison our future. The latter is about finally moving beyond our past and looking towards the future. The former is the last of the old-school wild west days of the Federation, a universe full of dangers an intrigue and possibilities. The latter represents a change away from that, to a time where the galaxy is becoming, at least ostensibly, more peaceful and settled.

Fun Fact 3: The President of the Federation is played by Kurtwood Smith, the dad in That 70s Show.

Fun Fact 4: Kim Cattrall posed for some semi-nude shots in her Vulcan makeup on the bridge of the Enterprise, but they were confiscated and destroyed by either Roddenberry or Nimoy, depending on which story you believe.

And you have to watch the movie on DVD. Not that is makes the ending any better, but you see that the "Klingon" trying to assassinate the president is actually Star Fleet Colonel West (played by Rene Auberjonois of DS9 fame).

I'm trying to remember a joke. Little Dirty Johnny is in church, and his mother is concerned that he's not paying attention and so asks the preacher what to do. He decides to ask Johnny some questions to determine the state of his biblical knowledge.

I forget the first two questions, but each time, Johnny starts to answer with some smart ass remark, and his mother sticks him with a pin.

Then the preacher asks, "Now what did Eve say to Adam when...". Johnny blurts out, "Don't you stick me with that thing again!"

300 It's something I've never understood since I was a little kid. Why is a drawing of a nude art but a photo of a nude is porn? How does drawing it better take it from art to porn.

Because a photo is objectifying a real person, ie reducing them to their physical attributes for another's sexual pleasure, also a one faceted piece of the human person.

An art drawing, instead of the human body can be an appreciation or depiction of a Creator given form and represent not only the physical but potentially more of the human person.

It's the difference between objectifying and symbolizing.

Plenty of photos of nudes are art. I think the difference lies in the intent behind the photo/drawing/etc. Whether to trigger a base psychological reaction such as lust, or to trigger a reaction based more on the aesthetics of the piece.

My brother in law had a bunch of art nudes, paintings, not photographs.

I hate Leda and her fat ass plus swan in the dining room. I doubt he was appreciating Leda's fat ass as symbolic and I'm grossed out by women's nudes. A nice male greek god type figure? That would be nice. That's how I know there's still a sexual component. I'm grossed by the women and not by the men, which is a sexual response at some level....not erotic but still preferential. The venus de Milo? That doesn't creep me out.

So nude art? Is it about form or is it erotic? Once erotic, then it's objectifying.

I use a definition of art as "the sharing of perception via a specific medium." Pornography, IMHO, is a very low form of art, which only seeks to inflame base emotions. High art seeks to do more. For example, a picture of a woman, naked, spread-eagled, would be pornography. Not necessarily aesthetically pleasing, no real context, just there to get your lizard brain to act in a certain way. Contrawise, the same naked woman, lying on a bed in the morning light, legs crossed for a bit of modesty, might trigger a greater range of emotions and memories. The viewer doesn't just think about sex, they associate sex with other sensations. Perhaps she's woken after a night of passion to find her lover gone. Perhaps the viewer is that lover, returning to the bed. The viewer can imagine the room, the warmth of the sheets, the smell, the sound of birds outside, etc. The viewer can appreciate the aesthetics: the way the light plays on the scene, the long curve of a hip, etc.

IMHO pornography is art, but is an inferior form of art. And I don't just see pornography as sexual. graphic slasher flicks, propoganda, etc. All are forms of pornography, according to my definition.

276 They didn't. While M. was painting the works, there were always critics that called the nudes next to pornography

Posted by: Bandersnatch at May 04, 2020 10:35 AM (gd9RK)

Henry Fusili had some naughty art too.

The line between the artistic nude and nakedness is very blurry, and really depends on the viewer. As a guideline tho, if the figure is idealized and of a more-than-human stature (god or goddess or hero, for example) , then it's OK. If the figure is not idealized, or if the subject is blatantly sex, like Manet's "Olympia" which is of a prostitute, no question, then it's porn... until it isn't. Titian's "Venus of Urbino" was a boudoir picture commissioned by the Duke of Urbino to celebrate his recent marriage. It shows a new bride ready for her wedding night. The title "Venus of Urbino" was supposed to raise it to the level of art so it's nude would be uncriticizable.

There are two versions of Goya's "Maja" because the first was seen as porn so he made another fully clothed. It's all in the eye of the beholder AND in the value systems of the taste-deciders.

369 Contrawise, the same naked woman, lying on a bed in the morning light, legs crossed for a bit of modesty, might trigger a greater range of emotions and memories.

Compare and contrast Goya's Clothed Maja and Naked Maja.

The Paul Brown coaching tree was huge: Shula, Woody Hayes, Bo Schembechler, Lou Holtz, Bill Walsh (whom he drove away from the Bengals), Weeb Ewbank, Blanton Collier and others I can't think of. Sports Illustrated once had a photo of a reunion (PB typically didn't show up) and it was very large.

481 This question of art vs. pron is really not about the work itself. It's not even about the individual's subjective standard.

It's really about a society's stance on how these things get decided. We could have a 50% plus 1 standard... i.e. the democratic standard, if a simple majority think something is pron or art. Then based on that result, it's either allowed in the public square or it's not.

Or there's a standard of overwhelming consensus, so some piece of work would really have to be out there to be accepted or banned, depending on which side of that equation you want to deem more important... i.e. liberty vs. safety.

Or we could start with the assumption that if just one person defines it as pron, then society must act to protect the MOST offended among us, which is just a more extreme version of liberty vs. safety.

Finally, you could have a society that decides it's not society's right to decide, and just leaves people to decide for themselves, which is the extreme liberty ideal.

The real question then, and this becomes uncomfortable... if society can decide this stuff at all, and if democracy is about deciding where the line is, is democracy REALLY compatible with liberty?

506 Almost certainly the Welsh were the remnants of the oldest populations, including the pre-celtic peoples. They would have included some of those called the "picts" by the Romans, and who they distinguished from the other, more Celtic, Britons. The picts remained a distinct group until almost the 10th century, when the last of them finally blended in with the Scots.

That alone suggests that they were rather ill tempered.

Democracy has never been fully compatible with liberty. This was known since the ancient Greeks. Hence the reason that the founding fathers didn't make us a pure democracy, but instead focused on representative governance with an emphasis on decisions at the lowest levels.

This too, is a question of liberty vs. safety.

Adam, the ignorant but happy, could have remained subject to God's oversight on all matters... or he could pursue knowledge, and thus decision making capacity.

Eden was the perfect dictatorship, with the most perfect benevolent dictator.

But as soon as God appoints someone else to take over the management and care of his docile creatures, the benevolence gives way. We've been having that fight ever since.
