The Morning Rant

talking ape 02 social distance.jpg
In 2020, being a progressive woman means...

--realizing that jumping up and down and yelling "FCUK TRUMP!" while wearing a pink pussy hat didn't really accomplish much of anything.

--having to sit still while all of the loudest proponents of #MeToo are falling all over themselves to endorse 'Stinkyfingers' Biden for president.

--reaping the bitter harvest of your party defending serial rapist Bill Clinton to its dying breath.

--you're expected to let powerful men grope you and grab your hoohah and then you have to shut up because women's rights.

--the ya ya sisterhood will refuse to protect you against male feminists.

--you've got to believe that getting pawed by creeps is not as bad as Donald Trump picking judges.

--finding out the slogan 'Believe All Women' may not apply to you was an "over-correction".

--Ditto with 'All Women should be heard'. You may be an exception.

--knowing that how it works is that first you get raped, then you get smeared

--when push comes to shove, your closest friends will turn on you.

--learning the hard way that predatory creeps aren't all Republicans.

And on a completely different note, has anyone noticed that all of the governors and mayors (Whitmer, Newsom, Cuomo, de Blasio, Pritzker, Sisolak) who have let their inner Stalin run free during the coronavirus crisis have all been Democrats?

Wednesday's celebs: There was interesting split opinion among the morons over Alexandra Daddario due to her two very prominent and mesmerizing... eyes. They're right up on the line between 'smoldering' and 'creepy' and some chose the first while some chose the latter. I must say I did find (and reject) a number of photos where here eyes looked to be set so far back in their sockets that she did look like some sort of undead creature. And speaking of undead creatures, the guy pic is Alexandra's brother Matthew, whom I thought looks like an angsty vampire in those angsty vampire movies that teenaged girls seem to love so much and are all a-quiver over. But he's not. Other than being a regular in that Shadowhunters TV show, that's as close as he's ever gotten to the angsty vampire genre.

Alright, so it's been a harrowing couple weeks, but Vanessa's emergency shunt replacement is finished, and appears to have been a success. She is sleeping peacefully behind me. The neurosurgeons just did their next-day followup and are happy with their work.

Downside is, the infectious disease doctor put the kibosh on their plans to have her out of here tomorrow, because they want to be 110% sure the infection that was responsible for the failure of the original shunt doesn't return. Depending on the regimen they settle on, it could be as late as next Wednesday .

Silver lining: She's going to be too big for the Cadillac bassinet soon, so I got her a pimp-ass new yuuuge, luxurious crib the other day before the procedure for when she returns, and that'll give me time to rig it out with heat and a new bluetooth speaker for her music, and make it extra comfy... I was looking at the number of cases in CT where we used to live. 1/10th the population of Texas but they have the same number of cases we have and they have three times the number of deaths we have.

We have denser urban areas than CT does so that's not what is making their numbers go up higher than us. Granted they have a lot of people who live in CT and work in NYC so that may account for some of the disparity, but not three times the death rate with one tenth the population of Texas.

but honestly a lot of it is infection traveling from NYC

I found an article yesterday that shocked me - NYC was sending out cases - of infected elderly patients - they were sending them out of hospitals in NYC to nursing homes which we knew? but to homes in OTHER STATES

to NJ, to CT, to MA

probably to PA too, we have a lot of those types of facilities here

there's a VA hospital I didn't even know about in Spring City with a bunch of NYC COVID patients that were transferred in. that's going to hit MontCo numbers (which it shouldn't, but it will). probably these people will be double counted

Posted by: OregonMuse, AoSHQ Thought Leader, Pants Monitor & Social Distancing Professional at May 01, 2020 11:32 AM (NWFZA)

Grammie , it depends on what the legislative history is. Right now in Michigan, there are three different emergency powers bills that were passed over the past 75 years and no one knows for certain if the last one passed in the 70s takes precedence. Typical stupid legislators don't bother repealing old statutes when they pass new ones. So now if this goes to court, a court is going to have to decide which emergency powers act is enforceable.

Whitmer has closed the entire fricking state again for another 28 days. All restaurants, barber shops, bars, small businesses, etc. I don't know if construction crews can work on private projects. It's insane, 85% of the deaths and cases are in Detroit, yet everyone in the entire state is ordered to stay home. Businesses won't open because they don't know if the legislature is right or Whitmer will be upheld and their business will be fined and license pulled.

Well, the people commenting online at the Detroit News, which is the conservative paper, are appalled by people protesting, and essentially hope anyone breaking lockdown dies of CV19.

And yes, I've heard the former from people in know in MI as well. Many seem to support her, since CV19 is worse than death.
Posted by: shibumi, living in a police state at May 01, 2020 11:39 AM (ZCiJZ)

Shibumi, who actually takes the time to post in the Detroit News, LOL. I take all those types of columns and responses with a grain of salt. Most of them are liberal jackasses, old time Democrats who would follow a Democrat gov off a cliff.

This morning an acquaintance of mine stated on Facebook that the reason Pence didn't wear a mask at Mayo was because he and Trump have received the Covid 19 vaccine and are invested in the company that is going to produce the vaccine, making millions.

There's no reasoning with people like that. They are religious zealots in their beliefs , which they adopt with no actual thinking.

My personal estimation is that women, outside of those who are part of the horde, of course, are far more heavily influenced by "social opinion", and are raised to be terrified of truly "independent" thought. They have spent their entire lives believing that of course, one has to think what all of your neighbors and the dominant members of your peer group thinks.

In defense of this view, men tend to be complete assholes far more than women do. Part of being a complete asshole is not giving a fuck what anyone around you thinks.

312 272 There was an episode of Stargate SG-1 where Black's character is pitching movie ideas to a movie producer (I'm not going to explain the backstory here). She tries variations of plots of several well-known movies, and of course gets shot down. She then tries Farscape, to which the producer replies something along the lines of "Now that one I've not heard before"

This is the famous"200th Episode", which is one of the funniest episodes out of any sci-fi series I've even seen! This one rivals "Red Dwarf" in it's hilarity. The best scene is when they decide to to Puppet Action Stargate, and then they walk through the gate, and all the strings are cut...

I think that plays heavily into it as well as the emotional side. And endless netflix and TV shows about women disappearing and being murdered horribly.

I almost wonder if Firefly was being made today, would it be on Netflix or Amazon, and have a chance to thrive?

I suspect Joss Weedon is enough of an egomaniac he would think it beneath him to not be on network teevee though. Even though more than one of his shows flamed out for not being enough of a hit early enough.

Dollhouse is, in my opinion, possibly the most interesting thing he ever created. I'm not sure it was better than anything else, but it was going places that were fascinating. Then when it came to an end, I assume they tacked on an ending that was sorta ok.

414 All of the experts except the guy who runs Tyson Chicken (and what the hell would he know anyway) say there is no concern of the food supply chain breaking. Well I call BULLSHIT on that.

Went to the store where I could not get in due to royal decree from our mayor without a mask. Chicken 6-8 packages. Bacon none. Some hot dogs. Steaks and red meat very little. About a 40% stocked cheese aisle.

NO dried pasta, no bulk rice, no bulk beans. Still no toilet paper or paper towels.

The frozen area was about 20% stocked. The dairy aisle had 20% milk, lots of non dairy creamer, 15% of the normal amount of butter.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, THERE ARE MAJOR DISRUPTIONS IN THE FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN. My gut tells me so and it has a near perfect record.

The demo-commies are going for the brass ring now. The truly frightening thing is the people. They do not see that this is what the demo-commies want, a socialist America with grocery stores 40% of what they were.

Tyrants always use food as a weapon. Because in the end food is what really matters.

439 So, to some degree, WI is paying the price for canning Walker?? Sounds idiotic.

But as I noted way up, the WH is part of this whether they like it or not. Giving states/governors discretion while continuing to lead on general policy is an option. That's what happened on the way in to this.

What's the "science" - in this case, even a reasonable educated guess and prudent strategy based on what we know about viral epidemics in general, and, now, this one in particular, that lies behind the "phased" re-opening? It does not add up.

"Slowing the spread" related to medical capacity. That's past - and fortunately was a nothingburger compared to even mid-range projections.

Actually taking into account actual science and common sense about viral epidemics, *what*, exactly are we doing now? The metrics of the "phased" approach don't appear to relate to any rational goal - slowing the spread of a virus that will not overwhelm medical capacity makes no sense.

Not sure she had much choice in the matter.

Yeah, Walmart, strangely, seems less well stocked than WinCo for some things we buy, but all in all, there's currently no shortage of meats. And I remember back to week 2 when the panic crowd cleaned out ALL the fresh meat coolers at WinCo, but were too stupid to wander over to the frozen food section where there was still plenty of chicken, beef and so forth.

508 Nice to see all the Farscape recognition here. Not too shabby for a 20-year-old space opera with puppets.

To give credit where it's due, The Creature Shop did some fantastic work there... but also some not-so-fantastic. I have a special fondness for Sparky, aka Rygel.

Word is, new episodes are being shopped, and Amazon is interested. The response when Farscape went up on Prime recently was several multipliers more than what they anticipated, and the producers (O'Bannon and Manning) have been talking to them. The original cast is all in, with the sad exception of Jonathan Hardy, who voiced Rygel, who died several years ago.

We shall see!
